Weekly Challenge (Running 8/10-8/16):
>This week marks the 85th anniversary of when Lego was first founded. Build something to celebrate it!
Thread Challenge:
>Take an old set and update it into something that could be released today.
Anyone hear anything about special editions, whatever, to mark the anniversary?
maybe actual lego firearms for the american market
>>6475111
>thread challenge
That underwater set got one.
pls r8 my prototype micro mech thing
It's hard to pose and flimsy as fuck.
Damnit, guys!
I used the squeeze method on two minifigure polybags, but i didn't get what i wanted in either of them
Any advice?
>>6475136
looks easy to break. is the feet the only attachment?
>>6475136
Looks like the dude made himself exoskeleton in his garage. Nice job.
what's that grail you want so badly /lg/?
>>6475147
The Elves marketplace set, or the scorpion palace from Orient Expedition.
>>6475147
The set containing all the sets.
>>6475140
Git gud.
Seriously. You get better over time. Or just buy the ones you want from BL.
>>6475147
Cafe Corner has always been one that got away for me, but I don't if I'd consider it grail of grails. It was already around when I was 14 or so, and into Lego, but alas, never got one because I was dumb teenager and 150€ was crazy amount of money. Entered dark ages some time after.
I make thing
>>6475131
Man Google Express had that set listed as 3.50 for some reason, but when I ordered them, they just canceled and said it was out of stock. I get that it was probably just a pricing error, but it was still pretty disappointing.
>>6475167
She comes with dual rapid-fire needle guns.
RIDER KICK
>>6475161
>Git gud.
I did get the right ones on several previous occasions, it just sucks when i don't
Also, one of the store workers started staring at me, so i got nervous and rushed it
>Or just buy the ones you want from BL.
I would, but with shipping and such, it's a hell of a lot more expensive
>>6475175
Look. Most of the figs have some things to distinguish them for the rest. Tell me what figs you need and I'll let you know what you have to feel for.
>want this hoodie for my sigfig
>no back printing on CMF, and other sets haven't been inventoried yet in BL
I'll understand why they made them different. Doesn't mean I have to like it.
>>6475177
The first one i looked for was the winged spear guy in Series 15, but mistook Janitor's Broom for his spear
and the other was the double-body samurai demon from the new Ninjago, but when i thought i had two bodies it was the old guy and his cereal box
>>6475192
>winged spear guy in Series 15
He has big piece of armor. Janitor doesn't. Try to put your fingers to the hole torso goes to.
>double-body samurai demon
Which one? For normal Garmadon, check for bar piece. His hat also has flat top, as opposed to Wu's slightly pointed one. For flashback, go for 2x2 tile and pajama, feel for helmet or kitchenware. Sensei has brick and tile which is something that none of them have.
Never feel for only one thing if you're not sure. Try to confirm with something.
>>6475147
Monorail!
MONORAIL!
MONOOOOOOOORAIIIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!
>>6475203
Thanks
But it's also a bit annoying, since the only store i know of nearby that sell them place them right by the counter, so it's not unusual that the workers start eyeing me
Do you get that?
>>6475211
Not really, because every store that stocks CMF here have them at Lego aisle.
>>6475211
Well, you could always just buy a bunch and then return the ones you don't want.
>>6475203
Oh, and also, the normal garmadon, but there are at least two figures in that series with a bar like that
Guess i'll go by the hat
>>6475167
A very nice thing. She looks like she could use another pair of wings, maybe two?
>>6475152

Mind explaining why?
>29 posts already
New thread when?
23€. Worth it for the panther alone?
>>6475136
looks like it would be hard to pose and flimsy
>>6475167
i want that bugg boipucci
>>6475219
I like whimsical fantasy stuff. Green is also my favorite color, so I wanted to get the green dragon for modding. When the set came out, I was in a place where the exchange rate was bad and a Lego store was my only Lego retailer. I waited too long for a deal which never came, and then it was gone. I'll probably just Bricklink the dragon one of these days.
>>6475211
>it's not unusual that the workers start eyeing me
I used to worry about this, then I realised the worst that can happen is they ask you to stop feeling the bags. And if you're just worried about looking a weirdo, well, you're an adult and you're buying Lego, there will always be people that think you're weird for that so fuck 'em
>>6475147
it used to be 6339 Shuttle Launch Pad, but I realised removing nostalgia, it's not an impressive set compared to more recent/shuttles/launchpads
>>6475231
no, unless you're really really into black panthers
>>6475147
>what's that grail you want so badly /lg/?
Futuron Monorail in sealed box.
I saw it in a store when I was a kid but I knew that I only got $100+ sets for Christmas and it was only April.
>>6475231
>23€. Worth it for the panther alone?
Considering you can buy the panther for $5 directly from Lego...
>>6475254
The most expensive set I was gifted in all of my childhood was about $35

