For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

SD Group Build

Rules:
Pick up an SD anything, plane, Gundam/other MS, whatever, if it's generally an SD it counts (so I hope to see someone do a D-Style). Obviously, per all group builds, you'll want to paint it.

Submissions:
Email it to [email protected]
USE AN ACTIVE EMAIL ADDRESS

Due Date: November 1st

Good news! A kind anon has purchased some prizes for the group build. He has decided to do a random drawing rather than judge them like I did in the previous group build. Winners will be contacted via email.

For those curious, I intend to start the secret Santa signups on October 1st.
>>
Secret Santa

It's that time of year again. Just look at the form and fill it out. Signups last until December 1st, pairs go out in the days after that.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdprprkU_4UBARdot0ASSmoUoxghk9bOPVuRrvZKfghAZQRbg/viewform?c=0&w=1

A few things:
-Use an active email, I don't want to be hounding you and then have to repair someone.
-Use your full address, I don't know every damn city and zip code in the US.

A new option, Cards Only. If you pick this you're assumed to be willing to ship international (it's a card after all). It doesn't have to be a handmade card, just something nice. Of course handmade is nicest, but not everyone has the skills for it.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdprprkU_4UBARdot0ASSmoUoxghk9bOPVuRrvZKfghAZQRbg/viewform?c=0&w=1

As always, I'm available here, on IRC, or at [email protected].

how much bytes are in the cookies?
>>
>>5967376
Do you have any adblock, noscript, etc. installed?

If all else fails make an account. Most sites use cookies to track account sessions so you'll tell if cookies are a problem if you're forcibly logged out.
>>
>>5967379
Is it SCGMC?
>>
>>5967396
I've tried in FF and Chrome so far, it behaves the same in both browsers. My Chrome install is barebones so there shouldn't be any issues there, but I did turn off Adblock on FF to try again. No changes. The weird thing is that I do have an account and I'm signed in; I've managed to place one order before by I think just waiting until the site stopped being retarded.

I'm tempted to just snag what I need from Amazon; after Hobbywave's shipping the prices aren't that much more and I can get EVERYTHING I need in one expensive swoop so long as I switch to Mr. Topcoat rather than the Super Clear UV Cut I used previously.

Since a guy got a Hyakuren last thread, do we have any testimonials from other folks with Hyakurens? I've been eyeballing them but I haven't seen other complaints regarding hand grenade status.

Additionally, how's the OG HG Gogg? I like the Gogg, but knowing about the articulation and stickers makes me a little skeptical. How's Gunpla General feel about it?

I grabbed a Hyakuren when it first released and thought it was fairly sturdy, although I didn't really move it around much. However, the hands are garbage and like to pop open, especially if you try to make it hold it knuckle dusters. Also the sideskirts and its thigh and shoulder armor design limit articulation a bit,

Unless your kit is undergated, it's strongly NOT recommended. You'll end up with terrible unpainted nub points that you'll have to touch up like in that pic, so you might as well just take them off before spraying them.

I have a Y-Wing, A-Wing, Snowspeeder, X-Wing and an AT-ST. I havent touched them but I know for a fact that if you're going to rely on stickers, best not try at all.

Treat them like traditional kits. Pretend, for just a second, that you will need glue and paint for once in your life.

Also if you care what your family members think about your robot power level, you've already lost my boy.

>>
>>5967716
They probably won't allow me to do that in the store.
Would 100 m^3/hr be sufficient?
>>
>>5967718
That's a little bit on the low side, but some of the brand named spray booths (like Tamiya or Mr Hobby) are rated for about that much. For comparison, the 80-100$ chinese amazon one is rated for 240 m^3/hr, but then it's chinese so those numbers are probably an overestimation. 100 is probably about borderline.
>>
Alright, what's the key to mixing paints? I have some Tamiya German Grey (XF-63) and some white paint and I need the light grey for the Barbatos' Wrench Mace. I'm just not entirely sure how to get there with what I have.
>>
>>5967698
>What's the basic suction power of the fan needed for a DIY spray booth?

For a cross draft spray booth, the rule of thumb is 100 CFM face velocity. For a down draft spray booth, 100 CFM downward velocity past the operator and part.

But a fan's flow rate is NOT everything. A fan has to have not only sufficient flow rate, it also has to be able to move air with sufficient *pressure*.

