The first thread I made a while back was to perhaps have an alternative from the usual pointless circle jerking. It's not a big hobby so I never understood the point of squabbling over little or petty shit.
There's the occasional "what do other people think of your hobby" threads which would lend one to think there's a certain feeling of alienation, but then you come to were like-minded folks are and all of a sudden you wanna be an asshole.
It's ridiculous, and yes derailing a thread to point out a typo and making this much of a hissy fit about it makes you look autistic. You can't deny that.
We collect toys. Toys are supposed to be fun. If you wanna have a productive and fun exchange with someone who shares your interests I'm all for it, otherwise I'm hiding your posts and you can talk to a wall for all I care.
>>6170710

I'm quite sure he post-processes his photos, which would easily take care of white balance issues.
He's a cool dude and takes funny and inventive shots, but they're all WAY blown out. He should really either move his lights a little further out, turn the intensity of them down, or adjust his shutter speed/aperture to compensate...he's losing a lot of detail in the lights (look at how Mach just melts into the background) and everything has this hyper-bright glowing look that makes me want to squint.

Canon A590is - I paid 25 for mine on eBay, but since it's an older model beware of dead pixels. I've had to color-correct alot of my shots lately since the white balancing on my camera is starting to give everything a greenish tint, but it's either that or have everything more orange. It also doesn't help that the LCD isn't great.
>>6171470
Thanks - I'll take that into consideration, it's really been hit-or-miss with white figures. I've been using foil as a reflector lately though and it's turned out much better
>>6171528
This is better, but it's still getting a little blown out (check out both of their chestplates and the boxer's helmet, melting into the bg again). To be fair though, this is a particularly tough one--white figures on white BG, plus Stormies are very high contrast with their B&W color scheme. Overall I'd suggest turning down your lights even more, or upping your shutter speed a tad. Remember, you can brighten up a slightly-too-dark photo in PS, but if you blow it out with too much light, you lose that detail in the brights forever and can't bring it back. Same goes for taking photos too dark (the blacks get crushed, detail gets lost again). This is pretty funny, cause 90% of the time photos here are suffering from lack of adequate lighting. This is one of the first times I've ever advised LESS light.
Anyway, good on you for taking criticism well though. Keep on going man, your photos always make me smile.

>>6171619
It's desaturated except for a single color. It's pretty easy, just select all of the color you want to keep and invert it (or just select everything else, whichever is easier), and hit desaturate. I just did it to this photo of Revo Iron Man.

I'm assuming it was you with the white balancing issues? I can't be sure it looks like the post was removed.
Try shooting with sunlight by a window or something or adjusting your tungsten levels. Otherwise you're stuck having to post edit which again is no big deal. Nowhere else but in toy photography are people so adverse to digital correction unless they've been shooting on film. If your camera is diving you trouble I'd hate to say it but it may be time to replace it. I got mine for about $200.

This is....a really interesting photo. Viewed at 100%, no one part of it seems to be super crisply in focus...it appears to be slightly blurry (as if by slight hand shaking) plus sort of noisy/grainy. I oddly kinda like that though. It gives it sort of a cinematic feel.
Also, you lit Bats beautifully, and the pose is great. Overall I fucking love this photo.
>>6171842
Thanks!
I'm glad you mentioned the cinematic vibe, it's what I usually shoot for in post.

Haven't fiddled with Prisma in a long time but I like how this turned out.
>>6171955

