It's really off putting to your cyoa. If your stuff was a legeit vidya it would make sense but it's a cyoa it doesn't really make sense for it to rely so heavily on game mechanics. Unless you find a more organic way to bridge the mechanics into the lore I really can't make heads or tails of how combat in that setting works.

The tower sends teams against rogue mages because they aren't foolish enough to assume that a disjunctive gauntlet would be enough against a truly competent mage. Well I had issues because it didn't really give any meaning to the stats. I had no idea what the numbers where based on. What kind of destructive feats the moves where capable. What native abilities a person had outside of 'moves'. Why the 4 move limit is so strictly enforced. How swapping moves worked. How special abilities worked. Are moves absolute like charms from Exalted. How weather moves affected the environment.

The issue wheren't with the mechanics exactly. But they where so abstracted from the lore and there was less than 0 effort to relate them. So it was all kinda meaningless.

I did try to keep to the original formula of Pokemon while being kind of liberal with it (i.e 4 move limit, special abilities, stats and what the numbers were based on). That was kind of an error and I have made some efforts in the update to explain the reason behind the existence of moves and abilities in the lore. First Kind faction explains it.

My preference for anti-magic is usually in terms of 'arcane knowledge': like she's trained in spotting the mathematical resonances and geometries in magic so that she can with effort undo them. Perhaps with a variety of tools, like the gauntlet.

So, instead of essentially being able to wave the gauntlet and break a spell or undo a ward (as the text implies), she must spend some time figuring out what's going on and 'picking the lock'.

This way, it's more obviously a battle of wits between her and a mage. In a way, she's a mage herself, just a slower and more technical one.

In my view, it's not about balance, so much as interest.
Depending on the CYOA player's imagination, she will either be crap that gets taken down by a lightspeed rock, or the ultimate in 'teleports behind you'.

But therein is the problem, the description creates those two extremes of imagining. She's either holding up her hand and blocking 1700 nukes, or she's tripping on a tremor.

In my view, she'd be extremely fast and clever, able to switch implements on the fly and gain vantage points, but still she must discern a plan and a path to her target, and prepare the right tools for the job.

Reminds me a bit of Dutch from Killjoys, in character design.

You can write the description to be less laundry-listed to avoid that.

Basically, I tend to consider that it is impossible to be trained to fight all magic simultaneously: it's far too diverse a subject.
But you can be extremely good at researching the target, infiltrating, and quick-wittedness.

A cursory list of tools and their specific application, ex. not just a 'spell reflective' glass but one to counter a specific kind of magic in that world.

Specificity is key. So I'd say if you use the gauntlet, perhaps make it something like 'enables her to touch certain flows of mana, manually misdirecting them'.
Then the player can imagine possible dangers, like trying to touch 'fire mana'. And she could have a cooling charm for just that event.

Misdirecting mana toward her allies might be very helpful in a group, as well.

It's essentially just a way to make the choice of quests more interesting. Otherwise I tend to see stuff like "I do everything" or "I pick the hardest" or "off to the harem", you know?

Battlemage by SDA had something similar, but the results were rather generic. (More points.)
There was another one that had you growing up in an academy with your childhood friends, and so on.

That's partly what I meant by 'Mass Effect' style before, not to be forward about it: The childhood friends CYOA had it so that if you picked certain quest options, the companion would "give into darkness and become a tsundere", or related. It was perhaps a shorter end line, basically.

The limiting mechanic I had intended to use had been time. Narrative threads is the theme, and the quests aren't things that you just decide to do, but things that happen to you (anon is choosing the narrative ahead of time, but in "story" the quests happen gradually).

So, each quest has an amount of time (months, years) which is the amount of time that must pass since the last quest until that quest can be triggered.

Source of the title of the build. Would go with the sewer but I don't want to die of dick rot and permanently lose my sense of smell; similarly, catacombs would be disgusting and the fires of hell are too dangerous. This way I get wide open spaces and something that resembles nature.

Yeah, Reclaimer is basically purpose built for this place. But as I said, I'm not really interested in being a support character in combat. And I think being able to fix up the armor of dead parties we find, or parlay with live parties willing to negociate who need their armor fixed, will go part of the way toward recouping the loss. Fixed up armor can either go on my party members and thus their old duds can be sold, or it can be sold directly for a lot more than it would have gotten in beat to hell and back state.

