Scrap trukk anon here.

Debating what to use for my sprue-built trukk's wheels right now. I have a bunch of old bases lying around that I can't really use for anything, as well as a bunch of unused tiny flying bases.

Any suggestions anons?

Why is /wip/ so dead? Should we lower our standards? Offer praise where none is deserved? I'd like to hear your thoughts.
>>
>>54716138
last 3 Threads were basically, 10 dudes helping a single guy get his Ugly Thicc Marines on a pretty decent TT standard within a few days giving him tons of tips. 3-4 Dudes posting amazing finished stuff.

Everyone else who posted actual WIPs or conversion Ideas were mostly Ignored

People just should offer advice to everyone who put up the effort to properly photograph their dudes instead of just focussing on the same 3 guys
>>
I plan on abusing the group's painting prowess for my metal green tau force, give me some time to mangle up some more units for criticizing.

>People just should offer advice to everyone who put up the effort to properly photograph their dudes instead of just focussing on the same 3 guys
I think we'd have to start lowering standards in terms of photographing their dudes a little, since I suspect most newbies don't know how to do it properly. That or they have shitty cameras like that anon who's building an Ork truck out of sprues and....

What are those white things on the sides and truck-bed anyway?
>>
>>54716508
I'd say focus more on people who arent bloody beginners anymore but still have much to improve on. Thinning Paints is pretty simple, But Telling someone that he should only shade the recesses and not worry to much if a bit spills out since the paint shrinks when it dries isn't obvious but great advice

Ayup lads, it's me again. It's been a good day over here in Sweden! Dug up an old Cairn Wraith that I've been meaning to do something with, and figured I'd actually use one of those vents that comes with the Sector Mechanicus bases. Instead of cluttering up the base it'll be part of the figure instead. The rock that's been sculpted as a base for the wraith will be cut off, and the robe glued onto the vent itself. Pardon the really harsh lighting in this, I just had to take a picture and it's eleven at night. I'll take another few pics tomorrow if anybody's interested.

I'd bite the bullet and buy some cheap toy wheels. Another option would be bottlecaps or as you said bases.
>>
>>54717175
paint looks really thick on the legs and shoulderpads, what brand of paints did you use?

You used White Primer, Im not a big fan of the Citadel White Primer, youd probably be better of using the Black one and then sprinkle a bit white from the top to create a lighting effect

Drill the Bolter Barrels DO IT NAOW

Did you use any shades?

I personally dont like the Bolters being Blue but thats up to you

>>
Heya friends, here's a mini I painted up for myself to use for D&D. It isn't display quality and I didn't unbend the sword since I'm just gonna throw it into my dice bag. Also got a new desk and have my first Warhammer minis coming in the mail shortly. I really wanted to paint up some Nurgle dudes after seeing everyone's. Hope the pic with Mechagodzilla makes up for the blurriness of the pic.

>>54716138
I def don't think we should lower standards here. Being critical and telling how it is helps more than what they do over in the minipainting reddit. I go there to laugh since there's so many painters there that absolutely BLOW ASS yet they still get their dicks sucked.

>>54717175
Paint looks a bit thick there bud. Remember to take your time to make sure it doesn't go where you don't want it to. I like the color scheme!

It's tough to match a base to the bones material base. I've been doing the bases in all black for my D&D minis since they all match that way. They also match better with the WOTC and Pathfinder minis, which are done in the same way.

To compensate, I've been working on dungeon tiles and more 3d effects for dungeons.

>>
i found this lil baby for sale at a FLGS. I adopted him.
>>
>>54719109
Not a mistake at all. The blue looks like you haven't used enough thin coats on the base colour, keep going until you get a nice smooth, clean colour. Make sure you get full coverage too.

Your highlights are in pretty much the right place which is great, you'll get better at making them neat in time. you can always go in with the base colour and neaten up mistakes.

Hell yeah it does.

Here's some motivation for you. The first mini I ever painted and one I finished last week.

