For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

***Non-Gundam Group Build***

So this is pretty straightforward, build something that isn't Gundam. I literally do not care what it is, if it's not Gundam it counts (and just to get this out of the way, Bandai is fine). I do not require full paint jobs this time either, as I know the vast majority of people here build Bandai and that's it.

This is also not a prize build, but a regular group build.

I'm new to gunpla. The only thing I've done is put together the G-Self and Grimoire 1/44 kits. I'm wanting to finish my plan of creating a kitbash for my custom mobile suit from Gundam Breaker 3 this year. Considering basically every part is from a wildly different type/era of gundam; I'm wondering how I can check whether they'll be compatible parts, or whether y'all can just tell me. I know they're in scale (1/144) it's just for example: i can't imagine Hy-Gogg parts would both fit on and be mechanically sound attached to a catsith.

Also, i'll need to get the kits i need for their parts but some are older and around $30 for just my kitbash's torso hurts. I'm wondering if there's an aftermarket where i can purchase the parts i need from other people who havent used them, or i can sell the parts i don't need.

(Pice not related but dang is it handsome)

>>
>>6110104
Check dalong.net
You can view pretty much every modern HG manual and see for yourself if the connections will fit.
If they don't, try your hand at modding it.
I don't believe there's an aftermarket. You could try here, or on /m/ to trade/buy spares

I'm thinking about spraying some topcoat on my kits to give them a matte finish but I heard it was greatly affected by weather. It's currently 37°F and there's an humidity rate of 85%, I'm guessing it's not a good idea?

It's not bad at all, but when compared to the MG it doesn't hold up well. I think there's a lot of blank white areas that could have been cast in other colors too.

Not that anon, but I'd like to explain why I'm not a fan.

Personally, I don't the Turn A designs in general. The excessive lining puts me off, as it feels unneeded, like in the thighs and forearms of the Turn A. That detail then clashes with the calmer parts like the head and shoulders. (These two being my favorite parts, they look cool.)

Another design choice I'm not a fan of is the back of the legs. While they do serve a cool purpose, I'm just not a fan of how they look.

However, the mech design in Turn A didn't put me off so much that I dropped the show, which made up for the mechs, in my opinion.

Digging the double arms, multi-armed and green suits are my jam.

The yellow on the gun got a little runoff near thebottom. I d say clean that a bit so it looks nice and even.

The weathering seems to be inconsistent on some parts, for that id suggest looking up some tutorials. With its current state and a bit of work you can make it look like its been in a martian sandstorm or something like that.

Also take care of the noticeable nubs.

Do you? Garage Kit just refers to stuff made by small teams or individual artisans rather than a large company. All of Daibadi's GKs are toys, and Halfeye's early resin figures are GKs. Even gunpla conversion kits count since they're using toys as a base to make a different looking toy.

Dom MG is a cool kit.

Build of the body is boring, but the head, legs, and arms are fun. Comes with an assload of accessories, too.

2 different launchers
1 SMG
2 Sturmfausts (large and small handles)
1 sword

Only issue is articulation of the thighs, you don't get much wiggle room, but the feet, hands, and arms are good.

Well, you've got to work on your nub work. The thing is speckled with them. Weathering on straight up bare plastic is bad and lazy too. Eventually the stuff you out on flakes off.

Practice removing nubs and sanding entire kits. You can get decent packs of sanding sponges from Sally's for like $12 for 12. I like them because since they're sponges, they conform to shapes.

For the "paint", dry brushing the shit out of stuff is the lazy way out. I used to do it all the time too, but it doesnt make for good weathering. You want it to tell a story. Only weather in areas that'd get beat. Try chipping, and lightly damaging edges. Use silver to dry brush too.

This manner of thinking is literally the only thing holding you back from doing so. Richigo wasn't born with his skill at modeling, he had to practice.

Buy a $8 GM and practice something that looks daunting on it. If you fuck up, then who cares? It was on a cheap model that you were using for practice anyway. Then you just keep trying until you get it.

