A spell is directly tapping the winds of magic and having to do every step in shaping the nature of the spell yourself. Lots of calculations and practiced movements necessary to not fuck up, plus your own magic talent having determining the potency of your spell.

Priest miracles are, very simply put, you asking your god to cast the spell for you, from the god's vast pool of magic, with success based on how much favour you've earned by sticking to the doctrine and having legit faith.

In short magic is like cooking spells and miracles is bying instant noodles.

Meanwhile, chaos magic, the thinking man's magic, is both: earning power and understanding of magic by Tzeentch while having the freedom to tinker with it as an extension of the Raven god's will.

Not in any way a realistic choice as they have barebones fluff and nill tabletop-presence but I really hope that we will see a Mung-dlc with some lovely chaotic horseniggers.
It's just so much fun drowning the enemy in arrows and only get in a melee at the final, decisive charge, wherein you break the enemy army.
Besides horse archers, what units would you include in a Mung-roster?

>AoS

I would tell you to fuck off, but I'd rather explain that pretty much all lore is effectively cancelled with the setting transition, so who knows if it still works like that over there there. You'll probably have more luck asking in their general since they've actually read the game's lore and can confirm what you say.

Also fuck off.

Get your head out of your rubber cunt you elitist fuckwit, I have a point I'm working on here. Trying to figure out if the concept of a Slaughterpriest could be made backwards compatible because, whilst a majority of AoS minis are CAD garbage - that one has some mustard.

Additionally

>expecting people who play AoS to know AoS lore

>is the Slaughterpriest from AoS using magic when he prays to Khorne and asks him to make peoples heads explode?
Practically everything regarding chaos is magical, be it your way of contacting the gods or the way the gods have to actually see you (souls and consciousness are magic in a way and the gods don't really care about soulless beings, I'm not even sure they would be able to focus on a rock) and chaos is often hypocritical or self contradicting so khorne being made of magic stuff and casting spells, regardless of how brutal they may be, isn't too much of an inconsistency with his rules about the use of magic.

fact is that priests' miracles are different enough to wizards' spells, if not in effects, at least in methodology, to warrant a separation.
the slaughterpriest does not cast magic spells.
>>
>>54887624
Depends on where you stand. I always thought Khorne's unbridled disdain for anything magic is nonsensical when he's 100% magic and anything he does is also 100% magic. I always thought that Khorne magic should just be primitive and in-your-face as apposed to manipulative and subtle.

I was being cheeky anon.

>expecting AoS to have lore.

I mean, surely it has some right? Otherwise how in the fuck has their general lasted to this day?

Anyway, if we were to theoretically apply the slaughterpriest idea to Fantasy, I would say that it probably wouldn't work, since the for Khorne straight up attack sorcery is for pussies therefore he wouldn't have any miracle/spells of that nature. You either use your own hands to make the blood flow or you're a tzeentchian bitch.

The most common khorne magic is the creating of anti-magic amulets to counter magic sissies.
>>
>>54887670
Whilst I'd personally make the argument that a prayer is not metaphysically distinct enough from a spell to dostinguish the two, that's not even tbe major issue here.

It plain doesn't make sense for Khorne to do the slaughtering for his followers.

Give them mutations or magical weapons/armour/followers to make them even more dead killy, sure.

But using divine magic when a big part of his schtick is 'No Wizards Allowed'?

That shit just doesn't fly.

>I always thought Khorne's unbridled disdain for anything magic

It's not anything magic though, he's noted as being the master of forging magical weapons, it's wizards.
>>
>>54887681

Khorne magic should be pretty in-lin with Dwarf magic: basically buffing your weapons, armor and personal stats.
>>
>>54887695
Most of the AoS general is tactics, minis and speculation. I'm pretty sure they come here when they want to talk lore.

As for a Slaughterpriest in Fantasy?...

I suppose I could kind of see it working, as basically a warrior priest style character. But I'd like to believe there would be dissension in the ranks with some Khornates just flat out calling his shit magic and wanting to gut him for it.
>>
>>54887708
>That shit just doesn't fly.
You're right, but it looks cool enough for me.

>>
>>54887708
>It doesn't make sense for Khorne to kill someone.