I was shit when I started but I loved painting, still do, it's a kinda relaxing zen sort of thing, so I stuck with it. Occasionally watching tutorials and trying new techniques helps. Master them one at a time though.

Start with baby steps and a clear head, and you'll be surprised with what you can do after enough practice.

Whats a good base paint for a darker teal? Don't care what brand, I want to airbrush the paint though. Maybe I could highlight with seafoam green? That might look too much like a ghetto Alpha legion so maybe a grey highlight over a blueish base could keep it toned down?

>>54719390
Thanks! I have done about two dozen Reaper Bones models. In general I think they're pretty good quality considering the price, regardless of size. The larger models have the issue of having seam lines and gaps that are more obvious due to the size. And Bones material is notoriously difficult to carve and edit. But for D&D play where you'll actually be using them, the big ones and the small ones are both great. Also you don't feel bad for going single color + wash + drybrush since it's not like the detail is going to be crazy anyways.

>Which dragon is that?
If I recall correctly it's the Silver Dragon. I wish they had a dragon that's similar in pose with the classic D&D blue dragon rhino horn. But you can't have everything.

Alright I need your help WIP., I'm going to finally start my chaos Primaris force now that multi-part Intercessors and Gravis are here, but I have a little dilemma. I'm making basic CSM with Chaos Warrior bits, using the new Death Guard models stock with a few swaps with Putrid Blightkings, but I'm going to try to make a "Berserker conversion kit" using:
- Blood Warrior front torso bit and arms
- FW Red Butcher chain axe
- Chainsword blade
- FW WE pads

I acquired all the bits I need to test for one with a chopped up Primaris and it worked, but now I'm going to need to the task of making a mold and casting the parts. So can someone please tell me a) a good tutorial of making the mold from bluestuff and b) what mixture of greenstuff and milliput is needed for casting? Thanks.

I like where its at, considering a nuln oil coat to cut down the shine... but this super gloss look wont fit any of the rest of my army. I've got a bunch of stealth suits, some crisis and some xv9s. So I want to get into painting in a few months once I've got the money to spend, and I'm wondering if I can get some advice on the things I would need to buy at a bare minimum to start doing this with any hope of competence.

I think I'm going to get the little Army Painted three brush wargaming bundle, as well as some of the other basics, but are there any things you would highly recommend for a beginner? I'll still be on a budget so cheaper is preferred but I understand that's not always viable.
>>
>>54720923

>>
>>54720923
If you want to do it just to have it I say go for it, I actually really like the color, but if you're planning the field that thing I'd tone it down just because it would be so drastically different from your army.
>>
>>54721320

What kind of miniatures are you considering getting started with? With any miniatures the bare minimum would be paint, brushes, and primer. Glue is depending on what you get and you'll need some kind of blade if you want to remove moldlines.
>>
>>54721408
40k miniatures to start with, they're what got me interested to start
>>
>>54721511
People like to bitch about the price of GW paints, but they are quality paints. That said Vallejo makes good model paint as well and can be found at most game stores/hobby shops

If you want to play 40k, then GW has some great deals in their 'Start Collecting!' boxes.

If you're just interested in the hobby side then they do make small snapfit boxes with 3 models. Easy-to-Build or something to that effect which lets you dip your toes.

I've started my pre-game so I wont be hanging around much. Other anons will be happy to help

Your first minis will SUCK, learn from them and get better. No one here started out brilliantly, despite how they act
>>
>>54721511
Cool cool. So most likely you'll be painting plastic, might wanna grab some plastic glue. If its metal, super glue will do. I use the Army Painter stuff (paint, primer, some of their brushes) and I think they're well-suited to beginners. Def get an X-Acto knife/blade to get rid of moldlines and other stuff. Other than that you'll need some nippers to get things off of sprues. Try looking up a gundam building kit on Amazon, they're usually not that expensive and contain multiple tools that'll come in handy sooner or later. Once you're more advanced or even at the beginning if you want, grab some Kneaditite/Greenstuff to fill gaps and such. Are you planning on doing bases? Think of an idea of want you'd want to do for those and look up a video. There's a shitload of basing tuts and they usually include what materials you'll need to do that kind of base.
>>
>>54721622
Thanks a lot anon, I appreciate the tips

