Since /tv/ is now basically /star wars/ I'll ask this here.
Does anyone really think any of the EU shit that was piled up on the original trilogy would have made for good movies?
I recently re-read the stories for jedi knight and shadows of the empire.
What a bunch of retarded cringe that was.
The entire EU is stacked shit ontop of stacked shit.
So many unlikeable mary sue characters and such a retarded power creep.
That's why I picked the illustration as an OP image. It's kind of symptomatic of the EU.
>Does Dash just have a perpetual fist pump going on or something?
He at least has a thing for posing like a absolute utter douchebag.
I liked the Aing-Tii monks
I thought they were neat
>all these faggots talking shit on Dash Rendar
Shadows of the Empire is god-tier. It's so good Lucas put Rendar's ship in the later editions of ANH.
>Tfw Luke was searching for Revan, and Rey is the way she is, because she's a literal reincarnation of The Exile, whose power was that people instictively followed her and believed in here, on top of a massive innate talent to figuring out force powers
not that there's anything wrong with that...
I want to see the X-Wing series get turned into either films or a television series. I honestly couldn't give a shit about most of the Jedi/Sith stuff. My interest in Star Wars revolves around the space battles.
I've been looking at getting the ebooks of the X-Wing series, but it's at least 50 bucks for all nine.
That's from the tie-in comic book. It actually started as a novel, and it was good enough that they decided to expand it into a video game and comic series.
Hell, it was good enough that Lucas put stuff from it, stuff that wasn't his idea, into his movies, and I'm pretty sure that's the only time that ever happened.
Those comics do look fruity as fuck though
That is true, but the Exile kind of did that sort of thing.
I mean think about it. They actually make it a plot point how she keeps growing in power, as she kills people. They literally make it a part of the plot, how she gains XP and levels up, unlocking new abillities like it's nothing.
Kreia never taught her how to use Mind Domination. She never taught her how to just Master Speed or anything else. She taught her a tiny bit about meditation, and Atton taught her how to play pazaak. Everything else, she did by herself, and they literally spell it out in the dialogues that this isn't an abstraction, but actually what's happening.
>OT heroes cowering in fear while EU mary sue saves the day
She was a powerful Jedi before she became a wound in the force either way.
Being a wound in the force is what allowed her to do that.
Where as Mary Sue characters get things just because.
Fuck... I wish I had read this post before I created the ultimate hero of my movies and your dreams... Seeing as Snoke and Kylo Ren were both just Red Herrings though I may be able to make use of this Evil Darkimus you mention.
Thanks for your help anon
Aye, but she is a wound in the force because she's literally the only person in the history of the galaxy who ever managed to walk away from war.
That is a Mary Sue trait. Being the single special snowflake who could accomplish something, which then turns her into a superpowered individual to the point where she manages to cripple a Sith Lord who is personally as powerful as the Death Star, by just standing there, and letting him try to attack her.
Cast for SOTE
Dash Rendar - Josh Brolin
Prince Xizor - Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa
Guri - Naomi Watts
Darth Nihilus. He was so above and beyond the power of Sheev, that he literally ate entire planets. He would just swagger over to planets on his broken spaceship held together by his will alone, manned by the crew of the dead, living still only by his will, and he'd feast on the lifeforce of the entire planet in a few insants, and leave it completely barren and dead.
That was Darth Nihilus.
Up until the moment The Exile showed up, Nihilus tried to take a bite out of her Force, and because she's a "wound in the force" it crippled him to the point where he could be disposed of by The Exile, Nihilus's former pain toy, and Mandalor (who albeit being the single baddest motherfucker in spirit, still has no place going up against a Sheev level entity like Nihilus).
ive been told the thrawn trilogy is good but never read it. some of the comics are cool legacy is nice and alot of kotor is cool. the trick is to set them far enough away from the original trilogy so it feels original
Ok. You, me - bus stop at 10pm.
Bring your blaster or lightsaber.
Oh hey, found a torrent for the X-Wing series ebooks, but they're missing italics and have quite a few incorrect... line breaks? I think that's the right term.
Eehhhh... I know the errors are gonna piss me right off, but is that worth paying for the official ebooks just for proper formatting?
What >>64579409 said.
I mean I make it sound bad, because let's be honest, The Exile is the single most massive Mary Sue when you look at her from a distance, but the entire story is structured in a sort of way that it doesn't matter, thus turning her into a classical hero alike to Odysseus and Achilles (who both are massively special and powerful), rather than an a Mary Sue.
the thing I find most amusing about the EU is how they expand on every little thing that was shown in the star wars movies for even a second. for instance, there's entire stories about that random bounty hunter droid
All the cheese aside, hildebrandt is a very good artist.
