For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

***Non-Gundam Group Build***

So this is pretty straightforward, build something that isn't Gundam. I literally do not care what it is, if it's not Gundam it counts (and just to get this out of the way, Bandai is fine). I do not require full paint jobs this time either, as I know the vast majority of people here build Bandai and that's it.

This is also not a prize build, but a regular group build.

>Dazzle camouflage, also known as razzle dazzle (US) or dazzle painting, was a family of ship camouflage used extensively in World War I, and to a lesser extent in World War II and afterwards. Credited to the British marine artist Norman Wilkinson, though with a rejected prior claim by the zoologist John Graham Kerr, it consisted of complex patterns of geometric shapes in contrasting colours, interrupting and intersecting each other.

Cool idea, but I can't imagine any sort of useful application on an MS. Distant ships are relatively slow-moving to the eye, so dazzle camo was meant to confuse the enemies as to their heading, so they would set up to attack in the wrong direction. But Mobile Suits are quick-moving, and humanoid. The camo wouldn't help confuse enemies in any meaningful way.

I mean, not that everything in Gundam has to (or does) make logical sense. I'm just saying.

As a GMfag it's good to finally see Jims getting a lot of releases after years of Zakus. Hell, Bandai's official website has pretty much declared 2017 the year of the GM with this page: http://bandai-hobby.net/brand/gm2017/. Sure a lot of them are P-Bandai, but there's always a catch, isn't there?

So if graze = zaku, then what = gouf? The reginlaze or maybe the geirail?

Are there any other parallels?
>>
>>6171846
The Graze is more like the Leo.
>>
>>6171850
Maybe, but I've always the graze and all the different variants as the ibo version of the zaku II and all the zaku I and II variants. There's a million different zakus and a million different graze, and they're both the one eyed lovable mass produced and highly customizable trooper of the enemy faction.

I haven't watched season of ibo so i don't know anything concrete about the season 2 ibo frames so i can't really say for sure if there are any other parallels to draw.
>>
>>6171859
I'd say Graze and Zaku are closer to.
Base units are both green, monoeyed axe using suits, both with a commander unit having a head fin. Then you get all the said variants too.

Either way, Graze and Zaku are both some of the nicest grunt designs.
>>
>>6171861
I agree, although leos are pretty great too.
>>
>>6171548
Could be a bit of both. I'm actually very much prefering to have a floppy kit now as painting tightens up joints and parts so much a well engineered kit takes a crap ton more steps to get it to good without fear of breaking. Also

Finally did my first seam welding on a Gyancelot, now I need to paint for the first time too. I was thinking of making it look like armor. Anyone have good tips for making a semi-polished steel and gold combo? And I suppose some kind of royal purple or navy blue for the colored bits.
>>
>>6171676
As far as I know, the only halfway-decent kit on the market is that SD Gunbuster Kotobukiya did a few years back. Gun/Diebuster doesn't seem to be very popular with GK makers for whatever reason, and most model kit makers ignore any Gainax property that isn't Evangelion.

Negativity towards the kit or the Moonlight Butterfly effect part specifically? Because the kit itself is one of my favorite MGs.

Here's how this nerd is going, finishing up the decal phase. I think the effect parts came out looking nice, I haven't done those before.

I had to completely repaint the blue after the chest broke again. It was already weakened from a break during the initial build, because I didn't realize how hard the chest grips on both sides, so it snapped on the very thin piece in the center. There are 3 rails holding it to the chest, and they grip pretty hard.

I would definitely recommend being extra careful removing this piece even on an oob build of the kit. The back piece of the chest is very structurally fragile also.

In this case it wasn't even that I couldn't separate it normally, it's just the way the piece is held on two sides at once, so if one side starts pulling faster than the other it's easy to break.

