I was at Target yesterday and I'm surprised that I found the Birthday Bash Cedar, however, she very much smells like an old school Strawberry Shortcake doll, and I'm not so sure how I feel about that despite how pretty she is.

The earlier releases of Frankie and Draculaura with no joints were tests to see if this would actually sell well with the target audience. It must have, because this revamp is clearly going forward full steam.

This is what i am asking - mostly cause in a lot of the stores i have gone to this Christmas season - a lot of the Monster High stuff has been picked over or bought. On sale items have definitely been taken - my toysrus was missing about 90 percent of their dolls.
EAH on the other hand had a bit left over - so have Bratz (Bratz seemed to have a 50 percent off sale going on almost all their dolls at any one time.) and that new science girl's thing.
I went the days coming up to Christmas - and i thought that things were moving smoothly - and i live in a very low income area.

It's *because* MH sells well that they're trying to expand its audience. They want to hook the younger kids in, because parents have the buying power. If they can make MH cuter and more appealing to little girls, and less scary to the parents, they have the potential to overtake the DP revenue that they lost.

It blows, but adult collectors are a drop in the ocean compared to the cash cow of younger kids.

My TRU after Christmas had their entire MH and EAH section wiped. Aside from a few giant Maddies, one School Spirit 2-pack, and some Gloom 'n Bloom dolls, it was empty as fuck.

I managed to snag the Rochelle/Garrote pack at TRU For 30% off today. Mannnn this reboot got me sweating. I have so much left I want to collect and so little time before the G1 dolls start getting scalped to hell and back. Or even more than some already are.

They've announced Ari, who is basically Spectra's clone, but a popstar with lighter shades of purple and a less-threatening face. At the same time, Spectra's nowhere to be seen in the leaks.

Same goes for Moanica. Everyone thought she was going to be Ghoulia's big sister, but Ghoulia isn't anywhere to be found in these new leaks. In the 2Pack for Moanica's release, she's paired with Draculaura.

It's all speculation right now, but it doesn't look good for Spectra at the very least. Ari is a smilier, less cheek-bony version of her with a built-in singing gimmick.

Well it's totally unscientific, but the threads in /co/ also have been totally dead in the last months. I remember how in 2012-ish there were some "so how about them monster highs" threads that died within a dozen posts, then in 2013-14 there were some ongoing generals and not it's back to being dead.

And of course here in /toy/ threads only lasted a week before reaching post limit and not a month, like they have recently.

I'm so upset. My first doll was Dawn of the Dance Ghoulia and kept on collecting the dolls ever since.
I must have about 80 dolls by now and even though this year I haven't bought any doll cause I wasn't feeling the new lines, I was hoping they'd eventually become as cool as before again.

The tube top, I tried out on Bloodgood because she's hard to get other stuff to fit, and it doesn't fit her bust as snug as on Kala. Mattel didn't lose DP until last year. EAH debuted well before that.

Their official statement (reposted in a few articles about the subject was that they didn't pay enough attention to Disney's needs, while trying to produce EAH at the same time, and that's how they lost the line to Hasbro. Yeah. Some people in the higher ranks either resigned or were sacked last year when they lost the DP license. EAH started coming out in 2013, a few months before Frozen hit.

Apparently, even though Frozen was a huge hit, Disney felt that Mattel didn't have enough Disney Princess tie-in with the movie to promote more sales or something? That was the beginning of it. And it continued from there. Part of it is that the DP line was apparently a major pain in the ass in terms of how Disney wanted it handled (every princess has her own colour dress, none of the princesses can look at/interact with one another or it cheapens their individual story, and some other weird restrictions). Basically, Hasbro won the brand by pitching the opposite handling: let the princesses be friends, give them each their own distinct, but not-colour limited wardrobe, and produce more of the minority princesses that Mattel didn' feel would sell well.

MH saw a dip in sales this year. The numbers aren't out yet as to how big of a dip, but it must have been significant enough that they feel a need to change it.

They also need to fill the gap that losing DP left. MH is a more appropriate choice to modify (financially) than EAH, because EAH barely makes a profit, and MH is more easily recognised.

I want to say yes, but I highly doubt it. Usually they have characters that are one time only (the ghosts, the fusions, Whisp, Kieran) but some characters from the movies (Elissabat, Gigi, Viperine, etc) are featured as actual additional characters/dolls. I think Lorna and Marisol have the same theme in that they're only really supposed to be exchange students but I guess anything is possible.

