Every legion has pros and cons my friend. I don't think you should sweat picking too much until the CSM codex comes out though, there's still plenty of neat things to be revealed which might change your mind.

My favorite Legion is Emperor's Children, which I usually run as a gun line, but with the preview for Emperor's Children I'm starting to think that perhaps I've been wrong and I should run them as a mobile force that is effective at all ranges.

Even though I've played a ton of games with a blob of EC that I shoot across the table with the new stuff has me thinking about new tactics, it's pretty exciting.

Just started in 8th and really loving the psychic phase, however I am getting Death Guard at the moment and I'm not sure if they're a very heavy psychic army.

Could you run quite a few sorcerers in your Death Guard list? Hmm maybe that will be my unique Vectorum/Take on it. A coven of Adjvective Nounverbs leading the thing.

You can give a squad of 5, three Storm Bolters and power maul for the leader for 10 points while a single flamer is 9 points.

The 3rd and 2nd edition models predate the current plastics and are better. In fact now that I FLASHBACK, it was the first catachan plastics box that really started fucking things up.

Tell me about the Blood Angels.

I've been wanting to make a Marine army, but I can't really decide on what I want. I like the lore of the Salamanders, being cool chill dudes, and all that fire and such, though I'm not too sure on the practicality of fire in this current edition, plus the only fire units out of the Primaris lineup are the Agressors, and there are no options for Primaris melta.

Dark Angels seem neat, and plasma makes for a reliable all rounder, especially with Hellblasters being a thing, and they would fit lore wise with the Dark Angels, but my friend group already has a DA player.

Raptors seems cool too, and they would really fit with the tactical feeling of Reivers and Intercessors. I've also considered Deathwatch but I'm not sure on them, as it kind of seems like model count is what matters in this edition.

Also have considered making a mech infantry guard regiment possibly. How well does that work out? Like not all vehicle dependent, but infantry units in lots of dedicated transports instead.

Penitente Engines are awesome but are a bitch to assemble. I recommend getting the recast of those.

In particular, you're looking for the Dark Millenium starter ($160), Know No Fear ($80), or First Strike ($40) starters. They all come with a bunch of loyalist primaris marines and lots of nurgle goodness. They're a great bang for your buck, especially if you're okay getting your arms dirty with conversion work or want to split it with a friend.

I mean, Mars in that situation wouldn't be terrible since a splash of colour might be nice, but if you really want to blend in and don't want to run the Christmas Army risk you could go for Stygies. Black robes, dark red armour. Or Agripinaa, dark grey robes, brighter silver armour and red underfabrics and cables.

Vostroyan were 100% after the plastics as they were released for a particular campaign and the Tau were long out by then. Tanith 1st and Only I also think were post cadia plastics since they were pretty much just a GW store thing and I recall them being introduced after I got seriously into the game which was right before the 3E guard codex dropped.

Great value anon here, it got some interest in the last thread so I thought I'd post the story, so about a month ago someone came into my LGS and just put a bucket of stuff down, telling the manager he can sell it as a bargain bin, at first it looked like a lot of junk, but as my group dug through it we realized it was a gold mine, the guy had left super rare or valuable models just laying in there, a couple weeks later another guy did a dumb before he moved away, fucker put literally entire armies in there, all $.75 a model or less in a bundle, I spent a long long time looking through there, I'd wait about a week between plundering to give other people chances, eventually I spent about 30-40 dollars and gotl literally a bucket of models, some of them were ugly and required a lot of work but it was worth it, lots of them were broke or ugly kitbashes, lord had a nasty slick base coat I had to strip like the one brown scion
Things obtained included;

Guard didn't get a 4th edition codex.

The plastic cadian infantry came out in june '03, alongside the defiler. The rest of the line trickled in up until the 3.5 guard codex came out, later that year.

First things first, you should go down on their 40k day, or when people tend to play.
You should look around first. Decline any assistance. Just look around.
See if you can find a group of guys playing. If there are some walk past and just look at the other tables, then come back to any of them and ask if it's okay if you watch. Don't mention more than that.
Also look around to see if anyone's building or painting, just so you can see it being done in person.
Also ask what the standard point value at the FLGS is for 40k games.

You are looking to see if this hobby is right for you.
You also may change your mind about several things later, so buying stuff now doesn't help you.

Ask questions about basic games stuff, but do not take advice on what army to play, what units to buy or what tactics to use.
You are looking to build any army for yourself, not copy someone else.

If you are sure you want to play CSM plus daemons, then download the rulebook from the mega link in the OP, and also the chaos index.
Read the main rules plus some of the advanced, then look over your codex. (the chaos index right now, CSM book comes out the 19th)

Look at the units you like and if you make a list, leave 25% of it open so you can add stuff you need that you might be lacking.
Now you've got a shopping list. Do some more research before you jump in, and look for deals if you can.

Is it just me or are inceptor squads hot garbage. I feel like they really paid for having deep strike. 180 points when you can get agressors for 129 with more firepower. A smart opponent is never going to make them viable for character assassination, and they die pretty easy. Vypers and War Walkers. War walkers also look like ass so double don't get them. If you want weapons platforms get the FW Hornets or wasps.

I don't know how many units you plan on buying but you're going to want a transport for the guardians, wraithblades, and spiritseer so i'd pass on those if you're not going to buy another wave serpent.

Warlock needs a unit to buff since his best abilities are conceal or it's melee equivalent. At this point you've got exactly one unit that he can help (fire prism) and it's really not worth a 37 point model escorting it. Running 2 autarchs and a farseer in 2k and under is a bad idea since they're expensive and need units that actually deal damage to buff effectively.

I would have thought the War Walkers would be decent since they're ~100 points each when equipped with dual AMLs. I mainly fight nids, so Vypers would do a similar job, but have the speed to kite.
