For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

Frame Arms Group Build

This time the idea is to build any Frame Arms, or Frame Arms Girl kit, and paint and customize it.

The rules are overall pretty simple, the base must be recognizable as FA or FA Girl, other than that there's no limit on what you can do.

Due Date: September 1st

Note: This is a prize build, there will be a prize provided by me, there will also be a mystery prize provided by another anon. That means that to enter, I need WIP pictures submitted before the due date. Simply email me some pictures of you working on it, I don't care at what point, as long as it's possible to tell where your final product came from.

Prize Pack:
MSG Free Style Bazooka
MSG Impact Knuckle
MSG Beast Sword
MSG Assault Rifle #2
Miscellaneous supplies

I'm probably going to add more, but I'll let those be a secret.

Email: [email protected]

I'm also available via IRC and Steam.

iirc it started the double jointed elbows mechanic.
I haven't started mine but I'm just having a quick look through the parts - it has balljointed thighs, single joint knees, and no vertical movement in the shoulders.
It's not as bad as an old GM, for example, and better than the Alex/Tristan, but not as good as a modern kit.

HG if you're into detailing every tiny bit of that small model to make it look good

MG looks good without much detailing, but there certainly are a lots of spots you can detail to make it look even better, also more fragile, breakable than the simple HG.

go MG if you don't want to paint
go HG if you can do some detailing
go MG and make it looks like the metal build as example if you want challenge

30ish kits and I'm still shit at building Gunpla. Gouges on the plastic, and oversanding at points, let alone bad attempts at nub removal. Tried to be adventurous and panel lining this Nu, but my hands shook terribly, left me with lines thicker than Dalongs. Feel free to give advice or call me shit or whatever.

How are the HMM Zoids? I used to get a bunch of the old Zoid models when I was a kid and really liked them, though none survived my childhood since I didn't take good care of my things back then.
I see them go up every now and then and have been feeling nostalgic.
>>
>>6377268

I have only built one kit so far, the schneider liger, and it was a pretty good kit. You should have some glue as it might be needed in a spot or two.

The berserk fuhrer is in my backlog, but I haven't decided on a color scheme yet.
>>
>>6376789
personally i would prefer a chest plate that protrudes out more then that. And I don't mean outright boobplate either, I wonder if the FA chest plate will work on the FAGs.
>>
>>6377311
Ah, glue. Why is that? Just want to know all the details like that, in case I decide to get into the.
>>
>>6377331

It was required in one spot, recommended by the manual but not entirely necessary in several.
>>
>>6377268
which ones you looking at?

They all are good for the most part, to my knowledge there are really no outright bad ones. However the older ones like the command wolf do have some issues with engineering. for example the wolf's jaw opens only a little bit, so if you want it to look like he is trying to bite something then it will require some cutting in the head to give him more clearance for the jaw to open. He also lacks full articulation in the legs for some reason, and they like to fall off a lot due to the way they connect to the body.

That's another thing, limb articulation, especially where they connect to the body, is never ever consistent. They are always trying something different which is not necesarily a bad thing, just something I noticed.

There is also a bad habit of required multiple tiny parts that have to be carefully sandwiched between two big parts all at the same time. The ones that come in shiny metallic plastic can sometimes look ugly if a piece has an overly noticeable swirl of color in it, and tend to scar from nub removal a bit too easily.

But I still love these kits. Amazing amount of articulation outside of the issues on the command wolf and understandibly limited kits like a Cannon Tortoise(made up for with a ton of amusing gimmicks like tucking head into it's shell), overall an acceptable level of parts seperation for color (for some reason the buster tortoise variant suffers in this despite sharing those same parts with Cannon Tortoise), and a great deal of details on them. Newer HMM kits are easily comparable to older MGs with inner detailing that normally never is seen.

Also a great bonus is they have been redesigned here and there. Command wolf's default gun has a closed canopy that looks like some zoid head, Lightning Saix gains some hidden weapons that pop out and so on.

