For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

***Non-Gundam Group Build***

So this is pretty straightforward, build something that isn't Gundam. I literally do not care what it is, if it's not Gundam it counts (and just to get this out of the way, Bandai is fine). I do not require full paint jobs this time either, as I know the vast majority of people here build Bandai and that's it.

This is also not a prize build, but a regular group build.

Luckily most of the parts are undergated and Tomytec placed the nubs intelligently enough that they are all hidden.

A lot of the parts are snap-fit but glue is still very much required.
>>
>>6046970
>On a scale of HG to RG, how fragile are they
Imagine an RG with half the parts falling out because they are not snap-fit. Also painted on sprues means you need to be extra careful cutting them off so you don't damage the paintjob.

Tomytec sure has some tricky waterslides.

This was easily the most difficult/nerve-wracking part of the whole build. Normal waterslides are nothing by comparison.

You apply these waterslides on top of flat topcoat, normal ones would silver.

TomyTec solved the problem by making the waterslides super thin and sticky but because they are so thin you cannot apply them normally, so they put them on this film that keeps them together but you need to peel it off 24hr later.

When you apply them you need to roll qtip over them a few times to push all the water from under and to make the actual waterslides stick. If you don't the whole thing will come off when you peel off the film. I learned that the hard way by wasting a whole set of them (pic related).

Oh yeah, the letters and the numbers are separate waterslides, so you apply the numbers, wait 24hr, peel the film, apply letters, wait 24hr, peel the film and try not to peel off the numbers in the process. Fun times.

Are there any major seamlines in the MG Zaku 2.0? I want to paint one but I'm shit at seamfilling.

Any tips for seamfilling? I have Tamiya Extra Thin and I've tried coating ends and the top, but it always comes out like I didn't do anything, even when I hold it tight for a solid 20 minutes and leave it for a day to cure
>>
>>6047179
There's no seam to clear. Maybe some mold lines.

Extra thin doesn't work like that, you let it flow between the seam line then press the melted plastic out.

The method you described is for their normal cement, which doesn't evaporate as fast as the thin one. It has already evaporated by the time you press them together.

Today I got scammed half the price when my Hyaku Shiki finally got delivered to me this morning.
What happened was customs withheld it for 5 days and sent me a letter instructing me to email an invoice of of my SAL parcel to them.
So this is where I fucked up. I sent the email receipt I got from the payment to them.
Normally if I'm unlucky with purchases, I get charged for customs on it when it arrives at my doorstep.

When it finally fucking delivered today I saw that the item cost written by the seller was much less then what it actually costed me.
It turned out the filthy government tax collecting leeches opened up my parcel (had a sticker saying opened for examination) and decided that this lovely Shiny MG Hyaku Shiki box couldn't have cost this little. They withheld it from me for 5 fucking days under my nose and coerced me in sending the invoice.
I'm a fucking idiot and I was overly impatient and eager to aquire it as quickly as possible, since I have been eyeing this kit for over a year now. So as you know, I forward them the proper invoice.
I ended up paying everything because of his mistake.

If I wasn't such an impatient fool who lets people take advantage of me, I should of emailed the seller asking how much he put down for the item cost and get him to send me another invoice or even write or photoshoped my own one if I knew what he put down.

I really appreciate the seller for what he did and I could of gotten away with it if I played my cards right. Though I wished the seller had put down a price that was something more believable then what he wrote but he has my gratitude. One of the things I hate about big stores like amiami is that they don't underwrite the item price when sending it.

Excuse me for this rant post but I thought it might serve as a heads up if you come across a situation like this and I also needed to vent out for the sake of my mental stability since I'm a bit on the autism spectrum.

How large is 1/24th scale. I have yet to actually figure out how model scale works. Is it the amount of assembled kits that would be needed to make a full sized version or something?

So model scaling works like this. Using 1/24 scale, for every 24 inches on the "actual" thing, the model has 1 inch. So figure out how big the real thing is, and then do some math and you got your answer.

Finally done with HGUC Qubeley. Good build overall.
Shoulders, eyes, and the dots on the forearms were handpainted. The rest is unpainted. Word of warning: I tried to airbrush Vallejo polyurethane matte varnish on this. If you spray it unthinned, it looks good but completely clogs up the airbrush in seconds (Iwata HP-CS). Thinned, it's very easy to airbrush but it doesn't look as nice, and it makes it peel at the slightest touch even days later. If you look closely you can see places where it's begun to peel. I ended up just giving the entire model another short spray from a can of Tamiya flat to hopefully protect it, and I'm going to avoid handling it much.