>>54721687
Yea I'd want to do basing but only on minis that I plan to be using long term. I'd like to at least get to a point with my painting where it's not embarrassing before I start that up. There was a video I saw that showed how to do snow that I liked a lot which I think I'll do for my first completed army.
>>
>>54721768
Sounds cool (literally). There's plenty of videos on snow bases and tons of ways to do them so I'm sure you'll find a technique you'll like. Just remember the basics when you start out and practice a lot. What army are you starting?
>>
>>54721932
Space Marines, which I know is the bland common man's choice. I was torn for a long time, but it seems like a good army for beginners and after some time browsing the general I came up with my own Chapter I want to make. I was thinking on IG, Tau, and Necrons for a while too but factors like the cost of a proper army under each list made me settle on SM. Once I settle into the hobby and have some more money I can put into the hobby I might branch out to something else too.

>>
>>54722223
I'm toying around on ideas for a name, the one on the image is a placeholder for now, but pic related is their rough color scheme.

I've been chewing on a few ideas as far as their lineage, I think I've settled on them being a Dark Angels successor from the Ultima Founding, so they'll be all Primaris Marines.

As far as fluff goes I like the idea that their Chapter Master, upon learning the nature of the Fallen and the secrecy kept by their progenitors, he thought that as important as hunting the Fallen were, it was also important for them to do good within the Imperium and rebuild some of the trust between their Chapters. As a result they still have a company dedicated to hunting the Fallen, but they strive to act as a kind of bridge between the other Dark Angel successors and the rest of the Imperium.

The problem is I want them to play as a standard SM army and pull from the Chapter tactics of another Chapter to show that change of mindset and while that'll probably go fine on me just bringing my dudes to play, I'm worried that if I get into fluff talk with people it'll seem really Donut Steel. I'm still working with some other ideas because of this.

It's hard to tell because it's a really shitty picture, but if the yellow thing is the sash, I would say try blacklining the border between sash and armour with black wash, or if you think that'll look too strong, try a brown or even purple wash. Just something dark to make the border stronger. You could also try a starker highlight around the edge of the sash that is adjacent to the armour if that doesn't work, or it it is actually already blacklined and I just can't tell from the pic. The sash doesn't read as particularly evenly finished or strongly highlighted in the pic at least.

New to airbrushing, picked up a Badger 105. I feel like I'm getting the hang of it but I have one (stupid) question.

It's a dual action trigger, gravity fed airbrush. You push down, air comes out. You pull back, paint comes out. Are you supposed to push down variable amounts for more/less air like you do pulling back for paint, or just handle variable amounts of air at the pressure regulator on your air compressor?
>>
>>54725445
Looking real there, anon.

>It's a dual action trigger, gravity fed airbrush. You push down, air comes out. You pull back, paint comes out.
>Are you supposed to push down variable amounts for more/less air like you do pulling back for paint, or just handle variable amounts of air at the pressure regulator on your air compressor?
You can do both.
You regulate the maximum pressure you'll get at the compressor side, but you can certainly control the airflow like you do the paint flow with the trigger.
It takes practice, like everything with an airbrush, but it can be quite useful.
>>
>>54725772

Hmm okay, because the air definitely feels like its an all or nothing thing. Maybe my trigger is sticky or, more likely, I'm just extremely new to it and don't know what I'm doing just yet.

>>
>>54718316
Very, very nice.

I have a question regarding magnets. So I was watching this video, and this guy was talking about using magnets to store minis. He glues magnets to the bottom of them, and then puts a sheet of some magnet material in a plastic container. In the video, he puts the minis in the container, minis stick to the bottom, don't move while he carries the container. Guy says it's better than using foam containers.

Does anyone use this method? what brand/size do you use?

