Avatar, The Matrix, and Fast/Furious are the only ones I can think of.

Anon, I have bad news.

i don't think 15+ years is that recent

Pitch Perfect

Fast and Furious isn't recent at all either.

The Matrix and Fast & Furious are like 20 years old.

Also the Avatar sequel is going to bomb and all but the most delusional of Cameron fanboys can see it coming.

Based on a fairy tale. There even was another movie based on that same fairy tale one year before.

Why are horror films generally a safer bet to go with when launching a new original IP?

Cheaper and easier to market perhaps?

Cars
>>
>>64545586
>Cheaper and easier to market perhaps?

Pretty much. Just look at the piss poor budget of stuff like Paranormal activity or Blair Witch Project, and then look how much they made at the box office.
People don't really care about production values or quality when they see a horror movie, they usually want cheap and easy thrills.

In a geological sense late 90s-early 2000s is recent.

The ride counts. It was really popular for a long time and had many tie-ins (records, books, etc.) before the movies.

If you had a certain pass about 10-15 years ago you could go up to walt's offices above New Orleans Square and look at the original storyboards and the concept art. It was very early based upon the ride.

Interestingly enough, Capt Sparrow appears to be a creation of someone aside from the original storyboarders.
>>
>>64545971
Shrek is based on a book though.
>>
>>64546008
Fuck, really? I actually didn't know that. Are the others okay?
>>
>>64545971
It's weird that kids movies are more creative than mainstream Hollywood.

I mean, they're cookie-cutter plots and all, but at least they're not officially based on something else.
>>
>>64545995
Ofc it was based on the ride, but a ride is quite a lot different from the movies.
Only jack sparrow exists in the ride and 80% the other shit in the ride isnt in the first movie
>>64545931
>it had tie ins before the movies
Source? As far as i know it only got really popular with extended material after potc got big
>>
>>64546008
Didn't know that. 1990's book? It looks pretty good. The drawings are kinda cool, in a minimalist, almost child-like, way.
>>
>>64545969
Monkey island was inspired by the ride as well. They fed off each other.

Borrowing ideas isnt an adaptation niggers, there are no truly original ideas. What we are looking at is SOURCE MATERIAL
>>
>>64546027
>Finding Nemo shares many plot elements with Pierrot the Clownfish, a children's book published in 2002, but conceived in 1995. The author, Franck Le Calvez, sued Disney for infringement of his intellectual rights. The judge ruled against him, citing the color differences between Pierrot and Nemo.[13]

Let's cross out Nemo, I didn't know it either, maybe it's a coincidence but who knows.

Despicable Me, Cars and Ice Age seem alright, I can't find another origin despite a quick look on wikipedia.
>>
>>64546058
I have the 70s record of the ride (got it from my granfather).

Not my vid, but it's the same record.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFW4aEDYjWo

There was a book with it, but it got lost a few years ago when we moved. I also have a comic book (80s).

Hehe get it JACK all hehe
>>
>>64546058
>Only jack sparrow exists in the ride and 80% the other shit in the ride isnt in the first movie

After POTC2 they redid the ride to

1) include jack
2) include geoffrey rush
3) finally get rid of the wench auction and the wench chasing due to the implied rape
4) When they are dunking the latino man to get info from him his wife no longer says, "Carlos dont be Chiiiicken" she says, "Carlos, be brave!"
>>
>>64546287
It's still "based" on it. They share the title.

Just like John Carpenter's Vampires is "based on" John Steakley's Vampire$, even though the only thing they have in common is the name of 2 of the characters and nothing else.
>>
>>64546313
[triggered]

i specifically remember the wench auction as something that stuck out to me as a history nerd of a kid. thought it was a really cool detail they put in.

Makes sense really. Children want to see something cool and new. Adults want to see something that reminds them of when they were kids.
>>
>>64546329
Its not an adaptation though
>>
>>64546603
It is. Officially, it is called that.
