blame the REC remake and paranormal activity series. Found footage was around before, even before the blair witch project, but those came out two came out at the same time, did very well, and this was right around when Hollywood stopped supporting creativity and wanted nothing but remakes and carbon copies
if it wasn't found footage it would have been something else, found footage is just cheaper and easier to work with

look into Indie movies, At the risk of sounding hipster, Underground, older or foreign movies have some better luck. Avoid the big box office "hits", theyre just trying to cash in on the hype and are usually just dangling keys in front of people to get their money
