that word is too vague to use as a description. at this points its either a catch all term for any macabre creature or just a fucking zombie

Goblin has already been done and do you really want another witch or vampire? And how is a posessed skeleton different from a regular skeleton in terms of appearance?

And what do you mean by Candy Monster?

Toy maker here. Would you guys like a building system that uses steel fasteners instead of plastic ones? Still nice, shiny plastic parts, just strong steel instead of plastic connectors. Does that sound appealing?

>>5945945
So Meccano?
>>
>>5945945
Sounds like it would wreck the plastic parts
>>
>>5945949
>>5945950
Bigger, thicker parts. Like ones that fit in the palm of your hand. They won't break, trust me -- you can stack the scaffolding for as long as they make screws -- theoretically infinity. Meaning you can make prisms/platforms that you can stand on (tested myself, 180 lbs)

I haven't made a mechanical/robotics interface with it yet, but that will be coming in the future. The biggest push will be with aerial RC.
>>
>>5945959
Sounds neat. Got any proof of concept you can share?

Okay fine, no need to criticize.
I did this list while sifting through my Magic cards, so I drew some inspiration from that.

1. Ghoul I was thinking kind of like the one in pic related, but possibly more ghostly, with tattered cloth and gaping mouth. Ghouls I always thought of as smarter than zombies. More like an ugly, starved creature rather than actually undead.

Witch is meh, just something that is less of a mainstream witch. Maybe closer to a sorceress.

2. Vampire I want something royal looking, but also with facial markings like pic related, kind of like a cultist. Alternatively, a bat creature, like a Vampire Lord in Skyrim.

Posessed skeleton could have glowing eyes and be wearing a new mold that could represent broken and banged up armor. Maybe a cloth around his legs too, or one of those ninjago skeleton legs, but with the boot part in silver/gunmetal, assuming that leg and the regular skeleton leg are the same length. Holding and ax too.

3. Pic related

4. Like Devil Boy from the current series, just dressed as something else. Hopefully new molds with useful pieces, like was the case with Devil Boy's wings and tail.
>>
>>5945976
Devil Kid's (official name is Imp) wings are just the Gargoyle CMF wings in red.

Uh, yeah. Fuck.
I got swept up in the starwars thing on legos site and impulsively bought some stuff.
I asked wich set i should buy a few threads back but didn't really get any replies. So when the action came to an end (the free stormtroopers were already gone) i just said whatever and bought Rey's floating chocolate fudgesicle and the new starwars imperial hovertank.

But after checking Jangs reviews i think i might've made a poor decision. The set isn't here yet so maybe i'll like it more when i get my hands on it, but it really does look a bit boring build and parts-wise now that i look at it. The industrial no-nonsense design is up my alley, but some of the gaps are a bit lazy looking.
I do think its cool it fits two figures snuggly and the orange container is really neat and actually opens and stores stuff.

But whatever, the pieces are very basic and versatile and it might be fun to mod the thing into something better and more exciting.(i've wanted to make a tank for some time now) The minifigs i can maybe sell later.

Don't open it and initiate a return. If you have a Lego store near you, you can return it there. For the hovertank, I would regardless, since I guarantee you Amazon will have that significantly cheaper in a few months if you decide you want it later.

>>5946691
I wouldn't wait for it - the one from 2014 sold out before November, and I never managed to find one at retail, much less clearance.

My Permanent Roommate and I have tried to make it a tradition, but we had to do without that year. :(

On a related note, anyone have an extra Festive Astromech they'd be willing to part with?

1x1 and 1x2 tiles, and cheese slopes. Fucking cheese slopes CONSTANTLY.

Also don't forget how all standard bricks now have easily visible seams on the sides and top and the walls are even thinner and the production tolerances are lower.

>>
>>5946797
Speaking of Ideas, when do they announce the next one? There was this cool Spaceballs-set that made it to the review.

But Lego seems to be really pumping these out. Caterham was just released, and there's like 3 more sets announced already
>>
>>5946811
Nearest Lego store is like 40 minutes away in the PDX area.

>>5946812
Was at the ER yesterday with a hemoglobin level of 7.8 grams/deciliter, with the consultation of three doctors we decided it would be alright for me to go home. They think it's from chronic blood loss over time from a hemorrhoid, but they're concerned something else is bleeding that I'm not realizing.