I'm okay with the playing with Prisma, but they should keep it to their instagram or something and not for /toy/
>>6171955
Everything about this photo is terrible.
>>6172006
Because it looks like shit.
It's Middle School art class level work. It's the equivalent of using the lens flare and other filters in Photoshop, when you have no idea how to do so properly.
People use it to make things look "flashy" and they don't know what they're doing for the most part.
>>6172041
Fair enough.
But could you go into greater detail? Why does it suck exactly. What do you specifically dislike about it? How can I improve? How could I or you recreate this in a way that is appealing?
>>6172081
I wouldn't let feedback discourage you but critique is how one learns so here goes:
What this Anon >>6172041 said is spot on
When you first start playing with software you see a range of shit you can do and it's easy to go overboard and you wind up with making pointless edits just because its cool that you can do a certain thing. The lens flare is a textbook example. I remember talking graphic design in high school and people were pointlessly adding lens flares to shit just because they could, or because they thought it was neat but it adds nothing to the picture. In fact, it takes away from it because now we can't see what's supposed to be happening.
It would be loads better if it were just the figures against a blue piece of poster board which is how many toy photographers (including myself) start out shooting. Take this Anon for example >>6170893
Whether its color correction or to remove a stand you should always have a purpose when editing. I've been known to edit a bit but as I mentioned in >>6171849 its for a reason.
Look at this >>6171786 I'd like to think that even without the color fading and stand removal its still a decent pose.
Look at pic related. When I first started taking toy pics specifically for toy photography I used to use a lomography approximation app called Hipstamatic just because I thought it looked cool. I'd take loads of these heavily filtered pics but they weren't any good regardless of whether there was any editing done or not.
In short, work on substance over style. There's no app that'll make up for a bad picture.
The best way to improve is to focus more on learning basic art and photography principals; composition, framing, color theory, lighting, and basic anatomy. As mentioned in another thread check out some YouTube videos on cinematography. I recommend Every Frame a Painting:
https://www.youtube.com/user/everyframeapainting/videos
>>6172162
Thank you. I actually dislike doing any kind of editing at all but recently started cropping/turning/compressing file size to make my pictures easier to view.
Then after reading about it on here, I tried to alter the lighting a little bit and adjusting contrast and saturation.
Prisma is just a fun little thing for me.
What about pic related? Just cropped it and left it at that.
>>6172215
When posssible try to avoid cropping things out of frame, like Bruce's sticks. Also, an unintended line like what you have on top can throw your composition off. Luckily you have the bottom surface to balance it out but the edge stops short of the frame.
Can you upload the unaltered original pic? I can take a crack at it.

Here's my crop.
Honestly, I'd just redo the picture. The base of the stand on Deadpool takes up too much space for me to convincingly remove with without Photoshop, which I don't have.
The stems would be easy enough but you have the clamp on Bruce in front of the figure. I suggest clamping the waist from behind.
Long story short, hide the stand. Unless someone with Photoshop can at least remove the base of that stand and even up the color on the wall I'd hate to say it but there's not much that can be done here.
>>6172686
Does /toyphotography/ dislike stands?
I feel like I posted in the wrong thread now and didn't put in enough effort.
There's no real composition and even though I'm... happy with the posing, it would need a lot more polish and conceptual work from the ground up. Maybe more focus on interaction between background and foreground, creating some nice depth. I should also make it less busy - the idea was that Spidey is throwing Bruce for a double team attack or maybe just throws him.
If I'll ever redo this, I'll have Spidey just throw someone and really work on capturing the force behind the throw.
I just had an idea that I liked, put some work into the poses and wanted to show, but that isn't -photography- is it?
>>6172729
>this entire post
Honestly dude, just do what you want
Don't worry about what anyone on here says. The most important thing is enjoying what you're doing
I personally would have rotated spider-man a little so the stand was behind him, or maybe even taken it out completely, I think he can hit that pose without support. One of the reasons I use the white background crutch so much is that stands get washed out very easily, like in >>6167675. I'll use a stand in a minute though, but just making sure it's in the back can go a long way.
At the end of the day though, it's little pieces of plastic, you do you. If you've got a funny picture of spider-man fighting bruce lee, then by god, post that shit.
>>6172729

Its not a personal attack, but if you come to a toy photography thread and ask how you can improve on photography you're going to get some critique.
Critique is good, its how you learn.
You can do as this Anon >>6172764 suggests and just do you which is fine but if you honestly can't take feedback or constructive criticism then perhaps don't ask for it but know that either way you're opening yourself up to criticism no matter what thread you post in so it might as well be where we're trying to lend a helping hand.
>>6172729