Lily Archstar is a no brainer for this area, but me and my dick aren't getting within 100 miles of that kind of crazy. you're next in line and beat out Hammerstein because you have a worthwhile personality and won't follow me around like a lost puppy all the time. You will also help with negociating with other parties when we run into them, and hopefully Ra'Kot can help you to get used to dungeon life as much as he'll help me.
Ultimately I can see it going something like this - between them, Yukiko and Ra'Kot will keep most beasties disoriented and steadily taking damage - spinning on the spot trying to figure out what's hitting them. Yukiko annihilates swarms and in the event of sizable pack hunters I am then free, as the party's main tank and secondary damage output, to take a horde fight as more of a series of one on one and one on two engagements I can fairly quickly win - while staying roughly between them and the aformentioned casters/hurlers. When it comes to a single big foe, all Ra'Kot and I have to do is keep him facing us and avoid dying while Argyle circles around to reap that delicious unguarded backmeat, because it is very very difficult to keep your guard up in two directions at once for most creatures.

Argyle will in general serve as the DPS, a wild card of a highly mobile harassing force capable of minor AOE on his own and slashing from unexpected directions while foes are focused on trying to beat their way through my guard.

I talk to other people, if I can. Usually most of my ideas come from hearing people talk about what they want, and me thinking about how that would work as a cyoa, and sometimes I get pulled in, and sometimes I don't. Otherwise, just discussing the ideas and where I'm stuck at in general will usually get my brain pulling up ideas for how to go about it.

The main problem however, is that it isn't really an instant process, sometimes I get an idea quickly, othertimes I gotta mumble about it for an hour or two. Only a few people I feel comfortable ranting to about cyoas for that long, and they aren't available as often as I'd like.

and yea, went pretty generic with the names on purpose. Partly in humor, and partly so people could easily remember them. Haunch real on the nose compared to Jimbarex. That and most CYOA's don't even name the allies

Bovina and Threesa definitely seem to be popular picks. Chupacabra's also decently common. Asskicker and the genie ring are popular, with some leanings towards the ambiguous chosen one ring


Skeleton King's shown up a few times too, I always imagined he sat up in his tower not doing shit, decided he was bored, and thought conquering the world would spice things up. He'd be equally happy if he conquered everything as he would if you had a giant epic fight with him and his army. Beat him, kill him or convince him otherwise, I think he'd lose with a smile and give you a humble "You got me... nice job"

I like to base characters off of personalities and then flesh them out... and uh, that's pretty much it. Pretty straight forward. Except I don't like to stop at the things that make them a character in a CYOA; I like to think of their trivia: what do they like, what do they do for a living, how do they act towards others and whatnot. Even very mundane trivia like "she jogs every morning" gives a bit of character. I think if you add these little blips in,

And part of that fleshing out is fleshing out the setting. Make an appropriate setting to make it feel like they're really a part of the setting, and that they interact or even make impacts to it. I find this is a big failure with a lot of waifu CYOAs; most of the time you're just assumed to be in a modern setting and that doesn't leave much to the imagination (at least in my eyes; whenever it's in a modern setting I just imagine myself and then I feel detached from the thing).

Sometimes I base a character off of a music album or sound to give them a tone, but I usually only do that for characters who are deliberately more fleshed out than others, like narrators or characters in stories.

Nope, the process of creating a CYOA is not important. The final result is all that matters and how you came to that result is unimportant. In fact that is how I make 60% of my options or more and thet is why all of my pictures are extremely well matched to the option that the picture represents.

I view them as noble in intention, with some bad apples.

Their purview is to protect non-magical people from abuse by magic users. So they'll go after, for example, necromancers who are fueling their power with a pile of corpses. It's not a "anyone not trained by the tower is not permitted to practice magic" kind of thing.

They are definitely opposed to the use of Void Magic which in their (mostly correct) view, does not end well. And they would not be okay with Buluk's biomantical alchemy, but honestly almost no one would be due to (partially founded) fears of the dangers of messing with life itself.

Additionally, that kind of set-up inevitably leads to at least some overzealous individuals, who will overstep the bounds of their purview for what they believe are good ends.
