For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

Secret Santa

It's that time of year again. Just look at the form and fill it out. Signups last until December 1st, pairs go out in the days after that.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdprprkU_4UBARdot0ASSmoUoxghk9bOPVuRrvZKfghAZQRbg/viewform?c=0&w=1

A few things:
-Use an active email, I don't want to be hounding you and then have to repair someone.
-Use your full address, I don't know every damn city and zip code in the US.

A new option, Cards Only. If you pick this you're assumed to be willing to ship international (it's a card after all). It doesn't have to be a handmade card, just something nice. Of course handmade is nicest, but not everyone has the skills for it.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdprprkU_4UBARdot0ASSmoUoxghk9bOPVuRrvZKfghAZQRbg/viewform?c=0&w=1

As always, I'm available here, on IRC, or at [email protected].

I have only watched the first two Gundam OVAs, almost all of Wing, bits and pieces of G Gundam, few episodes of 008th Team and all but the last part of Unicorn to be honest. All of Build Fighters and BFT as well. I suppose I lack the taste that comes with late UC like Zeta and such.

I have some questions regarding airbrushing:

What are some good topcoats for airbrushing?

Is pre-thinned paint good enough to be poured in, or does it need additional thinning?
>>
>>6018066
Ah, thanks. They looked similar at first glance, but now I just feel dumb at thinking they were one and the same.
>>
>>6018060
Just the moisture buildup in the tank resulting in rust. I forgot to drain mine after a lengthy spray session and the same happened to me.

I wouldn't worry about it until the tank is actually compromised and start leaking, just remember to drain often

Should anything happen to the tank, could I get it serviced/replaced at places where they sell non hobby compressor tanks? It's because mine is like pic.
>>
>>6018123

you could, but it usually costs more than replacing the entire thing. For hobby use, any small compressor does the job as long as it outputs up to 20 psi max (even that is more than you need), normally i use mine at around 15 for priming and around 7 for shading. The main thing is noise, if your in a garage its no problem. Get a good moisture trap & a cheap compressor like you showed in your pic it should last for years. They all have a bleed valve, just bleed it every couple of sessions it will last.
>>
>>6018219
>bleed valve
Looking at the manual and I don't see any bleed valve. I;m assuming this is the drain valve that I unscrew at the bottom of the tank.
>>
>>6018221

Comes with the Anti-material Rifle, pile bunker, and various little attachment pieces.

The little c-clip male piece can be plugged either sides of the rifle.

You can unplug the skirt booster of Gundam Astaroth and plug in the attachment parts to the rifle. You can also sorta just use the monopod to support the rifle if you don't wanna detach the skirt armor. I found that you can attach the rifle directly onto Astaroth Origin's skirt armor.

There are a few pieces of attachment parts that plug into Gundam Astaroth's backpack. They are aesthetically similar to the tiny rod that holds the demolition knife.

There are two tiny clips that I would imagine are for the panzerfausts. Unfortunately I don't have any sturmfaust/panzerfausts, would have to wait until the kotobukiya MSG parts or find some gundam weapon packs that came with them.

These clips also can be plugged onto four holes on the side of the pile bunker. The Gunpla stock photo also used this pile bunker as a weapon storage that plugs onto the backpack rod. Giving this to Astaroth Origin gives it somewhat an Alt Eisen feel to it.

>>6018516
I forgot to mention on the previous post, you can see that you can attach weapons onto the C-clip via the outside clip like that light sword, or the inside box like the cleaver.

If you wanna do the option of taking off the side skirt armor to attach the rifle AND have the panzerfausts in the back, you pretty much have to buy two sets for that particular attachment part. The kit only comes with one.

I really wish they would have given use two panzerfausts and an additional elongated oval attachment part so you have pretty much that full armament Astaroth you see in those linearts.

Overall I do enjoy the set, even though it is the stereotypical magazine with extra parts to boost sales of both kinda thing.

Alclad is a coin flip. Shit is so damn finicky about the humidity and pressure used. Get it right? Smooth. Otherwise grainy and requires some wet sanding.

get some wave pearl powder, you mix it in to a clear cote & spray it over your base colour. The pearl finish looks a lot better than the prismatic alclad pearls. I meant a band of plastic that came around the box, it was on the two other kits I ordered via amazon, I assumed it was from factory since I only see scotch tape in retail

After assembly the only odd thing is some loose joints but my hyakuren is way worse in that regard

not the anon who made it, but he said in the last thread it used 2 primrose add on kits & 1 hrududu. Those add ons have got damn expensive, your looking at $90 usd for those 3 add-on kits alone on mandy (not including shipping), plus the base hazel kit, plus whatever he used for the arms (psycho gundam or zeong, not sure). As awesome as that custom is, it would be ridiculously expensive to do.
>>

The Eclipse HP-CS is the one you want for non-acrylics baka. It's completely plated metal, no o-rings. That means it won't degrade and lose seal when you're spraying something like lacquers.