Nobody does, but it was a shit picture to begin with IMO
>>6172645

>>6172764
I wanted to share my pictures and receive critique in return. Of course everyone hopes for praise but you grow with criticism. The criticism was deserved. I still enjoy what I'm doing, I enjoyed what I did and I want to improve. These aren't mutually exclusive.
>>6172815
Two sorta objections:
I didn't want to take it personally or come across like that.
I don't think every comment I got can be called a critique but maybe I'm using critique wrongly. I think (proper) critique is detailed criticism including whys and hows. I can live with "it's shit" but I prefer "it's shit because..."
I try to disconnect from my personal instinctive feelings when I receive critique and of course I hope for positive criticism, but I never wanted to come off as completely dismissive of anything said in here.
I realize some things I said do come across like I took it personally (I guess you can't help it completely) but I do genuinely do mean everything I said.
Comparing my pictures to others in this thread, I feel a distinct lack of skill, a lack... of craft in regards to photography.
Doesn't discourage me from posting or posing. It encourages me to impove.
>>6172729
I don't usually post.
And I do it pretty much for fun and to get out of the damn house sometimes.

Honestly wish some of you would learn to resize their pictures.
No need for 3MB and 4500x3000 sized pictures just to show them off online.
I'm just starting to make this a hobby of mine and took this one before leaving home, am I on the right path?
>>6174790
But how else will I see out of focus and badly exposed photos in the best way possible?
>>6174895
I like it, probably could use a lower exposure and some more contrast though.
>>6174927
It was taken on my Android, but I will buy a half-decent camera as soon as I get back from AIT.
Another pic I took.
>>6174936
Nice posing
>>6174790
I agree. 1500 pixels for the max resolution is enough for internet viewing.
>>6174964
Consider the default resolution these days to be 1080x1920 with people quite often having higher resolutions. 1500 would be a pretty reasonable size for a large majority of screen resolutions and keep file sizes somewhat restrained.
There are pictures in this thread that are over 3mb and over 4000x6000 and the full resolution is noisy as fuck.
A simple resize would at least reduce the noise, and file size and make it just easier over all for everyone.
There are plenty of great quality photos in this thread under 2000x2000 and 1mb, so it's not an impossible thing to achieve.
I get that some people feel like it's a pointless thing to do but half the time it helps improve their picture drastically with just a simple resize since it hides a lot of noise and can make somewhat out of focus pictures look more in focus too.
>>6174937
>I will buy a half-decent camera
Don't fall for this idea that you need a super duper camera to take good pix.
What you used for these pix is pretty good. What you need to do is take the advice people have given/will give, and learn to do the best you can with what you have.
A huge portion of taking great photos is the set up and technical stuff that goes with it. I've seen beautiful work done with cheap mobile cameras, an absolute shit done with top of the line cameras.
It's like people think they'll do great work if they have a copy of Photoshop, when in reality PS is just a tool, not a magic fix-all. They need to know how to use it well first.
Just take your time and work on your set ups, and ideas and such first. The camera will just highlight your skills.
First toy photo I took that I actually put effort into, right around when I first started collecting.
Shitty phone camera and a nightstand lamp with a dollar tree poster board backdrop.
>>6175137
>half the time it helps improve their picture drastically with just a simple resize since it hides a lot of noise and can make somewhat out of focus pictures look more in focus too.
This is true, especially the latter. You take a slightly out of focus pic, resize it smaller, and apply just a pinch of smart sharpen, and boom, your pic will look a hell of a lot better.
I took classes in Photoshop CS4 and have experience in CS6 but how much of that would cary over to something like Elements for touching up photos? I received Photoshop Elements as a gift recently and I have yet to install it. If I'm going to really get into this shit then I wouldn't want to be using pirated software after all.
>>6175413
For touching up photos, it's all basic shit that's even included in much older Photoshop versions.
If you're a graphic designer or illustrator, then yeah you'll need to do better.
>>6175416
Well I wouldn't use Photoshop for graphic design or illustrations, I'd use Illustrator. That's what it's for.
I always failed the Illustrator portions though, could never wrap my mind around how the pen tool functions.
>>6175418
>I'd use Illustrator. That's what it's for.
...except for non-vector based stuff.
>>6175425
Fair, but from what I was taught (Granted this was almost ten years ago) most professional level design work like that was vector based because it needed to be easily resized without distortion for various purposes.
Like the difference between a logo appearing on a business card and a billboard.
As far as actual illustrations you'd probably use SAI or something similar instead.
>>6175429
A lot of people use both Photoshop and Illustrator for graphic design work, depending what needs to be done.
Not Elements, because Elements is a very watered down Photoshop made for casual photo-editing stuff (ie. for you). That was my point.
>you'd probably use SAI
...Or Photoshop. SAI is for teenagers stuck in their anime phase or people who need the stabilizer and don't have CSP/Lazy Nezumi.
>>6175429
>As far as actual illustrations you'd probably use SAI or something similar instead.
...where on earth did you get your info? I'm a professional illustrator and Photoshop is industry standard...I don't know any working professionals who actually use Sai for anything other than dicking around for fun.
>>6175137
I've just been too lazy to resize mine. I basically shoot just for Instagram and the finished product is always compressed.
>>6175311