I went and got some magnets and a magnetic adhesive sheet from Michaels. both were of the "promag" brand, but they seem really weak. they don't stick to each other (the magnets slide off) and they just barely stick to the refrigerator.
>>
>>54725784
It's nowhere near as variable as the paint flow, you've only got a small traverse to play with.
>>
>>54719620
Well he's got no torso, for a start.
>>
>>54725805

I'm in the process of magnetizing my entire army for transport and my primary magnet size is 6x2mm. I've played with some 3x2mm but they aren't as strong and I'm not a fan.

I get my magnets through eBay for dirt cheap, but I've recently ordered some 6x2mm n42 and n52 magnets through KJ Magnets. The nX indicates magnet strength, and all ones I have from eBay are n35, so I wanted to play with different strengths. Primarily for magnetizing metal models since they weigh significantly more, and while one 6x2mm n35 magnet will hold a plastic terminator in place without issue, it won't do the same for a metal terminator.
>>
>>54725871
this

you will get a bigger effect out of adjusting the air on your regulator or compressor

>>54725805
I do much the same, some in plastic and others in foam trays for extra protection. I go on amazon and find thick magnetic sheets and epoxy metal washers to bases,by gluing them to the base and setting them on the sheet with a piece of plastic between (such as a sandwich bag) you can get a very strong, sturdy bond that resists shifting.
I recommend putting some thin foam around the sides of your container, though. just for that extra protection.

thanks boys

as for how long it took, I've been pretty busy with work and whatnot, took me several days as I painted in sections (armor, then shade/highlight, trims, shoulder pads, etc etc)

To be frank I love taking my sweet time with these, prolongs the value of DI for me

here's the ancient before I applied Screaming Skull highlights to his base and Steel Legion drab to the rim of the base, and all the nurlgle's rot/BloodGod glazes on the horns

I made a bit of a dumb mistake and need advice on how to fix it. Me and a friend recently got into WH40k, and knowing nothing except what factions we wanted, went and bought a Start Collecting set and some paints. I only really got the paints because the guy at the GW shop was very pushy, and now I'm having an issue with the amount - my friend's fine because Necron don't really need many colours to look proper, while Skitarii apparently have like 30 different paints as per Duncan's videos. I'm missing things like the blue, gold/brass, and the inside of the coat, which are pretty major parts of the figure. What is the minimum paints I need for it to look passable?

Currently I have Nuln Oil, Runefang Steel, Eshin Grey, Evil Sunz Scarlet, Screaming Skull, and Rhinox Hide (and Caliban Green, Moot Green, Warpstone Glow from the Necron set).

I THINK I need Guilliman Blue and Brass Scorpion at the least, but I'm unsure. What else do I need so I can avoid buying the AdMech paint bundle?
>>
>>54730952

yeah, been trying to keep a steady hand and quick brushstrokes when applying the Calg blue highlights, and then cleaning up with Mac Blue whenever the lines got too thick, still needs practicing
>>
>>54731006
Mix your paints together for highlighting.
Plan your model colourscheme and decide what extra colours you really need, so long as you have 1 of each colour and a black/white you should be fine
>>
>>54731007
like I said mate, still think both models look great, you should give yourself a pat on the back

you dont need all that shit you can have fine looking skitarii with just about the paints in your Pic and some shades.

Also GW Employees are trimmed to shill and sell you as much as they can.

I notice that with my local GW it got 2 guys the older storeowner is pretty chill and gives real advice that might limit his sales. The new guy is like buy more "buy more buy more official Games Workshop stuff. Why dont you get this too? You really should! Oh you dont? Well your loss its much better with."

so dont visit the store until you know exactly what you want/need
>>
>>54731028
Will do. I didn't know if paint mixing was something that's done with these kinds since there's so many different ones.

>>54731094
>trimmed to shill
Yeah, I narrowly escaped him pushing me a brush set and clippers despite me repeatedly saying I had them already. I knew what I wanted, I just wasn't familiar with that store; I usually went to a third-party store to browse but there was no point in driving there again when the GW was 5 minutes away.
>>
>>54731006
Congratulation with not starting with marines, as the first thing.