Indeed those magazine parts get harder to come by. I was a bit shrewd a long time ago to snag a couple when they were more freely available. Noppin used to have more but I don't think they have them now. I'm getting some new stuff from taobao, but I don't have any experience with buying direct from china so I'll see how it goes.

There's always resin from e2046 to scratch that aoz itch, but unfortunately I'm too chicken to tackle the stuff until I figure out how to eliminate the risk.

How do I not get burned out on a kit? By the time I get to the weapons or sometimes even the heads I feel exhausted and don't want to build it anymore.
>>
>>6021497
Focus on building a part a day. Dont overdo it.

Dont make building a kit a "job" or "chore", there's a reason it's called a hobby.

Also, probably most important, dont keep a huge backlog. It discourages you to build because you never know what to build next so you procrastinate and end up not doing anything at all.
>>
>>6021497
Stop building for a year or so, then you'll get the feel again
>>
>>6021497

I had that problem a lot. What I do now is separate a kit into 2 stages. I prep, build & deseam a kit, then put it back in the box, I find i'm way more motivated to paint & shade & finish a kit if its at the stage of being ready to prime. recent kits ive prepped & assembled I leave near my desk so i play around with poses & work out where the paint rub would be in times where im waiting for something on the computer. It helped me get out of the apathetic rut, hope it helps you.
>>
>>6021502
>Also, probably most important, dont keep a huge backlog. It discourages you to build because you never know what to build next so you procrastinate and end up not doing anything at all.

Your almost right there, I have 700+ mecha kits and staring at several walls of kits you constantly second guess yourself on what to build next.

best advice i can give you is build the weapons first

they're the worst part so just get them out of the way

and that way if you dont finish the kit, you havent even completed the basic body, which is more of a driver to finish

>>
>>6021753

oh my bad because of the paint jar right next to it I thought it was painted black
>>
>>6021755
lel, that was for a basic size comparison. The plastic comes black.
>>
>>6021757

are you priming at all? if you are just painting white on top of black you are going to have a hell of a time trying to cover the black without making the paint thick as fuck
>>
>>6021758
Nope, what's priming?

This is my first Plamo kit so I'm pretty newfag at this.
>>
>>6021765

read the guide my man
>>
what do you guys do when you want to seam weld an area, but it has a jointed bit to it? for example; the gundam Astaroth's side skirts.
>>
>>6021772
I would probably use plastic cement along the sides, let that dry, and then use some putty
>>
>>6021772

just be careful with the cement, it will be fine if you are careful.
>>
>>6021766
Jesus christ, that is extensive.

So looks like I'll have to take another trip down to the hobby store tomorrow to get thinner and primer.

That'll be the third day in a row that I'm going there. This will be embarassing.
>>
>>6021791

they don't care, they want to sell stuff they don't mind if you're not a pro or whatever

get a can of tamiya fine surface primer, they may even have white primer which I would recommend for bright colors, put it under some warm water before you use it to increase the pressure a little and make it less viscous, it's really good stuff. Spray VERY lighty, try on pieces like runners you don't care about first.
>>
>>6021791
Remember that you don't need to screw up your kit testing paint, that what the left over runners are for
>>
>>6021791

it's extensive because people need help at different stages, you dont need to do everything, but you definitely need to prime and thin your paints
>>
>>6021797
Right, ok, got it. Will make note of this and try it out tomorrow.

>>6021800
Shit yeah, I keep forgetting about that. I'll try the primer and thinner out on those first until I achieve optimum results.

>>6021801
Yeah, I'm definitely not doing lots of stuff in the guide eg airbrushing and whatnot.

