Finally started working on Robin. I think he's the smallest model I've ever attempted (I've painted stuff like nurglings, etc. before, but nothing with this amount of detail).

So far he's been pretty fun to paint.

>>
>>54861044
These look so cool. :D
As for the white it might look "chunky" because of the old sculpt. rather than the paint itself.

Also for the future, when painting white you might want to use a mix of bright grey AND white on the flat surfaces, and only use pure white on the edges/most raised areas/etc. That might help with your problem.
>>
>>54861044
Citadel paints are great but their white and black is notoriously shit. Stick to Vallejo for those
>>
I painted my minis yesterday, but today I'm seeing spots where the paint went missing and I can see the primer underneath. Am I missing something? I used Italeri paints.
>>
>>54861191
Italeri paints are just shit, unless you stuck a varnish over it it'll flake off.

That colour was supposed to be off-white but I didn't use enough gray. Gonna apply a darker layer above it, it's already chunky af so another thin layer won't hurt.

The liquid varnish can be a little finicky, try and get it in a spray can if possible. Any matte varnish spray can meant for plastics (so anything from automotive shops) is also fine.

The Watch Masters are badass HQ choices even if you can't change their equipment, the corvus is nice, frag cannons are OP as fuck and infernus heavy bolters are a solid choice. wew lad

seriously though, it's a lot easier to just use a white primer, or use a grey primer. don't make it harder than it has to be friend
>>
>>54864902

Water is fine. Depends on what paints you're using but enough for it go on smooth without pooling (probably thinned too much) but without stroke marks/blobby (not thinned enough).

When in doubt though it's hard to thin too much, it just takes longer because you need more layers.
>>
>>54864902
>Should I just use water for that? And how much?
The general rule of thumb is a milky consistency. There's no hard ratio anyone can give you because some paints are more viscous than others.
>>
>>54864935

I just bought some gray primer for my own stuff. I'm a little confused why everyone flocks blindly to priming with black - I get that it adds shade/hides mistakes better than white... But i feel like it's cons outweigh it's pros a lot of the time.

>Painting noob here. I see you guys go on about thinning paints a lot. Should I just use water for that? And how much?

Water is fine for most applications, but you might do well to pick up some thinning medium (I use Reaper's "Flow Improver") if you need the paint to stay liquid longer for fine details.

>>54864922
>Seems a little disrespectful to stand on your dead bro's chest like that.

>Prime white, two thin coats of ulthuan grey. Then apply a 50/50 mix of lahmian medium and nuln oil to the whole model. Re-layer ulthuan and then highlight with white scar.

outcome is pic related (not actually my model or painting)

I like the grey hint to it, but what do you think would be needed to make it a bit whiter?

What are the other main ways to paint white?

>>
>>54864977
Well, in my experience, white primer tends to be shittier than black primer, i.e. it sprays thicker and does weird shit that black primer doesn't do. So for me, black primer is better than white, but grey is the best choice regardless.
>>
Is it blasphemy if I use brush on primer??? I've been thinking of getting an airbrush setup for priming and larger models...

Nope, Vallejo has primer that works with brushes, and Gesso works well too. It's more tedious than spray-priming, but you can do it all year round.

Haven't painted anything in ages, but I saw the tempestus scions and though they're pretty cool guys that don't afraid of anything. Decided to whip up an army with a helldivers paint scheme. I needed a second HQ and didn't feel like getting a second command squad just for 1 more tempestor.

>Wouldn't mind some advice

The earliest mention of the Lamenters is of their involvement in the Badab War, where they sided with the Tyrant of Badab out of pride, and were granted The Emperor's Forgiveness only after a 100-year crusade of penitence. The Red Compendium has some details and a single illustration of their yellow-armour-and-checked-pauldron colour scheme.

Angels of Death, published for Second Edition in 1996, specifically lists five successor chapters, and hints that while there may be others, there are no records of them, and no other chapters claim Blood Angels lineage. This is contradicted by later sources (c.f. Knights of Blood and Carmine Blades).

The Third Edition codex repeats the same five successors, but says there are doubtless others... it just doesn't say who they might be.

