Character Art Edtion:

How do you design your character's appearance? Pick a brace of images to reference off of? Or just find something "Most Similar"

Depends on the character. Sometimes I'll go concept -> art -> look, sometimes, I'll go concept -> look -> art, sometimes I'll go art -> concept -> look. Sometimes I just don't find art.
>>
>>54853153
Like? smite evil? cool feature, but only works against Evil, maybe is just my personal experience, but Evil chars are scarce as fuck in every campaign I have been into, maybe the BBEG and one or two others, which makes the Paladin shine like once in ever 20 games, not very fun.

Now that Divine Protection got nerfed well, yeah, Paladins have pretty good saves, but that's almost it, 2 level dip.
>>
>>54853212
I usually base the character off art, rather than base the art off the character.

Come up with the concept then look for a fitting picture,

>>54853212
It's the last, last step.
I come up with a very basic concept, then the mechanics, then backstory so as to encompass those as needed, desperately try to find an image that's appropriate, and then adjust things like hair color and appearance descriptions to match more closely.

This picture is to scale.
The tiny red thingy is a real life ship.
The huge black blob is a Starfinder spaceship.
The fun part? They have exactly the same crew size and total mass.

>manned by giants
>made out of Nano-Encapsulated Aerogel
What now?
>>
>>54853555
And that makes perfect sense.

Automation is a thing.
Light materials are a thing.
You must use light materials in shipbuilding because mass does not go away in zero g.
The Drift is not real space and takes different motive powers than a pair of turnscrews run by a diesel engine.

Basically, you're fishing for replies.
>>
>>54853608
Not him, and I mostly agree, but how about artificial gravity inside the ship? how would those light as fuck materials would support stuff made for planets (like vehicles, supplies, people, droids, etc)?

The answer is syfy materials with minimal mass and max resistances

According to page 293, crew numbers are only relevant to NPC-controlled ships and PC's pilot their own ship without crew help.
According to page 316, NPC's can aid another each other in combat, which massively boosts their skill capacities.
According to page 327, all NPC crew members get amazing skill bonuses - by level 20, their good skills are +34, their best skills are +39.
+39 is identical to what a level 20 Operative with a +8 relevant ability modifier and a +2 racial bonus to the skill would have, making it pretty amazing.

Now, let's look at the DC's.
The DC's are insane - the very lowest level 20 DC's are 50, being a fuck you to anyone but Operatives and Envoys, most are in the 55-60 range, making them fairly difficult for even Operatives and Envoys who call in computer support, and some are as high as 70, being impossible for even an Operative with aforementioned skill modifier who requested computer support for a +10 and rolled a nat 20 for a total of 69.
This makes for crazy difficult DC's for PC's, with PC's failing them more often as levels increase.
On the other hand, increasing crew sizes massively helps NPC's, which means that NPC ships become hypercompetent with level while PC ships become increasingly incompetent with level to the point of autofailing most checks unless they call in computer support (which is at most 2 checks per round for the entire ship) and autofailing some checks EVEN WITH computer support.
All in all, it seems like while low level ship combat is possible for PC's, NPC's utterly dominate and wipe the floor at high levels.
Moreover, all non-Operative non-Envoy characters quickly become useless at ship combat due to incredibly brutal scaling on skill DC's.

How is this remotely sane?

>Most androids are fully grown at the time of their birth, and can technically live forever through constant repair, though most androids voluntarily release their bodies after a century or so to allow new souls to inhabit them- a process called renewal that's viewed more as procreation than suicide.

Can someone explain how this bit of lore works? So most androids just decide to basically do a factory reset on themselves after a while? And that's normal? And then people think of the new android (also why does it get a new soul when the old one passes on) as like a child to the first, even though they have no connection of personality, experience, or childhood with them? How should non-androids view this? I just don't really understand it, not how it would work or why someone would do it, so it reasonable to assume most people wouldn't?

This just gives me so many questions.

The concept of spiritual reality intersection with physical reality is so old that they actually have their roots in hunter-gatherer societies, anon.

Literally, the idea that the physical worlds and the spiritual world are interconnected and also separate is a basic precept of shamanic tradition since humans still used their knuckles to walk. It is not that hard to grasp.
>>
>>54853913
I have plans to do exactly this. My theory on drift is that its using pre Gap space where demiplanes where held. One of these days the party will have their ships malfunction and crash into one of the demiplanes created by our many PCs who achieved immortality from one way or the other and be in for a surprise as old characters make cameos and offer to sell PF wondrous items in exchange for information on the new world.
>>
>>54853951

Page 316 does not say NPCs can use aid another during ship combat phases.