Now, take it easy. Paints aren't expensive, but take your time and learn to use what you have before buying more stuff, you can always strip them later. Be sure to build and clean your models correctly, it's more important than being a good painter, that will take time

Alternatively:
Arcaic Latin: irato feli ne provoca!
More modern latin: cave (cavete if it's plural) irato feli provoces! (provocetis if plural).
This is imperative, the other one was a periphrastic passive.

As for the symbol, why not something like the White Panthers? (if you're going for the feline theme?). I don't know about squad markings, I'm not experienced enough with marines for that

I know its tempting to put the base material on the rim of the base too, but I think it never looks good
I advise scraping it and painting the rim a solid colour. Maybe some little rocks/grass on the base itself as well
The model is great-looking, so a few improvments to the base will pull it into awesome-tier

>>
>>54732525
I did the hard edge highlights on both the gray and purple but I guess it's a bit too subtle to show up in pictures. I'll probably go over most of it with a lighter purple to really get it to pop.

The metals are actually pretty thin. I do them over a brown base coat which I think is why they look thick and splotchy. The silver parts are all just base coated, no shading yet,so hopefully it'll look better once I get a wash and some highlighting on it.

It's garbage, I actually had to double check if this was a joke picture or not. I don't actually know where to begin on how awful this looks. Is that a fucking tennis racket handle?

The time and effort you have invested into salvaging old beat up models, cutting plasticard (poorly), then green stuffing it all together with something you found in the trash could of been invested in meaningful work around the house. You then could of rewarded yourself from that work and bought the actual Manticore kit instead of creating this abomination of a "conversion".

harsh. I think it might look ok after a basecoat - its a bit hard to tell what the texture of the wood is/how smooth it will look. I genuinely think this is a cool idea anon, but maybe there's more work to do to clean up and smooth out surfaces

I try to have two projects going, one of which I am trying really hard to get everything right (usually more detailed miniatures with lots of fiddly parts, for example Dark Eldar for me currently) and another where I am taking it less seriously and making more use of washes and drybrushing (usually on "cleaner" simpler models or a bunch of really similar looking mooks, which for me right now is a force of goblins and trolls for AoS). That way when I finish a squad or two of the more time consuming miniatures and am being really exacting about fixing mistakes, I can reward myself with a quick to paint unit from the other project. I find I get a lot more done because I am allowing myself to sort of let it all hang out half the time.
>>
>>54733289
I do like this Anon does >>54733379 I just put on some 40k lore videos (mostly Arch Warhammer) and just paint a few dudes, or try to aim for goals such as; paint all metal on the dudes, paint all the cloth, and so on
>>
>>54733264

>>
>>54733289
Painting's how I defrag after a long day. Put on some music, an audiobook, a podcast, a battle report, etc on and just zone out.

It's not a race, man. Just go at your own pace. I've had a leman russ on my desk for the past two weeks.
>>
>>54723739
I just magnetized this kit. Cut off the square sticking up parts on the gun arms, and drill where they were to insert magnet, then in the arm socket. Dont even bother to magnetize where the flamer or minigun meet up with the arm intake, just magnets where the actual gun connects is enough.
>>
>>54733419
That makes sense. I got through normal marines pretty well. The stripes and trim on the Rubrics are hard for me due to unsteady hands. The amount of times I've had to repaint blue and gold is frustrating...

Maybe I'll pick up some Tzaangors that I care less about.
>>
>>54733362

Wow my man. That writing looks amazing! The whole model looks wonderful. How did you get the writing so clean looking?

I don't think guns should be a default solution and I don't even own one, I was just saying most off-the rails assholes I have met seem to have gotten that way at least partially out of a lack of perceived consequence to them personally. There really is a middle ground between sucking people off for mediocre work and being a straight up jerk, and we all have to find it.