Yes, but it's my manner of thinking and we've grown accustomed to each other over the years. That and cutting to molding things is skipping a few steps when I'm little more than a snapshit now. It'll be one of those things to consider when I've got more room and tumbled farther down the slope.

Panel lines are good, but clean up the weathering stains, if that's what taht's supposed to be.
It literally looks like you took a shit on your hand, then smeared that shit all over the part.
Less is more when it comes to weathering. Look up pictures of how people do weathering on warhammer figs or tanks. I'd say look up gunpla, but at least 60% of what you'd find on google images are from guys who don't do it correctly either.

Snapshit is a derogatory term that's silly. Are you trying your best and putting your heart into the kits you build? Are you enjoying yourself? Everyone here is a builder, it does not matter if you paint, panel line or hot glue your kit. All that matters is your enjoyment and the sense of accomplishment you get from building.

Not to sound stupid, but gunpla is (and models in general are) freedom. Be it snapping together your first kit, your first time using a sharpie to paint a damaged black sticker, or even hundreds of kits later when you are customizing your pride and joy kits. That is a special sort of freedom that you should happily love.

A toy is meant to make the owner happy, and if a gunpla does that to you, you are one of us. No insults or even classist remarks about the gunpla of others. Find friendship through work, teach new builders the lessons you learned. All in all, have fun and play nice with other - be proud of whatever you build, and know that this general will happily cheer for your work.

Was thinking of getting the Vallejo 72 basic game color set for airbrushing gunpla, but wanted to know if you guys thought it was a good choice. I'm new to airbrushing (got all the equipment, just need to practice) but not new to building gunpla; I've been wanting to step up my game for a while now but getting a hold of hobby paints is difficult for me, so I figured stocking up would be a good idea. Price isn't a huge deal, as I plan for this to last me a long while, my only worry is whether or not the game color range is compatible with airbrushes (unsure as there is an range specifically for airbrushing listed on the Vallejo site) and how long these paints can stay on the shelf.

About to start my own RG Zaku II. Any advice to give? Also damn fine taste in Riders.
>>
>>6113549

First, high-five for Kamen Rider Black appreciation... then now to the RG impressions, I started from the legs>crotch>torso>head>arms.

The legs and arms are the best constructed part of this kit, everything will fit great and the nubs are generally easy to remove.

The nubs on the skirt can be a bit of a pain in the ass to clean. As for the skirt being loose, it doesn't seem like an issue until the kit itself is pieced together and you're posing it around. I'd recommend lightly cementing/gluing (don't put too much, since the parts on RG are so thin, you don't want to melt them all to smithereens with cement) the green skirt plates to the parts of the inner frame that is holding it. If it's not an issue, leave it alone.

The real troublemaker for me is the mono-eye lens. So it has a cool gimmick where the eye tracks with where you're moving the head. It also has a cool clear part that acts like a windshield, the problem is that it's such a tight fit... that it can push the sticker off the monoeye lens when you move it around. I've had to open and reposition and reglue the mono-eye sticker to the piece a few times...

The tubing on the head/snout also likes to pop off, I've just glued the connecting end to the snout. Again be wary, if you glue it and it tugs the wrong way, it can break. If you don't... you might drop the beads that are being held by the connector and lose them (and there are no spares for the ones on the head, there are spares for the ones on the waist and legs... which are very secure...). I've glued mine and I'm pretty confident I won't break it.

The armor on the end of the wrist also likes to pop off... and I've just ended up gluing those to make sure they don't pop off anytime I change wrist/hands. Again be careful, you just want the end pieces to glue together, don't want to get the cement on the joint.

Other than that, I love this kit. It's a great looking mold.
>>
>>6113556
>The legs and arms are the best constructed part of this kit, everything will fit great and the nubs are generally easy to remove.
Sorry correcting myself, the legs and torso-cockpit area are the best engineered part of the RG Zaku II kit.
>>
>>6113556
Thanks mate, I might put it off till I am a bit more awake and a bit more confident in that case.