White Dwarf 260 (by the old reckoning) refers to the Lamenters again as being the result of the "Cursed" 21st Founding, and it this point, there is "speculation" that they were born of an attempt to rid the Blood Angel geneseed of The Flaw. Third Edition roolz for using them as a Cursed Founding Chapter appeared in Chapter Approved. The article there does note that they do *not* form a Death Company, which contradicts later publications (pic related).

In Fifth Edition, they are officially considered a Blood Angels successor chapter, but the Lamenters are much closer to codex standards than to the unusual markings Blood Angels have.

Thanks, I looked through the air again and think I have a solid idea on how the designate their markings. They follow the codex squad markings but I am pretty certain the numbers show which Company they belong to (Like Blood Angels, Lamenters have 10). Other thing I noticed is sometimes they swap places for Squad Markings and Company Markings being on the right shoulder and right knee-pad. I am not sure if it's a squad thing or just a preference of the individual marine. Either way it looks cool.

Bought mark III marines to use for my 40k night lords and am not really happy with how the first couple models are turning out. Might just paint the up the rest as iron warriors and use them as part of another detachment or something. Wish I bought the box of mark IV literally right next to it.

Looks good so far! Neatness comes with practice, just keep at it and always try to improve.

And when it comes down to it, never be afraid to spend more time to achieve a more polished product. They're your models, you spent good money on them, and they deserve that time.

I do like that zoids feel I'm getting from the paint scheme, tho, keep giving updates!

Hi, I'm working on The Changling atm and Im trying to pull all the stops out and get the best result I've ever done.

I'm using all the techniques I've learnt over the past 2 years of painting including nmm.

The trouble is I'm trying to achieve a very cool pallette with it but all the nmm I've done before has been very warm.

What's a good way off getting a cool nmm. Adding a bit of blue/green instead of/along with the brown is what I was thinking.

People here are not very well versed when it comes to technically good painting. So they see a good paintjob, they can't give good criticism.
Due to whatever inadequacies, people feel like they aren't good enough to comment.

And thus good painters congregate on other forums with like-minded individuals.
Sadly, result is basecoated primarines and few anons with actually good projects.

Pretty much finished modeling on this one, not perfectly happy with the arms of the little one on top. I put some pauldrons on since taking the pics and it works better.
I still think it's fine, but it is quite a bit removed from my original vision, because the maulerfiend arms were just bigger than I had them in my head and I couldn't find a pleasing replacement either.

Thinking of doing a colour scheme for my Death Guard based off of the sorta, for lack of a better term, "drowned corpse" aesthetic. Primarily using blues, greys, whites, and blacks.
I was thinking of having the primary colour of the armour be white or beige, with blue accents and corroded copper for the metallic pieces, with the flesh and mutations being a sort of blue-grey, with the flesh leaning toward grey, and the mutations leaning toward blue, any open wounds would be black with necrosis.
Just wanna get some opinions on it, good or bad. I am a tad wary of using too much blue on a Nurgle warband, but I want to make the army a sort of "Legion of the Drowned."
>>
>>54870188

This sounds really cool! The best thing about DG is you can be creative as hell with the nasty bits. I wouldn't worry about having too much blue, they're your dudes and they would stand out. Also consider doing the armor as the blue with copper, look at pictures of wrecks at the bottom of the ocean. That against pale, bruised/rotting flesh would be excellent. I'd steal your idea if I wasn't already planning on making mine hazmat yellow with radioactive green skin and such.
>>
>>54871677
That's a good idea actually, I didn't think to look at shipwrecks that helps out a lot.
Also, I've been thinking, but these yellow pustules that basically all the Plague Marines have on them would make for excellent barnacles.

The Reivers kits comes with 24 heads for ten models:

10 with skull face helmets
8 bald with skull face
2 mohawk with skull face
2 mohawk without skull face
2 buzz-cut without skull face

Looking at the ones without the skull face, they sure reminded me of the helmetless heads that came in the plastic Space Marine Sternguard set - guys with iron jaws and bullet-proof foreheads with names like "Flint Ironstag" or "Bold Bigflank".

Is using acrylic paint on minis a big no? I bought some recently, it's decent in quality and supposedly can be used for wood, fabric, and canvas, as well as more. Obviously the paint would need be thinned. Would I just be fucking up my minis?
>>
>>54874450
miniature paints are all acrylic. The difference is in the pigment and viscosity of the paint.
So while you may not necessarily be 'fucking up' your minis depending on what brand or quality of paints you bought they may not be suited for the kind of painting on miniatures.