It's just that the subject matter of EU material is so fucking cringe inducing.
oh agreed it sounds very stupid. like a edgy oc on deviant art or some such. im just saying in the context of the game its in it serves a better purpose than just calling him something like darth evilkillkill
The Dark Empire comics (and some of the other very early Dark Horse comics) were literally the only good things to come out of the Star Wars expanded universe.
Dark Empire was a psychedelic gothic super-downer that was 10/10 beautiful on every page. Read it.
it looks gorgeous but the plot is evreything wrong with the eu. pointless retreading of themes and ideas from the original trilogy. superweapons that make the death star blink. and stupid shit that ruins stuff from the OT ie palpatine clones
Take in the beauty of Disney's new EU everyone. This is what we have to look forward to.
Shit on the old EU all you want but this isn't a good start to Disney's.
You could adapt a few of the better novel series into films. Honestly things like the Jedi academy series, or the x-wing series would be better served in a TV format.
Probably not surprisingly the EU was almost always at its worst when it was trying to stick too close to the original characters and the movie plot points. One of the best EU novels of all time is I, Jedi. A story about a completely EU character having to learn to use the force to save his wife who was kidnapped. He has to learn at Luke's academy, go undercover on some armpit of a planet, join a pirate crew, fly a piece of shit fm fighter for them, and eventually track down his wife and rescue her. It's a wonderful contained story that feels very much like star wars, there isn't anything stupid or pandering in it and it gives you every slice of the universe you would want.
The EU isn't all Luuke and suncrushers, sadly it just mostly is.
Also Rey is way the hell worse than Mara Jade.
Anything written prior to 1999 was shit
Luke encounters a few Jewish and they had no idea who yoda was.
And the writing for each character was shit
Chewies death by planet squash was cringe
There were a few good ones after 1999. Especially ones that didn't involve the main characters.
I read Republic commando series yearly without getting bored of it
Darts Bane series was pretty good.
There really isn't that much of a problem with the main character of an RPG being a Mary Sue. You inexplicably gain powers because you levelled up, there doesn't need to be an in story explanation. You get to be the badass hero who saves everyone because its a video game
>Han's black wife
>evil R2-D2 and C3PO
I thought Shadows was a multi media type project and e everything was planned at once? Like the book was written but there was an accompanying game and comic to drum up interest in star wars again before the prequels hit theaters?
I think they tried doing something like that again with The Force Unleashed but it wasnt as successful
dont forget that throughout most of the vader comic vader teams up with some young gurl who is a tech wizard and spaceship wizard and droid wizard and can literally technology whatever and she even falls in love with vader
she also has tatoos of PCB traces which makes no sense because PCBs don't exist in the SW universe.
>Is the new film completely disregarding it?
>Has there been any drama?
so far only anally devastated manchildren but since TFA sets the trend of completely ripping off the EU I wouldn't be surprised if some authors called them out on it.
Huh. I suppose I really should have thought to widen my search criteria. I'd only been looking for 'Star Wars X-Wing'. Didn't think to look for just Star Wars. Found a torrent with 270 (!) books and so far it looks like the series I want has been done without errors.
The reason I say she's a mary sue, is because while there doesn't have to be an explanation, there is.
The reason she is as powerful in-universe, is literally the same reason she is as powerful as she is, in the meta-game. She gains power through death. XP from defeating enemies is an actual, substantial thing for her, within the lore, even if it's not something you can put a number on, and so is the inexplicable growth of her power.
By addressing it in the plot, they make it part of the story, and part of her character.
But again, given the context, it's nto distracting, so while she looks like a Mary Sue, I think it's well justified.
Nothing in Dark Empire was as large as the Death Star. As I recall, DE had the Alliance and the Empire pretty fairly matched in size and strength.
The TIE drones were cool. The ships with the automated recycling bays were cool. The cloning shit was handled way, WAY better than it was in the prequels.
The republic comic series was great, a lot of people disregard some of the prequel EU - this was GOAT
>Mace Windu has a blue lightsaber
>Saesee has a purple one
>Even Piell has a red fucking lightsaber
>Plo Koon has an orange one
Wow. They couldn't have fucked that up more if they tried.