Black rapier.
>>6475269
>who take everything for granted
Where did you get that
When I was a kid we lived in a Depression-era house without central heating, just an old furnace in the living room that we'd all gather around in the winter. We literally kept a cow in the house for heat whenever the furnace would quit working. I slept with an electric blanket because the temperature in the room I shared with my sisters got below freezing. Until I was in school, the only Legos I had were a shoebox of loose pieces that a neighbor gave us. After my parents got better jobs they could afford to buy me more stuff but I'm still the cheapest person I know because of how I was raised.
I don't want to turn this into a pissing contest, but I cherish all my broken pieces and don't throw any of them away. Maybe I misspoke; I should have said, "the only time I would ever consider it possible to convince my parents to spend $100 on me was if it was almost Christmas".
>>6475334
You think THAT'S bad? We lived in a single room apartment with no running water, so everyday I had to boil sea water to drink any. My parents fed me nothing but street tar and quicklime until I was 15. I had to perform cold fusion to keep us warm in the -70 degrees in winters.
>>6475345
You think that's bad, I lived in New Jersey.
>>6475347
Can't top that.
>>6475231
I would say its a solid set.
>>6475136

>>6475396

>>6475414
Jang mostly reviews bullshit ninjago and chima etc. sets, though. I kinda love watching nostalgic set reviews. I love him nonetheless
>>6475428
>Jang mostly reviews bullshit ninjago and chima etc. sets, though.
That's not true. He's done all the nexo sets from the past wave, and besides big bang stuff, all of the City stuff from this year's summer wave. And lots of StarWars stuff, and all the TLBM sets. You're just really wrong.
>>6475439
>You're just really wrong
Don't sperg out, retard. I was using exaggeration
You did not understand the meaning of my sentence, which was to say that JANG mostly does new set reviews, opposed to vintage set reviews, which is why people like Bricktzar are fun to watch
>>6475454
>which was to say that JANG mostly does new set reviews,
Then say that, instead of implying that he misses 90% of lego's product line by ignoring all but a handful of themes.
>>6475463
A healthy person can understand rhetorical and figurative speech, but to you, specifically, I will make everything clear and explain things very slowly
Stop me when you can't catch up
>>6475469
Not him but I don't see how being able to understand figurative speech has anything to do with your original statement which objectively meant absolutely nothing related to your intended point. Chime in if this is a mistaken assumption: did ANYONE here read the intended meaning from it? I certainly read it literally.
>>6475478

>>6475543
Probably dark tan. Fits very nicely with a wide array of other colours, works nice as both primary or secondary colour for a lot of things, and my favourite piece, masonry brick, comes in it.