Taking iron supplements now, haven't eaten breakfast yet but I'm gonna have a couple eggs since they're high in iron. I prefer to feed myself quality food, but I'm not a big steak eater. Maybe if I can have someone get to the grocery for me, I can make some beef stew and have a decent supply of that to eat over a few days.

Hoping I'll bounce back and it really was just bleeding from muh anus like a moron, but a colonoscopy might reveal some potentially serious shit like colon cancer.

>>5946817
I'm not sure, sometimes the review process takes a long time. They approve a lot of sets for reviewal and end up not producing them.

I see these every year and think they're a waste, but now for some reason I kind of want to try one.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I feel like I'm starting to lose the Christmas spirit and doing something fresh might light it back up.

Although the mini ships seem cool and the silver droid and white wookie seem like a cool bonus, I might go for the city set because Santa and Husky.

What's it like working in their call center? Just wondering: I've worked in credit card centers (one associated with Sears, particularly) for way too long.

>>
>>5947047
I work in a grocery store, Indian people always complain the product on the shelf is not fresh enough and want newer from the back, even if the shelf was just stocked. Usually they're pretty nice about it but it's still annoying.

To make this post Lego related, anyone ever have problems with these spring shooters before? The right one on my hovertank won't lock the bolt in place unless I pull the bolt head down, while the left one is totally fine. I've never had these parts act up like this and I know I built the set correctly.
>>
>>5947047
It's not that bad honestly, very few calls, almost no black people (those are the worst online guests), pretty much white girls and soccer moms who order furniture and clothing who are usually nice or at least tolerable. Indians speak funny and are always mad, latinos are neutral and other asians are patient. We're located at Sonora Mexico.
>>
>>5947032
couldn't you just google "where is my pants dude" instead?
>>
>>5947066
Located in Mexico? Interesting. I would assume you'd get people insisting on talking to US agents all day. I get a lot of transfers from coworkers in the Philipines and Guatamala like that.

Strangely, my black customers are pretty neutral, and even arabs aren't too bad. Where I used to work, asians were up there with Indians, but where I am now they're pretty low key. Of course, every group has its bad ones, of course, but some cultures seem to be more prone to aggression, hostility and boundary-pushing than others.

In order to make this Lego related: I just ordered $45 worth of minifigs on Aliexpress, which surprises me. I never thought I'd be that much of a collector, but there were certain super heroes I had to have (baby Galactus is adorable!) and I was amazed to find a six-set of modern Ultraman minifigs.

Rofl, that isn't what happened at all. The orange brick separator is simply the default color Lego chose for it, and existed prior to the green one. It exists in green for the Cinema because of the movie posters and in the Horizon Express for contrast.

It actually is, not because it as green, it was the old style one it used to be gray. So they made it stand out. Gray was default and people hated, orange was to make it visible and green like you said for special reasons.

Hey /lg/, I'm new to both here and /toy/ in general but I still have some questions after reading through the FAQ.

When I was a bit younger I received the Cafe Corner set (10182-1) and built it. I really liked it but eventually I grew older and it sat on my shelf and collected dust.

Just today I had the weird urge to build a giant Lego set, but they all seem to have drastically increased in price (everything seems to have gone up a price notch. $7 sets are now $15. $40 sets are not $60, etc). I suppose that's just the nature of the beast, but I was also trying to find some of the other sets in the same "series" as Cafe Corner. I remember being a kid and debating if I wanted Cafe Corner or Green Grocer. So I went to try and shop for Green Grocer and I can't find it for less than $1,000. What gives? I'm not familiar with toy secondary markets but do these things really shoot up in value that fast?

I suppose I would be fine buying a set without the box, or instructions (I am assuming I can find them online), but even used sets are still hundreds and hundreds of dollars for what was originally a ~$120 set. Do these not depreciate once opened?

tl;dr I want to buy Green Grocer (10185-1) but it's really expensive. What are my options? Should I give it up or is it possible to buy all the parts individually for cheaper?
>>
>>5948898
Is that some frigging Montoya?

