It saddens me that, for what little he makes these days, he gave all the pieces for a good romance, or at least an interesting story - Aeris and Leo having a childhood friendship and Aeris even having a bit of a crush on him, versus how they seem to barely be able to stand each other in the 'modern day' of the comic. So I checked out the website for the first time in a very long time and it's still shit, natch, but I noticed this fairly recent strip indicates that Leo and Aeris live together; she returns (from a shitty retail job?), saying "I''m home", and Leo mentions "our couch".

They're supposed to be living together? I don't recall it doing stuff like this years ago. They just appeared on page together to do the joke. Is it pandering to shippers? As pandering goes it's pretty harmless, though.

Aeris seemed to have a crush on him when they were younger, but Leo's ended up immature or he just was the whole time, but when they were kids that was cool. Maybe they even had a relationship at one point, but it's obvious they have separate rooms now and Aeris can barely stand Leo half the time. Either they're roommates-with-benefits, or just roommates.

I have looked too much into the story of a stupid internet comic the author has probably stopped caring about, please help me.

To be fair, that's just my guessing. He's able to afford games and stuff, so he probably has some sort of income. Aeris doesn't seem like the type to let him loaf around on childhood memories alone. Maybe Leo is a legitimately fun guy despite his annoying behavior, and she enjoys hanging out with him and having someone to game with.

Maybe I'm completely wrong and they're fucking like cats in heat whenever the comic's not going, but Scott doesn't care enough to expand on their story or make some sort of romance arc. You could go a lot of different ways depending on what comics you look at, and if nothing else a childhood crush was outright shown - maybe it's just mellowed over time and they just fight like an old married couple.
