probably some erastilian planet. she might not have wanted to get married off, so she picked up a manual on fighting and fucked off to go fuck-fighting and fight-fucking across the stars, using her stonkin' great tits and hard fists to kick ass and shit. Probably also smokes and rinks heavily and acts raunchy, rather mannish too.

But under the veneer of mannishness there's a sweet tomboy that just likes having reliable friends

>>

He's not even mentioned anywhere in the book, anons. And he's not the only one. Norgorber is gone, for the god's sake; where else will we find four halflings in a trenchcoat and mask? No where, but our hearts. We have to move on and accept our loss; remember it but never, ever let it control us.
>>
>>54756844

What sort of planning have you done?
>>
>>54756802
Went better than expected. We got mildly fucked by traps, then fought 2 golems in a Cloudkill. Punched one dead, then got punted into a pit by the other. The rest of the party cut that one to pieces. I was anxious as fuck and used a fate point I probably shouldn't have. Next week is tallying the loot.
>>
>>54756860
The devs have literally stated that all the old gods with two exceptions - Torag and one other I can't remember) are still present in Starfinder's setting.
>>
>>54756803
I hope she gets roped into being BIG MUSCLE for a very special heist and ends up realizing the other chumps that got roped in were the reliable friends she wanted all along after the lot of them realize their "employer" is an evil jackass that has to be taken out not just for their own sake, but the sake of an entire planet. Or something like that.

>>54756802
I seem to have completely thrown off my DM's plans for last session when my PC released (unharmed) the enemy we captured to question after the enemy stonewalled my PC long enough to make him give up. The DM mentioned afterwards that apparently there was a reason he wasn't talking, like there was something specific I needed to do to get him to talk. My DM says he wasn't expecting that and isn't sure what to do now, but I have no regerts.
>>
>>54756865

Mostly for Starfinder characters! And for whta to do with my pathfinder campaign; with my schedule as it is it might not last much longer, so I want to offer some options to my players at least. I might try to run a starfinder game, but i'll probably let things lie for awhile, calm down and refresh myself; work on things and let them stew befor ejumping in head first, y'know?

I had a sleepover at my friends' house, and we played some board games and Magic: The Gathering. Clank! is pretty fun, Fennec, and it's very easy to play while drinking.
On the game-related front, I had a lovely session yesterday evening, and thought some lovely thoughts about some of my other games.

What about you? Did you have a nice weekend?

The enemy was just a cultist mook. The party had split up at the time, my half encountered some enemies and beat them up, keeping the one alive for questioning (well, actually because my PC didn't want to kill him, but questioning is a convenient bonus to that).

It's the Temple of Odd Angles, it's set in this map. It's wedged in a corner in between and outside all facets of reality. Gravity works strangely here, depending on your location and state of mind. Inside are a small fleet of elephant-sized eldritch monsters that can only be comprehended as a bunch of crazy shrimp. Once the party finishes the dungeon, it's going to collapse in on itself and become a cat-sized glowing white translucent shrimp familiar type creature, and it allows them to bypass planar boundaries. They need that because the gods have blocked the material plane off from the rest of the multiverse to protect it from Fenrir.

Nothing particularly exciting, but I am immensely regretting not having Clustered Shots yet, despite not being our primary damage dealer. Narrowly avoided someone getting baleful polymorphed when we should have taken down that Qlippoth sooner due to the monster having DR/-. Also learned that apparently constructs can still be nauseated so long as it's not via Fort save, how that works is anyone's guess.

My group is going to fight several efreet in a huge floating tower from the elemental plane of fire that has broken into the elemental plane of air and is serving as a base for marauding fire creatures. Rules Question: This is the first game I've ever play that is actually making it to a level where Prestige Classes become relevant, downtime is also abundant so retraining is something that gets done a lot with the group.

Assuming I meet the requirements for a PrC, can I just keep retraining my base class levels into PrC levels assuming I keep the required skill ranks?

No.

I just fudge the rolls in the PCs favor. After they get used to their new characters and my rules, I'll stop.

The Hidden Blade/Wizard gestalt changed to a Kensai/Evoker, and I don't know what the Bard/Rogue and Ranger/Druid are changing to.

Because of this, testing is pointless.