JC Stunt Team set when?
>>6475543
Dark red, dark orange, and/or dark tan because they're so cozy looking
>>6475488
I've been looking at the XP too, and the prices don't seem too unreasonable. 100 for a sealed one is a bit much, but a complete boxed one is only 55 on bricklink
>>6475899
OK, thats fucking off the chains right there, I love it and Jackie looks really good.
>>6475543
I really like light bley for the industrial/mechanical look
I've been looking at the instructions for these Friends sets, and I realized something that bothered me in the official pics.
There are no workers! Sure, there are sets where the girls own and operate their own small startup businesses - lemonade stands, smoothie stands, and foal-washing stations, but the Heartlake Mall comes with four minidolls, one who shops at the sporting goods store, one who's getting a facial, one there to take pictures of the dog show, and... ok, the DJ is technically working there, but where are the cooks, the cashiers, the manicurists? Is the boy with the camera skipping out on his pizza job to take pictures of dogs? Is it a do-it-yourself spa with a suggested donation box?
This mall exists in a capitalist vacuum where the minidolls are free to wander in and out of shops, taking goods and services willy-nilly with no oversight. Paradisa box art businesses were always staffed to ensure children understood their place in the market.
>>6476029
Why would you need employees and workers if everything's automated?
This is a brave new world, created when the fleshies finally exterminated all of the yellowfigs. Now everyone's genetically-engineered to become perfect beings, free of work.
Oh, look, Olivia and Matthew are taking a fun plane trip together! They'd better check their bags, but who would know if they didn't run them through the scanner because they're apparently alone on the tarmac! And don't worry kids, you'll have lots of time to sit and visit, because this plane's not going anywhere without a pilot!
>>6476029
minifigs are the worker class
That's why they're always scientists and construction workers and space ninjas. The minidolls live a life of privilege. Doing as they please and running shell business to occupy their time between visits to the pop star mansion and Stacy's dog park
>>6475306
>notallblacks
>>6476029
There ARE workers. In this set
STephanie works at beauty saloon, Boy works at pizzeria and Sports shop and emma just came in with her car
>>6476033
Well, that certainly makes this set a little less depressing, because I was picturing her driving her own tour bus to Heartlake with her backup singer to perform for their single fan.
>>6476037
This makes sense too.
>>6476066
>>6476037
>Dollfigs are privileged bourgeoisie
>Fleshies are military/superheroes "warrior" caste
>Yellow minifigs are the untouchables, forced to work but never coming into contact with the upper castes
>>6476077
Technic/Jack Stone are the untouchables
>>6476084
Technic are genetically-engineered giant workers created by yellowfigs long ago to run the giant machines that mine for klocki. Since then, the others have co-opted their labor.
Jack Stone is the untouchable caste.

>>6476077
>>6476298

>>6475147

>>6476155
We already established that minidolls live a life of excess and hedonism
>>6476331
what about Duplo figs?
>>6476036
That's because this set is just an extension of Heartlake Airport.
Also Olivia is a flight attendant not a passenger.
>>6475167
>>6475171
>>6475173
I love it. The colourscheme has this nice oldschool aesthetic. The hint of pink for contrast works great.

>>6475543
OG dark gray
Followed by very shade on the pink to purple scale. All cyan/torqoise tones. Then mixing them tastefully with OG primary colours, blacks and grays.
Lime and tan are probably the least used for me.
But i can respect using them for AYYs and johnny thunder desert adventures.

Jang's real name is Bamadeli Shangbumni, and if that's not foreign, I don't know what is. I tried to find out his address so I could send him some unique pieces and my sigfig, but I'm not a detective enough to get it. Anyone know? I remember one video where he read some stuff from fans, the 300,000 sub special, so is his address is probably out there. I even wrote a touching note as well. I think he lives in the Bay Area. If some Anon could help me out, that would be fantastic.
>>6476911

>>6477078
Do it. If you like it and won't get it then you'll regret later, but you'll never regret buying it even if it won't be as good as it seemed in the pictures. Worst case you just strip it for parts.

Whats your favorite asteroid, dinoshit?
>>6477192
In the last couple years I've noticed they've been doing some City sub themes that have nothing to do with the police or fire dept. There were the Deep sea divers/salvagers, volcano researchers, and just recently some jungle expedition sets came out and they have a cool new panther/jaguar as well as a man eating plant, the updated crocodile and I think new tarantula piece. I think there were also a bunch of airport sets too.
>>6477205
Yeah the jungle sets are cool. The thing about City is tha tthey're a bit to plain so they don't do much for me. Even as a kid I thought city was meh. Why would I want a Garbage Truck when I could get, say, an alien space ship or an evil knights lair?
What's the best way to make a lego cigarette?
This looks like he is holding a porcelain bathroom tile and five inches of PVC piping
>>6477236
Honestly, I think that's charming though. It kind of fits in with the absurdity of the world. I could totally see this as a bit in a Lego movie--normally small items that have to be huge in order to fit the single-size Minifig grip hands. It's a really good in-world gag, don't destroy that.
>>6477244
Yeah, I think I agree. Lego has bizarre proportions and both the fans and TLC cherish that
I am still unsure about the pack of cigs, though. It looks off.
>>6477244
They do this multiple time with the food in the Lego Movie.