You're wrong.
>>
>>54887759
I always enjoyed myself the idea of khorne wizards being magicians of other schools that get captured/chained/drugged/whatever for a penitent and often self destructing weaponization on the battlefield.
>>
>>54886554
Let's Encyclopedia Brown this bitch.

>Magic comes from manipulating the Winds of Magic
>The winds of Magic are the seperated strains that come from the Realm of Chaos as it leaks into the world.
>The gods come from/are/are made of/reside in (choose as appropriate) the Realm of Chaos
>Therefor any actions they take on the world is essentially the material of the Realms of Chaos influencing the real world.
>ie: magic

The only difference as I can see is that, because a priest is essentially calling on a higher power, there is another sentience doing all the heavy lifting that could decide 'fuck it, no'.

But as for practical and philosophically - yeah, prayers = a different form of magic

>>54887717

>>
>>54887844

>>
>>54887859
The problem is, if his followers start realising magic is good, he'd lose a lot of people to his brother who sells objectively better magic.

it's not like tzeentch can't also offer being buff should he want to.
>>
>Why no Khorme liki da magic ;_; ??1/?!

Magic is portrayed as an intellectual pursuit.
Khorne's followers are rage blinded and lack the clear head necessary for such things.
>>
>>54887894
>huge model
At that rate I might as well just use Alarielle or this bitch.
They shouldn't be too pricey on the third market right?
>>
>>54887951
Based on that, would you also assert that a calculating serial killer like, say, the Zodiac Killer couldn't be a Khornate cultist?
>>
>>54888074
Seems more like a tzeentch guy, the murders are less about killing and more about getting people to play into his mind games.
>>
>>54888074
Serial killers are usually perverts or narcissists. So Slaanesh or Tzeentch would fit better.
Khorne is more the going postal type.
>>
>>54887898
That's why you shouldn't have a Faction that is Literally Magic and then one part of them be The Magic God.

Also, it works for Slaanesh and Nurgle. Just have Khorne Sorcery be different, guttural, primitive and direct. You want seventeen cocks or mind control people? That ain't Khorne. Khorne gives you a screaming skull missile that explodes the heads of your enemies into more screaming skulls.
>>
>>54887898
By that line of reasoning, why do Nurgle and Slaanesh bother if Tzeench unconditionally can do magic better?
>>
>>54888102
So that must preclude him from being khornate? He can't kill for the love of killing for Khorne and then make a game on top of it?
>>
>>54888175
They're not as mad as Khorne.
>>
>>54888187
No, the game is pointless frivolity.
>>
>>54888187
Yes.
Blood for the blood god, not mind games.
You go, you kill, you keep killing.
You don't kill, leave a message, kill again, and keep fucking with people. It's no longer about the blood it's about your own ego as a mastermind.

>>54888217

These answers seem to lack depth. There's nothig stopping a serial killer from dedicating his kills to khorne and playing mind games with the city watch because they're a sick monster.

Khorne might be better suited to obvious murder and mindless rage, but there's not some caveat that stops intelligent killers from kiling in his name.
>>
>>54888298
He could dedicated his killing to Shallya if he wanted. Doesn't mean it's particularly true to her ethos or character.

Daemons of Chaos army book. Khorne threw a Brass skull at a bloodthister.

In the End Times, to help his chosen warriors, Khorne stabbed the battlefield with his sword. Normal people saw only darkness that left behind destruction. Those with witchsight saw a black sword streching to the heavens stabbing into the earth.

Gotrek meets Grimnir, who by smelting the bones of a thousand demons and tempering it in daemonic ichor creates an axe upon which creates a rune so powerful it can only be used once and cannot ever be replicated, but it's power is enough to kill the gods themselves.
Gotrek takes it and dies using it to kill a Chaos god. A minor one, like Hashut, bel'akor or the horned rat, or permanently cripples the one of the big 4 in the attempt

And I'm not the only one with the suspicion that the Strygos Empire and the Necrach Brotherhood are just stand-ins for future Tomb Kings, right? Even if, if you look at it...I thought Nehekhara would be bigger. A lot bigger, really, at least half the size of the Empire.
>>
>>54890906
>>54891026

I might be wrong but all the fluff about the skaven almost overunning the empire or conquering dwarf holds refers to events that took place at least hundreds of years ago. The stories that are set in the recent timeline typically depict them as hopelessly inefficient with each attempted plot resulting in tons of dead skaven with no gain.
>>
>>54891400
Egypt itself wasn't too impressive back in the day. Sure it was large, but not the largest of the ancient empires, even at the height of its power.