Plumbing the depths of ancient ruins in search of mysterious corrupting artifacts. Evidently, the holder of this particular artifact is enlisting some truly bizarre help. The feat will be a ways off unfortunately, and I'm going to figure out ways to cope in the meantime. The method of attack so far is "cross fingers the buffs will keep my allies alive, then kill it in 4 turns instead of 1", which is working far better than it has any right to. Unoptimized parties are a hell of a drug.

Realizing you fucked up some homebrew and it's too late to fix it is a worse drug.

They're pretty much The Galactic Empire from Star Wars.

As long as you have all requirements from class levels before taking the first prestige level? So the first 5 or so are untouchable.

So we know that Pathfinder only runs so many kinds of fantasy without a lot of fidgeting. Heroic fantasy, go for it. Epic fantasy, doable if you don't mind extreme rocket tag. Low fantasy, good luck. There's an expectation of power levels and only so many kinds of settings the systems supports.

How's Starfinder shaping up in handling the huge family of sci-fi and cousins? Science fantasy looks like the name of the game here, but do you think the tools will hold up in cyberpunk? Will progression be too rigid for apocalyptic?

>Science fantasy looks like the name of the game here, but do you think the tools will hold up in cyberpunk? Will progression be too rigid for apocalyptic?

The emphasis on better gear as opposed to more magical gear works perfectly for Apocalyptic campaigns, since that garage gun you hobbled together shouldn't be as effective as an AK-47 fresh out of storage. As for Cyberpunk? It seems to be going in a good way, we've already got a few canon Cyberpunk regions in the Pact Worlds.

Is it just me, or are the tactical pike (475 credits) and, to a lesser extent, the tactical cryopike (3,360 credits) remarkably cost-effective and useful weapons for a melee character?

They deal a respectable 1d8 damage, but more importantly, they confer reach. For a melee character, that means attacking both adjacent enemies and enemies out to 10 feet (ignoring the diagonal measurement rule).

• A reach 5 melee enemy closing in on you will suffer an attack of opportunity.
• Move adjacent to a ranged enemy and threaten them with an attack of opportunity for firing a ranged weapon.
• Full attack much more easily than a reach 5 character could, since there is no longer any movement during a full attack.

The only limitation is a major one though: only one reaction, and thus, attack of opportunity, per round. There does not seem to be a Combat Reflexes feat either.

What does everyone think? Should a 1st-level melee soldier or, yes, solarian (heavy armor proficiency is the way to go) be dropping 475 credits on a tactical pike and then 465 credits on hidden soldier armor, thus becoming a durable and mobile lancer?

He has the orc hornbow from AA2, and some Tempest Gale maneuvers. I think he'll last three rounds.

My character for a one-session, "Go here, kill monsters, pick up MacGuffin" trial of Starfinder is an ysoki from the Azlanti Star Empire.

>The mouse hails from the Azlanti Star Empire's throne world of New Thespera. She was born in the shiny laboratories of a well-funded arcology, which conducted genetic research on uplifting lesser species to have more human-like appearances and lifespans. Souris and her "family" are proud to be exemplary specimens of such a project, and they all hope to come halfway close to human arete some day.

>This young rodent grew up in a section of the arcology with too much money and too strong a love for recreational gunslinging. There, she won a scholarship to a prestigious, not-quite-military-but-still-rather-militant university sponsored by the glorious state. Souris has been happily studying the sciences of xenobiology and stealthily shooting people. She is working diligently to complete her thesis, which involves finding monsters, putting a laser bolt in them, taking notes, and possibly dissecting their corpses. The mouse is carrying out the current section of her thesis in a distant backwater town, because New Thespera and its adjacent worlds are a smidge too clean of aliens, and the planets adjacent to those have monstrosities far above her pay grade.

Is this a plausible backstory?

>A number of orcs have left the tribe to become traders in Airspur, where half-orcs are fast becoming the dominant members of its society. Because of this, a large dwarven mercenary company has offered its services to Cimbar, which is currently at war with Airspur. For the most part, however, the orcs of Airspur have adopted human values and compete with human traders for business, not racial reasons. The archmage Heptios says that orcs who adopt human values may be the greatest threat the Realms have ever known.

His Intelligence is 15, and he's helping seize the Imaskari ruins to get anti-divine artifacts to defeat the church of Talos because they just won't stop sacrificing virgins.

If he lives long enough, he might sound like an ancient Athenian. How do I make that sound cool? The one-liners from Hercules: The Legendary Journeys is too campy.