This is just so that I can get some decent Evangelion figs for non-rape prices. Even with the entry plug all fucked up and the blast shield looking pretty shitty I'm satisfied with the end product of the actual unit itself.
>>
>>6021791
Ask questions at the hobby store, assuming its a mom and pop one not hobby lobby. They will be more than happy to help you and steer you in the right direction.
>>
>>6021817
This is where things get difficult. I'm not really fluent in the local language (it's not english) so it makes it difficult for me to ask questions, especially more complex and specific stuff like this.
>>
>>6021779
>>6021782
oh okay, but how would i do when i want to paint something like that? just not seam weld the area?
>>
>>6021833
I would like to help, but that sentence doesn't make any sense.
>>
>>6021833
Looks like someone had a seizure while typing.
>>
>>6021836
>>6021839
Oh i'm sorry. I'm generally pretty bad at explaining things anyway, But like take astaroth's skirt armor, it has an obvious seamline there and it's also got a tiny jointed flap that is attached to it. I was curious how people go about painting those kinds of areas on figures. I apologize if that makes no sense.
>>
Where would you guys recommend for buying Plamo shit online in Asia?
>>
>>6021846
That makes more sense. There are a few ways of going about this. If you're going to paint that flap the same colour as the rest of the skirt, you could just leave the flap in when you seam weld. If you're painting it a different colour, you would probably paint the flap first, mask it, insert it into the skirt, and then seam weld the skirt. Of course, an alternative to both methods would be to paint the flap, do a c joint mod on the skirt where the flap would be inserted, seam weld and paint the skirt, and then insert the flat. My biggest concern with that would be not removing too much material doing a c joint mod, since the "joint" in this case has is fairly small, meaning you have a smaller margin of error
>>
>>6021858
Oh I see. Thanks a lot!
>>
>>6021858
>>6021862

>>
>>6022662
Not a fan of tool kits, you'll probably find extremely limited use for that battery powered sander, the knife is probably chinkshit and the nipper as well. Those jeweller files are also way too rough for nub removal.

How much are you willing to invest in the hobby?
>>
>>6022435
I already have Unit-00. They do have elbow joints (the arm comes as one rubbery piece and there is an elbow joint in the assembly) and I find the rest of the articulation to be quite alright. I want to get Unit-01 and 02 to finish the trio.
>>
>>6022680
Whatever works better than wire cutters and razor blades, which is what I'm using now. Bought my first two kits a couple of days ago.

If the toolkit isn't as useful as I'd thought it would be, I'll likely just buy the nippers I mentioned before as they come recommended in the guide, and an xacto knife set.

Was looking at $30-40 to get some stuff here sooner than later, but I'm open to suggestions in a higher range if they're really worth it. Just wanted to get some stuff here before I finished the kit I've been piecing together over the last few days.

How do I prevent acrylic paint from scratching off? I need to paint in a scratch-prone area and the paint always comes off.

>>

I honestly don't care if you don't resize it as long as it's clear, the worst is when it's a 4000x3000 pic and everything but the model is in focus
>>
>>6023573
kit looks good tho
>>
>>6023551
Acrylic paint tends to scratch off because it's so weak, so the best thing you can do is topcoat it for protection, and try not to scratch it. Otherwise perhaps sand down that scratch-prone area so pieces don't rub up against each other as bad, or try lacquer paint, which partially grips into the plastic and scratches less.
>>
>>6023576
Almost nobody has a monitor resolution higher than 2160p, so there's no benefit to making it 3000 pixels tall.
>>
>>6023585
Will giving the paint time to cure help, or does that not affect strength of the paint?
>>
>>6023589
It will help somewhat, but acrylics are still pretty thin regardless.

Primer and varnish.
>>
>>6023551
My dumb ass didn't know this until recently, but that can be fixed with properly priming the piece beforehand. And by properly, not just until the piece is a little grey or white, but a solid color of your primer. Allow for proper curing times of course. The difference in peeling from a properly primed and not properly primed kit was night and day and is worth the extra primer used.
>>
>>6023615
Right, so how do I use this primer. Spray, leave it to dry and then paint over?
>>
>>6023615
Just beware that if paint is already rubbing, adding too many paint layers may fuck up the tolerances and cause additional stress to the surrounding plastic.
>>
Not sure if I should ask here or the Pokemon general, how are the Pokemon plamo kits? Specifically Genesect.

i think a got a bit confused.
how do you guys thin acrylic paint? I'm using Windex and don't know why, just remembered that windex was use it for something, is it ok?
also what do you do with blem? do you also mixed with acrylic paint? what effect does it add?
>>
>>6023797
Which acrylic are you using? GW/vallejo stuff is ok with water, but most of the time I use mr color acrylic thinner
>>
>>6023807
just common art craft acrylic
>>
Anybody in Calgary know if there's any stores that sell this kinda stuff? Me and some buddies are going on a road trip up there and I'm thinking of picking myself up a couple 1/100 to start getting in to the hobby.
>>
>>6023812
Those aren't great for models. It's hard to get a good coat with them. I've never heard of anyone thinning with windex, I'm pretty sure they use it to strip acrylics though.

You'll want to either thin with water, the brand's acrylic thinner, or possibly even future (although I've only ever tried tried this, and seen this suggested, for vallejo).
>>
>>6023812
Like apple barrel and other walmart shit? Those $2 things? Those are fucking awful.

For those of you who use gundam markers to panel line, how do you get rid of the excess ink with precision? So far I've been scraping it off with my cutter which leaves scratch marks on the plastic, which is probably a bad idea. I know it can be rubbed off with solution but it's hard to wipe off only the excess. Or is there a thinner marker that you can recommend me?

