Now that TWOW is confirmed to be getting spoiled by the show, are you going to watch season 6, /tv/? Or wait another 5 years before getting to finish the the series?

I am literally done with ASoIaF. I'll go back and read them when they're all out.

The worst thing is how little self-respect it shows GRRM has. If his statements are to be believed then he hasn't even outlined ADOS so he's basically guaranteeing he won't finish the series. Apparently all the brilliant planning of the first three books just happened by accident or something.

This. You'd think the fact that HBO adapted your books and you have a finite number of years to publish in time would give you the best incentive to finish. But it's seemed to have the opposite effect.

It should have been listed in the terms or whatever that he finished the last two books before shows end or no money, etc.

The show has such shitty foreshadowing. Since the plot is so cluttered, they never have characters reminisce without it being important. You can easily predict plot stuff because of that

>Brienne takes 5 minutes to talk about how much she hates Stannis
>GEE WHIZ WHAT COULD THIS MEAN??

I hope they fixed that this year
>>
>>64518427
>>
>>64518324
>He never outlined cause he lost the plot

the point of outlining is to not get lost in the details of writing whole chapters with prose and descriptions, and focus on where you want characters storylines to go and what the big climactic scenes of the story need to be. if he doesn't "like" that part of the story, the way to fix that problem would be to plan everything and rewrite the outline until its more interesting, not just forge onward page by page.

the fact that he's got so completely stuck means he was just lucky to basically have that stuff arrive in his head as he went along. he didn't have to specifically labor to structure the story. I literally assumed he was a *less* improvisational writer than it turns out he is because the first three books seems so perfectly assembled and free of mystery box shit just intended to keep the reader turning pages.
>>
Martin really failed. I know he admitted that himself but that's just unprofessional. He could still travel wherever he wanted and finish the book. It's that his style of writing is so incredibly, unnecessarily slow.

Outlining is actually really rare among famous writers

You get a better product without it because your imagination runs wild, but you get fucked over later when it comes time to wrap stuff up. No fucking way people like Rowling and King plan shit
>>
>>64517215
This. The show is now and forever will be the definitive canon
>>
>>64518537
>his style of writing is so incredibly, unnecessarily slow.

the first three books were published within 4 years of each other.

it really does seem that he didn't want to plan the rest of the series or didn't know how to.
>>
>>64518627
Generally, they know what the start, end, and big thing in the middle is going to be, and then string christmas lights from thing to thing.
>>
I'm torn. On the one hand I feel absolutely no sympathy for GRRM - he took the money and as a consequence his story will be spoiled for millions by the tv show which actually had the wherewithal to deliver on deadlines.

On the other hand, I'm really sick of GOT. It's like they don't care about the characters anymore. It's all about delivering shocks which fall flat and plot points that don't make sense.

One good battle scene a year shouldn't be enough to keep me coming back... but I probably will just because GRRM is crying about it.
>>
>>64518709

He called his style of writing "gardening". He plants seeds and lets them grow, with a vision of how it should all look once it's done.

Then around ADwD, he had his "Meereenese knot" where he wrote himself into a corner and had to do a bunch of rewrites to get out of it. Im guessing that this keeps happening more and more, the longer it goes on.
>>
>>64518627
people get used to working a certain way and only planning ahead to a certain extent. then they don't want to kill their darlings.

it wouldn't surprise me if the version of his story GRRM has been straining to shit out is less interesting than a lot of the fan theories, but he's going to stick with his version even if he hates it because its his.
>>
I'm not saying ASOIAF was great literature or anything but the minute the TV show aired and attracted all the old Harry Potter fans ruined it.
>>
he doesn't care about his work, he's the anti george lucas, he gave it all up for shekels and just wishes the fans would forget about the books
>>
>>64516571
I haven't decided yet. Part of me is saying yes because if I don't all the major plotlines will be spoiled for me by the ADD retards who don't read the books and only watch the show.
>>
>>64518844
it really depends on what he means when he says rewrites, and how much actual prose he has to write before he realizes the story has become implausible.

the thing is that I KNOW he introduced characters like Arianne because he wanted to do something specific with them, I just wonder how many hundreds of pages he writes and then discards because he runs into trouble and has to go back and completely redo something he could have fixed at the treatment stage.
>>
>>64518904
Honestly, who WOULD care about something they've spent 20 years on, has literally over 100 dangling plot lines, like 20 PoVs and no end in sight? Nobody will be willing to work on this crap after Martin dies of fat

has he killed his own series?
>>

Why not get Linda to finish the books? She's a great writer, here's a sample from one of her fanfics