Best way to find out it to try. If you bought really high quality paint with fine pigment and good coverage you should be able to get good results.

If you bought cheap craft paint you'll probably get rough coats or streaky and chalky coverage.

So I bought one of those bad boys from forgeWorld. I assembled the Main-Hull. But the Backside of the tracks were slightly fucked by a moldslip and the bit of armour above the tracks is also a bit fucked I could only partially salvage it.

Does Anyone have some Ideas on how I could Cover that shit up?

How do I not Fuck Up further painting this from there on? Its the first time Im painting ForgeWorld and I havent painted much Vehicles yet, Im thinking of just spraying it in one colour for the hull as using a brush on to much flate surface probably shows brushstrokes, should I go for a Recess shade or full shade? Probably going for a more Grittier look as its partially fucked on the back and its like 10000 years old

I got a $100 airbrush+compressor kit at Harbor Freight. It's uhhhhhh... an okay setup. Major cons are that the brush is a siphon feed instead of gravity (more paint required in the cup) and it doesn't come with any way to control the pressure unless you buy a pressure regulator (That HF doesn't sell ofc). However, it's given me enough to feel comfortable with making an upgrade when I can and using what I currently have for rougher tasks away from my minis.
>>
>>54875953
On the one hand, a gritty look for a 10,000 years old vehicle would certainly be okay. On the other hand, these things are revered relics that are held in highest honours. It's up to you though anyway.
Regarding the mold slip, well, without a pretty picture there's probably not a whole lot of advice to give.
If you want to avoid brushstrokes, apply multiple thin coats instead of a single thick one. Not just a meme, but that's how it works. Also, I heard painting your coats in different directions helps too, so e.g. the first coat is painted on up and down, the second coat from left to right and so on. Or you could just go for a spray can/airbrush.
I'd recommend a recess shade, if you don't want to paint over most of the miniature again, desu.

>>54875930
I think 1mm or 1,4mm is the right size, but I don't know the sizes of the citadel drills. When in doubt, use 1mm first, or take on of your leftover pistols or bolters. I know you have them, everyone playing Marines has a load of bits left.

Well, suddenly my backlog doesn't seem to be that undoable any more. At least I'm getting done with my troops for now, I always get so demotivated when they just stand around for a long time, without being painted. Which leads to them standing around even longer.

How terrible an idea is it to use metal shards from a can of coke for basing?
Seems like an easy way for low effort scrap metal.
>>
>>54877262
You'd need to sand down the edges, or risk slicing your hand up every time you handled the model.

t. someone who has sliced his hand way too many times on cut up cans

Oh yeah, also a box of maxmini stuff which I got via a kickstarter and ended up waiting two years for... and there's still stuff in my queue from when I first backed it.

And about half of silver tower still part painted.

And the word bearers from betrayal at calth.

And everything from execution force.

And a part built ork plane conversion.

And at least one completely unbuilt trukk.

Three converted mek gunz in need of paint along with their crew.

Is that your Squiggoth conversion? Just a toy dinosaur, or an actual model? Also, mouldlines.
>>

Yeah, you'd need to file the crap out of the edges. I'd be more likely to cut up a plastic packaging bubble, like from lightbulbs for example, and paint the scraps as desired.

His spell looks like a fart and there is a ton of seam lines, but this is another reaper bone that I crapped out today as practice.

I generally don't base - is it really taboo if I just have clean black bases? I like to think of them as shadows of the mini.

Any general feedback?

The fact that you can't tell which one is it makes me very sad.

hey lads, first time painting minis in about 3-4 years. I'm using mostly acrylic paint as my local hobbystore is closed for some ungodly reason. How am I doing/any suggestions?
Also, what color shall I make the back fin? I have some gold metallic paint, but I dunno if that'll look great.

It's an actual model kit. Made by Revell.
>>
>>54877262
If you leave it unpainted, the real metal will look weird next to any metallic paint on your model and just generally seem out of scale. If you do paint it, it would be better to use plasticard which will hold paint better and not cut you.
>>
>>54866641
You gotta apply another layer of the base colour after the wash.