How do you not get paint to pool at the edges of the masking tape and make the layers really obvious?
Thin less? Use better tape?
I'm already painting away from the tape
>>
>>6023844

tough to do with hand painting, this is actually an ok case where you can learn to wetsand paint with micromesh but you are going to learn a deft touch REAL fucking quick
>>
>>6023844
work backwards. paint the green first, let it set in. mask your sections off. paint your yellow.
>>
>>6023844
What kind of tape are you using?
>>
>>6023852

isn't that clearly what he did?
>>
>>6023851
I tried sanding with a really fine grit but I kinda scratched the green, wetting the sandpaper will make it better?
>>6023852
I painted the green first tho
Don't you mean doing the yellow first so I need less layers of green
>>
>>6023858

you need like micromesh or other very soft pads because its really easy to apply too much pressure with just paper. I would start at like 2000 at the lowest and go up to the 12k that micromesh come in

I mean the alternative is doing thinner coats and letting them dry more but then you run the risk of the paint hardening to the tape.

Thanks for the advice, I'll check my local hobby shops tomorrow
One is always out of everything and the other only sells warhammer brand stuff so I'll probably have to wait a few weeks for shipping

One last question, would I get better results with enamel paint?
>>
>>6023840
Rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip with some of the fluff removed (so there's not as much give and it doesn't go into lines as much) has been the best solution I've found. Markers don't seem to leave a very clean line from what I've seen, but then I fuck up washes too.

>>6023891

My opinion is citadel stuff is typically way overpriced for what you get, so you are right to be wary of it. Like some stuff isn't bad, but you can get equal or better stuff for less.

Enamels do stay wetter longer, but I'm not sure if that will be a big help to you. I typically like enamels for delicate masking work just because I can get clean lines by removing tape before its completely dry, but that's with an airbrush.

You are sort of stuck with waiting for coats to dry with hand painting, unfortunately. You might try mixing a (darker) version of your color with a white acrylic primer so you need less paint to fully block the color underneath. I use this trick when I need to do like a bright color detail on top of a dark color but I don't want to use too much paint OR have it transparent and the under color show through.

I don't know what your primer is, but since most are lacquer, spray in coats until it's all the uniform color of primer, let cure for an hour, paint your acrylics over it, cure that.

RX-78-2 original HG, or Revive? I want to try my hand at painting my favorite variant of the Gundam, but it is my first time painting models since way back in my Warhammer days.

>>
>>6023992
Personally, I'd get the 30th anniversary/starter kit 2 RX-78, but if it's between the two, go with the revive. If you want it to look more like the pic in the link, you could also kit bash it with the powered GM, but that would take some more serious modifications
>>
>>6023851
What's the difference with sanding with micromesh and those 6000-10000 grit sponges?
>>
>>6023844
Some people if they handpaint, they first paint the outlines of the patterns and work inward. And if you need to go fine with the tip, you kind of twist the brush as you load the paint onto the brush, from your palette.

Or you can try imitating Duncan Rhodes' hand movements for that.
>>
>>6023948
>>6023909

I've been trying to handbrush primer with Badger Stynylrez (to the consistency recommended by /tg/) and the finish is kind of okay but needs a bit of micromesh.

It's VERY hard to get coverage if you primer pitch black plastic, like on an Over Flag.

thanks! you cleared my confusion. i kinda know this acrylics suck, but still for the moment are the only one i got.

Finally went and got the courage to do a large portion of the brush painting. I have a few questions,

I got some bumps under the coat, could they be air bubbles or dust that I missed cleaning off? I don't remember seeing them on the primer. Could they be removed without too much fucking around?

My first coat looked great but as time when on the paint I guess gets dehydrated and thicker? As a result my last coat was a littler thicker with some brush marks kind of visible up close, I also mixed they paint so I couldn't achieve another mixture the same, (I tried a few times).

>little bumps, what are they and what can I do to fix/avoid?
>paint thickens over time, how to keep a proper thinned ratio?

Anything else noticeable? I realize I should've done the dark color last as well.
>>
>>6024497
>Anything else noticeable?

you got the lower legs reversed. The holes for the power cables should be facing outward, not inward.
>>
>>6024497

>>
>>6024506
Noticed that after, it'll get corrected anyway when I put the cables back in.

>>6024510
1-2 weeks roughly, I was sanding a bit earlier which could've caused it as well, I'll make sure to clean the parts better before I do the rest.

No fix for it? The camera made them a lot sharper than they are. The shield is the worst though, I might straight redo that one.
>>
>>6024526

It's typically not stuff on the surface (although it can be) but dust blown around by the airbrushing, or even falling onto the drying pieces