Static pressure is the resistance to air flow within the system. Air filters, the type and length of ductwork, duct work fittings like elbows and one-way gates etc increase static pressure.

If your fan cannot overcome the static pressure in your spray booth system, your spray booth system isn't going to effectively remove the harmful paint vapours.

>>
>>5967794
Mold lines can be managed before removing a piece off the runner. Nubs are a little harder, unless you have good snipping discipline and can remove a piece with putting stress on the nub spot.

If you snip it correctly, nubs are fairly minimal and require very little management. The issue is having to hand paint the spray paint on those spots, as it leaves a slightly uneven finish

Backorder means that the item is not in stock, but is expected (not guaranteed) to be in stock again sometime in the foreseeable future. You can place the order now and then you'll get it when it comes back in. That may be in a few days, a few weeks, a few months, or you may eventually get an email that the item will never be restocked, although this usually doesn't happen.

Recurring joke where everyone mistakes him for char, even some animations where he showed up played the Char theme until he scream hes not Char. His original Ace title was Red Bliz but obviously it was too close so it was redone, and that explains why RB shows up on his Zaku very often.

Ridden: "Hey, I've heard of you. The White Wolf, right? Nice to meet you."

Matsunaga: "Oh, this is a pleasure. I didn't expect to meet with the famous Red Comet."

Ridden: "! I'm not the Red Comet; I'm the Crimson Lightning!"
Matsunaga: "Oh, I'm terribly sorry. Then, I'm counting on your support, Crimson Lightning Char Aznable."

Ridden: "... Forget it..."

Matsunaga: "Hm? What's wrong, Char?"

So is there a difference between the gashapon figures and the regular SD kits? Want to learn painting with them cause they're cheap and cute.
>>
>>5968588

Gasha figs are like less than half the height of an SD, so like way way less plastic. SD would be better to learn because the gacha figures are so small it actually becomes much harder to paint. This can be true with SDs also, but many have great parts separation now. If you are like just putting your first paint on a kit ever and have no idea what you're doing gacha would be fine I guess, but you may as well just practice on spoons or spare parts.

>Doesn't Future yellow out in three years?
Not to my knowledge. Some of the substitutes used in Europe may yellow, but the original product will not.

>Wouldn't adding Tamiya flat to Future, eat away underlying acrylic polyurethanes like Vallejo?
I don't know for sure, but I doubt it. You can paint Tamiya over Vallejo if you do it carefully enough (mist it with an airbrush), so I doubt the addition of a small amount of flat base, without extra thinner, to future will be enough to harm Vallejo paints (assuming you've given them time to cure, of course).

>Mr Hobby Top Coat is acrylic-based, right?
Yep.

It really depends what PGs you're comparing to. Like, certain recent MGs like the Sazabi ver. Ka are pretty much on par with older PGs, or maybe even a little better. In any case, my best recommendation is for the larger Koto Zoids--the size, parts count, and detail is pretty absurd. If you want to be absolutely blown the fuck away, track down a Gojulas. Here he is next to the PG RX-78.

>>
>>5969882
cost of kit+cost of tools
>>
>>5969882
Well, what are you looking to do? Depending on how deep you are into building little robots it can be relatively cheap.

If you just snapfit things it will be pretty cheap. You'd need good nippers, and a good hobby knife minimum, and everything else is extra on top of that. Most Gunpla in and of themselves are also relatively cheap, but this varies heavily by kit grade, age, etc.
>>
>>5969886

>>
>>5969905

>>
>>5969907
I was able to keep my Steam sale spending in check.

>>5969898
Also I own everything except the nippers.
>>
>>5969905
>Seriously, people said this shit is expensive?
It only gets expensive when you want to paint and mod your kits. A good airbrush set up will run you around $400 and a set of good paints, thinners, and safety equipment like a spraybooth and mask will cost another few hundred at least.

Still cheaper than a lot of things but it's a big cost to eat all at once to build plastic models.
>>
>>5969896
I was referring to kit age; some older kits that aren't reprinted by Bandai will become more expensive, especially if they are in-demand.

>>5969905
The HGUC vanilla Zaku II is a little older as a HGUC and so its engineering- that is, its articulations, how parts come together, etc., is weaker in some places. Anon is recommending the Origin Zakus because they are more recent and so are engineered differently.

IMO the vanilla HGUC Zaku II is a fine kit to start with. It's still quite decent for what it is.