Also, I am crossing my fingers so hard that their grand campaign provides a different story chain than the vortex campaign, seeing as it includes the factions of the Old World too. I've had a theory for the longest time that the decline of the High Elves is because of Asuryan's fury at Malekith's sacrilege of leaping into the flame, despite being tainted by fould magic and knowing he was unworthy. If he is at last slain and the Dark Elves defeated, maybe the fortunes of the High Elves will be reversed? Well if not, I'mma still murder his ass and conquer back the colonies. But wasn't the New World supposed to be filled with orcs..?
>>
>>54890640

Picture an enemy, which lives beneath your cities. Numerous, vicious, cunning. A foe who actively seeks out and removes anyone who learn too much of them, striking their targets down despite the paranoid efforts of those who they hunt.

What is worse, it is almost impossible to muster action against them; the masses view the stories of the ratmen as mere fable or superstition, and those who do know the truth are either keeping that knowledge very well hidden indeed or have been dismissed as being insane.

Even if you do get support, you have to descend into the dark, into sewers and half-flooded tunnels to hunt a foe who was born in that environment, who will lure you deeper into the warren to then ambush and overwhelm you. Or lead you on some wild goose chase, denying you the satisfaction of the fight, all the while those brave enough to join you question your sanity.
>>
>>54891708
I know, but with all the different Tomb Kings cities in the lore...little bit disappointing that they're probably only going to have one or two provinces to fill them out with.

I do actually find it pretty weird that there don't seem to be many Orcs and Goblins in the new map beyond the Top Knots. I mean, there are two other Orc/Goblin factions I can see, but none of them are in Naggaroth, and I thought there had been some specific lore about Dark Elves taking some Orcs as slaves and them escaping and forming tribes. There are actually more Beastmen up there than Orcs, from what I can see. I guess they wanted to leave the Dark Elves free to raid and attack the High Elves?

And on the Malekith note - if (in the End Times) Asuryan was willing to wait thousands of years for Malekith to take his rightful place, who would he have chosen if Malekith had been killed? This seems like a plan with a lot of holes, especially since it's never made clear who Malekith would have been able to make a successor if he had succeeded.

Skaven have always been kind of weird as an army. I mean meeting on the field of battle is really direct for them. The horrifying thing would be to see hundreds of them rushing out of the sewer chasing everyone down and stabbing/biting everyone to death.

>>54891730
Skaven are just another form of beastman. Their existence shouldn't be anymore mythical than the fucking goat people rampaging across the countryside. The only thing that would really be be relatively unbelievable would be that there are enough skaven underneath every major city to overthrow it, if only they could get their shit together.
>>
>>54891834
>I thought there had been some specific lore about Dark Elves taking some Orcs as slaves and them escaping and forming tribes
More than that, they were native to the New World. Malekith won a great deal of fame and renown there by slaughtering them and driving them back, before becoming governor of the OLD World colonies and meeting Snori Whitebeard, at least if I remember my Black Library novels correctly... That or it was the other way around, but either way, there WERE orcs there!

And yeah... But I'm also sad they didn't include the Araby states. They could have finally included those armies of djinn, flying carpets and other things that were alluded to but never expanded upon! Still, there looks like space for maybe three Tomb Kings factions perhaps? A bit of a shame for Tomb Kings players, but honestly, besides Settra and maybe Nagash, how many big-name characters/factions did the Tomb Kings even have, compared to the Elector Counts, or the Elven kingdoms, or the Lizardmen cities? They seemed like one of the more cohesive factions in the setting, as far as I could tell.

Oh, is there any word if TW:W2 is going to finally overhaul those god-awful sieges they had in the first game? They were by FAR the biggest let-down for me, personally, even more so than the settlement restrictions.