Nah, that's pretty standard for most Paladins. It's basically written into their character that they're constantly trying to be the Main Character of any adventure they're in, and as such are built to be one of the best 1pp martial classes out there in terms of overall survivability. Just be sure to take the spell that gives you a free LoH to keep you from dying or going unconscious on the off chance that someone manages to get you below 0 and you'll be golden.

It depends on the power level of your setting.

Orbakh from the Forgotten Realms is a 25th level Wizard vampire, but he wasn't the biggest threat in Faerun.

King Kaius ir'Wynarn III from Eberron is a 13th level Fighter vampire in a low power setting, but he still can't take over the continent.

Make him powerful enough to cast Wish, and give him an army.

What sort of 1 handed equipment would be useful in a starfinder game? I'm not really talking about stuff that currently exists, more general ideas for sci-fi stuff. As right now, Starfinder lacks shields (And sword + gun is pretty terrible) so 1 handed melee/1 handed ranged sorta lacks a reason to exist in the face of 2 handed weapons.

Imperial culture and religion centers around humanities divinity and/or divine origins. To spread humanity is to spread the divine is often used to explain the endgame of the Empire.
Alien traits that which can be successfully passed down through hybrids and humans are not considered Alien. Rather such traits are considered to now be part of humanity as a whole and therefor divine.

Has anyone noticed that given the way multiclassing works, especially with regards to Resolve Points, all solarians want to dip a level in soldier first, for heavy armor proficiency and Strength-based Resolve Points. Dipping is alive and well in Starfinder, alas.

Likewise, has anyone else observed that critical hits now automatically confirm, and that there is no longer a stipulation against multiplying extra dice? This makes up for more limited options for tinkering with critical threat ranges and critical multipliers, which is good; swinginess is to be avoided.

I just worry that critical effects will be too niche; they apply relatively rarely, and there is a good chance that they will be wasted due to the enemy being dead by then. If anything, I would have preferred for them to trigger on missing an enemy by exactly 1 as a "glancing hit" mechanic, so as to give a consolation prize for barely missing and to reduce swinginess.

In Starfinder, what is the point of the Stand Still feat and combat maneuvers in general? KAC + 8 is a terribly steep number to beat, no? Why even bother with the attempt to, say, trip someone?

On another note, it has been pointed out that the solarian's Blazing Orbit is ambiguous as to whether the 2d6 fire damage applies per square. Does it? If so, is this Starfinder's equivalent of 4e's Flame Spiral?
>>
>>54758946

The solarian's Blazing Orbit could very well be a means through which to salvage the class... depending on the interpretation of the ability.

As well, what is the point of the Step Up feat? You use your reaction to step towards someone making a guarded step away from you... and then what? They can now cast a spell or make a ranged attack without provoking from you.

I personally consider character levels past 20 or mythic rules to be a little bit bullshit so I would rather have the character be a level 20 sorcerer but then create a bunch of cool special abilities that represent his vampiric might until it's CR 25. Plus that way he'll feel like a really powerful vampire instead of just a really powerful guy who just irrelevantly happens to be a vampire.

Or you.could just start slowly making undead and leaving them either all over the place or in important positions to cause strife

Now, you aren't just yet an immediate threat to all life on earth, but if you are clever you can be a very real and dangerous threat, especially if you use subtlety and precision in your mayhem

It lets you keep in range to attack a target that is larger/has longer reach than you.
It also lets you continue to position yourself as soft cover.
Since you can't Swift Action 5-foot step to avoid AoO and keep a full attack, it gives you a bit of flexibility.
I would think that you would be well advised to continue down the feat chain though.
>>
>>54760471
>Since you can't Swift Action 5-foot step to avoid AoO and keep a full attack, it gives you a bit of flexibility.
Yeah but an AoO is your reaction Step Up kinda sucks.
>>
>>54759649
Combat maneuvers have always been about providing useful debuffs/control abilities in melee. Tripping a target gives a huge melee advantage to the one still standing, for example.

In Starfinder where damage scales quite highly based on equipment, Disarm and Sunder maneuvers can be a quick end to the fight. Especially now that pillaged loot sells for a much lower return, you don't have to worry quite so much about breaking stuff. Indulge in your Jedi urges, and make sure to get your combat maneuver feat to Sunder!

I think that while you may find KAC+8 is "high," considering most of the combat maneuvers are melee, and quite a bit of ranged combat will be having to shoot at the AC +cover or +prone bonuses, it won't be really that different than normal, I expect. There is always a feat to add +4 to your favorite combat maneuver, too.

