Played a game at my lgs last night with each of the precons and I gotta say, it was the most fun I've had playing a commander game in a very long time. All the decks feel very balanced with each other and play well out of the box. The problem now us deciding what decks to upgrade

Not sure if I should get one or not. Wizards with upgrades seems like fun, but I'm not sure which commander I'd use, and I want to try something outside of Grixis colors (which is very unusual for me).

It was looking pretty good for casual play, with both the tribal staples like Gravespawn Sovereign and some personal notes that I could support, but two things occurred to me

First, and more minor, replace Perpetual timepiece with Embalmer's tools RIGHT NOW.

Second... FFS you need more mana. 31 lands? With an average CMC of 3.52? Seriously, beef it up. I wouldn't go below 35 unless I got the average CMC under 3.0, and even then I would feel the need for a good rock suite. Start by ditching Mental Note and Thought Scour, then keep cutting until you can get to 35 land and 10 ramp effects (probably rocks because you're in Dimir). Focus on rocks that cost 2 or less, Ideally ones that come in untapped. You have your Signet, Sol Ring, and Talisman (Ashnod's needs you to have a board, it doesn't really count as good buildup ramp), consider the following

>Sky Diamond, Charcoal Diamond, and Coldsteel Heart. 2-cost, enter tapped, make colored.
>Mind Stone, Thought Vessel, Prismatic Lens, and Everflowing Chalice. Cost 2 and come in untapped
>Mana Vault, it's mana-positive if you need it to be and doesn't cost a gorillion dollars.
>Mana Crypt, you're running a nearlt 500 dollar deck, you should be able to afford one
>Commander's Sphere, it's 3-cost but it comes in untapped makes any functional color and can crack for a card if you don't need it.
>Hedron Archive, Thran Dynamo, and Worn Powerstone are slower but represent a big surge of mana. Throw one or more in if you need a lot of mana per turn for your activated abilities, your curve is low enough that you shouldn't need them just to cast your spells.
>Magnifying Glass is a personal favorite of mine for any controlling deck, and you seem to be more into control/synergy than straight up combo killing. It's a slightly overcost Mind Stone but in return it can draw you cards forever in the late game.

Went around to a few Wal-Marts in my area and found some of the $20 repacks. Several of them had C14 in them, so I ended up with 2 Nahiris, 1 Ob Nixilis, and 1 Daretti. Really wish I'd have found a Freyalise, but I still got a lot more value than I spent.

The packs ended up being 4 SoI, 3 BfZ, and 1 DTK, the best card of which was a Westvale Abbey.

Altogether, I think it was pretty good. You guys should scrape your local stores, it seems worthwhile. They have them set up so the packs are loosely wedged in either end of the box to try and prevent you from seeing what the deck is inside, but you can shake them loose and peer inside with a tiny bit of effort. There were a few intro packs and a clash pack deck in one of them, so be sure to check first.

Yeah, you have to shake them around a bit at an angle. The packs can and will come loose and then you can see the deck that's inside.

Well, here's the steps to try. Hold the thing sideways so one of the packs is facing upwards. Lift it up and abruptly swing it downwards. The pack will probably come loose and sink a little ways into the box. Shake it like it's pivoting on the bottom corner so that the deck inside actually knocks the pack over. Then you'll either be able to see the deck, or, if it landed so the pack is on top of the face of the deck, you have to shake it back and forth a little so that the pack slides off the face of the deck.

I was able to get all of them visible in the end, taking maybe a minute at first and then less than 30 seconds after I got the hang of it.

Yeah, but the thing of wizards is more or less evenly split between card draw and instant/sorcery matters. Some cheap cantrip, Faithless Looting, reanimation to get the etb trigger more cheaply.

Imagine I have arcanis and mirage mirror caged with Mairsil. If I tap to draw three cards, then use mirage mirrors ability to make Mairsil a copy of Mairsil, can I draw three again?

What were you playing? It does sound like the deck was bad or unlucky if it couldn't win after raping your hand on turn 4. But on the other hand, Leovold scales with more players and is probably better in 4 player than 1v1 because he can rape every hand at once and Puzzlebox lock the game regardless of the number of players.