I remember Plo Koon having the same orange one in Jedi Power Battles and another Jedi had a red lightsaber for some reason. I guess so. It's just strange seeing it now when the colors have been established more firmly.
The EU used to be fan fiction with occasional input from Lucas, but with oversight form his people, now everything will be extremely high budget fan fiction with no input whatsoever from Lucas.
The people that make a distinction between the old EU and the new one, which is everything disney makes, is retarded.
>Cameron fags this buttflustered
M8 Sheev is tip top in the power rankings, what the shit EU fan that I replied to above doesn't realize is that in the EU Sheev is planet smasher tier as well
If Sheev is Planet Smasher tier, and has no interest in anything but his own power, then why would he want to create a Death Star?
If he was starting a dynasty or something, I guess I would get it, as his successor might not be as powerful as he is, but he doesn't seem like the kind of guy who ever planned on passing the torch.
Are you aware how insignificant plot is in regards to film making? Pretty much all stories follow the same structure, I'm sorry you looked for an intriguing plotline filled with twists and turns in a fucking Star Wars movie. It had space battles, had light sabre battles, had good visuals and entertaining characters. That's all a Star Wars movie needs
Sheev didn't just magically start with the ability to cast force element, it's really after episode 3 he has the time to dedicate himself to learning every fucking thing ever related to the Force since he has almost every holocron and force related object in existence in his warehouses. Parallel to that he develops the death star(s). He doesn't seem to have perfected force storm and similar crazy OP shit untill the second time he could take a break from ruling and delving deep into the dark side: after his first resurrection when he takes five years or whatever to recuperate.
Plus, it's integral to Sheev's plan that noone ever finds out he's a Sith, and he cant run around threatening anyone with ancient space magic. And really, even without a death star he could just gather a few dozen star destroyers and destroy any given planet, so there's never been a real logical reason for building a weapon of mass destruction.
>it was good enough that Lucas put stuff from it, stuff that wasn't his idea, into his movies, and I'm pretty sure that's the only time that ever happened.
Splinter of the Mind's Eye had some Empire Strikes Back material. Crashing on a swamp planet for one. I don't know if the author came up with it himself or Lucas gave him the idea.
>there are people who actually DON'T like Darth Krayt's Wacky Space Adventures
Are you 16?
This is the equivalent of that line in Spiderman.
>No it's you whose out Gobby
>OUT OF UR MIND!
Except at least Spiderman is actually a loveable campfest and it fits the theme of the character
>Dash Randar? Kyle Katarn? Thrawn? Old Republic era cast. Fuck those guys! Let's combine Ackbar with Grevious!
Legends may have gave his shit nuggets, but they didn't give us this.
Grand Admiral Thrawn's story line was awesome though.
I had no problem with the EU expanding on these guys
>4-LOM is tagging along with Zuckuss in order to better understand organics
>Zuckuss is like a methane-breathing bounty hunter monk, very much "true neutral"
>Dengar is a cyborg with little to no emotions. He ends up meeting a girl who helps him try to regain his humanity, which leads to him eventually helping Fett recuperate after the Sarlaac
But FUCK IG88 taking over the Death Star that shit makes me scowl to this day
I dont know what /tv/ thinks about the new canon and i dont care.
I think the way its handled much better than the old EU was. No more canon tiers, everything is just as canon as the movies are
atleast until disney sells the franchise kek. The stories are not just grasping at straws in the movies, they are not just pointless extensions. They are for all intents and purposes what the universe is.
Sure this means we will not get grand original stories like the Yuuzhan Vong but it also means we dont get millions of clones of every single major character from the movies and other retarded shit.
The coherency is what the old EU was missing.
>People think this is a valid criticism
Lmao it's dumb AF regardless mate, how about you actually defend what's being attacked instead of palming it off onto some irrelevant issue
Lemme see what I can rattle off the top of my head
>Sun Crusher (worst ship/vehicle design in all of Star Wars)
> The Dark Reaper from pic related (splitscreen was so goddamn fun in this. Base building/vehicle combat hybrid)
My brother. That shit is why I'm hyped for Rogue One even though I bet the director will shit the bed.
It was way more limited than a Death Star as well.
Sure, it could take out a few planets at once, but had no way to mobilize and it was obvious it was a limited weapon built to maximize damage before it was destroyed/non functional. After that second intended charge, it would in all likelihood be useless to the Order.
That's "Prince" Xizor, a super-criminal who thinks he's Vaders rival, and nearly rapes Leia with his pheromones. Also has a sexy cyborg assasin droid bodyguard that he bangs occasionally.
