For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

Frame Arms Group Build

This time the idea is to build any Frame Arms, or Frame Arms Girl kit, and paint and customize it.

The rules are overall pretty simple, the base must be recognizable as FA or FA Girl, other than that there's no limit on what you can do.

Due Date: September 1st

Note: This is a prize build, there will be a prize provided by me, there will also be a mystery prize provided by another anon. That means that to enter, I need WIP pictures submitted before the due date. Simply email me some pictures of you working on it, I don't care at what point, as long as it's possible to tell where your final product came from.

Prize Pack:
MSG Free Style Bazooka
MSG Impact Knuckle
MSG Beast Sword
MSG Assault Rifle #2
Miscellaneous supplies

I'm probably going to add more, but I'll let those be a secret.

Email: [email protected]

I'm also available via IRC and Steam.

God everyone is a fucking tranny anymore. And here I thought gunpla was the last holy bastion. Also, isn't the point of being a tranny to not let others know you are one to begin with?
>>
>>6434512
I don't know if everyone is but I'm sure as hell sick of them shitting up anything remotely "nerdy". I was in a Gunpla discord this week and they wanted to show people wearing their t-shirts for the facebook page. First submission was a dyed hair super obvious tranny.

Modeling as a hobby is going main stream and we're seeing it fill with undesirables, attention seekers and whores because of it. I fucking hate it.
>>
>>6434512

They are incredibly lonely people, who in the past would have a family or religious institutions to care for them, but today? Pantomiming as a woman is the only way to attract attention.

It's kind of like being in hell, but in real life.

Anyway. . .back to Chinese robots and painting.

They're fucked up kids who in the past would've been set straight by social pressure but now we indulge it. People have always been fucked up, society usually just set them straight because that's what society is for, collecting and conforming people into contributing members. It's all downhill from here boys, build like there's no tomorrow

Well, your options are either
1). Glue it (depending on how it's broken)
2). Buying the Skull Weapon booster as it actually comes with a pair of peace hands.
There might also bee some 3rd-party hands that are super poseable, but I'm not sure about some at the 1/144 scale since I've never looked into it.

I mean....shit. The old Z'Gok is actually a really good kit and there is a fair amount of new tooling here, but I can't help but wish there was a little more to change up its appearance than just those new forearms.

Somewhat related, I was sorta thinking the other day: if they do a Revive Z'Gok, what would they even improve? The old kit is pretty great already imo.
>>
>>6434745
Change the material used for the joints to the new plastic used by current hg kits, and a movable mono-eye
>>
>>6434388
yes, get one that has a big red "RE" on the box. those are the re-issue ones that have a sturdier frame but its still filled with shitty nubmarks. If you can find an architype frame get it so that you can snap it together yourself.
>>
I've never ordered pbandai kits before, how much do middlemen charge extra compared to how much japs and other asians pay?

I have a friend in Singapore I could ask to buy/ship to me some pbandai kits I'm interested in, but I don't want to bother them with a request like that unless middlemen really do increase the price like double or something.
>>
>>6434571
You should check out kotobukiya's evas
They have both anime and ova version
And the eva 02 with cloak is on the way.
The articulation on those are way better imo (even tho i havent built those yet)
>>
>>6434870
Middlemen are expensive and will probably result in a 40-50% extra for domestic shipping, bank fees, and international shipping for a total cost of 140-150% (100% being just the items, 40-50% being the extra shipping and shit). Domestic shipping is cheap, especially in Japan apparently. So you're probably paying like 40% more than them.
>>
>>6434876
They only charge for shipping costs? I was under the impression that they charged more to make a profit.

140-150% doesn't sound as bad as I expected though. Thanks anon.