So there's this like jumbo almost Master Grade-esque SD called the Shin Goka Ryuso Ryubi Gundam, and it's the lead of the SD Gundam Sangokuden - Brave Battle Warriors series where the MS designs represent Romance of the Three Kingdoms characters

So in that series when the characters talk their little Gundam mouthplates move up and down, and this kit has a system with a lever on the back of the head so you can make it look like it's talking in the show

It's a silly gimmick and I love it

For real, makes buying normal figures fucking awful. The scalper aftermarket isn't as bad either thanks to most standard release stuff getting reprints/2.0s etc.
>>
>>6174875
This. Getting into HMMs has made me a very poor man indeed. I will say, the detail level is absurd though...whereas I might spend a couple of days on a MG, Zoids are a goddamn extended project while I detail all the little bits and bobs. They tend to be more complicated builds too, with lots of little fiddly bits. I guess in terms of build time and parts count I am sorta getting my money's worth.

>>6174891
>>6174899
Yup! Dropping expensive figures out of my budget (for the most part anyway) and returning to Gunpla makes me feel rich. You just get more for your dollar nowadays with Gunpla, especially with SHF, Figma, etc. getting pricier and pricier.
>>
>>6174899

the funny thing is I started to see it as what GOOD deal figs were after painting awhile. They really are impressive work.
>>
Has anyone ever considered recasting and selling the eye piece from LegendBB kits? It always annoys the hell out of me how I need to choose just two of the four eye stickers.
>>
>>6174907
Have you ever considered recasting it yourself?
>>
>>6174907

m8 you just cut the stickers out on the backing and then tape them back to back like an O then you can switch them out because they aren't stuck to anything

It's like SD 101
>>
>>6174910
Too late homeboy. All of mine are already stickered, I wouldn't want to fuck around with moldmaking with those on. Also, I have zero experience with moldmaking or casting and would probably fuck it all up.

This is more of a request for anyone with said experience, so I can throw my money at them and get it done right.
>>
>>6174916
Uh, wait, what? How do you get it to stay in place with no adhesive side then? Do you just caaarefully reassemble the head hoping the stickers don't move out of place?

instead of sticking them on like this guy, you just cut them out with the backs on, then put two small pieces of masking tape facing OUTWARDS along the pointy edges of the blue piece, then you lay the eye down like you were sticking it, so it makes an O with a set of eyes on each side that perfectly fits around it, and you can slide it off when you take the part out.
>>
>>6174905
Painting certainly does give you an appreciation for getting a nice figure with good paint apps right out of the box. Cleaning nubs has made very conscious of little molding marks or plastic imperfections though.

>>6174904
Yeah, they're pretty much PG kits. I'm hoping some reprints or new kits get announced soon, aftermarket is getting crazy for older stuff and we've got nothing but the really huge expensive kits lately. As much as I love them, its hard to justify several hundred bucks for a gojulas ._.

>>
>>6174905
A lot of figs have little to no paint. Just look at the regular Robot Damashii line. Most of them are 90% raw plastic and it looks pretty bad.

Figmas and SHFs usually get a little paint and a decal or two (like the eyes and maybe some sort of badge/icon depending on the figure) but nothing fantastic. They're also like $60-70 on average now.

And they're also 1/12 scale whereas MGs are in the same size range as 1/6 scale, which are typically even more expensive.
>>
>>6174921
What he's saying is, you make a round band, like a rubber hand, with masking tape and then stick the stickers onto the masking tape. Then you just slide the band on and off for the eyes you want.

Don't be afraid of em. I'm not a skilled modeler by any means and I just finished two HMMs. There wasn't anything too different from building a MG, just sometimes it's a little more intricate with smaller pieces. There is also a LOT of sculpted detail if you're into painting or panel lining. Take it slow and steady, you'll be fine. Also, just letting you know...for some reason the plastic seems to scar more easily than Bandai kits. Maybe due to the plastic mix they're using.

Not sure if it's really a gimmick but I was quite impressed with some of the moving part inner frames on RGs. Then again I find it impressive when I get a runner that has a varied mix of colours and types of plastic on.