That should say "other" not "on".

>When you have a list of pieces you want how does this work? Just look up the parts and rattle them off?
Apparently it's easier for them if you give them the element number, not the part number.
I had all the part numbers written down, but once I started the order, I started searching them all to give the rep the element numbers instead.

So I'm trying to rate the Juniors Batman vs. Mr. Freeze set. I'm thinking a solid 7/10 for Playablity and a passing grade for Swooshability. But what about WLGSBT-ability? I figure a B or C, but I'm not the expert on that.

Huh. I lived through and loved Ice Planet, and I never saw any relation to Nexo Knights for some reason. Even in the colors. Guess it needed a more distinct shade of blue, and copious amounts of white, to make the connection for me.

I guarantee people will be hoarding the new Falcon set thinking it will take off like the old one.

I can't see myself paying $5 for a figure
>>6478373
>Do you guys think that it'll get cheaper once the new wave is almost done?
Not by much, because cracklink prices are usually determined by scarcity, and most of the pieces circulating there are from people who harvested sets, so you only get one tiger per $150 set. Keep in mind that you are never going to see them cheaper than what Lego is currently selling them for online, because resellers who are buying them in bulk will be marking them up from that price.
If you want them, and don't want to pay $8-10 per cat and have to make multiple orders to get all the ones you want, you should probably just buy a lot of them directly from Lego right now.
I have the feeling this is the only set the tiger is ever going to appear in.
>>6478376
Anon makes good points. Get what you need from B&P before the resellers clean them out. I also concur that this might be the tiger's only appearance.
We have any drawfags in here? Was in a /tg/ drawthread and requested to have any of these guys drawn in a more realistic style, figured I'd ask here too.

>but I wonder if you put all these bikes s8de by side would go to far ninjago and not enough punk. Thoughts?
You can always strip off some of the extraneous stuff that marks it as Ninjago-specific (gold katanas everywhere, etc.) and use the base build for more techno-punk looking stuff.