FUUUUUUCK YESSSSSS
>>
>>5949095
IIRC Lego appreciates faster than gold
And limited, AFOL-centric releases like the modular sets skyrocket in price.
Your options are used (incomplete sets are marked down a good amount even if its easily replaceable parts) or if you want to be a sinner, cheaper knock offs
>>
>>5949069
>>5948900
It looks styled off of the movie, so probably going for silly
>>
>>5948900
>Batman in the middle actually has the same color swim shorts as Batman in the surfing episode of the Adam West show
>>
>>5949103
Yeah I looked at the used options and still wasn't really impressed. If I did become a sinner, aren't the Chinese knock-offs an actual harm to your health? Toxic plastic and whatnot? The only rip-off brand I know is Lepin.

And what about rebuilding the set using individual parts? I would imagine this comes out to a higher cost than the set would have cost originally, but I think in this case it might be worth it.

>>5949116
Many people on Eurobricks did get the pieces individually from Bricklink. I think there is not that much of a price difference between Bricklinking the set or getting it used, I think it's 300/400$.

Another option to drive down the price would be bricklinking the pieces but substituting pieces of other colors. Like making the sandgreen parts normal green or blue would drive down the cost by a noticeable margin because sand green is rather rare.

Discontinued stuff goes up in value fast. Boxed is obviously the most increased price, but AFOLs don't sell sets they have on display, so there's like none around compared to how many people want one (ie: anyone just getting in to Lego) either used or new or as-new or whatever. Piecing together a whole from a partial set or two can be fun and cheaper than buying a single complete used set, have you heard of bricklink.com?
That line of big & fancy sets is the 'modular building' line, so maybe look at the ones currently available and see if you like any of those.

>>
>>5949394
Yeah I've looked at the new ones and the bank seems okay, but something about the Green Grocers just really appeals to me. I think it's the black roof and the protruding tower.

I'm, actually using Bricklink.com right now. The cheapest option is $700 which is way out of my price range. Even the $140 for a new set is pushing it. At this point the only option I'd take is to buy like some crappy 50% set and fill in the rest myself.

>>
>>5949438
I do think that's going to go up (no reason for it not to), but the good news is enough of those get made that there will be clearance sales on them from at least some stores, so even if you don't see it on sale then a bunch of someones with a BL store will. It's not at an AFOLs-only price point (like the way the modulars are priced, or even trains) or theme (the only AFOL MOCs using obviously-Ninjago sets are obviously starting with 2x70751), so the rate of increase is unlikely to be as quick as dead Modulars. And being a kids-show line, in 3 years you'll be able to spot all the important parts to it in ebay listings of bulk used Lego posted by people entering their dark ages.

>>5949444
What I did for piecing together Cafe Corner was lurk ebay, buying two partials that got me about 90% of the way, than bricklink the last bit (fuck you brick-built awning canopies). >>

1/2

Alright, listen up youngins, here's a brief history lesson on collecting Lego about 10 years ago from someone who was actively collecting and why sets like Green Grocer/Cafe Corner are so damn expensive today. This is beyond the basic "people like them, so the price went up" logic, because while that's true, it's a bit more complicated than that.

Lego used to be way cheaper 10 years ago. And I don't mean that sets are more expensive today because of inflation/the mouse tax, because that stuff existed back then. Go to brickset and just look at the MSRP of prices from around 2006, specifically the larger sets. You'll notice that most normal large sets that you'll find in your average store max out at either $89.99 or $99.99. Star Wars sets that would easily be priced at $120 today are $90. Even UCS sets, like the UCS AT-ST and Vader's Tie are $99.99 or lower.

So in 2007, a little set called Cafe Corer is released, MSRP of $139.99, which was kinda seen as insane at the time. When you have large sets that max out at $100, a $150 set is pushing it. That kind of money is still quite a bit today, but when you have some city sets (like the recent volcano one, 60125) that are MSRP of 150, suddenly spending that much money on a modular building doesn't seem so bad. There were no Avenger helicarriers or Ghostbuster fire houses or Death stars that retail for over $300 sitting around. I remember buying the Green Grocer in at a Lego store and the cashier said to me "That's such a nice set, but I can't justify spending that much money on a single set". That kind of mentality was pretty common back then.
>>
>>5949525

2/2

In addition, Cafe Corner and the Green Grocer were some of the first sets that specifically target AFOLs. There really is no play value with the early modular sets. Essentially, at their most basic level, the Cafe Corner is what you would get if you took a baseplate, built a 4x4 stud wall around it and called it a day. The inside is absolutely barren. I used to store city cars and motorcycles in there because there was so much space. The Green Grocer was similar, but instead had the bottom floor (the grocer part) with detail and the other two floors were essentially empty. But they had novel building techniques and a display presence second to none, so they became popular.