Also, all you need now are Riders 1 and 2, and Amazon for your collection. Maybe Riderman as well.
>>
>>6113566

I love those Riders but I already have the Takeya SIC for them which I love and don't collect SHF other than KR Black, Black RX, Shadowmoon and Ultraman.

You should put off the RG until you're more awake definitely haha. I took my time with it, only building whenever I have free time and feel like I'm up to it. It's not difficult, just can get tedious since even a forearm would take 5 different parts to form around an inner frame. Good thing is that the inner frame comes assembled, just don't be confused when the instruction ask you to disassemble an inner frame that came... assembled on the spurs.
>>
>>6113473
The picture's good but you should resize them so it doesn't flip, also work on thise nubs like the other anon said

I didn't know the grimgerde had the graze eye hatch and that really makes me want to get one now

>>
>>6113493
Vallejo are good, just remember to thin them properly and it's best to use a retarder. You can use distilled water for the thinner, but you'll get better results if you use an actual thinner (or make your own).
>>
>>6113549
The tubes on the legs have a spring in them, the end parts of which have a thin spigot on them which is also connected to the sprue gate. Don't accidentally cut off the spigot like I did. It's salvageable by putting the first band on the attachment piece and super gluing the spring inside the well created, but still annoying.

I actually tried to be a bit more subtle on this side. But I kinda like how the streaks look like dripping mud. Maybe I should add a bit of orange or some other color to make it look less brown. Then again. I'm still experimenting, and all the tutorials I seen online just over blend everything not leaving any cool detail in the paint which makes it feel kind flat to me. I'm all for ambient color, but I feel I need some striking stuff too.

I'll keep in mind of scale for the next parts, but I like it as is right now since it's right at it's ass, and if he was fighting in the rain a ton of mud would get kicked up back there.

But again, I'm just experimenting since it's really my first try. I have only really textured in 3D and there it's much easier to make finer detail since I can just zoom in.

if you're scared of doing a color scheme you could always just get a kit with a lot of stickers and paint in where the stickers go

If you construct a makeshift sharpener in the same vein as a pencil sharpener, you can use it to bevel the edges of rods and tubes.

Don't forget to get a larger container of primer, even if that case contains primer you'll probably run out soon if it's the same amount as the color bottles.

Oh. That's pretty cool man.

It's his fucking kit, he can make as many or as little changes as he likes. It's his artistic freedom.

My Leo is almost ready for painting, some of the parts need a little more smoothing. But I think I'm more or less finished.

I didn't respond because I thought he was getting mad for no reason, but thank you anyway.
I'm also painting the inner frame, matte black, the cockpit hatch in grey, and the interior of the armor in a more saturated shade of blue wherever it's visible.
Gotta put this painter's tape to good use.
>>
>>6114839
When I built my gouf custom, I went with panzer grey on the interior of the armour pieces but other than that, just the regular colour scheme. I'm building another one at the moment which will have more colour separation.

Are you going to be using cans?

Zaku I is my favorite UC grunt, but that bar in the middle of the mono-eye doesn't seem like a good idea.

Good job on the kit though.Looks bad ass.
>>
>>6114846
Yes.
Am planning on getting an airbrush kit, but wanted to work with something simpler for my first attempt. In retrospect maybe I should have gotten the airbrush first.

I got the MG Hykaku Shiki 2016 ver for Xmas and I haven't gotten around to building it yet.

I don't have paints, but what is the kit like straight out of the box? Should I wait around to customise it, or is it great on its own?

Add weights to your stands, Its easy enough if you have access to any old pewter GW models. Just melt them down and mold it into the bottom of the base.
>>
>>6115164
While I love the GP02, the kit is so horribly clunky and outdated. Not too mention and the shield it impossible to pose on the kit short of gluing it to its fucking hand.

How do you explain your hobby to others? Have you ever had anyone give an odd reaction from you telling/them seeing it?

I just tell people that I build giant robots, and that gets a few chuckles.

What would you chose? Zaku II MS-06F MG 2.0. or RG? Looking at the pictures, RG seems more detailed.