Dude gets mowed down like a minion by Vader at some point
You can still read and enjoy these stories, i know i will. But when i look at it from the perspective of franchise as a whole, its good they got rid of all the trash and are starting from the scratch.
Prince Xizor (Seezor) !
>(almost the) last survivor of a proud race genocided by Vader
>leader of Black Sun the biggest & best spy network in the galaxy (even the Rebels & Empire are jelly)
> he sleeps in a tanning bed/isolation chamber type thing which works his muscles for him, giving him perfect physique
>he has a statuesque blonde bodyguard lady who is actually a Human Replica Droid (don't think this sort of thing ever happened again in the EU)
almost forgot to mention his species produces natural pheromones which he uses to fug Leia
Yeah. Dark Horse did some of the most genuine feeling Star Wars comics, KotOR being my favorite despite the time vs tech issues that came with the setting.
I've never quite understood why Dash was designed like a Liefield character, nor why everyone else kept their original, sane proportions around him. Other portrayals of him are more toned down.
I keep hearing insanely stupid shit that came from the EU like there were zombie stormtroopers, a mountain that cried and the droid that the Jawas were trying to sell uncle Owen but had a malfunction in ANH was actually a force user...
>were zombie stormtroopers
Also in the new EU.
>a mountain that cried
and the droid that the Jawas were trying to sell uncle Owen but had a malfunction in ANH was actually a force user...
This was not canon to the old EU. It was an "infinities" story.
I can let go just fine, it's lingering fear of just knowing that Disney and their team of hack TV directors will recycle those characters & bastardize them.
I hope you like Joss Whedon's take on Fleet Admiral Thrawn played by Steve Carell, who'll just be this flamboyant faggot who just spouts funny quips. Also featuring his personal human bodyguard Guri, sporting a undercut, & also has a girlfriend because Joss has got to make the same Action grill lesbian for Social Justice brownies.
What does Joss have to do with Star Wars?
This made me remind of another fault of the EU's. Suddenly both Vader and Sheev had tens of super duper secret underlings/apprentices with super duper powers. Every god damned year a new one would pop out
Disney is obviously planning to use shit TV directors that can be easily pushed around in the same manner as they've always done with their MCU shit for these upcoming anthology films.
Stop! Just Stop!
Kotor 1 and 2 were considered NON-CANON by Lucas himself.
Revan, Malak, Meetra Surik and all those characters and ships never existed in the movies lore.
Just stop making shit up to apologise for the movies bad plot, goddammit!
To my understanding, it's a mix of that, and that she then walked away from it. She became a wound in the force, because she gave it up, she rejected it for what it brought. This is why out of all the Jedi who were there, she alone became a wound. Because she alone walked away.
This is also why in Lightside playthroughs, you can tell Sion that the reason you can beat him, despite the fact that he's standing atop one of the strongest beacons of the Darkside on Malachor, is that he is a slave to the force, while you walked away from it and became stronger for it.
Hey. Three of those were mine.
What movie did I make an apology for? (I'm first two and last.) I don't think I said anything about any of the movies, I just talked about something interesting.
Personally I think the Force Awakens is a piece of shit (I'm assuming that's the one you refered to) and while it would entertain me if they went the Kotor route with the other two movies, that won't change the fact that it's shit in my opinion.
As for it not being canon, here's a short list off the top of my head:
Old Republic/Old Sith Empire symbols in the Clone Wars. Malachor canonized as a horrific battleground in The Clone Wars. Moraband (Korriban's other name) on canon space charts. Rakata Prime on canon space charts, around the area where the missing puzzle piece from TFA pointed. And on top of that, there are parts of the new movie's score that sound eerily similar to a few pieces from the Kotor soundtrack.
Not saying it's canon, but Disney's doing a hell of a lot to make it look like it is.
>Final intense space battle between FO and republic
>Shits not looking good for either side
>A Super Star Destroyer leading a massive fleet warps in from the unknown regions
>TIE Defenders swarm all the cucks in their x-wings and shit TIE/fo
>Everyone gets BTFO
>Pic related is new Emperor of the galaxy
The sole reason it exists, is to make money.
I'll grant you it's well made, sure. But frankly, I don't give a crap how well something is made, if there is not a single reason beyond money, why anyone involved with the creation is interested in making it.
It's made by Disney. Refute that.
It just pains me to see such amazing backstory and well developed characters being thrown out the way just because of George's "muh Star Wars" hyssi fits...