>A wrist-thick braid—intricately woven out of a silken wealth of midnight-hued tresses, like a cascade of tangible shadows and twilight—falls down her back to just past the curve of her waist, and even in the most meagre of lights it is tinted by a lustrous sheen of deepest indigo. What often draws the eye, however, are the bold streaks of bright silver at each temple, and tendrils of moonlight glint amidst the wisps of smoke which surround her face, tempering the keen edges of fineboned yet strongly defined features; a slim, refined nose of noble prominence between high, sculpted cheekbones, the steep line of her firmly set jaw and the sharply narrowing, determined chin. Within this distinctive frame, set below loftily arching brows and veiled by lengthy fringes of sooty lashes, are striking eyes of liquid darkness, tinged with a subtle shimmer of purple iridescence.
>>
>>64520156

I have seen their peoples garland them with flowers, and shed the blood of goats and bulls and children in their names. And I have heard the prayers, in half a hundred tongues. Cure my withered leg, make the maiden love me, grant me a healthy son. Save me, succor me, make me wealthy... protect me! Protect me from mine enemies, protect me from the darkness, protect me from the crabs inside my belly, from the horselords, from the slavers, from the sellswords at my door. Protect me from the Silence." He laughed. "Godless? Why, Aeron, I am the godliest man ever to raise sail! You serve one god, Damphair, but I have served ten thousand. It was just delaying the inevitable. If this didn't happen this year it was going to happen next year.

The books are not the show and the show is not the books.Treat them separately.

Also is based Natalia Tena back this season?

Aerys II was paranoid about the threat to all his children/grandchildren for good reason. So he sends Viserys and Dany to dragonstone along with his wife.

Then the lannisters come to fuck up kings landing, Varys switches out the infant Aegon with a baby from Pisswater Bend, and secretely sends Aegon away to Essos and his friend Illyrio

Dany and the Wall was a mistake. The series would have been far better if it just focused on the events of the war between the Lannisters and the Starks. Just have all 7 kingdoms get involved and the war of the 5 kings still happens but none of shit at the wall or in Essos or even Aegon. The books just got to big after the third one but even in the first three Jon and Dany always felt so disconnected from everything else.

Poe went to stretch his legs around the corridors of /TV and noticed his friend Raymond "Ray" Plight down the hall. Curious of what he might think of J.K. Rowling's writing he asked Rey.
Rey told him "She just apes Roald Dahl and Terrance Dicks". This left Poe, short for Poestar O'Reginald completely dumbfounded by what he had just been told, he was so shocked in fact that a red hand mark glowed from his forehead. "I think I need to stretch my legs for a bit" Rey muttered to Poe.

I don't give a fuck about gurm but at the end of the day the series is his, he has a greater attachment to it than anyone and if he's fed up with it and can barely stand to write it anymore that's his prerogative.

He lost it all the way back when he first tore up the original draft of Feast of Crows. I don't know how bookfags hate on the show and call it cancer when the books series became a pile of shit. Book fans are delusional. Yes, the first 3 books are good and ASOS is one of the best fanasty books of all time but let's not pretend that the last two weren't subpar and were quite frankly just bad books. In the future ASOIAF will be seen as a series that could have been something truly special but instead became a a bloated carcass that never even finished and inspired a TV series that was seen as groundbreaking when in reality it was shit.

Linda is literally /tv/

I don't hate Game of Thrones for passing the books. I hate it because it could have been so good but it has failed so horribly. If it was doing the books justice, it would be much less of an issue that the show is passing the books. Not great, but less of an issue.

I also think it was incredibly stupid and irresponsible of the showrunners to rush through books four and five. Especially since its now clear they have to stuff much of the material back in anyway. They could have taken their time instead. Since its clear they can't write their own storylines if their lives so depended on it, it would have benefited them to give it more time.

I can see the series ending like mass effect 3 at this point.

In TWOW Jon will get revived by Red Milf, sent out to do shit wholly irrelevant to the endgame at stake, maybe some shit with the iron islands, ending with some sort of climax at the wall with the walkers arriving in force.

In ADOS He will be sent south to rally allies against the coming walker invasion while Dany makes landfall in the north to end up assisting the Boltons for some reason, so it ends up being a three way between the walkers, The Boltons + Dany and dragons and everyone else.

The endgame will be Jon Meeting up with treebran for the deus-ex machina ending-

A- Kill the walkers
B- Control the walkers
C- Merge all life with the walkers

In the special episode that just aired last week they did a weird episode that took place 99% inside Sherlocks head. It's one of the worst episodes of the series so far but she isn't wrong that they had characters that were supposed to be part of the woman's suffrage movement in KKK style clothing towards the end. That said moments later Sherlock basically says they were the good guys and murdering men that are mean to women is fine. Ultimately none of it mattered though because it was a mind experiment Sherlock was doing to figure out how Moriarty was back at the end of the last episode of season 3. (He's a computer virus btw and they don't actually explain how he figures that out he just does.)