I liked the settlement restrictions, to an extent. They mean wiping everyone else out for territory is kind of a silly exercise. Would work a bit better if they eventually go the direction they did with Norsca and make some settlements multiracial between several races, so there is less incentive to drive everyone to extinction.

But yeah, Finubar the Seafarer is the most open and cosmopolitan ruler the Elves have had in millennia and trade with the humans is finally going some way to restoring a bit of lustre to the otherwise slowly-declining elves. The Empire are even sometimes useful allies, if only because there's enough of them to soak up casualties. And while the High Elves dislike the dwarves, none will deny their civilization is every bit as ancient and advanced as theirs.

>>54892036
If you're referring to the thing between Alarielle and Finubar, that was a ceremonial marriage and has been since Aenarion. After the year is concluded, both part ways and take other lovers and spouses. Nothing cuckish about it, as neither of them have any interest in the other after that point.

The Wood Elves had a good approach I felt, by making outposts outside of Loren. If, for instance, the Empire were to conquer an orc/dwarf settlement, why not allow them to set up a colony on it, with limited production and units? Not as developed as a city, or even a town, but it'd be SOMETHING?

Sorry for the game shit, but I just had a really fun battle in TWW. I was playing as Bretonnia, and Nordland, my longtime ally, was in deep shit thanks to Norscan raids and a Chaos rebellion. I was swamped with constant attacks on Marienburg, but I put together a force to try and relieve Middenheim (it had fallen into Nordlander hands by that point). I barely made it close enough to Middenheim in time to join in on the defense of the city.

I won't bore with all the details, but in essence I split my army into two groups to support against both attacking sides, and had to use my cavalry to help break the invaders once they got past the gates and walls. It was a brutal, bloody fight, and in the end I only had my lord and one Knight of the Realm left - not one unit, one knight. The Nordlanders came away better, but with a few mauled halberdiers and swordsmen. I won't be able to relieve Salzenmund, but I can rest easy knowing that Nordland won't die off.

I never thought that I could ever really have fun in a Total Warhammer siege battle, but this was a fight that didn't feel like it was a guaranteed win or loss from the get-go, and it was a lot of fun fighting alongside an ally, even an AI one.
>>

Well, the surviving knight had heraldry of Artois.

>2497: A baron of Artois, in accordance with an ancient treaty, sends a force of knights to aid a Nordland city besieged by the northmen. Making their way inside the city under the cover of a Nordlander sally, the Bretonnian knights help hold back Norscan marauders with their charges. At the bleakest point of the battle, when the Nordlanders are wavering in holding their last line of defense, the Bretonnians smash into the Norscan lines in a suicidal charge, rallying the defenders long enough for the servants of Chaos to break and flee. One battered, wounded knight survived, lauded as a hero and raising the spirits of the townsfolk during the bleakness of rebuilding.

>To this day that Nordland city is one of the few places in the northern Empire where you can insult Bretonnians and earn a fist to the face, and Bretonnian nobles who pass through there have learned not to call the locals peasants. A shrine to the Lady was erected as a gesture of goodwill, but she has no real following and it has slowly fallen into disrepair. Questing Knights who travel into the Empire usually stop there. On the anniversary of the battle, an upstanding citizen is decked in a garishly colorful surcoat, opens a cask of Bretonnian brandy, and presides over a feast and mock jousts. Most Bretonnians who watch the festivities are either bemused or insulted.

But seriously, the Chaos Dwarves never seem interested in attacking their untainted kin. You'd think that'd be a bigger part of their backstory, and an excuse to fight people beyond acquiring slaves. I actually like how they were presented in the Tamurkhan book, setting up a forward base instead of just pillaging as they went and not trying to consolidate their path of escape.

Plague Wardens see this as a test imposed by their Goddess, to ensure their faith is strong.

It's pretty clear that the strictures imposed by the gods are how they want their followers to act, and breaking those strictures makes it much more difficult to get the favor of your god and cast miracles. The fact that they can sometimes do any miracle at all is more due to luck of the dice (getting disfavor makes it harder to cast, but doesn't take it away completely) than anything else.