This one is probably my favorite I've taken recently. Seen a lot of hate for the KotS figs here but honestly I really like mine.
Ku..Kurama..
I'm soaked and slightly frostbitten, but these are the best photos I've ever taken for any figure, ever.

Nice. Putting that same figure in that same pose on a blank background wouldn't have had nearly the same effect. All this talk is really making me want to get out with my camera on my next day off.

My 12mp point-and-shoot camera only takes jpgs. I'm not really good enough or ready to get anything better but I want to begin photographing some of my toys and making basic image corrections. Should I just convert the format and then do corrections or...? My phone has 14mp and ability to save raw format and some expanded functions, would I be better off with that?
Got this guy as well as Thunder Shaman and the extreme sports one off an anon on here for a great deal. Frankenpunker has always been high on my want list.
>>6180888
Dude, saving your toy pics as PNG isn't going to magically enhance the quality. That's not how it works. If your camera is that bad (like 5+ years old) just go get a newer one, but you probably just need better lighting. Turn on some lamps or install some fucking windows. 99% percent of the time someone on /toy/ complains about their camera being too shit to take good pictures it actually has to do with them taking pics in terrible lighting conditions.
>>6179621
What type of lamps you use in order to make that colored lights?
>>6181399
>install some fucking windows
kek, probably cheaper to buy a new camera than do that.
>>6180888
Just get a new camera. I use a Sony Alpha A200 and compared to other cameras its ass but its like $200.
If you don't want to dish out on a new camera you can just convert the file on your computer but you're very limited on the color correction you can make.
>>6181399
Windows make everything look nicer. Most lamps aren't true white light so there's gonna be some adjustment needed. In my opinion the only thing that tops a decent lightbox or diffuser setup is a window.
Sometimes I just take shit by a window that I don't intend to share just because the light's nice.Pic related for example.

Lemme offer an alternative view in regards to the whole Prisma thing. Prisma in and of itself, isn't bad and in some situations, it certainly helps your photos. Applying filters do not automatically make them bad.
Substance over style is good advice but it's not the end all and be all of things and sometimes, you really do need to use a filter/app to turn a "bad" picture good.
Not everyone has the setup necessary to take great pictures. A lot of us have potato level cameras and subpar lighting. Or we don't have enough space to take the photo without our personal belongings being visible in the background.
But even if you're able to take a terrific picture via a proper setup or replacing the background with photoshop, sometimes there's just no hiding that something is a toy.
Finally, it depends on what you're trying to achieve and how much time/effort you can afford to put into it. If you're going for a traditional photo, then go with >>6172162 but if you just want something fun, then do what you think is appropriate.
I remember there was a Transformers photocomic long ago that used filters to hide the fact that they were ugly ass toys. The filters helped the suspension of disbelief and allowed the author to focus more on the story.
Now, in regards to your Spidey Lee pic... I like the Spidey. Prisma makes it weird but in a good way. Like those artsy caricatures. But the Bruce Lee just looks... I'm sorry, to me, it looks kinda terrible? This Prisma filter combined with Spidey's pose, eliminates a lot of detail which actually helps in giving Spidey weird caricature-esque proportions. But Lee's generally "normal" proportions just makes him look badly filtered.