From what I remember, car modellers use polishing compound or 10,000 grit sponges to smoothen out a paintjob or even the primer layers before any further applications of paint or topcoats.

So you can try wetsanding that way to fix the brush strokes at least? And yes, Kotobukiya and God Hand have super high grit sponges available.

You have to work up to 10,000 grit or mount it to a power tool to get it to flatten anything.

You can micromesh pads on amazon that go up to 10k grit, they'll last a few kits worth of good use, just don't sand roughly with them (pressing them up against hard plastic or metal), they'll wear out quickly.
>>
>>6050296
I understand that, but right now I'm hand painting grunt kits. When/if I ever delve into air brushing is when I'd need that, I feel.

What a stupid claim. Those are common for military models. 1/60 and 1/100 are common for gunpla. 1/24 and 1/32 are common for cars. There are different standards for different types of models.
>>
>>6050498
You asked why does 1/72 exist. 1/72 exists because other models existed before GunPla existed. GunPla was made to adapt and fit with established scales. Hence why 1/100 and 1/60 are odd scales

Look into actual scale model or real world weathering patterns. Less is more, don't overdo it. Step back every so often to just see it as a whole. Just finished assembling the main part of this RG GP01, really fun build. So much engineering in this thing, pretty much every single step includes cleverly placed gating to hide nub marks, or some little adjustment to move a part after it's put together. The only part I ended up having trouble with somehow was placing the red piece over the v-fin, nearly ended up hamhanding the fins in half but it turned out alright.

Now the downside to having so many individual parts for a 1/144, it's fiddly as fuck. I've only made one MG kit, the 3.0 Gundam, but that was quite solid. Due to the way the core fighter exists as the central part of the torso as well as the backpack attachment, any adjustment to the main body of the kit has to be done really carefully or
A. the chest assembly will separate from the core fighter
B. the core fighter will separate from the waist assembly

Now I'm not a perfectionist by any means, that's why I like the fact that the overwhelming amount of detail on a RG kit kind of overshadows the small imperfections, or at least that's what I've convinced myself.

The head is an SD. The thighs are custom made and are a a quarter length of the original thighs. The ankles are the legs of the SD.

If you have any questions with SDHGs, I have a Twitter you can ask me questions at, since I don't frequent 4chan as much as I used to.

I swear, I cannot get away from gundam kits. walking around in barnes and noble last year I see the gundam wing kits, and picked up deathscythe hell and built him. didn't finish or clean him up or anything, and he's been sitting in the box for a year. then i'm walking around in hobbytown usa in delafield, and there's a HG Wing Zero 1/100 for 16 bucks. said fuck it and bought him. now I really want to get into finishing models. on my way back to madison i went to hobby lobby and bought a tube of tamiya putty and went to target and picked up a bunch of nail files and buffers. what the fuck is it about this hobby that makes me want to keep coming back to it after having barely touched anything since my early twenties about 10 years ago!

Definitely thinking of Graze (I do like the custom but liking the regular Graze a bit more) and F.A. Thunderbolt
I think so far from what little I know, I really only like RX 78-2 and Thunderbolt for the main-gundam looking ones. So I guess I might actually hold off on buying any more RGs for now.

Any opinions on the thunderbolt zaku II + rifle set?

I have five SD kits to build now, just unsure of which to start with, let alone if I want to binge build them all. Hell, if anyone wants to suggest what one I should build out of them, I might even do so:
-Sazabi
-Nu Gundam
-RX-78-T
-Hyaku Shiki
-Zeta Gundam.

The Kampfer was probably my main reintroduction to Gundam when I was in my twenties. Never watched War in the Pocket, but a Zeon loving friend sent me a youtube link to the Kampfer vs. Alex fight. The shotguns and urban assault design sold it for me. Glad you enjoy the design!

The Gouf Custom is also another great design. Those two were my first Gunpla and I would highly recommend them to others.

>>
>>6052478

>>
>>6052762
Snapshit's a tripfag who lowers quality of discussion by spamming low-quality pictures of low-quality built Gunpla, opinions that are contrarian for the sake of it, as well as his insistence to avatarfag every single post he makes, calling the pictures "reaction faces". He does all this thinking that he is always right, and he improves thread, when really he does not.