Kotobukiya has their own range of supplementary weapons under their M.S.G. line long before Bandai did theirs, like this stupid-awesome motorized chainsaw.
>>
>>6435640
Unfortunately most of the cooler ones are too big and look awkward on most hg stuff. Even in your pic that's an MG.
>>
>>6435440
It's an old-style of jointing found on the G04 and G05 IIRC. But those had a reason for having that type of joint since they had arm cannons so you could position them out to the sides or on the underarm
>>
>>6435655
Oh no, I know the reason. But it's tends to make the joints somewhat loose

http://hlj.com/product/BAN950533
He comes with a few weapons (minigun, knife and pallet gun) and feels pretty good.

>>6434874
I'm planning to! I think I've preordered 02 with the cloak.
The articulation on this one is a mixed bag.
The head is barely able to move since it's connected to the body by two balljoints, the shoulders are also balljoints, and the arm is lacking, with just a hinge at the elbow.
He's a good size though. Stands a bit taller than an MG, so he's in scale with the 1/144s.
>>
Varnish question. Why does it feel like my lacquer gloss varnish never fully dries? It feels dry after a few days, but any firmer touch leaves finger prints. Could it be too humid for it to properly cure? Should O spray it again when it gets drier out?
>>
>>6435960
>lacquer gloss varnish
you are going to have to be more specific

what brand? how did you spray it?

lacquer gloss is typically cured within 2hrs
>>
>>6435719
You can just glue it or put plastic sheet over it

>>6435960
What did you put it over?
>>
>>6436015
Sorry about that. It's Alclad II Klear Kote gloss. The weather hasn't been kind in central Pa this summer, so I'm hoping that might be the case.

>>6436023
So far I've tested it on a custom Graze, Boba Fett, and Stormtrooper. I use Vallejo paint, and then the Alclad gloss after the paint dries. The Graze seemed to cure the best of the three. What's weird is that it seems like I leave finger prints on in, but I can wipe them away. It just feels.. not quite tacky, but not dry like bare plastic
>>
>>6436030
I haven't used alclad gloss yet, I have some somewhere just never got to it. Isn't it actually enamel? Or am I getting that confused with something else.

Anyway, not all paints might feel like plastics. That said it sounds like you might not have given the vallejo enough time to air out. Acrylic can take up to like a week to cure and air out sufficiently enough to put a solvent based paint over it safely. If the under layer of paint is still airing out it can slow or prevent the curing of the top layer, or worse, cause a reaction that dissolves one of the two or ruins the finish.

If you already let it dry for 5-7 days in a dry, moderate warm environment then I'd just try a different gloss. How wet you coated it will also affect it obviously, since the outer most of the paint will start curing first and the rest will gas out as the solvent vaporizes and escapes. Sometimes it might be good to do a few very light layers of gloss for adhesion before doing the wet layer for high gloss.
>>
>>6436030
>The weather hasn't been kind in central Pa this summer
That might be it. If weather's humid then your paint is going to get fucked up real easy. I'm in NJ and it's been unusually humid here too.
>>
>>6436030
Alclad klear coat gloss is enamel, not lacquer. It gets sticky and leaves fingerprints because your finger oils are reacting with it.
>>
>>6436053
It says lacquer on the bottle, tho. Alclad II Lacquer
>>
>>6436038
I figured it's from a mix of things. Could also explain why the Graze feels much drier than the other two. Also I didn't know I could put down thin layers of gloss first, I'll try that too if we ever get an actual dry day
>>
>>6436063
>Also I didn't know I could put down thin layers of gloss first, I'll try that too if we ever get an actual dry day
I would test it on scrap plastic first. You can certainly do it for opaque paints and I'm fairly certain there won't be any strange anomalies even with a clear coat but it can't hurt to be sure.
>>
>>6436058
Thats the brand name. Even their aqua gloss says "Lacquer" on it. If you don't believe me spray down a junk piece and try putting an enamel wash on it. I did that with a gm and the enamel ate right through the gloss coat and ruined the paint. When I used it with aqua gloss I didn't have that problem.