Aren't the Von Carsteins only in it because they think their bloodline is the only legitimate heir to the Empire? They're not evil for the sake of it, they're just aristocrats making a claim of legitimacy.
>>
So, since we're all talking about Chaos Dwarves already, did they have any role in the End Times? I know they'd basically been squatted by GW proper for almost 20 years by the time End Times rolled around, but I'm curious.
>>

What are the Dawi Zharr planning? All their slavery and industry, but minimal expansion. Sure, they produce arms and armour for other factions but...there must be something greater on the cards.

Personally, I'm a fan of the notion that Hashut did indeed come from Morrslieb and has been guiding the Dawi Zharr to a point where they can produce a daemon-possessed rocket and get him back home.
>>
>>54896141
You have a point about heretical sects, but it can be hard to be certain. Like, take the Doorkeepers - a sect of Morr that believes that anyone that prevents Morr from obtaining the dying, including doctors and Shallyans, should be killed. They were denounced as followers of Khaine, but they still believe they're holding true to Morr's teachings, and technically they aren't breaking any of his tenants, since his strictures are focused on the proper rites for and protection of the dead.
>>
>>54887959
There are the Lahmian vampires from the 6th edition VC release. They're a bit hard to find now, though.
>>
>>54896239
I don't think they're ever given an end game. I think they're just dwarves turned up to 11. Mega Jews who want all of the gems and ore to build even more ludicrous monuments to Hashut, and need lots of slaves to do it. So any goal would be largely unsupported speculation.

Of course I've only read the White Dwarf articles, so maybe the FW bool expands on it.
>>
>>54896200
I put them in that category more for the 'lust for power' part. They claim their bloodline is the only legitimate heir, and that may even arguably be true, but the only reason they want to rule the Empire is to create an undead Empire.
>>
>>54895864
>the last Dwarf draws breath
>the king adds that to the book
I feel I've found a slight problem with your plan.
>>
>>54896239
That's dumb anon, I'm sorry but someone needs to say it. I think chaos dwarfs end game is acquire more material wealth, design ever greater technology, build bigger monuments acquire slaves. They're kinda like dark eldar where their objectives are inward focused not outwards.
>>
>>54896239
Well, maybe on some level all the industry and slave-taking is just to fuel their own desires - experimentation to create new weapons, sacrifices for Hashut, stuff like that. Could also be arguably to slowly expand their civilization and the worship of their patron god - they seem remarkably patient and not prone to large expansion projects, though that might be because they're surrounded by hostile forces on all sides. It might just be that they're selfish enough they don't care about the rest of their world beyond what they take for their benefit.

But it could also just be that Chaos Dwarves are industrious because Hashut is something of a god of industry. He likes all the furnaces and sacrifices, and stokes the greed of the Chaos Dwarves. The end goal might be whatever makes Hashut happy, because they are tied to him as much as he is tied to them.
>>

>>
>>54896310
Given that the main cult denounced them as heretics and hunted them down, and Morr regularly communicates to the main Cult through dreams, and there's no mention of a "No seriously, these guys are legit" dream...no, it's not "hard to be certain."

I mean, fuck, Morr is married to the goddess of justice and has the goddess of HEALING as his daughter. You really think he's just totally fine with fucking up and murdering doctors for saving lives??
>>

>>
>>54896615
I don't know - frankly, Morr doesn't seem to care about anything beyond protecting the dead. The living world is not his domain.

And come on, the dream thing is called into question at multiple points - sometimes not all cultists get dreams, or only one out of a group gets a dream, or there's even room for dreams being faked. Political struggles and actions that threaten the main cult are phrased in terms of dreams from Morr.
>>
>>54896688
>I don't know - frankly, Morr doesn't seem to care about anything beyond protecting the dead. The living world is not his domain.

Morr is going to care a lot more about murder than he does about someone getting another 80 years (if saving a baby) of life. It's explicitly pointed out that he's patient because everyone comes to him in the end. The reason he hates Necromancers and Vampire is because they avoid "the end" entirely, and that's fucking cheating.