>>
>>54760496
Well, if they guarded step away from you, you weren't going to provoke for that AoO anyway, so at least now you start your turn next to them. Again, the usefulness is there when trying to keep the pressure on a larger target and forcing yourself as Soft Cover for your allies, so even if a baddie is stepping back to try and shoot your teammate or blast them, you still are giving what, +4 AC to your friendlies? And not-so-subtly saying "Ignore me at your own peril."

There is one other distinct advantage that was always nice in Pathfinder, but not sure how it will work here exactly, and that is that Turn Order can make is that by utilizing Step Up, you end up next to the enemy trying to break away from you, which incidentally means that you also continue to provide a flank for your buddy who's turn is up next, but before you would have normally been able to close the gap on your own turn. Worked really well in Pathfinder thanks to cooperation for sneak attack. In a party with only one melee type in Starfinder (which may be much more common), I'm not sure.

Anyway, the feat isn't "tax" level, and it leads to better benefits going forward.

Eh, when I think of Sci-Fi combat, or any combat with ranged weapons, there's going to be some sort of cover. Hell, there's a feat that lets your mechanic basically sandbag for you, and no reason not to hit the dirt if you're getting into a shooting fight at range. You could even Shoot on the Run, from cover to cover.

Granted if you're fighting space zombies or are planetside fighting jungle monsters and the like, your mileage may vary.

Back to the point though, tripping weapon+feat gets you +6 on your trip, so you really aren't that far off if you build a little for it (one feat), and if you are built towards hitting things with Energy and then run into something that has high EAC and low KAC, you can use it to your advantage. That's obviously speculation, since that depends on alien stats.

Heh, now I'm imagining sundering through forcefields and the like.

I started running a game a month ago. Other than last weekend, we play every two weeks.

Session 1: Two players. One made an elven Hidden Blade/Wizard gestalt. The other made a half-elf Ranger/Druid of Lurue.
Session 2: One new player. He makes a halfling Bard/Rogue. The elf changes to a Kensai Magus/Evoker. He wanted to play a Psion/Illusionist before I told him he couldn't take the Cerebremancer prestige class.

None of them has ever played a gestalt game before, but the elf player knew what it was. Since they're figuring out the rules, I'm giving them a few sessions to get adjusted before they become final.

The halfling wanted to work towards the Arcane Trickster before I told him that some prestige classes weren't going to be allowed, so he wants to change. The half-elf played two sessions before deciding to change. They haven't sent me any new emails telling me what they're going to change to. I'm also using the first few sessions to put them in situations to see what works, like dungeon exploration, downtime rules, and fighting when outnumbered.

>>
>>54760690
Well, standing up is a Move Action, so off the top of my head, the target won't be full attacking next round, and if he stays in the dirt then he's going to be paste pretty darn quick.

I'd have to brainstorm a bit to think of what all his options are. Crawling away? Seems poor, not sure if it provokes, but I assume so. Have to check. Standing up + guarded step? Good case for Step Up. But there, whole turn wasted just to get five feet away.
Standing up + attack? OK, I'm fine with that. I'm tanking in melee.
Staying prone? I get to full attack without worrying about penalty to hit.
Surrender? Seems good, can give the "it's useless to resist" spiel.
Too tired to think of others, but you probably can find a few. I'm certainly not saying trip or combat maneuvers are without flaws, but hopefully they will have their niche.

Pathfinder is a bit of a mess though. It's bloated and suffers too much from the 3.5 legacy. Martials suck, and Paizo don't care.
>>
Friendly reminder that, since you didn't get into Ensoulment of the Flower Court, Protagonist is using your characters as NPCs.
>>
>>54761309
It's not bloated. A system can't decently approximate a universe of possibility with simple rules. Every rule has a reason and most of them are at least logical if not also intuitive.

I agree with your final point.
>>
>>54761325
Oh, I'm a GURPSfag, I know all about simple rules not being adequate. The difference is GURPS is explicitly modular, whereas Pathfinder is and isn't.

All the splatbooks don't help either, and the CRB has horrible internal balance.