The chest is 3 heads long. It's the legs that are Katoki long, which is fitting since it's a GK of the Gundam ver. Ka. Also kids with microcephaly have a reduced cranium. The Gundam's eyes are right in the middle of the head so the face is normally proportioned.
>>
>>6377558
It was a joke, but thanks for the in depth explanation anyway.
>>
>>6377311
one thing that might help with your descisions is to consider wether or not you want the new variant of the fuhrer they are making, the Sturm Tyrann, and if you want to buy the entire new kit or just get the armor pack(assuming they make a seperate CAS pack like they did for the liger)

if getting a separate pack then got to consider how it may look in your choosen color

>>6377331
like he said some kits by Koto do actually require cement to be applied in a select areas. Usually they are small parts that they could not make fit together securely with just snap together alone for example the spread out claws on the lightning saix. However on some of them, again especially older kits, some areas that may not require glue by the manual could really use them, like armor pieces that may pop off because of the articulation.
>>
Where's a good place to get replacement sticker sheets? Apparently my Shining Gundam was supposed to have stickers and didn't come with them, which I didn't realize until very late in the process.
>>
>>6377584

Good point, I do like most of what I see on the sturm tyrann. I wonder how easy/troublesome it would be to switch out the armor, I'm always allergic to touching my painted kits after I put them in a decent pose.

Do we have an estimate of when it will get a release, or is that unknown at this point?
>>
>>6377096
You should have posted the previous photo for us to get the context.
>>
>>6377597
the only comparison we have for swapping parts would be the liger zero, and that is considered a pain in the arse by many that it is far better to just buy the separate kits. However the fuhrer is different from the liger in the sense that it appears to me it has more parts that could be more easily swapped like the blade weapon things on the back. It also appears to me from what little images we have of the prototype that the tail armor could potentailly be the same as the fuhrer's so may not need to be swapped out as long as same color and who knows if anything else is the same.

release date is as far as I know unknown at this time. I beleive the most we have to go on is that they had the uncolored portotype shown off at the previous wonder festival alongside the storm sworder. So next month when Summer Won Fes comes along keep an eye out for news on it. Either they give us release date info then or if there is a full color show piece then likely a few months after that it reveals the date. I suggest going to the reddit zoids page during that time, very hard to find specifically zoids stuff among all the other usual sources of WonFes news.

Personally I will likely be trying to see how he looks with both weapons on at the same time since the scissor shields are arm mounted while the default weapons are back mounted. Just waiting on my fuhrer to arrive of course.

Start with something cheap like a GM so if you fuck up massively it doesn't matter too much.

Tamiya spraycan for primer and gloss/flat coat, as well as metallics if you want to use any, or the entire kit if you don't want to try out handbrushing.
Vallejo model color and/or game color for handbrushing.
>>
>>6378642

Oh and use tamiya panel line accent (with lighter fluid for cleanup) for the panel lines instead of a marker. Just remember never to use it on bare plastic as it can make the plastic brittle.

What's the best sanding process? From high to low grit? I just want to learn how to properly denub without damaging the plastic like I have before!

Also, how are mechanical pencils for panel lining? I know they are suggested in the guide, I just get hand tremors which makes the pens I use sloppy.
>>
>>6378793
I start at 600 grit, rub gentle in circular pattern, clean the dust, move to 800, 1000, then 2000
>>
>>6378793
It's actually low to high (that is, coarse to fine). I like to shave down as much of the nub as possible with a hobby knife before I start sanding so I don't round off too many edges/remove detail as I'm wont to do. As for grits, I'm the same as >>6378804 but with more dust cleaning in between and a polish at the end if I'm doing a gloss coat.

With sanding, I go coarse, fine, and then extra fine while wet sanding and wiping away the excess as I go. As for mechanical pencil, it's great and one of my favorite methods of lining on heavily white kits.
>>

I thought the dust cleaning was implied. Hmm. But yes, I dust between grits too

I finally started building a backlogged kit (Thunderbolt Gundam) that I had saved for six months, and I immediately lost the bit that covers the v-fin (arguably one of the most important parts imo) and I'm having a hard time motivating myself to finish it now. ESPECIALLY with the absurd amount of stickers.

Also, as someone who hasn't frequented these threads since IBO s1 ended, have there been any cool new kits? Revives and such?

Also, I saw the Gerbera Tetra HG at a con, is that new? I didn't know it had a kit.