He is active both on /toy/ and /m/, and while /toy/ at least got him to not use his trip, Snapshit continues to plague the /m/ thread (and /m/ in general) by vocalizing his hate for the IBO designs (going so far as to denounce the current groupbuild, even though he doesn't do anything to his models, not even nub removal or panel lining), creating generals that are essentially echo chambers due to most people filtering his trip and any tripfag associated with him, and spamming the actual general thread with random images because his threads don't get used.
>>
>>6052762
>Check the /m/ variant of this thread and you';ll see. He is a shitposter that has inhabited all of /m/ for at least 2 years now it feels like. He has nubby, non-panel lined, non-painted kits, refuses to improve despite saying he would, bashes everyone, acts superior, brings in more stupid trip users, and writes up stupid threads. All while samefagging with the same images. And when he gets insulted he takes off his trip and spams photos of fake kit announcements.

AND NOBODY BANS HIM BECAUSE /M/ HAS NO MODS.

He is probably the single reason a good chunk of the posters in that general (and here, when they pass over) are salty as fuck.

>>
>>6052777
Yeah, you're doing yourself a favor by not knowing of his existence outside of talk here.

In terms of that insult while it does see usage most people accept that for the first couple of kits it's normal and then the person will (hopefully) upgrade in building skill if they like modeling as a hobby for real.
>>
>>6052784
Yeah, I've not been on /m/ since Kamen Rider Decade.

I stick to OOB kits, but I make a point to make them as clean as possible. No visible nubs, proper filing. I have yet to really do seam welding or panel lining, and I am about ten kits in so far. I suppose I can understand the dislike of people who build like that from modelers who spend hours and hours perfecting a single kit between painting and subtle mods.
>>
>>6052806
You owe it to yourself to at least try panel lining and a topcoat. So little work for such a huge difference with those two things alone.
>>
>>6052763

>>
>>6052806
I'm >>6052784 and agree with >>6052843, it is an easy thing to merely add the lines on a kit and then spray it with a good coating for it to look proper, otherwise the plastic sheen isn't so hot looking with sanding on it. A top coat will reduce the scratch marks you see. Beyond that, if you are 10 kits into the hobby and it seems like you'll continue perhaps grab a few brushes and some modeling paints from a store nearby/online (NOT ARTIST PAINTS THEY'RE BAD FOR THIS) and paint a kit. It's very soothing.

I'm gonna skip handbrushing and go straight to airbrushing, is bad idea?
>>
>>6053017
You'll want to handbrush some detailing regardless of whether you airbrush or not, so you're not getting away there. Well, I guess you could just ignore that bit, but you shouldn't. And having to re-mask and clean out the airbrush for the smallest touch-up would be a massive pain in the ass.

And that's ignoring panel lining. It'd take a certain kind of complete lunatic to even think of airbrushing that, and a combination of ungodly skill and a very specific paintbrush (there are those made specifically for extremely fine line and detail work) to make it anything but utter rubbish.

At the same time, hand-brushing the overall paint coat, while certainly possible, definitely ain't the easy route if you want shit to look decent. So if you want to do more with painting than panel lin9ing and such, you'd probably want to move on to airbrushing quite quickly anyway.

Iawata airbrushes are supposedly ok.

The compressor there looks very anemic. Shit shouldn't fit in your pocket.
>>
>>6053041
What color will you add next?

Also, the general flow of masking camo off is main color -> mask areas that you want to keep -> second color -> mask -> third color etc, right? You just keep slowly masking off finished bits then adding the colors? The at certain points you can blend the areas together with some shading to not make it not so obviously sectioned off?

I read a short guide but asking someone seems helpful too, if you can spare the time.

An off-black.

>You just keep slowly masking off finished bits then adding the colors?

Yes. Usually you go from the lightest to the darkest colour since that makes it easier to make things cover properly, though I've deviated a bit here, the sprayed-over tape you might be able to see hides a darker green first colour.

>The at certain points you can blend the areas together with some shading to not make it not so obviously sectioned off?

Most camo is hard-edged, so you just leave it like that (the goal is to create contrast in shapes different from the item you're trying to camouflage, so the brain sees and promptly ignores that instead of a tank/soldier/mech). For soft-edged camo you can either mask, paint, unmask and then go over the edges with the airbrush freehand, or you just skip the masking altogether and freehand the entire thing.

Another option to get ever so slightly fuzzy edges is to put the masking a bit above the model, you might use blue-tac and let the edge be very rounded to produce overhang, have a hand-held mask that you hold a bit above, or maybe make such masks and then blue-tac them on to place them a bit above.
>>
>>6053131
That's very helpful of you, I appreciate it.

This was the tutorial I saw, it did involve blutac and was rounded like you mentioned. It just seems like the same method for a different style of camo.
