it's just Mann but more abstract and more surreal than Heat or Collateral. If all you care about is a good plot, you won't like it, but there's plenty of visual subtlety and characterization to make it great.

Mann's other films feature this stuff as well, but casual viewers don't care because their plots are tight enough to keep them interested.

Based. Nekromantik is really love-or-hate film. I hated it in first watch than I bought Arrow Video release and watched the commentary by Buttgereit. I simply really love exploiation and for me it's a perfect one with beautiful imagery and soundtrack. And I'm into necrophilia and there isn't much porn of it.

yeas thief is one of the truly great films. honestly, when i came down to picking a mann film, i just went with the first one to come to my head because they're all so great (except collateral which is only okay). i like exploitation too (big fan of ruggero deodato and bruno matei) but i've just never gotten around to nekromantik.
>>53199493
honestly love this list. the dante, costa, mann, godard, bujalski, haynes, and duras are all great choices. definitely curious with regards to the snyder (which i've not seen but not heard great things about) and the wachowskis (which i have seen and quite liked but probably wouldn't put on a list of my favorites). the swanberg is just okay imo. i think he's definitely made some better films (art history, marriage material, and the zone).

15 is a tough number. I like the first ten on a different level than the bottom 5, and I could have probably found 15 more on par with those.
I don't really get those people on letterboxd with "favorite film" lists that have a hundred entries. I can't tell if they're easily pleased or just not very discerning
>>
>>53202534
I like how you threw in Eyes Wide Shut into this horrific list, as if you were the one to fully understand what Kubrick was on about. A guy who puts Memento and Inception on his favourite ten films list.

>full meta jacket though
>>
1) 2001: A Space Odyssey
2) Metropolis
3) Network
4) One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
5) Casablanca

9) Das Boot

14) Dr. Strangelove
15) Lawrence of Arabia

if the other two had been okay it would've been okay. But if you focus on neither what you have is what that movie is. Something that if done by an amateur is called garbage, but Godard? let's praise it.