The sets that I mentioned earlier, such as the helicarrier, only exist today because sets like the Cafe Corner and Green Grocer set a precedent that AFOLs will in fact spend huge amounts of money on well detailed sets. You can also see why the infamous 10179 UCS Millennium Falcon, released in 2007 with an MSRP of $500, commands the excessive prices it does today.

Longer than I expected, but I was bored.

Brickficiency has a lot of really cool features for people who do a lot of building in ldd (for example when you upload and .ldd file it'll tell you which parts do/don't exist in the colors you've used, if the parts you've used are rare/expensive, you can also export the parts list as a html file to upload all of the pieces to a bircklink wanted list).

Unfortunately, all of those features require registering an account on their site, even though there's no real reason that they need to be behind and account registration wall. It's just annoying is all.

On non-licensed sets, i really don't like the white glint on the eyes and the shape of eyebrows, they're just kinda creepy.

By contrast, Emmett's and Benny's faces are a perfect compromise between the old plain face and alternate expressions, i wish they went with that design for everyone.

Generally speaking, i think Lego is exaggerating with details, both in minifig prints and new moulds; i wish they'd dial it down a bit and streamline the designs a bit

Shut the fuck up. I'm so tired of being disrespected on this goddamn website. All I wanted to do was post my opinion. MY OPINION. But no, you little bastards think it's "hilarious" to mock those with good opinions. My opinion. while not absolute, is definitely worth the respect to formulate an ACTUAL FUCKING RESPONSE AND NOT JUST A SHORT MEME OF A REPLY. I've been on this site for 4 years: 4 YEARS and I have never felt this wronged. It boils me up that I could spend so much time thinking and putting effort into things while you shits sit around (probably jerking off to waifigs or whatever degeneracy you like) and make fun of the intellectuals of this world. I've bored you? Good for fucking you. Literally no one cares that your little brain is to underdeveloped and rotted to comprehend my idea...MY GREAT GREAT IDEA. I could sit here all day whining, but I won't. I'm NOT a whiner. I'm a realist and an intellectual. I know when to call it quits and to leave the babybrains to themselves. I'm done with this goddamn site and you goddamn immature children. I have lived my life up until this point having to deal with memesters and idiots like you. I know how you work. I know that you all think you're
"epik trolls" but you're not. You think you baited me? NAH. I've never taken any bait. This is my 100% real opinion divorced from anger. I'm calm, I'm serene. I LAUGH when people imply I'm intellectually low enough to take bait. I always choose to reply just to spite you. I won. I've always won. Losing is not in my skillset. So you're probably gonna reply "lol epik trolled" or "u mad bro" but once you've done that you've shown me I've won. I've tricked the trickster and conquered memery. I live everyday growing stronger to fight you plebs and low level trolls who are probably 11 (baby, you gotta be 18 to use 4chan). But whatever, I digress. It's just fucking annoying that I'm never taken serious on this site, goddamn.

I don't know man.
That weird in-between era spawned both really great faces and abominations. I respect that they tried out a bunch of different styles and levels of exeggeration. I agree they like a certain amount of polish and homegenity, but personally i think they had an overabundance in charm. (pic related)

What i like about the current style of faces is the abundance of different female faces and the bigger variety of more different expressive faces within a consistent style.
But the current selection of more generic and cutesy faces often look very unnattractive to me. They are too detailed, but at the same time they feel too juniorized and lack in character. The more abstract classic faces from the 80's were also cutesy, but imo had a more elegant design and that left some room for projection and different interpretations.

coincidentally this is a great way to sort your pieces. Anytime you build something from your giant box, you're not going to use 100% of the pieces you pull out. Once the thing is built (or not) you have a pile of pieces that you thought you might use. Instead of throwing them back in, take the time to sort them into bags. You can supplement this with a dedicated sorting session if you like.