To go into more detail on the 'don't murder now, mmm'kay?' bit: Morr despises murder, because murder gives his brother Khaine a chance at snagging the soul instead of Morr. Whether or not doing proper funerary rites protect the soul against this is debatable, but Morr isn't going to appreciate it either way. After all, you don't always get the chance for a proper funeral after you fucking murder somebody since their bodyguard or the town watch might take exception.

>And come on, the dream thing is called into question at multiple points - sometimes not all cultists get dreams, or only one out of a group gets a dream, or there's even room for dreams being faked. Political struggles and actions that threaten the main cult are phrased in terms of dreams from Morr.

And yet there's not even a mention of a FAKED dream saying "These guys are cool." They make no effort to justify themselves beyond "Oh, the cult got so offended when we went on a killing spree, clearly they're under the sway of dark gods."

The Knights of Origo are probably going to stay, since they are in the lore, if old. Knights of the Flame and Thegan Crusaders, as far as I can tell, have absolutely no mention anywhere, so they're probably stand-ins. The Strygos Empire and the Necrarch Brotherhood seem more convincing, but we all know the former is supposed to be farther north, and we know where the Tomb Kings should be.

At the same time, I really hope that we can make use of those factions in another way, because I'd hate having them just be wasted potential. I was surprisingly happy to see the Skaelings and Vargs are still around despite the Norscan changes. Maybe the Strygos Empire can spawn near the Black Mountains and work its way down into the Badlands like an Orc horde and conquer a province about where Mourkain should be - I've seen Orcs do that with ruined provinces, so it doesn't seem like that much a stretch. And Araby might be beset by crusaders after they reach a certain point - or if they're playable (or maybe with the Tomb Kings) you could be attacked by roving crusader armies instead of actual Bretonnian or Empire armies if they declare war.

Even if CA doesn't make use of them, at least keeping them in the game files could be useful for modders.

Lizardmen are kind of a mess as civilization goes. They're led by giant sleepy frogs who follow instructions that don't really make sense any more, if they can be bothered to wake up to issue orders. In the mean time, the lower thinking class has turned to blood sacrifice and superstition, and the warrior class slaughter everyone who enters their lands based on "they shouldn't be here", something one of the sleepy frogs said about some elves who entered the area.

It's either "oh hey, we found evidence of alien life and we're not interacting" or war of the worlds shit where everyone figures out real fucking quick what's going on.

Same deal with the skaven really. Keeping them a secret serves no purpose unless you're looking at avoiding a short term panic. Otherwise, the secret isn't going to stay that way when giant rat men start flooding up from the sewers. The only thing secret about them is that they've got a fairly advanced civilization, which is a huge contrast to your standard beastman tribe that lives in the woods and occasionally shows up to murder, rape, and shit in the streets.

>>

To digress a bit from the topic, men in black was completely in the right. Humans can hardly stand each other. People have died over shoes and bandana colors. When you have a multitude of different aliens with tech that could obliterate the planet in an instant, you don't introduce the local hooligan who will probably just shank it for being weird.

As for the skaven, it's a matter of legitimate will to live. Finding out that the "bastions of sigmar that will sheild and protect you" that you pay taxes on is nothing more then dust in the wind, you lose faith in your protectors. Also yea, beast men are scary and known, but tell your peasant farmer that they are now equip with massive deadly tech and about 40 meters below you in uncountable numbers...but we are taking half your crops because don't worry everything is fine. We all know the end is coming, but humans are weird: we'd rather not be reminded of it.

But the Beastmen trailer is amazing - in my opinion - for how it shows a beastmen raid and sort of tells the story of that Outrider who tries to get out alive. It's not as epic as armies clashing, but it gives you a real sense of fear about what the Beastmen can do. The Vampire Counts trailer is at least similar in that regard, since it has that Witch Hunter and his soldiers getting ambushed, all while getting taunted by Mannfred (with the great 'the dark is my realm, the grave my throne' line).

But after that we seem to be having a lot more trailers with armies clashing and such, and it feels a little less imaginative and creative.

Why did they call them the Mung? If they were embarrassed to call them the Hung, why not use a cooler name like the Chi-An or the Yin or the Wei-Tu?

They're not really, they fight a lot if you put two males together and the mothers have high a tendency to eat at least part of the rats she births. They also breed like rats too.
