Here the new design atleast has some meaning and purpose, it isn't just for show.

Kylo Rens lightsaber is the extension of his character: highly unstable, crude and amateur build and very powerful. The vents are on the side because it has a cracked crystal inside the hilt which produces a unstable beam that needs those 2 vents just to work properly.
