I'm just about done with toy collecting. I've been on a 3 month streak of shitty "luck" with every figure that I've bought. QC issues left and right. With NECA. With Hasbro. With Diamond Select. Now, with SH Figuarts--because I listened to you fucks and caved into HURR MY HIGH END JAPANESE FIGUrrrr fever...

So my high(er) end Luke from BANDAI comes in and I think, "Maybe I'll break the curse with this one." Nope, I see two big dark splotches of paint wash on his hair when I take him out of the package. Decide to see if I can remove them by using a pencil eraser, and, well, it worked but it also worked in removing some of the wash elsewhere, meaning the notorious garish gold paint on his hair now stands out even more than usual. Now I can't fucking look at this figure without sperging out and having an OCD fit.

Fuck ya'll and your "finer" taste in figures, seriously.

Here's what you'll get from a model, straight out of the box, before stickers and paint are added. This looks worse than something Mattel would make.
These are actually well done models, so anyone who's just cutting them out with nail clippers, not filling the seam, and aren't sanding down the nubs will get something worse looking.

Toys and models are not interchangable. Go to the Robot Damashii thread and tell them to go buy models instead will get you called a troll or told to get out for even suggesting non-playable things, and these people have no problem with buying Bandai stuff.

Oh, and stickers and waterslides solve the problem? Stickers are shit. Waterslides are nice, but even people in the model threads have problems with them. So if you're new, have fun with your halved, crooked slide.

Don't get me wrong.
I like Bandai's model kits, but for humans and such? They lack in dynamic everything. Look at Darth Vader's quilted tunic and it's completely lifeness. There's no movement to it at all, whereas other figures actually have it sculpted where it'll look natural in most poses.
I mostly stick to Bandai's Gundams, various mecha and spaceship stuff. Great, easy kits.

I know how much /toy/ loves shitting on bad paint jobs, but when people are actually suggesting newbies to build and paint a model kit, that's just a laugh. A chinese kid is literally better than almost everyone in this thread when it comes to their ability in paint apps.

But like i said, to even compare them is retarded. The hollow weight will never go away, but using a matte spray will fix the ugly plastic look very fast.
Think spray painting is easy? Sure, but if you just apply it like a tard without going through various steps, it can look pretty bad. The steps? Shake can for about five minutes.
Make sure it's a quality brand, like Krylon (relatively large and cheap for about $5) or Tamiya (half cans that cost $15). I'm sure this will rile up elitist modelers, but whatever. They're both great brands and completely comparable in terms of look and durability.
Spray in single one way motions, starting before and ending spraying after passing over it. You don't want to cover the entire thing in one pass, it should be layered.

Sound complex? Sure, but it's simple if you've been doing it for years and comes to you second nature, but it's a lot of step and why i'd never suggest someone buying a model if they just want an action figure, especially when there are perfectly good ones that DO look better than even your tenth try on a model.

Want to build a model? Take it to the multiple model threads we have. It's a lot of fun, if you're into it and most people aren't. Even those of us who do find it fun have a nice stack of unbuilt models that we'll totally get into when we don't feel burnt out... a year from now.
Want to have fun with a toy this month that looks good? Buy the BS/Figuarts/Figma/whatever.

So I did as another anon suggested and grabbed 2 of the titanfall 2 blindbox guns from gamestop. Got both for like 3.50$. Managed to get the smg and the rifle though I wish I got the battle rifle instead, and now I sort of want the sword. These should fit well with my incoming sabine.

I also grabbed the titanfall 2 pilot figure and got a FO tie pilot for free for about 13$. The tf2 pilot has the same assault rifle only painted and it might fit with sabine's color scheme. It may also be too big since the pilot is like neca scale.

Figured I'd post my Black Series collection. I hadn't collected figures since Revenge of the Sith, but I got wrapped up in Force Awakens hype and started a new collection. I have nearly 300 figures I had a kid at my parents house but so far I'm liking my adult (or manchild) collection. Only bad one is Darth Vader with his useless hands and bad helmet. Chewie's bowcaster is a fragile piece of shit and his catepillar articulation is obnoxious but that aside he actually looks really good. Want to get more.

Ok so the weapons work pretty well with The tie pilot which was a surprise. Thought they would be too small and only look good with the smaller female figures. The rifle may be a tad small, also its hard to get the tie pilot to hold it as it has part of the stock cutting the bottom of the handle might have to file that down. Anyways good pick up for 3.50$. I agree that in pics the Revell looks too flat, and I think the edges of the Revell are a bit too thin which accentuates that flatness. When you look at it In-hand though, I feel they got the Destroyer's overall thickness right.

Managed to snag mine when Amazon randomly had it on sale for half off and it was easily worth that price, but even at the $30 MSRP I think you'd be happy with it if you're looking for a Destroyer to rumble around the house. It's a really nice kit that's more of a toy than a model, yet still maintains a good degree of detail. Could definitely look even better with a little bit of work!

The Figuarts has my favorite sculpt of Phasma with slimmer, more feminine proportions. In contrast, the Black Series is far too bulky.

The Figuarts' weakness is that it's rather short relative to other 6" lines. While I think she looks great with other Figuarts, she'll be far too short for any other 6" Star Wars figure line. Conversely the Black Series is actually kinda too tall (even considering the actress' height) , but that works well for an imposing commander-type.

If you have a bunch of Figuarts FO troopers, go for the SHF Phasma as she'll fit in superbly with them. Alternatively, if you just want a stand-alone Phasma that looks great, again the SHF is a good option thanks to the proportions and a more attractive silver paint job (much shinier than the Black Series in-person). But, if you have mostly Black Series figures or aren't really enthused with the character, then the Black Series is a fine figure with a good bang for the buck.