Just got done snapping the new HGUC Zeta. It's a pretty nice kit. The pseudo inner frame is nice and the articulation is pretty good. Better than most HGs. The shoulders in particular are MG levels of articulated. There were some issues though. The wing binders however are kinda lacking. They only move really in one direction and you can't change the angle of them reletive to the rest of the MS. The red parts on the wings are stickers and honestly it's not really acceptable. With the detail on the rest of the kit there is no reason they shouldn't have been separate red peices. I'm gonna have to strip the stickers off and paint them. I haven't transformed it yet so we'll see how well that works.

dont use ammonia because aerosol ammonia will kill you and it doesnt really act as a solvent in that it just breaks down acrylic paint instead of dissolving it.

>>
>>6379865
They're nice for attaching small parts to things, and for applying small stickers.

They're not as useful for gunpla since they're mostly snap-fit, and tweezers don't really have the grip to push the parts in.

They're great for scale modelling, when attaching things such as handlebars, as you really only need to hold it in place while waiting for the cement to do its work.

they are mostly right though, they are not absolutely necessary, they can be helpful sure, but a good sharp knife and sanding sticks/paper can do you just fine for the most part. But to answer the question I don't really use any super fine grit files, sanding sticks do that job for me just fine, I just use the basic needle files you can get at any hobby shop. And I definitely don't use any flat files.

>>6379625
>>6379630
>>6379632
however I should point out that I highly recommend getting a decent little set of needle files. They are great for sanding down pegs, especially on joints that are hiding behind a lot of other plastic.
>>
>>6379707
have kits but no ideas. I like my frame arms as is, and fags are great oob too.
>>
What is the fastest/easiest way to make a ball joint like the ones used for HG hands significantly bigger? Just endless layers of clear coat?
>>
>>6380041
pretty much, the future pledge stuff tends to be most recommended for such purposes. Another option is super glue but that tends to produce uneven results, however I think the result can be much thicker with each application. I still prefer the pledge with future method.
>>
>>6380043

Don't have that stuff here, I also read that you could use plastic cement since it's essentially liquid plastic and does add volume so I might do that instead. Though I think it will take a lot of coats, but at least I can brush it on.
>>
>>6380048
you might just be better off with the super glue in that case. I would be shocked if you don't have SOME kind of super glue type of glue where you live. I would worry with the constant reapplication of cement potentially causing some deformities and even warping from the repetitive melting of the plastic. Sure I admit I might be getting over paranoid and the risk is retardedly low, but the gains you would theoretically get from each applicatin would in my mind be far too little to be worth the trouble as well.
>>
>>6380055

I meant no future pledge stuff, sorry.
>>
>>6380048
Future pledge is pretty much clear acrylic paint, so use that

As for plastic cement, look at the label before you use it. Tamiya extra thin is pure solvent while thicker cement have like 10% styrene dissolved.
>>
>>6380058
I knew you most likely just meant the pledge stuff, but you never know with different countries.

Although now that I think about it, you positive you don't have the pledge? They no longer have 'Pledge with Future' on the bottle anywhere so it took me a while to find it because I was going off old information. Now called Pledge Floor Care Multi Surface Finish. Did you check and see if you could potentially even get it off online for a decent price? The stuff will last you a really long time compared to other stuff so factor that into the price.
>>
>>6380041
Clear nail polish. Dry fast, so you can do a coat every 20/30 seconds, significantly thicker than pledge and the like, and unlike glue has no chance of fucking up your model.
>>

Hi gunpla general!
I need help.
I want to repaint some transformers toys.
I understand that acrylic scrapes easily.
Would tamiya enamel be better?
The toy should be playable and able to withstand transformation.

Also, tamiya enamels at shops have the oil separated with the pigments solid at the bottom of the bottle.
How should I remix this?

Thanks guys!
>>
>>6380291
If you play with it a lot the paint is probably gonna scrape off regardless, however yes enamel is stronger and using primer and topcoat will help too
You can get a specific paint mixer but you can also just shake the hell out of it
>>
>>6380319
Thanks man.
I bought some tamiya enamel and the pigments are literally solid. No amount of shaking works
>>
>>6380291
Acrylics could work but they need much longer to cure.
Drying time ≠ Cure time.
Properly cured acrylic should be more or less the as scratch resistant as enamel on a primed surface.
Getting enamels is perhaps easier in any case, but mind the solvents if you're airbrushing.
As far as remixing them, just take bit of plastic or metal and stir hard. If they're totally separated, putting some solvent and mixing again could work it out, but the paint might simply have been past it's shelf-life.

it should also be mentioned that just because spray cans are already thinned, does not mean you are immune to THIN YOUR PAINTS. Just means you have to keep the layers you spray thin and not keep spraying one big heavy layer that goops up.