Page 316 says that the officer requires the assistance of a minimum amount of crew in order to operate on those ships. In fact, it specifically notes that the individual crew members do not take turns.

Ship combat is in phases. Aid another can't even be used in ship combat by anyone, NPC or PC.
>>
>>54854030
But the book says the skill modifier of each individual crew member, and it's massive.
There's very little leeway to interpret "assist" as anything other than "aid another".
>>
>>54853930
Sure but the Inner Planes are literally reality's building blocks.
>>
>>54854036
There is very little leeway to interpret "assist" because "assist" isn't "aid another" so it's not "aid another". Why would you inject a tactical combat action into the explanation of phase-based ship combat?

Stats are defined because the officers clearly use those stats.
>>
How many teeth have your character lost over his/her career? Did you replace them with gold ones?
>>
>>54853876
Well sure, that's fine, but I still want to know how the process works. Why does the Android body just get a new soul? That doesn't happen to anybody else, a human can die and then have their corpse repaired but no new soul is going to enter it. Also, what does this mean for attempting to revive an Android that's undergone renewal? Does it erase the current soul inhabiting that body, or make a new body, or just fail?
>>

>it would take hours to resolve a single round

>>
>>54854063
Even if that reading is right, it just means high level DC's are retarded for everyone.
As said, an Operative can't hit the DC 60 DC without computer support and struggles with the DC 55 without computer support.
Computer support is extremely limited, so your average high level ship will be failing most checks all over, with incompetence increasing with levels.

And like I said in the previous thread, no magic item feats allowed, no magic item market yet because city is in development (we can only buy stuff belog 300 gp), and magic items found in encounters are rolled but it's always +1 leather armor (we have now 5), some mithral light armors, some darkwood bows and quarterstaves, some scrolls, some rings but none +1 something only stuff like swimming or that one that lets you survive with 50% or so of food and water, a +1 dagger, and that motherfucking greatsword that costs literally more than everything we found so far

What are operative gunners trying to roll to beat DC 60 for? The highest level ship that I can find is the Tyrant, and it has an AC of 28 and a TL of 26.

Are you referring to gunnery attack rolls? An operative who is equal level to the Tyrant and has put max ranks into piloting has over a 50% chance to hit the Tyrant without computers, captains, or dex modifiers, whether or not the Tyrant is using stunts.

Otherwise I'm not sure what this DC60 is.

No, he takes his time and savors choosing what gear to take beforehand, and he travels light so he's less likely to get distracted during battle. But he does relish the choice of who to shoot first in combat.
>>
Let's optimize bamboozling.
Timing: Session 2. While it is easier to do no sessions at all, doing session 1 before you pull the trigger will lull some players into getting more engaged with the potential game because they have already played together atleast once.
Method: Silent treatment. While it easier to move on by just announcing it is over, silently disappearing lets the disappointment slowly seep in, stronger and more bitter than the faster way.

For a melee soldier, a solarian, a casting-focused mystic, or a casting-focused technomancer, is there any reason at all to prioritize Constitution over Dexterity?

Constitution provides extra Stamina Points in a game wherein characters are overflowing with Stamina Points and Hit Points. It also raises Fortitude, although Fortitude-based save-or-lose effects are rarer in the spell list.

Dexterity confers extra EAC, KAC, defense against combat maneuvers, and initiative. It raises Reflex, which even noncasters can target due to explosive weapons. It also affects various skills, attack bonuses for backup ranged weapons, and saving throw DCs for grenades as per (http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2ui71&page=2?Can-grenades-be-retrieved#75).

The only logic I can think of that can vindicate Constitution is "monster design prescribes that enemies deal less damage on a hit," but even then, Dexterity would provide more long-term survivability due to avoiding attacks and soaking up the misses with SP and HP.

What makes Constitution actually worthwhile for a melee soldier, a solarian, a casting-focused mystic, or a casting-focused technomancer compared to Dexterity?

I'd say constitution is primarily a fallback; it's not something you want to neglect, because having a safety net for your inevitable fuckups is important, but it's also not nearly as big and important as it was before, especially since there's no class that keys off it; we don't exactly have a barbarian in Starfinder.