I'm just posting up progress, I'm still working on the tights for Courtly, but I need to get some clear thread. But I just switched head and hands onto a deheaded Maddie doll. They work perfectly! But just switching their bodies makes the doll look so much better all ready. Not too sure if I'll cut her hair or not, but I intend to grab an original one in the box to keep so maybe I will.

Different anon here, but the MH aisle in most of my local stores is basically about the same size as ever. Target's is getting bigger, with my local one devoting two endcaps to the Frightfully Tall dolls (tall boxes) and Gooliope. The EAH section is getting slowly taken over by Bratz and Descendants in TRU, Big W and Target.

Kmart seems like the only store that has shrunk their MH section recently.

Unfortunately, I will concede one point: día de reyes is a tradition on the decline. There are children who still enjoy having both, Christmas and día de reyes gifts, but for the parents is kind of expensive, and because marketing the coca-cola fat pet is gaining territory and fewer families celebrate the dia de reyes each year with gifts. Most families only eat rosca.

However, in many parts is still a very important date for toy companies, and even some chains not focused on toys, like wal mart, remain open all night so the parents can take the children to the bed, go and buy gifts and place them during the night so when the children wake up, they find them. Fuck, I remember some years ago a governmental office ran a short-lived campaign to made the parents aware the proper gifts for día de reyes are toys, not clothes or something else. Think on what a children wants, not what an adult needs.

Hello, long time no speak. My custom rock golem girl finally has a face. It's the first faceup i've ever done, so i know it's not great but all things considered I'm pretty happy with it. She's nearly done now. She just needs a shirt and I'm deciding on whether I'm going to set her hair permanently up in a death hawk.

I bought some nylon hair from dollyhair.com in three different colours: sour apple martini, envy, poison ivy. It's quite nice to the touch too, I'm going to buy some more for my next custom.

Yeah I'm back. My partner and I got "divorced" last year, and I moved back in with my mum. Fuuuunnnnn tiiiimmmes.
Yes I'm in QLD. Rocksie's body and head and repainted with a binyl & fabric spray paint from Super Cheap auto. The brand is dupli-color and is stocked in the spray paint cabinet at the back of the shop. It comes in some kind of drab colours, but there might be a nice gold. Chipping, yes there has been a tiny bit of that on her moving parts. But I did the best I could to spray her parts separately and with the pegs in different positions to try and minimise the damage. I followed up with 1 coat of Mr super clear, and an extra 2 coats of it after her face was painted in acrylics.
I didn't actually prime the ice girl CAM parts. The finish on those is pretty toothy and holds the vinyl paint well. I recommend 2 coats, not too heavy, and it won't be too thick them.

Oh and with the shirt, I am making her a white singlet, but it's going to go down to her pelvis. I'm going for a skinhead/punk sort of look, but it's a tight singlet so you'll hopefully be able to see her torso through it still (like her tights!). And her guns will be out so you'll be able to see it in her arms.

Thanks for the tips on the paint. I found one at Bunnings that is okay for "vinyl and most plastic" in gold and silver. I'll probably prime the body just to be safe with dupli-color though.

New to the fandom here.
I like drawing and I'm considering getting some old dolls for custom painting.
Would it be a good artsy business to try to sell them if they turn out well? I've seen good and very bad customs, so I'd say I have my quality standards high.

It definitely could be a good business. I've seen some poorly done customs sell for over $100, and amazing ones sell for more. A good way to get started/get noticed is to do characters people know.

Pic related sold for $122 with 10 for shipping, it is a really well done custom, and being a tiny horse helped it sell.

While it's a good thing that you're using thrift store MH dolls, be advised that no matter how good of a artist you are, you're going to fuck up your first, second, third, and most likely your fourth attempts at faceups. If you keep at it for about a year, doing at least one faceup a month, your skills should be mature enough that someone will buy one of your customs.

Even so, you shouldn't quit your day job. It's alot of hard, eye straining work for little pay. And your customers will be picky woman-childs who often fail at understanding why they should pay you what you ask for in an timely fashion.

Quality standards are debatable. Plenty of people have professional customized dolls that are a hot mess. Pic related. While it's a good faceup on a technical level, who the fuck wants a Derpinstein doll?

The show Life in the Dreamhouse isn't cancelled. They just ended a season in September. The episode schedule is always kind of random with breaks that don't fit much of a pattern. Sometimes they stop episodes in December and restart in February, once they had only 1-2 episodes a month from April to December, then didn't come back until April, etc.