>SU-47's predominant color is flat black
How the fuck would I give it any weathering without it looking like shit? Should I just make it clean and leave it murder black all the way through?
>>
>>6436189

Bits of exposed steel color where the paint would scuff/scratch, maybe?
>>
>>6436199
A modern fighter really wouldn't have that kinda look, especially something that was just a prototype. Looking at pictures, it seems like it was really clean, since the flat black hides any staining that might show up around panel lines.

I guess the most I could do is add a tiny bit of gray or white to the flat black to lighten it a bit, like the paint's a little worn or something.

the common complain on the F91 is that it does not uses polycaps at all for the inner frame, which can result in joints being too tight at first or very loose later

the VSBRs are also a little fragile and require caution when building them, but that aside, it is a pretty damn good kit for its price
>>
>>6434571
>>6435876
Nice to see another enjoying the Bandai Eva HG kits! Just wanted to chime in with a heads up, to try and never leave the arms bent for long periods of time if you can. The rubber sheaths have an annoying habit of splitting just above the elbows. Also funnily enough the rubber material on the TV kits has outlasted the movie kits in my experience.

Also an outright warning to NEVER CONSIDER the PG Eva Unit-01 kit. Been seeing it pop up for as low as 3000-4000 yen on Mandarake recently, and I'm conflicted on even saying it's worth that for a custom project; using it's surprisingly robust inner frame. Avoid it, and I'd actually wanna request that if GG makes an avoid section in the guide; to consider putting that in there. It's frustrating, wastes materials, and could leave you with the worst impression on the PG line.
>>
Tips for spraying in FUCKING HOT weather? No signs of it dipping into anything lower than high 80's anytime soon.
>>
>>6436515
As long as the humidity isn't fucking awful you can spray.
>>
How do you dull coat really small intricate pieces like 1/44 face pieces? Just spray the whole head to get an even coat? Or spray each tiny piece?

never used this stuff before, i have the Testor's dull coat spray
>>
>>6436535
If it's just a top coat I would do the whole head. So long as the spray isn't too thick it should be fine.
>>
>>6436515
like the G Guy says, it's the humidity you have to worry about. if you got super high humidity, there ain't much you can do unless you happen to have a dehumidifier, or a decent central air conditioning combined with a spray booth if you decide to spray in the house itself.

It will dry properly if you don't spray super thick coat of it (and as long as you are not spraying vinyl - enamel NEVER dries on vinyl).

That said, Klear Kotes are inferior to lacquer based clears like Mr Super Clear.

Here is my berserk fuhrer, he ain't quite done yet, back weapons need some more work, like paint to cover up the notorious koto nub marks, as well as figuring out how to make the joint caps look right. Tried going with white to further accentuate the fifties turquise color I got going on but they didn't look right. Maybe if I make the body of the cap black and the top white like whitewall tires...

Anyway posted this despite incompleteness since some anon seemed interested to know what I was painting it.

Anon, I saw this amazing trick on a Korean video.
Try using MR. Metal primer to prepare the rubber and then paint it, it should work like a charm.

Getting back into Model Kits after around 15 years and I bought all these.
Got the Zaku just because it was super cheap and I wanted something to practice with.
Got the 3 RX-78-2's because I wanted to try out all the Gundam grades (other than Perfect because I'm not made of money) and I figured if I bought 3 different Gundams and never bought anymore, they would look out of place on display being different sizes and quality while 3 of the same would at least look nice together
And I got the Gourai's because the FAG anime was cute and I thought they'd look nice on display together.

Is there any specific model kits (gundam or otherwise) that are fun to build or look nice to display?
Also is there any cheap way of getting Zoids in the UK or am I stuck paying £30+ shipping and £10+ customs charge?

how new are you to eva?
a HG should be reaching up to her knee at best.
why buy this inaccurate version?
that's the rebuild painting on the tv frame.
cheap cash-in by bandai.

funny how the kotobukiya kit is better in every way except the body shape. they retooled their rebuild kit into some frankenstein monster.
I have both tv versions, and all things considered the old bandai kit wins by default by being more accurate. the kit you built takes a massive shit on accuracy however.