For something like a 1st-level human, half-elf, or half-orc melee soldier, I do not see a reason not to aim for Strength 18, Dexterity 14, Constitution 10, Intelligence 10, Wisdom 10, Charisma 10, pre-theme.

Would such a character have anything meaningful to gain by taking Dexterity 12 and Constitution 12 instead, or even Dexterity 10 and Constitution 14?

Gimme a sec.
>>
>>54857033
On a ranged soldier? I doubt it. I'd put a +2 into con at level 5 and maybe pick up a stat item for it when I have some spare credits, but otherwise nah.

On a melee soldier I think it's a bit more important, since being front-and-center means you'll come under fire more, and no matter how good your defenses are a few will come through to hit you. Dexterity in general is also less important if you're going into melee a lot. However, I still wouldn't put con higher than 12.
>>
>>54857061
Go buy it yourself, poorfag.
>>
>>54857106

>since being front-and-center means you'll come under fire more, and no matter how good your defenses are a few will come through to hit you

The logic does not hold. "A few will come through to hit you," yes, but you generally have enough SP and HP to absorb such hits. Furthermore, a higher Dexterity modifier will always, *always* mean than an attack roll against you has less of a chance of hitting.

Or, in other words, a higher Dexterity modifier means even *fewer* attacks "will come through to hit you," no?

>>
>>54856969
How and why should you even do this? Like this always struck me as "I never read the prompt please tell me what I'm supposed to do again".
>>
>>54857162
Fewer yes; I'm saying that they'll happen at all. I'm not disagreeing with you, but you don't have the defenses of being able to duck behind cover or maybe lay a smoke grenade when you're in melee, and you don't have the option of getting them as easily. You WILL get hit, and it's prudent to make sure you can survive such a hit.

But, like I said, I wouldn't put a melee soldier/solarion's Constitution score above 12, and I'd generally only keep it at 10. I'd level it up at the designated stat increase levels (5/10/15/20) but that's mostly because you actually have the option to do so at those points, as you only have to abandon two stats, and the peripheral benefit of a wider safety net is important.

I am reposting. Earlier, I had emerged from my first Starfinder session. We were an ysoki operative (ghost), a vesk melee soldier, an android technomancer, and a human mystic, all at 1st level. (No envoys or solarians.)

The session was a mini-adventure consisting of three combat encounters. The first fight was inexplicably difficult; our opponents were four 1st-level PCs. The GM had used a mix of First Contact monsters, math-converted Pathfinder monsters, and PCs-as-NPCs. The GM did not have much of a choice given the lack of official monsters.

Before each encounter was a series of skill-related challenges, which spanned a wide variety of skills. Memorable moments included hacking into a cyborg bear's computer, using a Token Spell to paint the party white in order to bypass color-scanning sensors, and cooking a meal so fine as to be toxic to space goblins (and then rigging two detonator-activated grenades to it).

I was playing the operative. The class exceeded all expectations. The operative is a juggernaut of a skill monkey that can do just about anything out of combat. The operative is no slouch in a fight thank to trick attacks. Our operative had the greatest kill and damage count in the party, even discounting their critical hits. The class sits comfortably in mid-to-high tier 3.

Unsurprisingly, given the abundance of ranged weapons, combats that start at long distances significantly screw over melee-focused characters. Low-level spellcasters suffer too, as their spells tend to be close-ranged. My azimuth-laser-pistol-toting operative was exploiting a range increment of 80 feet against NPC operatives foolishly wielding tactical semiautomatic pistols with a mere 30 feet for a range increment. Predictable.

The mechanics were not particularly inspired, but they vaguely accomplished what they set out to do: run generic Pathfinder adventures, except in space. It was serviceable, and it helped that 1st level in Starfinder is not quite a rusty dagger shanktown.

You don't call them and ask, though. That's being pushy, and employers don't appreciate pushy employees anymore. You just submit the application online and pray; I've been flat told that I was no longer being considered for positions after I called up to check on the status of it, solely because I called up to check on the status of it. It showed too much initiative for the modern workforce.

The only reasons why I had opted to play an ysoki in this game in were:

• It was a 1st-level game, and infrared sensors for darkvision were beyond my price range.
• I was using a wrist-mounted computer for social skills anyway.

I would have played a halfling otherwise. Halflings and ysoki both have +2 Stealth, thus making them ideal for "one true build" operatives (ghost), if the GM is running operatives as-printed.