Sure, some great builders post on there, but most of the elitism stems from the old guard still over on Flickr. Eurobricks is mostly kids and AFOLs obsessed with the newest dual-molded minifigure legs.
>>6479926
I take it you're buying the $100 BB-8 set next month.
I was super into lego when I was in high school, then dropped it when I started uni. I mostly collected classic castle stuff (black falcons)
Is lego still shit now, or is it worth getting into again?
>>6480098
90s and early 00s are widely considered to be worst time for Lego, so yes, it's gotten better.
>>6480098
Some of the new sets use some clever techniques. It all depends on what you'd want to collect, and if there's a single newer set that speaks to you.
>>6480098
It's a great time to be into City, but there is a lot of division on whether the current Castle themes (the sci-fi Ice Planet-inspired Nexo Knights or the sci-fi Ninjago) are truly "castle" themes.
Ninjago counts as part of the Castle line because Ninja was part of the Castle line, even though it's morphed into its own branch these days as a more-or-less replacement for Pirates (Ninjago has sky pirates).
Space is still just Star Wars. There hasn't been a new in-house space theme for years.
The Creator and Modular sets are amazing, and range in price from sets like the outstanding Corner Deli ($30-40 if you can still find one, they're discontinued as of this year) to the Assembly Square which is a mini-city all of its own. There's also Ninjago City, which is brand-new and one of the largest sets ever produced and is also a mini-city. That's not part of the Creator line, but it might as well be.
>>6480106
Quality is slowly getting better in some areas and worse in others. The blindbag minifigs are made in China, so on occasion you get a piece break right away. A lot of other pieces are made in China now, but I don't buy enough new stuff to have a comment on the amount of cracking parts from new sets.
>>6480098
Quality's declined a bit since a lot of production is now in China. Parts selection and set design got pretty amazing. The castle series is massively better since it's Nexo Knights now.
>>6480106
Basically everything that's dual-molded with sharp separation (minifig legs compared to Bionicle G2's crystal add-ons), elaborately painted (Star Wars buildable figure heads) or made of PVC (certain helmets and hair pieces) gets made in China.
Plastic quality took a nosedive due to the parts being made of translucent plastic that they add color pigments to so pretty much everything can potentially break, including standard shit like 1x2 bricks and lates, and it's a crapshoot when, how or if something will crack.
The parts that are most prone seem to be "cheese wedge" pieces, Technic axle connectors, minifig heels and clips.
Dark brown parts also seem to be extremely prone to breaking according to various reports.
>>6480140
Don't overestimate this. The proportion of broken pieces is something like 1-5%. When the previous standard was parts never breaking and lasting for decades, that's huge, but objectively it's a low percentage, especially if you're buying used.
>>6480139
Injection-molding machines are getting cheap enough that any Chinaman with $2000 can buy one to run in his living room. They're going to keep getting better.
>>6480140
Most of the stuff you buy on Bricklink is in good condition unless it specifies in the description. Sellers are usually pretty good about reporting the condition.
>>6480136
>plates
Also, no, parts breaking has next to nothing to do with hamhands.
http://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/how-much-abuse-can-a-single-lego-brick-take-343398/
>In the experiment, the team used a standard 2×2 Lego brick and placed it onto a hydraulic ram. The ram pushes the brick upwards towards a metal plate with a load cell, which measures the force applied to the brick. The team set the machine to do its work automatically, so they could observe from a safe distance outside the room. After the ram was activated, the 2×2 brick managed to withstand an astonishing amount of force, finally giving in at 4,240 newtons, the equivalent of 950 pounds.
If you can put a force of almost half a ton into your fingertips you should be fighting Frieza on Namek instead of playing with plastic bricks.
>>6480140
It's not THAT bad.
I've got pic related, and aside from that I've got eight or nine minifigs from the same line that are intact.
>>6480156
2x2's are much stronger than 1x pieces
>>6480136
The most important thing is they are almost always break on molding points.
>>6480203
Yeah, this is especially notable on the minifig heels.
The plastic swirl is exactly at the bottom of the hole which is also the thinnest area of the leg and that point will crack when the legs stay connected for too long (even more so when connected to all those translucent polycarbonate parts).
Ironically this doesn't seem to happen with those Chinese/dual-molded legs since the plastic is softer.
Saturn V, a birthday gift from my sister, is coming in the mail tomorrow.
Will I have a good time /lg/?

Is there anything I can do when buying parts on Bricklink to avoid knock-off parts? Anything I should bare in mind?
>>6480476
Nobody sells knockoff parts on bricklink.
>>6480478
Nobody?
>>6480476
This >>6480478. If a store was knowingly selling large quantities of knockoff parts as part of their business model, people would find out and tank their feedback.
MAYBE sometimes one or two parts slips past. But remember that the high quality knockoffs have only been a thing for the past few years, and mostly bought by AFOLs, so they haven't really seeped into kid's collections the same way megabloks have. And most of these sellers are purists.
You can tell, too since even the top quality knockoffs don't use the lego logo. Your only potential problem is the parts that don't have the logo.
>>6480483
Nobody. If they were selling them their store would be shut down very quickly.
>>6480478
>tfw i WANT a bricklink for knockoff parts
>>6480494
I wonder if it would be economical (for either party) to contact one of the chinese manufacturers and order bulk amounts of knockoff parts to sell. Make sure to choose parts that are AFOLs want. Either unique designs or unique recolors, or both.
>>6480672
That 1x1 stud with mixel ball.
That, or any of the "plate with studs on both sides" pieces.

>mixel joints in new colors
>mixel joints in new sizes (i've seen a 1x1 socket but that's all)

>recolors of every other part
>>6480679
>That 1x1 stud with mixel ball.
Ya know that's a real lego peice, right? 3614a
Granted, it's only available in red and yellow and they haven't made the piece in nearly 40 years.
>>6480687
Exactly my point.
>>6480687
>Granted, it's only available in red and yellow and they haven't made the piece in nearly 40 years.
A light gray version was in a few of the early Harry Potter sets.

Hopefully with the release of that polybag the price on bricklink will go down a bit.

Anyone else going to try using some of the new fish headgears as alien heads?
>>6480672
I'd get a ton of shit in quantity if I could.
Finger hinges, bi-directional hinge bricks, and a couple hundred of these rounded 1x2 plates would be nice to have.
>>6480672
Mostly just stuff in colour combos Lego doesn't make.
Looking at you, 3x10 wedges.

