For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

Frame Arms Group Build

This time the idea is to build any Frame Arms, or Frame Arms Girl kit, and paint and customize it.

The rules are overall pretty simple, the base must be recognizable as FA or FA Girl, other than that there's no limit on what you can do.

Due Date: September 1st

Note: This is a prize build, there will be a prize provided by me, there will also be a mystery prize provided by another anon. That means that to enter, I need WIP pictures submitted before the due date. Simply email me some pictures of you working on it, I don't care at what point, as long as it's possible to tell where your final product came from.

Prize Pack:
MSG Free Style Bazooka
MSG Impact Knuckle
MSG Beast Sword
MSG Assault Rifle #2
Miscellaneous supplies

I'm probably going to add more, but I'll let those be a secret.

Email: [email protected]

I'm also available via IRC and Steam.

Only good for acrylic. Those filters will not stop enamel or lacquer thinner fumes

I'm also entering this and it's my first build, so we can comfort each other for our mistakes.

I'm maybe 1/3 of the way along the build so far and my only mistake so far was trying to build on my deck - one part didn't fully seat and popped out at high velocity, never to be seen again. Luckily, it's one of the green/gray runner parts so there was a spare.

Also, keep in mind the pins on the body are fragile, go slowly and pay attention so you don't have to pull things apart. I forgot one of the PC joints and had to pull it apart once, and it's pretty clear it won't survive that more than a few times.

They literally just announced/unveiled it at SDCC, two weeks ago.
That's it.

I've finally got everything welded, puttied, and sanded, now the only thing stopping me from [{FUCKING} FINALLY] painting my Super Space Command GM is, I have no idea how I want to place the silver and Matte black on the shield.

I find that hard to believe because it's blatantly obvious if something is a dry transfer. It's entirely clear and there's a sheet of waxpaper.

But to answer your question, it comes with stickers and dry transfers.

And I agree of the oversilver, it's a bit much on my Zaku Warrior.

That said, one more fiddling, do the tips or just the edge trim?
>>
>>6462970
Cool, thank you. I thought they were dry transfers, but the guide says most modern kits dont come with those. I could be mistaken though.
>>
So I'm halfway through building a HMM Liger. This thing is sex. It's big, the level of detail is amazing and there's something really satisfying about the weight of (half of) it in my hands. Is this what it's like to build a master grade?
>>
>>6462970
Also, general question because I only build MGs on rare occassions;

When's the best time to apply decals? Normally I forget to do it until after I finish putting the thing together, and I'm really worried about taking the kit apart for fear of breaking it (ESPECIALLY since it's a Zeta)
>>
>>6463104
MG Zeta 2.0 is 12 years old. It's not modern by any sense of the word, it predates Action Base connections for crying out loud.

>>6463205
The Zeta 2.0 has so few decals it really doesn't matter.
>>
What would be a good cutoff point to consider "modern" these days, anyways?

I feel like MG wise, we stopped seeing tons of innovation around... MG Age-1? You still see new joint ideas being tried out every now and then, but Age-1 came out during the hell that was vEW and vRM's endless frame reuse. And that trend kinda just kept going thanks to P-Bandai rearing its head.
>>
>>6463236
I'm still disappointed MG Age-1 Spallow and Titus phoned it in so hard. The Normal's engineering was a god damn marvel.

I'm still waiting for someone to make a Full Glansa/Assault Jacket conversion kit, because Bandai is probably never doing it.

Since I'm Europoor I mainly manage to scarcely find Tamiya products but I guess a lot of these tools can be imported, right? Any recommendations??
>>
>>6463307
Tamiya stuff is pretty good, just typically overpriced.

Any pair of cutters in the $35 range is usually of good quality. I personally use Volks's. Knife wise, it almost certainly doesn't matter. Just get a new blade.

The camera angle doesn't help. It's supposed to look like it's flying forward but I lowered the angles so it would be better viewable.

>>6462876
Thanks, that was my intent. There are a few streaks on the frame but they all initiate from the outer armor and don't impact any joints.
>>
>>6463307
As far as hobby knives are concerned, you can use other branded ones like Olfa and Xacto, whatever's available locally.