There is a disclaimer here: even after I had shown the GM the statements from Mark Seifter concerning the errors in the operative as printed, the GM opted to run the operative RAW, since what is printed in the book is what is printed in the book.

I am confident that the operative (ghost) would be significantly less potent if the GM takes Mark Seifter's word and removes the +4 to the ghost's trick attacks; that would mean denying the "one true operative build" that is a halfling or an ysoki operative (ghost) with a pistol, and encouraging more variety in operative builds.

I would also like to add that our vesk soldier was extremely mediocre during the session. In combat, they were shabby simply due to low d20 rolls; I imagine that their Blitz tactical pike build would have proven quite impressive otherwise.

Outside of combat, the vesk's -2 Intelligence, a middling skill list, and 4 base skill points per level lend nowhere near satisfactory a noncombat toolset. All classes should have solid combat options and noncombat options, if you ask me.

As for the PCs-as-NPCs, the GM, in fairness, had written the subsequent encounters with actual monster guidelines in mind. I am not sure why they had opted for PC-built enemies in the first encounter. It was a tough fight made easy only by timely critical hits from our side.

>>54857235

Constitution provides only a marginal increase to SP, when a character's durability is both their SP and HP. I am skeptical of investing in Constitution above 10 at 1st-level.
>>
>>54857297

You'd be surprised. Admittedly, it happens mostly in meatspace groups where people haven't heard of or aren't willing to try Roll20, but there's a ton of people who will tolerate a blatant That Guy just to keep a semblance of harmony in their group.

I've done it myself, even when it was clear that the player in question was trying to find ways to betray, sabotage, and corrupt our goals. But he was an old friend of the GM and the other players, and circlejerked with them about politics, so he got given a free pass by everyone but me until he finally just tried to torch the campaign and run.

Space horror. The party is held prisoner, awaiting trial, on a ship that breaks down and is set adrift while spanning the planes, forming a sort of bridge between them. The crew goes full event horizon, and the party has to find a way to escape. Find an ejection pod, and you've left the bridge intact. Restart the ship, and you need to contend with the possibility of evil escaping.

Of course Evil eats itself, but let's be frank here and recognize that a tabletop campaign with people roleplaying an evil character will be a little more cunning about their evil than if they were actually the evil character themselves. I can't count the number of times I've seen a group of disparate evil bastards unite either OOC or IC to destroy the Goodly characters, or at least corrupt them.

No, of course they didn't. When you fuck with someone else's character just because you're too much of an asshole to develop your own, that spells the end of the campaign, likely the end of a friendship as well. You're going out of your way to ruin a game and be a dick just so you can write more fucking NUMBERS on your sheet.

Hello /pfg/, I want to get a Starfinder game going and I'd like 1 or 2 players to round up my group. Text only over r20 to be played on Sundays at 1pm (GTM -4). I want the game to be about space exploration without too much pressure from some impending doom. I would also like to keep the game PG 13, or at least avoid full blown erp and all that entails. Here's the pitch if you guys are interested:

"500~ years after humans first made contact with alien life, they have manage to integrate to the interplanetary community. All kinds of aliens are now a common sight on the average citizen's everyday life. Now an old Dreadnought Class Warship, a remnant from The Colony Wars (tm) has been re-purposed as a high luxury Cruiser for the wealthy and famous to travel the outer rims of the known universe in style.
(you) have surprisingly earned a ticket for it's maiden voyage. Will you take the chance of a lifetime and embark on a trip that will surely change your life?"

I set up a discord channel to talk over any possible details with people that are interested, feel free to inquire further inside: https://discord.gg/bMm2FJ

I wouldn't shit on it if the players didn't act like they were engaging in high fucking society and culture when they're playing a game where dragon spit got up someone's ass. I have at least 20 gigs of chicks getting nailed by monsters but I don't act pretentious about it.

>No one was even shitting on PLD specifically until someone tried to prop it up as being some kind of exception when it comes to lewdgames.
This. The thread has long gotten bored of shitposting PLD, it's stale material. If PLD would leave alone there wouldn't be anything for people to complain about about, but there're always people coming in here talking it up and selling it on things that should only be known by the players and who they share with like it's common knowledge.

I don't care about the game content but it's obnoxious as fuck. Argentum or Seagle build worlds and run games but neither of them act like they're some kind of authority.
