Space Cop went from an old fake trailer to a real film. Fans have been looking forward to it. So yes, there is a demand. The fact that they've sold out means it's already profitable.

I'm not saying the film didn't take time or effort, but I think based on what we've seen, it's no different to something like Scary Movie. They're talking a corny genre that's fun because the films are corny, and making a corny-on-purpose parody. Which defeats the point of why people (including themselves) like these films.

Samurai Cop had effort put into it too, it's funny because of the bad acting and dubbing. These weren't done for comedic effect. Mike's over-the-top acting is corny for comic effect. It's not the same.

I liked Feeding Frenzy for the James Gunn vibe it gave me, but from what I can tell, this is going to be the same nonsense that Kung Fury was. I'd rather watch a bad sci-fi B-movie than a parody of a bad sci-fi B-movie. It's a genre that doesn't need to be parodied, because they're already funny, and to parody them completely misses the point.

Well I'll put it another way:

They're parodying 80s science fiction films by making a facsimile of an 80s sci-fi B-movie.

And again, being a parody isn't an excuse. Nor is the fact that they put effort into it. Sticking with the Scary Movie example, they parodied slasher films (corny and fun) but hammed everything up and captured none of the entertainment that made slasher films enjoyable.

There are good parodies, but they're good because they're still well-made, have strong jokes, and usually have characters acting serious in silly situations (think Airplane!). This has silly characters acting silly because they're in a silly spoof. If Mike was playing the hardboiled detective character completely straight instead of acting like an over-the-top 1930s caricature, I think it would be a lot funnier.

But again, this is all speculation based on trailers and clips. Maybe the film is fantastic, this is just my opinion from what I've seen. I shouldn't have to say this, but there are too many people in these threads who keep automatically dismissing any criticism as a meme ("oh it's that 'ironically bad' guy again") or BECAUSE it's a parody. There are bad parodies and this looks like one of them.