>>6437488
I watched the anime and the rebuilds but admittedly that was almost half a decade ago. I think the kit looks good.
Concerning the height issue, I do remember that it's all over the place in the anime so I remember them being around 50 meters tall.

Spending some time with it, the kit is very nice to look at but playing with it is a bitch.
As I mentioned before, the neck is poorly articulated, but that's not the real issue.
The shoulders can't move past maybe 60° vertically, and horizontal movement is only available through the ball joint.
Elbows can hinge about 45°.
The wrists are also awful to work with. The hands pop out so easily, it's impossible to hold a natural looking pose with the gatling gun, even the picture in the manual is awful.
Just find a nice pose with a weapon, make sure

Hey guys, new to gunpla. When you get a new kit, which parts do you typically paint? I'm considering getting this:
http://www.gundamkitscollection.com/2016/09/hg-1144-gundam-vidaru-tentative-name.html

And not sure what you'd normally paint on a kit like that. Maybe metallic paint for the weapons and other parts that would be metal on the real gundam? Any insight into this would be appreciated. Also, would that kit be good for a beginner?
>>
>>6438294
>what do you paint
everything
>>
>>6438295
If the kit is already colored, why? Does it improve the texture, do you want a different color from how it comes out of the box, do you just enjoy the process of painting it and the pride of ownership that comes along with it, ... some other reason? I'm sure there's a reason but I'm just not sure of it.

The best way you can make a kit look better as a beginner is panel lining, buy a fine tip marker and just race all the grooves once you are done building the model, even a small amount improves the way a model looks so much.

>>6437739
That exact eva kit was my first model ever (I bought it not knowing it was a model) so i'm super biased towards that line and think even the 90s LMHG eva's look good despite shit articulation, i'd recommend the mass produced Eva but it needs heaps of painting to look accurate.
>>
>>6438482
Is a marker or diluted paint better?
>>
>>6438487
If you were making a 1/100 MG or something i would recommend using diluted paint but personally a 1/144 HG is too small and finicky.
Besides as a beginner a marker would be better just so you can practice and find your way around how panel lining works
>>
Question about Mr Hobby paints

Loooooooong story short, I need to repaint an Astray from red to blue. The manual calls for Mr Hobby Cobalt Blue, but I'm wondering if either Mr Gundam Blue or Mr Gundam Zeta Blue would be decent alternatives. I can't really find color-accurate pictures online, but I know what the Blue Frame is supposed to look like
>>
>>6438532
I like the Gold Astray.
>>
>>6438541
I like the standard Astray design, but Bandai has been fucking retarded in how the handle the Astray, at least in the MG line. They should have released the Second L like they did, then release the standard Red Frame Astray as normal. The Red frame Kai should have been P-Bandai instead, and then they could have made a standard Astray but in blue as a P-Bandai, like how they did with the RGs. Hell they could have made all the colored frames, but for some ungodly reason they had to make the backpack and shield P-Bandai... WHY? We didn't need two tacti-cool arm normal releases!
>>
I've never built a master grade or anything but a 1/144 before. What are a few good ones to start with?
>>
>>6438565
There's a few recommended in the guide, but a good place to start is the Wing MG line, they're all pretty straightforward and fun.
>>

>Wing MG line
Get a Tallgeese. You'll also probably want to buy an Action Base so you can pose the incredibly unstable thing, but man do I love how it looks.
>>
>>6438563
As its been said before, at the time the red frame kai came out that was what it currently looked like in the manga and was what had the current most relevance, so they went with that. Also I wouldn't doubt that the fact that there was already a 1/100 NG out of the standard red frame factored into it.

Sucks that the standard took years to release and it was a p bandai though.