The deck is mostly what you said though, U/G infinite combos that revolve around Kraj. Though its always fun when you can Kraj your opponents stuff.


The deck is fucked over via removal/wipes like you said , but you are running U/G you have multiple ways to rebuild, fill up your hand, or flatout prevent people from casting wipes.

Uh, the card IS good. An extra draw per turn is worth 4 mana nowadays and cost reduction is usually 3. You get the extra draw for only 3 and you get cost reduction with it. That's a powerful magic card. Whether or not tribal is worth doing is another thing entirely. But if you are that card is one of the few generic tribal cards from the set that is legit powerful. The Kindred cards are cool but generally too expensive with the exception of maybe Discovery and MAYBE Charge for me. The land is mediocre though I Guess you may as well play it if you're tribal since the opportunity cost is so low, and the sword is quite frankly pretty bad imo.

Did you not read the card? It only gives you a draw if the top card is the right creature type. Even in a dedicated tribal deck that's only a third of the cards.

So you draw a card once every three turns on average. That's really bad. Especially when you are revealing cards.

Finally, coat reduction for specific creature types is dirt cheap, and is usually stapled to a card of the relevant type for more tribal shenanigans (see Lorwyn cards like Stonybrook Banneret).

It's a bad card. I would not include it in any tribal decks

It's literally how they built their tribal decks this year, and with the possible exception of elves it will hold true for just about any tribal deck you make. You want to make a list that proves me wrong that's fine by me.

Commander decks aren't standard legal, they are legacy legal, and they don't hold to standard design philosophy. For proof you can look at toxic deluge, a 3cmc wrath printed in commander after they decided wraths of 4 CMC or lower are too strong for standard.

Finally, many of the cost reducers printed are members of the appropriate tribe, which is a huge boost, because as you have already mentioned, you want to jam as many of the right tribal cards as possible into your deck when building a tribe.

The decks this year, contrary to how they were advertised, were not dedicated tribal decks. They were split between at least two themes each. The only consolation they made to that is they made all creatures in the deck the creature type or cared about the creature type. In an actual dedicated tribal you would not have equal amounts noncreature artifacts and spells, that's absurd. Even limited decks don't have an even split like that and they don't care about tribal most of the time.

You're right that older stuff is costed lower and that matters because commander is legacy, but people still play a lot things that are the new price. People still play Outpost siege, people still play 3 drop rocks. This is a little worse than both individually since it only reduces the cost of one thing and the draw isnt' 100% guaranteed, but the package is cheaper than typical continuous draw and fair if unexcitingly costed for the other thing, and you get both at the same for 3 generic mana.

You are 100% right on the lorwyn guys fair enough, but the additional things they do besides reduce cost are bad, getting an additional draw a good chunk of the time is better than what they do. They're also colorless so.

The issue is when hybrids are too close to gold, not when golds are too close to hybrids. Take a look at the gold cards from as recent a set as Amonkhet (Hour's golds are actually all pretty gold and sometimes that's the case), specifically the uncommons.

I feel like I'm being baited. This has been the point I've been hammering: Gold has to have and effect that shows BOTH colors. Hybrid has to have an effect that EITHER can perform. A hybrid RW has to be passable as either Red or White (Destroy target artifact). A gold RW card has to have something that dips into mechanics neither could access on their own (Lightning Helix).

I am trying to make a Sydri EDH deck that works by creating an infinite loop of artifacts leaving/entering the battlefield (pic related), and gaining a game winning effect out of it (Disciple of the Vault, Arcbound Crusher, etc.)

This is what I've ended up with after about a month of playtesting and tuning. I'd say it's very conditional on your meta; some people have gotten pretty salty about quilspike + devoted druid going infinite. Even without that, the triggers can get out of hand fast when you start putting counters on more than a few creatures at a time. If your meta is creature-heavy enough to support her I would definitely recommend. She snowballs harder than almost any deck I've played