I don't think that idea actually stands up when criticized at all. Spoiling twists that are particularly emotional in nature is bound to remove some of the emotional impact those scenes could have had. If you traveled back in time and told somebody that cried during the red wedding what was going to happen when they were still in the middle of season 1 their emotional response to it would become pretty minimal. They might enjoy the rest of the series all the same but for those specific moments they would definitely miss out on the emotional experience of the moment and while that's a pretty small part of their experience with the story it's still something.

They'd probably enjoy the rest of the series even more because they could see the dramatic buildup to the event, even if they claim that knowing one detail ruined the entire experience for them. I always enjoy a movie or show more upon rewatching because I have a better idea on how to interpret the story and can notice more of the details the creators used to craft the work. So? You can experience the same thing on repeat viewings. But the emotional response to something like a twist is a one time shot. I could enjoy watching season 1 of game and mentally jack myself off over the foreshadowing that he's going to die but that in no way takes away from the initial feeling of shock you got when consuming the media.

Going further GRRM specifically has said multiple times that he wants his viewers to actually be afraid when their favorite characters are in danger. Knowing spoilers about that persons fate completely removes any hope of that.

It goes back even farther than that. He started writing ADWD soon after publishing ASOS. After writing for years, he decided to split what he had and release it as AFFC. AFFC was an unplanned book.

maybe it was to show that dragon taming isn't easy
maybe it was a boondoggle and a misdirect
maybe it was just to get the dragons released
maybe he's not actually dead, as the theory suggests

we'll know in 5 years when the book comes out

Quentyn shows that the dragons are dangerous, allows the fat man to flesh out Essos more, creates a relatable, ordinary character that stands out in a cast of extraordinary ones (he<s what most people would essentially be in Westeros), and he sets up Dorne against Dany.

He was far from useless.
>>
>>64519905
man, that fucking arc

i have to believe he's alive, there's no way someone would right such a purposeless arc
>>
Problem with books 4 and 5 was that they were too afraid to wrap anything up. Instead they just introduced more and more plot threads that didn't go anywhere. I can only assume he was thinking he'd extend the series again but now that he's old he just wants to get it over with. It's going to be impossible for him to write a satisfying conclusion, and I don't think D&D will fare any better either.

I think the opposite is happening in the show. There seems to be a good chance that Varys will be in Dorne. I'm just assuming the show is that predictable.

reminder that this will never be in the show or it will be 100% butchered if it gets in

>“Foes and false friends are all around me, Lord Davos. They infest my city like roaches, and at night I feel them crawling over me.” The fat man’s fingers coiled into a fist, and all his chins trembled. “My son Wendel came to the Twins a guest. He ate Lord Walder’s bread and salt, and hung his sword upon the wall to feast with his friends. And they murdered him. Murdered, I say, and may the Freys choke upon their fables. I drink with Jared, jape with Symond, promise Rhaegar the hand of my own beloved granddaughter…but never think that means I have forgotten. The north remembers, Lord Davos. The north remembers, and the mummer’s farce is almost done. My son is home.”
>>
>>64549441
based Manderly. You do nothing but think of him as an idiotic sack of shit for a good part of the books, then THAT meeting with Davos happens and suddenly he becomes based as fuck.

Feast gets way too much hate. It has the problem were it's following Storm, which is hands down the best book in the series, but Feast is filled with great arcs. You have the Kingsmoot and all the goings on in the Iron Islands. You have Jaime in the Riverlands. You have Cersei slowly becoming Robert. Her chapters really shine as we see things from her point of view and realize just how inept and crazy she really is. Really great shit in those chapters. And Brienne's arc is fucking top notch. Really doesn't get the love it deserves around here. I wrote a long piece on Brienne's chapters and her character back in the days of /got/ that was received well. Really, the only shitty part of Feast was Dorne. Dorne is just horrible.

Gaiman is trash. GRRM deserves a lot of flack. I understand he doesn't want to feel beholden to anyone, but that's the trade off you make as a successful professional. You have expectations placed on you and you are expected to meet them. His lack of follow through is also harmful for other writers of long series. More and more people will stay away and just wait for things to be wrapped up. GRRM and Rothfuss are both assholes. Scalzi is the only non-fat shit who actually has any discipline to keep working.

my assumption is they would've been fine even with a split book or some shit at that point, but the fatass hadn't even done the necessary for that to happen.
>>
>>64553035
They could have easily just split the last season like the books. 1 season for AFFC and 1 season for ADWD. Would have gave GURM more time
>>
>>64553173
More time to do and accomplish nothing, sure.

It'll be a miracle if he can even get the book out before season 7
>>
>>64553345
Would have also gave the show enough time to not be a rushed piece of shit like season 5
>>
>>64553173
Season 5 and 6 are already splitting up parts of Feast and Dance. By season 7, they will be entirely uncharted territory

They really thought if they made it 8 seasons they'd have enough time for George to finish, they just really underestimated the laziness of Lord Too Fat to Finish his Books