>>6380373
Designing runner layout around undergating is supposed to be a massive pain in the ass and adds to development costs.

Bruh I'm over 75 kits in and still do this shit. Don't worry too much, but if you're trying to make super nice display pieces definitely take your time. Sounds like you're getting frustrated at yourself, I do the same. Take a breather, and be careful. It's okay to take a long time on a kit if you want it coming out great. Get some cheap First Grades or High Grades to test out panel lining and painting on. It's all skills, you have to learn and cultivate them, nobody starts out great.
>>
>>6377222
>Gouges on the plastic
Unless it's really bad, you can apply pressure to the area with a fingernail to at the very least reduce the stress marks causing a gouge creates. The gouge will still be there, but it shouldn't be noticeable unless you're looking for it and you're up close.

And no one that sees that model is going to do that but you.

Some parts may need to be painted already built to seal the union lines, specially with HGs.

It's better to see how the pieces go together before you paint so you know what might get covered up or what might be possible problem areas.

Be warned that a lot of kits these days can have really tight fits though; you may want to trim some pegs to make disassembly easier. This goes triple for third party kits.

I assume that means you paint polycaps too. What about cases where you have a different piece sandwiched between the halves you want to seam weld, and it's articulated and/or supposed to be a different color?

Any way to get scratches out of plastic without stripping paint off? I put down some masking tape but the paint somehow got under it and went all over the shoulder, so I scraped the paint off with a knife but it left huge gashes

What in the hell are you doing? Use thinner next time to clean it up, not a knife.

You're probably better off smoothing it over with putty to be honest.

Standard dry time for most paints is an hour (lacquers are nigh-instant).
If you want to put a different chemical-base paint or topcoat, Mr Aqueous Colors are acrylic, right? You're looking at about a week waiting for the paint to chemically "cure" so it fully does all it's bonding and doesn't potentially fuck up whatever you put on top of it.

Sand it a bit, use better masking tape?

Mechnical pencils work fine, you'll probably wanna topcoat if you use them though. Also, I have hand tremors too, you just keep a q-tip handy and swab away any excess ink. The ink comes off really easily and can even be rubbed away with a fingertip. It's pretty simple.

What do you guys think the chances are that we'll get a Revive Hazel anytime soon? I'm thinking about buying the old one but wonder if I should wait and see if a new one is on the horizon.
>>
>>6383223
We're far more likely to get an actual Woundwort kit then a revive Hazel. Plus the old one isn't awful anyways.
>>
>>6383223
Don't hold your breath. Bandai doesn't do much AoZ kits, and this one is relatively recent. It's not a bad kit either, so I'd say you can safely go ahead and get it.
>>
>>6383223
Not any time within the next decade. Bandai hasn't been interested in AoZ stuff for a while. They're even getting ignored in the RE100 line.

Assuming I ever made the laughable choice of buying the overpriced LED Unit for PG Unicorn, will it be better to install it WHILE I build the model or is it easy enough to put in after it's already done? How much of the model would I have to take apart to put in the LED Unit after the fact?

The entire thing. The manual has tons of "if you have the LEDs, you should put them in right now" steps.

If you have a small bowl push the marker into it until the tip pushes into the marker, this will release the paint.

just buy the chinese knockoff LED kit there's literally no difference, well one difference, the chinese knockoff lets you use the LED's via USB cable or by batteries, so it's actually better

The knockoff LEDs are noticeably dimmer, and also a little more frustrating to wire.

You get what you pay for.
>>
>>6384125
>I haven't actually compared these two things, but I'm going to tell you what I think anyways.

Both DM and Daban's LED units are noticeably worse than Bandai's, and harder to wire to boot thanks to the dumb gimmicks they added. This doesn't justify the ridiculous price of Bandai's, but you sure as can't say "there's literally no difference".

You're better off just wiring the thing yourself.
>>
>>6384212
>>6384200
I didnt know it was dimmer but it isnt that hard to wire
>>
>>6384200
>so bright it makes your model look like a cheap chinese christmas ornament

I don't know about this
>>
>>6384219
DM has four wires between each LED compared to Bandai and Daban's two, so that one is absolutely more annoying to work with.

As for Daban's, it's just lower quality in general. Not a massive hurdle or anything, but still annoying.

