>>64719806 Completely agree. That scene alone is better than all of TFA.
ROTS is painted in broad brush strokes. It is played out a mammoth stage by actors with megaphones. It is big and bold. It is outrageously epic geographically and emotionally. The symbolism is grand too and because it is in keeping with the story's sweep it does not unbalance the story.
On the scene, at the Opera House, the Mon Calamari put on a show where sperm-like ribbons float in and out of a massive watery egg. The discussion between Sheev and Anakin about the creation of life cements the visual message.
>"Ironic isn't it? ...He could save others but not himself" - Sheev >"He saved others, let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One" - Priest Luke 23:35
George Lucas uses the language of Christian heritage, words already resonant with meaning, as stepping stones to a greater understanding. In this way he subtly illuminates for us the roles, the motivations and the size of what is at stake.
JJ Abrams would NEVER be able to pull off a scene as poignant and visually-stunning as this one.
In JJ's version there would be dutch shots of the dialogue with average length of 1 second then some random terrorist attack would happen at the opera and Sheev would have to continue the story to Anakin while they are both running through a collapsing hallway with lights strobing.
>>64719525 >Watching Millennials try and edify the prequels when they spent years nodding in unison at how much they "suck", while disparaging the latest space-cowboy action flick marketed towards 13 year olds.
Looking back, this is probably the single best scene in the whole prequel trilogy. McDiarmid is just so wonderful as Palpatine, and the script is actually poignant and full of metaphor and tension in a movie where everything else is a steaming shitpile.
>>64720736 >>64720433 Yoda was one of the worst parts of the prequels for me. And his whole I need a cane to walk but let me jump around like a mad man was retarded. He should have been like Sheev in VI, and to use the force in some godly way but not moving around like a CG Muppet caught in a washing machine. If Sheev was doing that shit in VI it really would have made it was worse movie.
That lightsaber duel perfectly captures what is wrong with the prequels. Even leaving aside how fucking retarded it looked, we should never see Yoda take out a lightsaber. His character should be above that sort of thing. At least it was handled marginally better with Sheev because seconds after the reveal, he just mows down Jedi Council members like butter with simple thrusts. He does that corkscrew jump but at least it doesn't look as monumentally stupid as Yoda taking out his 2 foot long lightsaber. God I hate the prequels
>>64720877 I havent changed my opinion. But I guess it takes a truely shitty uninspired movie to show how the prequels really were. We were comparing them to the OT like comparing 6, who tries to be ambitious but usually fails, to a super model, then JewJew dropped off his fat retarded SJW step daughter, and now the 6 which cant compare to a model, and still isnt good, is much better than what we have now.
>>64724172 yea, it wasn't the best. they tried to do something different, and super powerful monsters from outside the galaxy as well as organic technology were all the rage at that time. starwars fans certainly gobbled it up though.
>>64724439 hell I won't lie, I ate that Yuzhan Vong shit when it came out, but now in The Current Year+1 It's one of my most hated parts of the New Republic universe, atleast it helped with the creation of Darth Caedus and Caedus is one of my favorite parts of the EU
>>64720039 Except it's not visually stunning at all, and the writing isn't anything special. McDiarmid's acting and the fact that it's the only scene in the prequels with interesting world-building is what sells it.
>>64720877 I seriously never understood how people could discount ROTS and call it the same kind of shit as TPM and AOTC. There is a clear line between ROTS and TPM/AOTC. ROTS works better as a real movie than ANH and TESB.
>>64724953 RotS is better structured than the other prequels, but it still looks like shit, has awful writing and mostly shit acting. It's much more entertaining than the other two though, mostly because it's much better structured and has funnier unintentional comedy scenes. Most memorable meme worthy scenes are from RotS.
>>64721311 What reason do they give for Yoda not having a lightsaber? There's no logical reason he shouldn't. In the OT, they say the lightsaber is the weapon of a Jedi, and Yoda is referred to as a Jedi (a Jedi master, in particular). Their vision of what Star Wars ought to be was ruined by what its legitimate creator made it. And they're just mad about that.
>>64721311 i wouldve liked the "its treason then" scene to have palpatine just sit there and lightning the fuck out of the masters while laughing. the others die and mace resists and forces him to use one of the dead jedis lightsabers to defend himself.
>>64731198 this people always say the jedi were weird in the prequels but thats the point. we see two real jedi in the OT and theyre both burnouts of a forgotten era. the prequels show exactly why the jedi fell, they were the fucking asshole know it alls who thought they knew everything.
the ROTS novel really hits it home. when yoda fights sheev he realizes that the sith changed, they evolved and all this time the jedi were preparing for the old sith, not sheevs sith. the jedi were literally blinded by their arrogance
>>64736826 Yeah, delivered the same movie we already saw, only better. People shouldnt be praised for not having an original bone in their body. JJ makes fast passed generic action flicks, he's basically Michael Bay. Sure you wanna tune put and watch some 'splosions TFA or Transformers 10 is for you, but no one will be talking about then 15 years from now. Despite the stronk womyn or diverse cast.
No one is saying JJ made a bad action movie, but he did make a shit Star Wars movie. And we should all stop pretending thats not true.
>>64738547 Man, why did Kit Fisto have to go out like that? He was one of the coolest minor characters in the franchise and he gets taken out like a bitch. He lasts a few seconds longer than those other two losers but that isn't saying much.
>>64719525 Honestly the two things I don't like about this scene are Ian's delivery of the line "from dying" as if he's winking at Anakin and Anakin's out of character faith in the story about being able to stop people from dying when he's depicted as a skeptic in many other scenes across the two movies.
>>64720877 Not everyone hated the prequels, only Phantom menace was a disappointment for me because I expected something extremely amazing but got lame cis robots and gungans in a lame as fuck battle.
Clone wars helped improve things with based Christopher Lee, Fett and clones.
Revenge of the Sith is my current favorite Star wars movies, best looking clones, best jedi battles, and was extremely enjoyable. Man clone phase 2 armor was so fucking sexy, takes both the best from both phase 1 clone armor and storm trooper armor.
>>64719806 That scene never ceases to puzzle me, on one hand McDiarmid's delivery is fantastic he always is as Sheev/spoiler] on the other him spilling the beans in such clumsy manner is utterly retarded. I guess Lucas truly stopped giving a shit about the writing with AotC.