The Force and the Universe of Star Wars is beautifully represented in those games as something with a lot of depth and meaning.
The movies just take a giant shit on everything people love about Star Wars
The Dark Empire comic books were based on one of the concept ideas George and team had for post RotJ.
One of them is that Emperor lives into the new triliogy, Luke does go to dark side, and his sister (there was concept that leia wasn't his sister and his real one was still out there) was the one to turn him back
See, this is one of those questions where it's painfully obvious that no matter what answer anyone would give you, you'd just throw it back and say "nu-uh!" because you live in this cynical little bubble with 0 faith in humanity.
Makes sense, considering where we are, but it's not something anyone can have a discussion about.
>The original OT wasn't done to solely make money
Yeah that's why everybody worked for free, you're a fucking idiot.
You literally said yourself that it's well made, well congrats you solved your own argument in the same sentence.
Ignoring the cynicism, and without claiming the opposite:
Which part of what I said implied that the OT is exempt from this?
It's interesting to watch people constantly assume points you're not even trying to make, because they're more adept at arguing with fictional people in their heads.
Yeah, that's what happen with Shadow of the Empire. It was a multimedia thing for all but a film. What really hit it's popularity was the classic N64 game. I think after that game, the SotE and even star wars as a whole and it's franchise was revitalized again.
If you think the new cinematic unsiverse will be better you're delusional. For all we know having different writers and directors for each movie will lead to the same clusterfuck eventually.
IG-88 was awesome in Shadow of Empire. Gets his ship blown off by Boba Fett over Planet Ord Mantell. Then Rendar, who's searching for Fett, comes across IG-88 in the junk yard and fights him. I think the fucker still lives.
I'll have a go
Cinematography beyond Jakku on par with your average blockbuster trash, stripping scenes of beauty or menace
Generic environments and setpieces
Action scenes dull and uninspired, lacking tension or power, choreography passable but never exciting
Relentless pacing (would not be an issue if it didn't feel downright padded at times, like with the freighter sequence)
Unlikeable characters with dumb or unknowable motivations and little development
Unremarkable soundtrack lacking memorable motifs and relying too much on old themes
Contrived plot based off coincidences and illogical decisions
Cringeworthy humor and dialogue at times
Don't try and say things like "but the OT or PT had these problems too". I'm judging TFA on its own merits.
It look like that but he survives it. He somehow escape it. I believe the reason for death fake out is cause Dash didn't want be held with the gang anymore or something like that.
not that he thinks he's Vader's rival, but that he wants revenge on Vader. He plans to ruin Vader's reputation gain support from Emperor's favor.
He wants Luke dead because he knows Vader wish to have him alive and recruit him. Emperor also wants Vader to receive Luke.
Hence why Xizor went to Jabba the Hutt to have his men take out Luke.
>IG-88 took over the second death star and then the death star exploded
Yeah. but that didn't happen in Shadow of the Empire. I believe that was from Tales of the Bounty Hunter novel.
>Some IG-88 (code for heil hitler?) robot uprising would be a far better story than what happened in TFA.
I believe that also happen in one of the old EU stuff.
>IG-88 is a Take-No-Shits super assasination droid with plans to take over the world in the EU
As someone who never read the relevant literature, I have to wonder if they ever made a point of him and HK-47 having something in common.
If we count SWG as canon, then HK-47 was definitely around long enough to breed a new form of super droid in IG-88's form.
>Hey, TFA character might be based on X because of similarities
>X ISN'T CANON ANYMORE SO FUCK OFF
Why do so many of you autistic faggots do this? Not only does it not have any bearing on the conversation, but it's almost like a projection of how buttflustered many of you are about the EU going in the trash.
Some Star Wars shit is based on Flash Gordon. Should we bring up how non-canon to Star Wars it is any time it comes up?
The x wing series would have adapted well. The problem with the old EU is that it was never part of a master plan. Just different authors writing stories that try not to conflict with anything previously established in older books.
Disney was right to drop it. And this is coming from someone who grew up with the EU.
>tfw on his death bed George will announce that the entirety of the Star Wars universe was leading up to Flash Gordon, and that it was "A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." from Flash Gordon's Earth.
At one point he said that The Force Unleashed (The game teased with some random Sith brat pulling a Star Destroyer out of the sky, and for which, he suggested the name Darth Icky) is canon?
I need you to sauce me on that man.
How about a Biggs Darklighter spinoff? Including 70ies moustache.
