Oh well the basic plot is this:

The Gems discover a Gem who had crashed on Earth before the rebellion started and thus thinks Earth is just another loyal Homeworld colony. Steven convinces the Gems to play along so he can try to convince her to join the Crystal Gems. The Gems however are not fans of this plan and are trying their best to keep Steven from asking too many question with this new guest of theirs. They've got some secrets they're trying to hide. Not only that, but this Gem is taking a liking to Steven that leaves the Crystal Gems unnerved.

As for the ship aspect, Steven's relationship with Peridot serves as something that grounds him in his project with the Gem they found (Cinnabar btw). Steven was bit too optimistic with his plan, and Peridot helps him understand what he's dealing with. She also provides a lot of support, advice, and info that the Gems wouldn't have given Steven directly. Not only that, she serves as an important puzzle piece for Steven's character arc through the fic. I won't say much, other than that he's going through a metaphorical puberty.

The show was about those 3 and their relationship and then suddenly turned into a chosen one shitfest that ended in a climatic battle with only akko and her rival, instead of her friends, fighting some stupid shit and nuking happiness.