Yeah, I went down to my nearest GW and talked to the resident blackshirt about it, since the bases I'm using are the old slot bases. His recommendation was that if I'm going to cut the bases in half, then I should glue put another base on the inside to make it actually look like wheels.

Here's a pic of what I've done so far, along with my first Ork Warboss (from way back in 3e) and another Gorkamorka-era trukk for size comparison.

On a related note, I'm planning on making a mob of Bugboyz aka Ork genestealer hybrids for my army. Any suggestions on how I should convert them fellow anons?

Scored a second hand Nid model that was assembled by an actual retard. What's the best way to undo super glued joints? Freeze it?

Been busy with work lately but thought I'd post a pic to show where I last left off and I'll see how much I can get done today

Also before anyone ask why mold lines and such
I plan to paint them like cracks and dents in the armor on typhus

Acetone works extremely well with metal. Don't use it on plastic though, acetone would melt it

Thanks.

The writing is literally just a wobbly line with a 000 though. Nothing special.

Good-looking wheels are incredibly hard to do.

You can get resin ones, but they tend to cost a lot of money and be really prone to chipping.

You can buy a GW kit, but that kind of defeats most of the point of scratch-building.

You could buy GW bits from a bits seller, but that's expensive and it's hard to find ones which have wheels in stock.

You could salvage them from historical / modern kits, but they tend to look too skinny and it's not cheap. OK ones I've found are the Miniart ZIS-6 wheels and the Bronco Sd.Kfz 221 ones (made from ABS rather than HIPS I think, so you need specialist cement to glue them).

You could get them off toy cars, but it's hard to find ones which look good and they are inevitably made of soft plastic which doesn't take paint well.

You can make your own. Cutting circles in plasticard seems to be a mysterious art which I am unable to master, so you pretty much need to work with bases, game counters and similar. I find GW bases tend to look too much like bases, but renedra ones are useful as are these things: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Draughts-Pieces-23mm-Checkers-Plastic-Board-Game-Numeracy-Teaching-12-colors-/262220818216?var=560976467124&_trksid=p2056016.m2516.l5255

You will need to make some tread for home made wheels. Bits of sprue can actually look surprisingly good if you cut them neatly and file them a bit. A quicker option I found was to get some soft textured plasticard with a brick pattern and cut a strip to wrap around the rim. Gives a shallow but fairly convincing tread effect. Unfortunately, I'm afraid I can't identify where the stuff I use came from as I got it years ago.

I bought some Ninja All-Stars minis today, but looking at the Super Dungeon explore 1st edition stuff I have, the sweet textured bases they have been ruined by the tabs that hold the minis in place.

Do you guys think I'd be better off rebasing by pinning the minis to another companies bases (and could you point someone in the right direction for EU suppliers?) or should I just try to make the best of a bad job with hobby basing materials like flock or sand?
Time isn't really an issue, but keeping with the anime-ish scale and theme might be. What do you think?

Dubious. I haven't used a Patriot, but Badger have a bit of a reputation as second-rate airbrushes compared to Iwata and H&S. They have a fiddly air feed system which needs adaptors to connect to basically anything, they aren't as easy to clean as other brands (and I find that about 50% of the time I am working with my airbrush is spent cleaning it) and many people report that their quality control on the less essential parts isn't great. I'm also dubious about that 'two step' needle thing. Any dual action airbrush should let you vary the width of your spray and it seems that what the Badger system mostly does is make the transition from thick to thin very abrupt.

That said, it seems like a good price.

See >>54734672 for what I've come up with for easily made 'half-wheels', which I plan on putting on the inside of the trukk's carriage instead of the outside.

What do you think?

I have almost all the models needed for my 2000 point list. Now I just need to paint it all. This is about 1200 points painted already.

Not a clue. Looks like those super cheap knight dudes you'd find with a toy castle set in the 90s or something.

Currently deciding what to use as a base I might try Kantor Blue just for giggles.

Is molding your own bases as simple and cost effective a way of getting complex textured bases as it seems?
Are there any pitfalls I should be aware of?