One thing that I don't see mentioned that often is that the simple act of finding pieces from a giant bin in order to build something is a sorting method. Over time, if all you do is take pieces out of one bin and put them into another, the second bin will have your favorite pieces in it.
>>
>>5951544
I did that once, as a kid. I sorted ALL my gray and black pieces into one bin to use in building starfighters and left every other colour in the huge bin.

depends on the size of your collection and how you think

but if I had to recommend one, here goes. The general principle is to sort into broad categories, and only split the containers when you have enough pieces to justify it. So keep all the plates together, UNTIL you have a lot of small plates, UNTIL you have enough 2x2 plates, UNTIL you have enough white 2x2 plates. IMO the optimal size for one container is about a ziploc bag full, but you can go with a gallon-sized showbox. The key thing is you want to be able to see all the pieces simultaneously, so a shallow box is better if you choose a box.

First sort by SIZE. I'm serious, simply doing this will reduce the sifting you have to do, because big plates etc aren't blocking your view of tiny pieces. I would roughly sort into bins full of parts that are all smaller than:
>1x2 brick
>2x4 brick
>4x4 plate
>big shit

Then by broad piece categories. You can do this step first, but I do recommend taking out all the huge pieces and the tiny pieces.
>plates
>bricks
>curves
>slopes
>minifigs
>greebles
>misc

Then by individual part, if you have enough of one part to warrant it.

Then by color last, if you have a lot of one color.
>>
>>5951567
Thanks, I'll think about it. I have like 45 Lego sets displayed currently and one MOC, most of which are Star Wars so you'd better believe I have enough gray bricks to warrant segregation.
Also about 7 or 8 sets broken more or less into pieces in boxes around me. And I need to get rid of a few more if I wanna display my favorite Rogue One sets.

>>5949544
New AFOLs have the money so when they get back in to Lego, they get to impulse buy what they want (ie: the big fancy city sets that aren't copshops, or the nostalgia sets they had/wanted as kids). This new-AFOL demand will always outstrip supply of available popular high-original-cost sets. The sets that don't go up aren't sought after by as many as stockpiled them on clearance (you've seen some Lego youtuber buy 19 of something just because it was on clearance price, right? there's never 19 modulars or trains on clearance).

>>5949517
>If theres any lesson I've learned, its to just buy the sets if you want them and have the money.
That's pretty much all you can do.

>>5949531
>sets like the Cafe Corner and Green Grocer set a precedent that AFOLs will in fact spend huge amounts of money on well detailed sets
Yes, and there's more new AFOLs all the time, which is why the decade-old modular sets are among the most-increased in price sets since then. It doesn't matter which specific set drove up the price of the top Lego set (or, put another way, drove down the price-per-part value across all Lego sets), that was going to happen one way or another.
>novel building techniques and a display presence second to none, so they became popular.
So *good* sets got bought?

FWIW I think you're totally skipping the other AFOL-targeted lines of trains and big-ass Technics (well out of the range of kid-buy), and Architecture (not only no kid-buy in there, but they're made of the opposite of play features).

>Lego used to be way cheaper 10 years ago. And I don't mean that sets are more expensive today because of inflation/the mouse tax, because that stuff existed back then.
Inflation exists in and across the world every year at about 2% per. To use your example:
>Star Wars sets that would easily be priced at $120 today are $90.
The new one, inflation-adjusted, is cheaper.
>>
is anybody up for some reverse engineering?
it's quite the challenge, maybe because I suck
>>
>>5951572
One other method I've seen, if you have a lot of sets, is to save each set in the box it came in. Then if you need a part, search bricklink (or remember) for which set of yours it came in, and loot that set. It doeesn't make that much sense to me, but I guess it could be easier than sorting every set after you dissassemble it.

Unfortunately I burned the boxes because they were taking so much space and I thought "I bought these for myself not to resell".
I kind of do that currently, though. If I find that I'm short a brick on a set I bought used on bricklink or need a brick for something, I search for that brick on bricklink and check if I have that brick in any of my sets and if I'm willing to destroy that set for bits.

the really nice high-end sets sell mostly to nerds like us who keep them forever, so the used prices haven't really dropped. If you part it out, the price does go from being $stupid to merely way too much and an annoying time investment.. If you want a sick building like that, the currently-in-print members of the same series are mostly 150 or 160 retail price. Pet shop, detective's office, parisian restaurant, palace cinema, the brick bank. all still actually exist and you can buy them from people who aren't resellers.

the prices have gone up across the board because the sets have mostly gotten more complicated across the board. the price per piece is about the same across a lot of the themes, they've just kind of removed the option of buying simple things in some places.