I'm not hating on PF, I can see its merits, I'm just disappointed they weren't brave enough to sacrifice some of the horrible stuff from 3.5 while they were at it. There are some great ideas right next to horrible ones and the internal playtests were clearly not adequate.
>>
>>54761354
The problem inherent in your assumption that they should have been brave enough to shuck 3.5's problems is the audience it was aimed at. Pathfinder was explicitly "Don't worry, 3.5 is still alive and kicking!" and Paizo capitalized on a disenfranchised fanbase. It had to be as close as possible while making token attempts to fix outstanding problems, or it would have been false advertising, though admittedly they could have managed to push it a bit further.

That's part of the reason I like Starfinder; they actually have a chance to step away from the bullshit WotC put into 3.5, while still making it a system we're familiar with. And outside of some rules holes, typos, and general editing errors, it looks like I got what I wanted.
>>
>>54761354
What do you mean by explicitly modular? I'm half-asleep.
>>
>>54761417

So GURPS has a whole bunch of rules for anything ranging from flying a spaceship, to hunting and gathering in the stone age. The point of GURPS is that you choose what your setting does/doesn't have and deal with the rules that will affect your game. It's explicitly designed this way, and the core mechanics are very small and quite tight.

Pathfinder/DnD on the other hand it's quite difficult to pull things out of without really breaking the system. Optional rules are great, rules that are really intertwined with each other aren't. There's a whole lot of things you need to know/deal with in DnD that are only there because other things rely on them. 5E ALMOST got this right, but then WoTC fucked it up.
>>
>>54761152

I'm doing some Starfinder homebrew for Orbital Support (Getting your ship to help you, at the cost of Resolve points) as I'm not a huge fan of the current lack of rules for your ship doing much outside of space combat.

The idea is that your ship (And it's weapons/upgrades) affect the sort of bonuses you can invoke (With them scaling with Ship Tier). Currently I'm at the brainstorming stage, attempting to come up with a good number of possible abilities to make the support a ship can provide feel a bit unique. Of course, much of the support won't be usable underground but far from all encounters will happen there.

Any help with brainstorming ship part/orbital support ideas would be fantastic. So far what I've got:

EMP Burst(Weapon with EMP Property): Fort save or lose access to non-analog weapons for a turn.
Make it Glow (Weapon with Irradiate property): Fort save or Nauseate.
Scorched Earth (Weapon with Line property): Long line effect damage.
Orbital Suppression (Weapon with Point or Array): Multi-turn low damage.
Intensify Gravity (Weapon with Tractor Beam): AOE Slow.
Bombing Run(Hanger or Shuttle Bay): Damage blast.
Medical Evac(Shuttle Bay): Retrieve and stabilise a friendly downed character.
Show of Force(Battleships and Dreadnaughts): Fear Effect.
Sensor Sweep(Advanced Sensors): Grant Blindsight in an area

Possible glitch with Personal Upgrades on page 212, nothing seems to restrict you from having all three apply to the same ability. So... official maximum score is 34 for now? Top-end light armor has +8 max Dex, though, no clue where the last two stat points are coming from.

Given the above , I think it may actually be intended.
>>
>>54761903
So, wait, if you wanted to be PURE MUSCLES, you could apply three different +6s to your strength score? That means if you start with 18, you can get 4 from levels, 18 from stat boosters, and +1 if you pick the right theme, for a total of 41. That's stronger than most dragons.

I am writing a starfinder campaign to help myself and whoever other people I get to familiarize with the game. Trouble is, I never GMed with roll20 before so not only do I have to study this new system, I also have to figure out roll20 anew.

I'm new. Tell me what are the best things about Starfinder?

and grenades explode once they hit wherever they have been thrown, so you lob them back before they go boom.

If for some reason it is determined that they go boom before you get to throw them back (no ide awhy they would, arrows don't get to do damage before being returned so I don't see why a grenade would get to do it's on hit before being returned) then you just need to get evasion, then they go boom, you dodge the damage, and then throw it back.

That interpretation is terribly silly, and you know you're splitting hairs and being contrary. Besides, the 'special thrown weapon' thing is also touched upon in the AMMUNITION section:
> "For weapons with other forms of ammunition (such as grenades), ammunition must be purchased separately."
And then the section that touches on grenades in Weapon Types is, you guessed it,
> "Ammunition & Grenades"
Just stop being stubborn and accept that, yes, grenades explode and are ruined when they do damage. It'll save your GM smacking you upside the head when you try to argue it at the table.

Also, continuing the 'this is stupid and you know it' on Grenades being reusable;
> "Grenades, ammunition and OTHER CONSUMABLE ITEMS can benefit from fusion seals, but the fusion seal is destroyed when the item is used."