If ever you want simple image reviews of Gunpla, check dalong.net. It's very simple to navigate and most everything you need to know is told by the images.

If it's cheap and you can get the tools you need whilst already having others, then you can go for it as you so wish. Just remember to shave your nubs.

Do take note that another thing you might want is a very very fine marker or set of fine Gunpla markers for panel lining. This is when you take a marker and use it to trace along certain surfaces of the model to get details to stand out more. You can check the OP guide for more information about this as well as many other things.

I don't know, I like the Zaku IIs rifle better than Char's too.

Plus how better to emulate the animation of 0079 than an old kit right?

Ten bucks for decent nippers, ten bucks for a decent x-acto knife, 3-8 bucks per color of paint, 5-20 bucks for lining pens/inkwashes, 5-10 bucks for topcoat, maybe five bucks for sandpaper, another five for cement.

If you want to airbrush shit instead of hand brushing or using rattlecans, expect costs to increase pretty significantly.

How on earth do you parts separate the visor to paint and seam weld the head, if the 1/144 GM Quel's head is engineered like this?
>>
>>5970073
Your going pretty deep down the rabbit hole there, especially with hand painting. Still, it's worth considering.
>>
>>5970381
Quel is love. Titans are life.
>>
>>5970405
Yeah but I'm trying to set up for painting here. The Quel's head is differently-engineered from the GM Custom, and instead, is more similarly setup to the GM Cold Climate.

I'm not 100% confident in being able to totally mask off the visor if I assemble it normally.

I can't tell which of two parts are the visor, but you're just gonna have to be creative. When I was working on my MG Ground and Ez8, I had to cut out parts and pegs to slide the visors in and glue them after seamwelding the head halves together. Think of it like a good excuse to get better and taking the next extra step. Without having that model, it looks like you might have to cut out the mask portion? Take that part with a grain of salt so just look at what you can do and work it out in your head.

>>
>>5970464
C-jointing is when you cut the bottom or side of a female peg (the hole the peg goes into) so you can slide the peg in sideways rather than place the peg into the hole from the top. It's for painting when you need to disassemble parts, and it's generally more common for older kits when peg on shoulder armor was common.

They sell the same compressor by itself for $159. It is kinda shit (only 0.8CFM) but will suffice for now. You can go ahead and buy it.

The rest is literal garbage and it most certainly doesn't cost 229-159 = $70.

You can get an airbrush like that for ~$20 from Aliexpress and the hose for ~$5, but you might want to consider a brand name airbrush (which may well cost you more than $70 but at least you wouldn't be paying $70 for trash).

When I'm shading switching colors back and forth is a pain so I use two at a time (each loaded with different color).

As for nozzles, I have 0.5 for extra large pieces, 0.4 (single action) for priming etc, two 0.3 and two 0.2.

I also have a couple of shitty chinese ones for craft acrylics but those don't count.

If you're going to only ever get one good brush, get a 0.2.

You can wing 0.3+ with semi-decent chinese ones, but good 0.2 needs precision machining and that costs money.

The decency of chinese airbrushes is a matter of random chance however.
>>
>>5970983
>If you're going to only ever get one good brush, get a 0.2.

Serious question, how often do you actually *need* the 0.2 nozzle on the brush? A 0.35mm eclipse can already pull off medium thickness pencil lines. How often is it that you need finer details than that on gunpla?
>>
>>5970984
>A 0.35mm eclipse can already pull off medium thickness pencil lines
Yeah, but at what distance? Also, not all paints are the same.

I do most of my shading with 0.2, also fixing fuckups, chips, scratches without having to mask everything is pretty handy.
>>
>>5970989
>I do most of my shading with 0.2, also fixing fuckups, chips, scratches without having to mask everything is pretty handy.
Well, I do agree that it sounds convenient. No argument there. But if an anon was only going to get one brush, would you really still recommend the 0.2? Since 0.2 are much less suitable for tasks like priming or large coverage, that would mean he has to get another one right off the bat. I get that he can get a chinese one for that (though I'm not sure I'd recommend that), but that's still a larger investment.

>>
>>5970991
Assuming that by melting the sprue you mean with lacquer thinner and not with heat, then what you're essentially doing is creating putty. So yeah, cutting out the part and then puttying it would work, but you'd need to paint afterwards anyway, so as >>5970994 said there's really no point.