It looks pretty good as a straight build, but you definitely want to panel line it at least. It really makes some of the little details (like the holes in the ankle guards for instance) pop out.

IIRC, the only things that you really need to paint for screen accuracy are the green stripe on the horn, and the yellow top and backs of the knee armor. Oh, and I guess the inside of the mouth if you want it to be red in there instead of...lavender. Everything else is either molded in the right color or prepainted. It's really not too bad and not very difficult.

I gotta admit these things are kind of cute, and the prepainted parts are nice. But boy oh boy do they feel like a shit value. They're also surprisingly pricey for how incredibly tiny they are. When I had finished my first one (Godos) I was dumbstruck that a box the size of a standard high grade Gundam had birthed this tiny little thing. It was also a nerve-wracking build due to how small some of the pieces were.

....actually, looking at it again, it is quite cute. Okay, maybe I do kinda like it.

Pretty much any IBO kit would be fine. As long as your fine with making a few mistakes since it's your first time. If you've read the guide you should be good to go. Have fun

>>
>>6175102

>>
>>6176273
I don't really paint much so, I'll differ to other anons advice/the guide. There are tons of videos and stuff that can walk you through it. Most people swear by Tamiya. I mostly just straight build and paint if it just looks like absolute shit otherwise(MG Shining Gundam's gold plating). I use Gundam markers for panel lines cause I'm a lazy fuck, panel wash looks better. Testors dullcote for top coating, it's cheap and easy to find at local hobby stores. Obviously Mr Hobby is probably better but shit gets expensive.

This is another decent guide you might want to check out. Covers pretty much everything.

>>
>>6176379
Gourai is by far the worst in terms of quality, even if I really do like her design. She has polycap balljoint hands that don't support weight very well, extremely tight joints that can crack (Sand the pegs down a bit, and be double sure to mask them off if you paint or they will crack), her skirt is immovable and impedes leg articulation, and the left hip pops off easily due to a molding issue that later FAGs addressed, and for all purposes only comes with one expression.

Looks nice painted up though and I'm unsure if the Little armory version addressed any of the issues.

Lol is that from Market Village?
Anyways trust me just shop online if you are in toronto. Every store that sells gunpla in toronto basically charge MSRP+Shipping costs+their markup. Then theres the 13% tax.

Anyone else here twist out the polycaps? A few friends cut them out like normal peices but I've never felt the need to cut them out, twisting them leaves nothing behind.
>>
Hey guys, amazon says that the gunpla I ordered ships to [my country] in the product description at the top of the page, but then down the bottom it says that they do not ship internationally. Which is correct? Will I get my gunpla??
>>
>>6177195
Looks like you need to spray closer
>>
>>6177001
It'd be better to apply cement between the snapped parts and then smear the putty across the length of the fin, giving it reinforcement in two axes
>>
>>6176575
What? Are you sure? I can't find any evidence of most of these. You sure you're not talking about the HMM line? Cause we're talking about MSS here buddy, totally different line (see >>6175731 for comparison between an HMM and MSS).
>>
>>6177253
Yeah I twist all my polycaps. Bandai plastic is so good nowadays that polycaps pretty much always twist off clean. It's different with other companies or ancient Bandai kits though...sometimes twisting off a polycap will leave behind this horrible shorn plastic tail. With those I clip.
>>
>>6177287
Hmm. I'll try that if this doesn't work. I already did one go with just plastic cement. Let that dry, then put some putty over like in the picture to fill in some gaps that were from my first attempt that failed.
>>
Cutting it flush, not cutting it flush and trimming it with a hobby knife, other esoteric ways - is there something I am missing, or will Titans navy blue plastic leave stress and nub marks irregardless of how it is cut? Makes me want to keep my MG boxed up, after completing the sub-par SD, and the overly complicated RG of the Mk. II.
>>
>>6177482
Darker plastic in general is REALLY bad about stress marks. But one thing you can do scratch it with your fingernail, as dumb as it sounds it works. The other option is to trim the nub down really close and then sand the pieces.
>>
Why is astray red frame so popular? Is it just because it's a red mech with a Katana?
>>
>>6177485
I've used an emery board, but not much luck with that. I suppose I'll have to bust out the sandpaper as a last resort if I get to building the MG. I'll try the nail bit as well, thank you.