You can use cheap brandless ones too, but get their replacement blades as well and switch it out every few uses.
>>
>>6463016
Hmm I'm leaning towards 4 now.
Maybe try just one variation on that with the silver following the inside angle of the handle looking part off to the tips as opposed to a straight across line.
Not sure if that makes sense.

Even the Japs were worried that the Unicorn would be worse than the Zeta, but the madmen at Bandai actually did it. There's also a fuckton of undergating on it (moreso than on other RGs), so they've obviously planned ahead for P-Bandai kits.

Oh, and as usual UV light makes the clear parts glow.

I am an idiot. Painting question.

You know how people say thinning acrylics with the proper thinner is usually 50-50.

If I pit two drops of white and one drop of grey, mix it together to get a certain shade, do i put three drops of thinner?
>>
>>6465199
White is usually a thinner color than grey, so.

There's no set formula, really. Anything anyone tells you is just a rule of thumb. You got to eyeball it and get the consistency you need because the viscosity of the paint varies between brands and between colors.
>>
>>6463445
I literally just throw the older ones in a box and forget about them. I'm much like you, a lot of kits (I think I'm at 60 in 6 years) off and on, and just now starting to properly airbrush and whatnot. So yeah. Storage. I've used some for spare parts.
>>
>>6464677
Wasn't the angle I had in mind but I think the one you used works perfectly. Bottom looks much nicer as well.
>>
>>6465199
Yes, to start with. the 50-50 thing is a baseline to start. From there is it too thin? add more paint. too thick? more thinner
most do not go too far from this ratio, maybe like 60-40.
but yes, 1 drop thinner for every drop paint
>>
>>6465199

3:3 is the same as 50-50, yes.

As for exactly how much you should thin the paint, it depends on what kind of paint you are using.
>>
>>6464530

The beargguy is consistently a hit, you'd think a beargguy girl would sell like hotcakes.

>>
>>6466060
The Man Rodi wasn't an incredibly popular kit. While it is technically possible to get a Landman Rodi (Man Rodi+Options Set 9) it would have to be repainted in Tekkadan colors whereas this one comes color and detail accurate out of the box. It's not as if you can't get a Landman Rodi outside of the P-Bandai set, but like most P-Bandai stuff it's just bunch of extra effort saved.

The Lupus Rex Lance is from Hashmal- it's a manga weapon that never got anime screentime.

The one next to the axe is a long range gun that Gusion used with its booster equipment. The gun formed the nosecone of the configuration and it is more powerful and has much more range than the usual graze long rifles it normally uses.

Okay so since the OP guide doesn't really cover this, maybe someone can help me out?

So basically I was wanting to get one of these as my first kit (leaning towards the ground type), and it's obvious I'll need some basic stuff like nub clippers and sand paper, etc. But since the sticker use here seems very minimal, I'll obviously need some panel liner and some rubber cement or whatever for getting rid of seams.

But in addition to that, I don't want to just have a plain panel lined gundam, I want some heavy weathering on it as well. I really like the look of having a model that seems like it's been sitting abandoned and forgotten for years after a battle, and really want to get that effect with minimal painting knowledge (aka none) and in the cheapest way possible. Pic related would kinda be what I'm going for across the whole model.

So tl;dr - What's the cheapest way to get pic related's efect + other basic stuff line panel liner, cement, etc. with me being 100% new to gunpla stuff?
>>

>>
>>6466760
Temper your expectations, you're not going to get weathering short of actual skill. Consider buying the kit you want, and then the cheapest HG you can find (Hi-Mock, older GM, etc) You'll also have to buy a bunch of tools for weathering and it's going to add up to more than you're expecting or wanting.
http://otakurevolution.com/content/laymans-gunpla-guide-weathering-general

If you take nothing else away from this post;
Expect your first kit to look bad. It's not going to be nearly as good as you're hoping for. Just try not to give up. Everyone starts somewhere.

Is Amiami cheaper in total cost or is amazon?

Amazon wants to ship things like 2 weeks out, but amiami has basically 3-7 day shipping for $20 total. I just have to HGUC kits I want to buy that are on sale for like $9 each, and I can't imagine they'd be more than a pound.