Anyone know any japanese proxies that will ship paint to the states?

Most of them either do only ems (no go) or if they do SAL they say no anyway...
>>
>>6384014
Start with stuff like foam core and styrene sheets to build simple buildings. Go to your local hobby or arts and crafts shop and pick up some materials, then look up model train/tank diorama tutorials on YouTube. Just experiment for a while, don't be concerned with producing a polished product. You'll be more free and less worried about the outcome that way.
>>
>>6384228
It needs to be about that bright for the gimmick to really work for Unicorn mode. You can also adjust the background light to make it not stand out as much if it really bothers you.

Personally, with LEDs the brighter the better.

Speak of the devil, Bandai has just announced a p-bandai MG 1/100 Hazel Kai that uses the Mk-II v2 inner frame. This is a weird case of a p-bandai with a completely original external.

It may also be Bandai's response to the chinese 1/100 Hazel Kai released a while ago.
>>
>>6385115
Argh, please do GM Quel and Barzam Kai next.

I hear the RG GP-01 falls apart if you breathe on it, so if I don't care whatsoever about the core fighter gimmick is it possible to make it into a secure figure with some glue or something? I'm not exactly sure how the three pieces connect together but I'm looking for a way to make it stable without ruining any of the poseability.

>>
>>6385115
Wasn't there an old MG Hazel from forever ago? I remember seeing parts for a 1/100 Hazel on Mandarake before.
>>
>>6385147
Yes. The most flimsy thing about it is simply how the top of the torso locks into the corefighter IMO. I have Fb and really it isn't that bad, but if I glued it together it'd have literally no problems.
>>
>>6385350
That was a resin conversion kit, there aren't any MG AoZ regular releases.
>>
>>6385127

>>
>>6385378
It's the Amatsu Mina Gold Frame Astray. I think the RG which is on AmiAmi already.
>>
On the subject of P-Bandai MGs, why the fuck is the regular Red Frame Astray a P-Bandai?
>>
>>6385402
Bandai works in mysterious ways.
>>
>>6385115
I think they might be planning to go the Pale Rider route: create a bunch of new molds now, and then reuse them as much as possibly by releasing all the variants as future P-Bandai releases over time.

It makes sense in theory (minimize the risk of releasing for a niche series and maximize the amount of use so the runner molds aren't wasted), but I wish they'd at least make the basic version general release.
>>
>>6385402
Because the only difference between it and the general release MG Red Frame Custom is a new backpack, a beam rifle, and a shield. They probably assumed that most people wouldn't be interested in buying a version with less accessories.

>But why did they release MG Red Frame Custom first?
Because they released MG Blue Frame 2nd L first, and the Red Frame Custom was a relatively easy mod from there.

>But why did they release MG Blue Frame 2nd L first?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
>>
>>6385378
>>6385384
It's on the P-Bandai page, so it must be some variant of it. I would assume the original Gold Frame Amatsu.
>>
>>6385443
IIRC the Vs Astray manga was running at the time and Red Frame custom had just been introduced in the manga
>>
>>6385443
>>6385402
It was all because of the timing of the mg releases. At the point that they made them, those were the forms being prominently featured in the manga, and then years later they went back to make the originals bit the original forms aren't as relevant or heavily promoted anymore so they ended up P-Bandai.

BANDAI BTFO HOW WILL THEY EVER RECOVER?
>>
>>6385553
By announcing a p-bandai mg advanced hazel within a week of mg hazel being released.
>>
>>6385553
I don't understand the logic behind these kinds of posts. Why would Bandai even care? Why should I care? At the end of the day we all know Bandai's releasing an objectively better product, it's only the price tag that people have a problem with.

And really, considering Magic Toys was completely silent about their Advanced Hazel until now, it's more likely that they're the ones who panicked.
>>
>>6386044
I can't say p-bandai are objectively better kits, when many of them are pretty lazy in quality Just look at some of the parts on them many of them are easily hollow or mass number of stickers. Now if it was Retail it would definitely be better.
>>
>>6386064
I would agree (P-Bandai Banshee Norn was fucking awful), but at the same time the plastic quality is still miles better, gimmicks are all incorporated in some fashion, and they usually provide some nice waterslides.

Being able to safely disassemble kits for painting is one of those things you don't realize how important it is until it's gone.
