I pretty much recommend either this or the original Mobile Suit Gundam if you want to get into the basis of the genre. Zeta arguably better and can be watched without having seen any other Gundam. The animation is pretty good for it's time, memorable characters, and decent drama. If you can get past the age then it's a rewarding watch. Of course, there are other ways to get into the mecha genre, it doesn't have to be through Gundam.

People who watch Death Note as one of their first anime enjoy it, they then go on to watch more anime and possibly watch Death Note a second time and they find it doesn't really hold up, it's not as good as they first thought when it was the first thing they have seen in the medium. People who use /a/ know this as they watch a lot of anime so when the word 'entry level' gets thrown around it really means the show isn't that great when you have watched a hundred or so series', or at least it isn't as good as you first thought when it was one of the only shows you have watched. For the record, Death Note was one of the first animes I watched I thought it was gods piss, I was the cancer I am complaining about, I then watched more anime and I watched it again. Coming from someone who finds most anime to be utter garbage, I think Space Dandy is fantastic. I have never found any anime as mature or as intelligent as this one (including films, and I'm pretty sure I've seen all the good ones:Dbz, Naruto, mononoke, most ghibli films,Outlaw Star, Yuyu hakusho). That is not to say that it doesn't have elements which are designed to cater to a less mature crowd, like excessively cute sounding robots or the occasional unnecessary (and stylistically jarring) gratuitously sexual outfits and angles of the characters wearing said outfits. The stand alone episodes are also sometimes not up to par with the series, but I don't find that they take anything away from the really fantastic main storylines.

The animation is not as good as anime films, but overall I think this series is considerably better than both of the films, and head and shoulders above every other anime series out there.
But in the end, Anime simply cannot match the caliber of American tv series( HBO ) or even Japanese films like Hana-bi.From a critical perspective, it's juvenile NEET pandering garbage.

Which animes you think are the best? The problem with animes is that there aren't many serious quality ones or they are not that strong. Death Note being regarded as the best or one of the best is pretty normal because of that reason. It is one of the very few serious and quality anime shows ever. There's only one battle with the titans before the human titan is shoehorned in as the main baddie. You obviously watch a lot of anime if you thought AoT was good, because terrible pacing is nearly synonymous with the medium. Here's what would have happened if this was a western TV series:

S1: Same beginning, rest of show is training/establishing characters/fighting titans. Season ends with climatic battle of trost where Erin is killed (and trost is lost).
S2: Eren becomes a titan, but isn't a Gary Stu right away and spends the rest of the season trying to control his ability. A large portion of the season is focused on the internal quarrels and the politics on what to do with him. Season ends with retaking of trost but appearance of female titan to counter Erin's newfound Gary Stu status.
S3: Focus on Scouting missions, establishing external beachheads, learning more about titans, chasing and finally capturing the female titan.

I watched it thinking it would be appealing to a westerner, but alas it makes the same "let's rush the plot to introduce this over-the-top powerful enemy" mistake that I've seen in most animes I've watched.

On the top of my head I rank couple of these to my personal all time favorites (live-action shows included in some cases).

Pretty much the whole GitS franchise, expect Arise, which was just a bad attempt from the crew to try to replicate everything that was good with the franchise in the first place without actually understanding the substance of it.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes: just a great and fun series for a historybuff like myself and you can clearly tell tha the original novels (to which the series is based on) autohor is one aswell.

After these I can't really decide that which particular movie / series I like the most since to my oppinion both of the franchises mentioned above are in a sort of category of their own. Sure I like most of the stuff that is on the list posted on this thread, Monster comes to my mind especially and I'm looking forward of seeing how HBO handles the liveaction project that was announced sometime ago.

Overall I haven't watched too many anime movies or shows, maybe around 150-250. I tend to be quite picky about the quality of them. Since I'm not in to braindead moeblop genre or too action orientated shows, so that sort of cuts out most of the shows that are available, I've noticed that there seems to be less and less anime available for my picky taste each year. I think this trend started somewhere around 2006-2008.

Great, that isn´t happening in all rec threads and if it happens it´s by far not written in stone that the person looking for shows has to watch them in that order, the person is still a human being with free will. If an order is given he has the option to ignore it or follow it. When discussions about the order/list come up there is a better chance the person can form his own opinions as that would reveal parts of the shows themes and content.
Rec threads are more about getting some actual good or at least worthwhile results. It is near impossible even finding the few shows a season that aren´t moeshit, let alone the ones that aren´t moeshit AND worth watching.

That's the only one I've ever watched.

A host on a podcast brought it up once, saying how it really played with game theory and bluffing really well. I watched it on that recommendation and did like it. Then it switched gears half way through and wasn't as good about it.

It still had the problems that really keep me away from anime though. The awkward upskirt knicker shots of very young looking women. The high pitched squeals of female characters that make it sound like you're watching a japanese porno. There's always a teen romance that is cringey as fuck. And there's the whole weird hashes on their heads and big snot bubbles and over exaggerated movements. It's just all very adolescent. I haven't found an anime that has avoided all of these, but this was the closest and I powered through it because I did enjoy the guessing games.

I honestly can't even think of something to recommend. I've watched a lot of anime and found most of it to be either garbage or mediocre. You really have to wad through oceans of shit to find anything remotely decent. Yet I keep watching it mostly because I'm just beyond burnt out on regular television.

My biggest bit of advice I could offer is to completely avoid 1-cour adaptations of unfinished works. Just don't even bother. This should really free up any backlog you might have because unfortunately this is like 50% of what anime is nowadays. Just glorified ads for the source material. Most of them don't even have proper endings and it just feels unsatisfying as fuck. Just do yourself a favor and don't waste your time with this shit.

Berserk is the best by far. Aside from that, I can pretty much find something to appreciate about pretty much every anime I watch since I have very low standards when it comes to anime. I recently watched Watamote and the first 3 seasons of Slayers, both of which I liked for what they were (though that 3rd season of Slayers was shit). The only anime that I can say that I hated was Samurai 7. I'm a big fan of Seven Samurai and this show is just a disgrace. Everything about it is shit from the character designs, music, story (because they fucked around with the plot), animation, the list goes on. This Samurai 7 was the only anime that legitimately pissed me off. Fuck that show.