It seems like amiami is the way to go for this since the shipping will end up about the same with amazon but be a week slower in general.

Also will a shitty murrikan hobby shop that only sells RC and model planes/boats/tanks carry a good enough selection for paints? And would they possibly carry panel lining as well? I have no idea if other kits use panel lining or how prominent those tamiya products are to non gunpla builders, and to get to an actual hobby shop that would carry this stuff is like 4 hours away.

Any tips on how to separate these two assemblies for painting?

Basically the N13 + N3 shoulder piece separating from the big #36 arm.

Pic related. Let me explain.

#36 has a t-shaped peg with a circular head, and N13+N3 have a smaller circular hole that lets #36 rotate but not be pulled out.

So it's like a a C-shaped bracket hole that locks in a T-shaped circular peg.

I want to be able to put back #36 in after welding and painting the shoulder piece, so how?

When I was building my Baselard I was thinking on that, and my solution was going to be sanding the areas I circled here, then putting masking tape on the top of 36's t-joint.

Alternatively, magnets. Remove the top part of the t-joint, glue magnet. Place the second magnet where the top of the t-joint goes inside the shoulder bit.

So a relative of mine gave me pic related, saying she bought it for her 12 year old son not knowing it's a model kit set and assuming it was prebuilt.

I'd like to build them for the kid and give them back but there's so many stickers involved they're going to look like shit unless I paint them. But I have no experience with any of this so I need a basic tutorial/advice, like what kind of paint to even get.
>>
>>6468852

copic pens are the best but NOT multiliners. The ones you want are copic modeller. Hobbysearch is the best place online to get them.

The other option is enamel washes which is definitely easier & cheaper to obtain. any enamel will do, thin it around 70% thinner 30% paint roughly (adjust to personal preference), apply to panel lines with a brush, then clean up excess with lighter fluid on a qtip. Lighter fluid will not harm acrylic paint.
>>
>>6468924
>I have no experience with any of this so I need a basic tutorial/advice, like what kind of paint to even get.

Dont. Painting takes practice & skill to get good, its not going to happen on your first build. The guide in the sticky will give you info on basic stuff.

>12 year old son

Thats actually the age Bandai are aiming at with that kit. Best thing you could do is buy some nippers & 400/800/1200 sandpaper and hang out & help them build it. Be a bro.

Okay, I'll probably ask him if he wants me to help him build them. I guess I'll use the stickers for the eyes and small details cause I don't want to mess up, but the really big ones for the inside wing colors of both Charizards worry me because it doesn't seem like they'll go on flat at all.

Have anyone try http://www.bandaionline.com/ for P bandai stuff?, looks cheap than gentei kits
>>
>>6469202
Factor in the shipping;
I want a Pale Rider Land type.
It's 2722 yen plus 780 SAL SP on Gentei (3502 total) which is 31.61, give or take.
On Bandaionline it's 22.70 USD, but 13.90USD for Registered Air Mail for a total of 36.60 USD.
Granted it'll get to you quicker for that $5 extra, but if you're patient Genteikits would probably be the cheaper option.
Not sure how it works out in terms of your specific order - what you pay for shipping will be significantly different from me. Just keep in mind that shipping costs are every bit as important as list prices in terms of getting a deal.

I'm testing it out with Amuro's Mk-II. The biggest differences is that you pay in USD, not yen, and their cheapest shipping is more expensive than Gentei's.

For example, on Bandai Online the Mk-II goes for $45.50 ($31.60 + $13.90 Japan Post Registered Airmail), while on Gentei it's ¥4,660 (¥3,780 + ¥880 SAL). Since Registered Airmail delivers within 8-10 days it's going to get to wherever I am pretty fast, so if you normally go for EMS for expedited shipping then Bandai Online is going to be a pretty good choice. However, if you're in a place where SAL packages from Japan get delivered quickly (West Coast USA, Hawaii, etc.), or if you're trying to dodge customs (apparently lots of customs offices overlook SAL packages most of the time, so they're generally not taxed), then Gentei Kits is probably going to be better just for the option to use SAL.