>>
>>6176273
If you're going to topcoat it and the plastic is light-colored (as it is on the Lupus), a mechanical pencil will work perfectly well for panel-lining. It's also really easy to remove (just lick your finger/wet a napkin and wipe), so while you've gotta topcoat it to keep it there, it's very beginner-friendly. A matte or satin topcoat is usually enough to make a panel-lined but otherwise unpainted kit look presentable.
>>
So I'd like to give candy-coating a shot. All the guides say that Alclad is the way to go, but I've mostly been using acrylics up to this point and I'd rather not have to get thinners/cleaning supplies for a new type of paint if I don't have to. Does Tamiya Chrome Silver tend to look alright on top of gloss black?
>>
>>6177777
Congrats on your quints
>>
>>6177777

you better make sure your silver will not get disrupted by the clear, that's one of the major considerations

7-11 is probably more popular in Japan than in the US. In America 7-11 went bankrupt in the 90s, and was basically bought by Japanese 7-11 (even though it was originally from the US).

Also in Japan most of the food at 7-11 is pretty good. Whereas American 7-11 has donuts and hotdogs that've been sitting around for days, the Japanese 7-11 has all kinds of food and it's restocked a few times a day.
>>
>>6178110
Boy is that an understatement. 7-11 is MASSIVELY more popular there than it is here and does everything on up through banking.

I could eat better at 7-11s in japan than I can at most fast food restaurants in the US, and for less money.

I love 7-11, lawsons, and family mart so much.
>>
>>6178117
>I could eat better at 7-11s in japan than I can at most fast food restaurants in the US, and for less money.

7/11 food in Japan tasted pretty great. I know if I did the same back home with similar shops, the food would be dodgy, old or just plain disgusting.

Those are how to apply dry rub decals. Cut out the decal, tape it facedown to where you want it, and rub it with a coin or a pencil or something until it comes off.

How legit are these guys? I know they're selling bootlegs, but are they gonna steal my card info/take the money and not ship anything?
>>
>>6178453
Really? Well fuck. I didn't that I'd have to take such drastic action.
>>
>>6178522
It's not really drastic, it's just the smartest way to do things. Sanding is really laborious and you risk losing detail or making crisp edges turn mushy. It's not too hard, soak it in something like Simple Green (the guide in OP post probably has suggestions for other products) then give it some light scrubbing with a toothbrush or something.

If the part(s) in question are small and there's not a ton of paint to strip, I might suggest Mr. Paint Remover. It's kinda pricey but it works really fast and really well.
>>
>>6178493
>See some cool bootlegs
>Interested in getting in some practice/picking up desirable kits on the cheap
>When shipping to the US is added it costs almost as much as the legit kit
Well fuck that. I'm not gonna deal with poor parts fit and inferior plastic for a piddly savings of $10-20. Might as well just buy Bandai at that rate.

adding to the list of that anon, RG Zaku II is still one of my fav HG sized kit. Not as fragile as most have warned me about, simple fix as lightly gluing the skirt plating to the inner frame is super simple to do and solves the entire issue. Looks great out of the box and with just panel lining, didn't even put on the stickers.

Also, out of the blue, I know G-Reco is almost universally hated but I love the HG Gastima.

HG Grimoire. It is one of the most goddamn pleasant things you will ever build and it is 10/10 for aesthetics.

As the others have said, pretty much anything from IBO, Revive, or The Origin is great. I also have great love for the Zaku 1 Sniper and Kampfer, even though they're slightly older kits. They're still great! Give em a chance!