>Applying filters do not automatically make them bad.
Reasonable use of filters isn't a bad thing, its to be expected. Things get a little wonky when you're overlying on filters to turn a bad picture into a good picture--- it just won't happen. Filters act to accent certain things but it can go both ways. It can make a good picture seem better and a bad one look worse.
>Substance over style is good advice but it's not the end all and be all of things
It kinda is though, when it comes to toy photography a lot of people focus more on the toy part and less on the photography part. Yes, the whole point is to have fun doing it but at the end of the day there's no shortcut to taking good pictures and the better the picture the more people beyond the artist will appreciate it.
>Not everyone has the setup necessary to take great pictures.
True, don't be a gearfag. You can take amazing pictures with just a cell phone camera and horrible pictures with a $1400 Canon kit. It's not about the tools, its about the craftsman. Bob Ross could've made an impressive work of art using school grade map pencils.
>it depends on what you're trying to achieve and how much time/effort you can afford to put into it.
Word. Pic related is from two different toy photographers I follow and admire on Instagram. Top is hot.kenobi and bottom is sgtbananas. Both are awesome pics but one very clearly has more effort put into it. However, they both follow and understand basic principals of lighting, color, composition, framing etc.
Like I said before, there's no shortcut to good toy photography, its like drawing. Anyone can doodle but the people who actually know how to draw spend time practicing and learning certain concepts; they didn't just pick up a pencil and decided to go for it expecting quick results.
In the end its really about how much fun you want have with it and how good you wanna get.
cont...
I usually don't use prisma for toyphotography myself, because it simply doesnt look like a photo anymore if you willingly reduce the depth of it, buuuut i wanted to give it a try, and since the inspiration material is a manga anyways i give it a go.

Plenty of Anons here just take what can be considered average to below average pictures but it doesn't matter--- they're not trying to be creative they're trying to have fun and snap a pic to capture it.
What I have a problem with is when people reject critique or think they're somehow above it. that's my biggest issue with the ACBA.
Look at pic related. The four in the grid are from four different toy photographers, but two of them are "prominent" ACBA artists that talk a lot of shit about how good they are and how the rest of us need to "step it up" Notice how cliche and homogenous they both look?
This is why critique is important as well as not acting like you're somehow exempt or beyond criticism and learning. I guarantee neither of those two took the time to actually learn photography theories which would be fine except for the fact that they act like they're God's gift to the hobby.
Dioramas can be good, that Iron Giant one is testament that not EVERYTHING has to be in an alley and the one on the far right shows that you can take typical ACBA tropes like the cutout words and actually kinda make it work with good composition and flow.
In the end, I say do what you want and how you want it but if you're actually looking to improve then be open to feedback from others and don't overestimate yourself because there's nothing worse than a Marvel Legends figure fighting a bunch of mooks right in front of a brick wall with clashing color backdrops and poor white balance telling us to "be on their level"
>>6183612
>>Substance over style is good advice but it's not the end all and be all of things
>It kinda is though
It depends on the objective. But given that this is a photography thread, I'll concede the point. Seeing as the objective of such a thread, should indeed be to take "good" photographs as opposed to having a stylistic/crutched presentation.
>True, don't be a gearfag.
Yup. Although the first camera I ever had was truly terrible for toy photography. It gave me years of enjoyable and was pretty much the best thing I ever spent money on. But a combination of my circumstances and its limitations made taking even decent photos quite difficult. A moot point though as a modern phone's camera can do a pretty good job.
>However, they both follow and understand basic principals of lighting, color, composition, framing etc.
Can't argue with that.
Welp, long story short, I agree with you in general. And critique is well, critical to improvement. Ideally, filters should be used as appropriate, but I do think that depending on an anon's objective and circumstances, a heavy (but reasonable) reliance on filters is fine.
I've been waiting YEARS for something like Prisma. It's not perfect and generally speaking, a lot of the filters aren't that great anyway. There was a time when it would have been a godsend. Not so anymore, but that's why I don't begrudge others of it.
>>6183626
>that's my biggest issue with the ACBA.
ACBA's biggest problem is that while they encourage critique and feedback, they are incapable of actually TAKING any critique. I made some comment in a private group on FB about how ACBA is mostly just the same recycle alleyway reused over and over. I guess someone else in the group was an ACBA member. They screen shotted my comment, forwarded to the admins at ACBA and I was banned and blocked instantly LOL. No real loss, I just think its funny how insecure they are with any form of criticism to their "brand".