Can't compare their packaging yet, however. I may be mistaken, but I think Gentei shipped my desert GM III wrapped in some packing paper in a box just bigger than the kit's box, This was with SAL, however, so I don't know what the packaging is like on the more expensive shipping options.

First or second would look cool.

So I'm doing some stuff with a tallgeese. I want to paint it, but I'm having trouble finding a paint job I like. I'm going to make it a short cape to go under the shoulder armor to about elbow or forearm length and give it the Graze Custom sword in lieu of its other weapons.

Amy suggestions for a paint job? I can post a couple of lineart I've done

Most of the bad rep the Unicorn gets is from the MG, which is what, a decade old at this point? Since then Bandai has gotten a lot better at smaller scale engineering, so it shouldn't be that surprising RG Unicorn is much improved. Especially since Unicorn turned out to be a golden goose, so you just know it got more budget than the original vKa did.

It's a shame that MG Unicorn 2.0 is probably not happening anytime soon though.
>>
>>6470313
Don't count your chickens just yet, we have the 200th MG coming up, plus the 1:1 Unicorn going up now
>>
>>6470318
Considering we have a RG, PG, Megasize and 1:1. The 1/100 scale is missing. It doesn't seem that unlikely.

How bad is the current MG anyway? Wanting to get myself a Unicorn and not sure if I should go MG, PG, or Mega Size.

Ideally I'd like a Megasize Unicorn Mode.
>>
>>6470323
The MG is alright, not the best posing kit, but far from the worst. The worst part of it really is how fiddly its transformation is. It's not a grenade, it just not very solid, like things don't click as well as they could
>>
>>6470272

so you know how to do it but your a lazy cunt. ok.
>>
>>6470323
>>6470334
The MG is easily the worst of all of them. If you transform it more than a few times the arm flaps will inevitably break off, they're just too thin. And the range of motion is next to none just because they didn't make enough concessions in Katoki's design to give it better joints, especially on the arms and legs.

Just a few changes that that the MG team could have done easily would have vastly improved it.
>>
>>6470318

And to think, it seemed like Bandai had finally finished milking the MG, PG, and HG Unicorns. What's next, a new HG Unicorn that partsforms between Unicorn and Destroy modes? A brand-new 1/72 scale line of Gunpla, spearheaded by a 1/72 Unicorn?

Highly unlikely since they've cranked out 2 solid kits of it since then (PG and RG) and that old ass kit is still one of their best sellers by far. Why crank out a new MG of a money printing machine when people still buy oodles of them?
That and we're 3 kits away from #200, if it was the Unicorn 2.0 they'd be advertising the shit out of it.

>>
>>6471170
>Never built or painted
For building I see people sometimes don't remove nubs correctly and painting I see people apply coats too thick.
>>
>>6471170
The best way to prepare is to accept you're probably gonna fuck something up, but that's OK
I'd recommend buying a nice cheap kit to practice on before building the thing you want to look good
>>
>>6471170
It'll probably take a little while to get a feel for how much thinner to use. Expect your first couple coats to be too thick or a runny mess.
>>
>>6471200
I'm prepared to fuck up. Just asking so I can have a better idea of what's going wrong so I can learn from it asap.

Where is the RX-78's chin?
>>
>>6471170
I don't know about others, but I'm just speaking from when I started out. You might not prime it properly so paint will chip, your masking won't go as well as you thought/realized you should've masked when painting small details, colors might not come out like you mixed/wanted, and you might thin too much/little. Those are off the top of my head from my first few kits.

Think of getting my first ever kit, but i'm stuck between choosing Age 3 Orbital or Fortress. I wanted to try my hand at customizing them to look like a super robot with the goal to kit bash the two. Which one would be good kit to start with for a beginner?
>>

HG AGE was really great as long as you stayed away from the earlier Vagan kits as I recall. If you have to pick one, go with Orbital: give that poor machine some love.
>>
>>6471035
Nothing, I think it'd be pretty neat. Bandai could either hit a sweet spot between MGs and PGs with size and details, or they could make them as cheaper Mega Sizes that still take up a lot of presence due to their sheer size. I'm just a bit tired (and a bit disgusted) at how easily the Unicorn prints money.