I'm pretty sure those yellow guns in the middle are based off of actual Lego guns that came in the set in my picture.
Or did you want yellow ones specifically?
>>6480899
These look great, but I really cant justify buying a whole set of knock off parts for the handful of useful pieces.
Also I did think about buying some chinkshit previously but I went to log in today only to find out aliexpress is holding my account hostage demanding I give them my phone number to reactivate it for security purposes. Which to me is a screaming red flag.

Any Amsterdam people here?
I swore i got all the Ninjago cmfs i wanted in one go, but somehow missed the scarf metrosexual and got a second sensei Wu instead. If anyone in the neigbourhood wants to trade let me know. Doesn't even have to be this wave or cmfs in general stuff so feel free to ask if i have anything you want.
I'm still angry about the Lego Ideas Adventure Time set.
A Fun in the Park style box of minifigures with some little props would have been about a million times more exciting than the abomination we got.

Or you could fuck around in LDD until you're experienced enough.
>waiting on tiny orders after the first one does like 75% of the build
>>6482026
God, that's sexy.
I just got an idea, do you guys think that if I got a plastic molding machine like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2DVt-k_CU8
then i could make custom lego pieces?
>>6482131
That's how it's done, yeah.
The 3rd party market is pretty robust at this point, I remember years ago they hired out the production to local companies and it cost several thousand dollars per run.
Maybe ask around and see how they're producing parts now?
>>6481880
Personally I'm for a pass/fail rating of swooshability, but dag if that isn't swooshy as heck.
>>6482131
Unless you have something already in mind, I'd say skip the molding and buy an engraver. Several sources have told me that it's decently lucrative to take a desktop engraving machine to conventions and carve people's names and such into bricks. According to this website I've just found (https://www.rolanddga.com/products/engraving-machines/egx-350-automatic-engraving-machines) you can lease a machine for maybe as little as $120 a month or buy it for like $6k. If you charge $5 a brick (that's what my local Lego store charges) thats like around 30 bricks a month to break even. And using some round numbers like 1300 bricks to pay off a machine. That isn't factoring in brick costs exactly and labor and cost of stalls at places, but that's the basic idea. And that's a fancy machine. You might find something cheaper that could be just as nice. Anyways, that's my input.
>>6482185
Isn't the real trick to find something like this, or making bricks, or custom printing, that HASN'T been done before?
>>6482197
You're not wrong. It's difficult to figure out a niche in Lego that hasn't been done and is still Lego.
>>6482197
The thing about an engraver/engraving Lego, unlike making custom bricks/prints, is that you can use it on more then just Lego.
>>6482185
heres the thing, I want to get a molding machine and make exact copies of older retired pieces. My brother works with cnc machines and could probably help make the molds, only problem is i don't have the time or money at the moment.
>>6482218
...You know that printers and injection molding machines can be used to make pretty much anything, too?
>>6482226
yeah
>>6482096
I try!
Surprisingly sturdy so far, I only had to make one change to the wing roots due to a plate orientation oversight, now I just have to hope the landing gear holds up (weight tests from the support points /seem/ to).

You'd be surprised. 3x10 wedges only exist in the oddest colours though I swear.
...and apparently they're in dark purple in a superfriends set that isn't inventoried yet, FUCK. I could have rejiggered the colour scheme for that but it's too late now.

Lovely. Normally I hate reverse taper wings like that, but this thing is exotic enough that they work.
>>6482332
I honestly didn't think I'd ever use reverse-taper on a plane buuuuuuut inspiration...
For all the "ha, dragon form should make this easy to adapt into a plane", this shot was the best reference, the dragon stuff really only carried over into the tiny-offset "scales".
Just got back into LEGO with the Saturn V. About to order 1500 bricks off Rebrickable to build 2 MOCS I found.

>>6477181
Yes, but I read somewhere around ten years ago Lego stopped producing them because there was a problem in the mould and they couldn't or wanted to mrepair that or just didn't want to make a new mould.
This mould is also from early 70ies? and they make most of the time trees in new sets from normal blocks or with the leaves pieces they have since the Forestmen.