>>6438712
I'm not sure if this is satire or you're fucking with me but it has below-average sized feet and bulky super verniers on the back. While you can counterbalance this with the shield and gun and it is certainly capable of standing without support unlike some kits, it is definitely not a stable kit by any measure. I wouldn't say you HAVE to have an Action Base for it (there are definitely kits where an Action Base is mandatory, like the Psycho Zaku which is hopelessly back heavy) but it's one of the kits that definitely benefits from it.
That said I think almost every kit could benefit from an action base for the sake of dynamic posing, there's a lot more you can do when your kit isn't limited to what will keep it balanced on its feet.

A trick I learned with panel lining. Get an extra fine Sharpie (color depends on piece), and do your panels. I personally do any edges on raised pieces also. Then take an alcohol wipe, which you can buy at any cvs/Walgreens for $10 for 200 count, and wipe along the excess. It'll clean up any lining you have and leave a fine panel line. It also helps prep the piece for any decals, as it removes any oils on the plastic

I use tamiya spray cans, they just need to be used in warm conditions so maybe above 20 degrees Celsius to be safe, warm up the can if you wish (leave it sealed in a bucket of warm water don't do anything retarded like using a microwave etc) and shake up the can for a good solid 60 seconds or more, and when you spray use burst not just hold down the trigger, and keep parts/sections away at around 30cm.

Results may still vary but this seems to work for me

if you like matte, then you can use any paint or lack of paint that you prefer. You just have to use Matte/Flat clear coat, it's even a great way to get different surface texture to look the same. Say for example some parts were painted in flat paint, some in gloss, and some even not painted at all, they will all look the same texture wise with a few layers of a flat coat.

Or maybe one could try one of those cordless routers for better control (pic related)?

You cant achieve that effect by removing material. It's usually done with paint.

Of course you'd have to prime and paint the kit in order to get this effect before you use the router/dremel. Then you go along the edges where you want to add the "damage"; use a really light touch while using the tool on your kit and be careful to not drill a hole. I think the key to a good looking worn edge is, that you only remove the top layer of paint with the router so that the darker paint layers beneth are revealed.
Also, for the smoky sooty effect on a kit one could use ground chalk pastel sticks. That's what people from the resin doll hobby use for an airbrush-like effect.

Just make sure you spray a layer of flat
varnish first and make sure you got the pastel type that's not like crayons but the brittle, oil-free type. One'd need to seal the pastels with a topcoat to prevent wiping off the pastel's pigments afterwards.
>>
>>6440922
just to clarify, dont use a router or dremel for this. If your intent is to remove material, do that in the construction phase and add darker paint in the painting stage.

It's way too easy to fuck up with power tools.
>>
>>6440798
>removing material
>necessarily means dremel
paint is also a "material"
chipping effects are achieved by removing paint
ergo, you can weather by "removing material" (it doesn't mean you need a fucking dremel for it)

questions?

Turn A gundam ($35)
Sword impulse (42)
Exia (35)
Seven sword/G (45 - normally 90 amazon says)

Turn A is going to be fairly straightforward to build. I'd skip Exia for the floppy ankles. Seven Swords/G is super fun to build, and the base 00 is pretty damn solid.

MG Exia is in this weird phantom zone of technically being impressive (it was designed to be more articulate than damn near anything else at the time, had LEDs, and nails the original Exia look) but then rapidly falling behind as every subsequent high end Exia came out.

These days the Exia tends to be slimmer, which makes the bulk of the MG look awkward unless you go allin with Avalanche Exia. The engineering was impressive for its time, but It's since been surpassed; RG Exia can do just about anything the MG can, only it doesn't require you to glue the secondary ankle joints in place so the thing can stand. And of course, RG and MB Exia have a GN Sword that actually attaches properly instead of the catastrophic fuckup that is the MG Exia's arm connection.

You masked pegs and holes before you sprayed, right?
