I think the problem with Season 2 was that he originally wanted it to be a novel, but they kept pressuring him to adapt it to TV. In a novel he would've had more time to flush out the character arcs. Here he had to kill them off because he didn't each character was spread so thin because they all had to share screen time.

who gives a fuck about the characters dying, entire fucking season was complete garbage anyway. actually it's good they killed them so we never have to suffer through that garbage again

Realistically none of them were going to get a happy ending. Sometimes being the truest detective means getting shot to peices.
