I could use some feedback and tips on how to improve my nurgle cucks. I am thinking:
- Wash the armor with SEPIA or QuickShade-Light tone
- Add highlights on the mutations
- Wash swords with darktone
- add rust streaks and silver+dark chips and perhaps some washes here
- Paint eyes/lenses red/orange

I should have thought the color scheme through.. FUCK

Previously an anon made a comment to add more green, but wouldnt that turn this is into Nurgle Dark Angels scheme?

Also primer went on like shit so i had to strip and redid it. Fuckin hassle that was.

/wipg/, i'd like to put forward a theory.
Celestra grey and dryad bark represent the duality of man.
Celestra grey represents all of the worst things about humanity. Anger, jealousy, but mostly anger.
On the other hand, dryad bark represents the very best of humanity. Because it's just so damn easy to get smooth coats with.

>>

If you got started again youd be really shitty for a few months but you start to get a feel for it after a while. Painting a miniature you can look at and go "oh hell yeah, this guy looks great" is such a good feeling. Make sure you have friends or family doing it with you. My father taught me how to build models when I was a kid and his lessons have stuck with me since. Friends are good because theyll tell you what you need to do better without being cunts about it.

Blood Ravens lets you conceivably make Tarkus your Captain. So there's that going for it.
>>
>>54444858
Squads are 10 man now including sergeant.

So if you want Vox operators you have up to 4. Vox operators extend the radius Orders are applied within by officers moving by the squad, they aren't necessarily something you always need to bring.

Thank you VERY much !

QUESTIONS
1. Lens colour for imperial fists
2. how would I nurglify the bases these fists have, so that they would suit the Death Guard?
3. can I use sepia, and brown washes to Non metallic gold the gold fabric on the banner? Or should I use glazes of browns.

>Lens colour for imperial fists

I'm leaning towards green. Not sure how nice that will look on the white helmets, but it seems like it would go well with yellow ones.
>>
>>54445992
>1. Lens colour for imperial fists
Green. Alternately sky blue.
>2. how would I nurglify the bases these fists have, so that they would suit the Death Guard?
Maybe adding weathering via sponge technique? They alredy look weathered, but unless you want to do big rusty holes with nurglings poking out of them I think the easiest visual shorthand would be puss or some other organic debris maybe.
>3. can I use sepia, and brown washes to Non metallic gold the gold fabric on the banner? Or should I use glazes of browns.
You can use both I guess, it just depends on what you are doing. You'll probably have to paint the same way with both though since nmm effects require a lot of control. So if you idea was a wash and then you are done I don't think that's gonna work.

Drybrush or highlight the nurgling with nurgling green, and then put a good amount of violet shade on his belly and between his fat folds put flesh shade. Nurgle daemons are all about shading
>>
>>54446153
Blood is too bright, looks almost cartoonish. Dried blood is darker than that. Maybe try to add some spots to it? The cloth also looks awfully clean.
>>
>>54446847
For the red, you can use red ink or some translucent red (tamiya clear red for example) over a bright metal base, or just work up from black to bright red with a tiny white highlight or a coat of gloss varnish.

Metal can be done with a blue wash over silver. The GW nightshade one works fine. I think there's also a few companies which do blue metallics.

The flayed skin is just pale skin with a little purple / crimson shading to tie it into the colour scheme and stop it looking flat.

So step by step, how would I go about that after black primer?

>>54447173
Ignore the faggot.

Vallejo do metallic red paints, pick up one of those and you have your armour. No fucking around with clear paints needed.
>>
>>54447173
Use red primer

White if not that

Black primer should be the last thing you use.

If you must use black primer for some reason I would do a heavy drybrush of the citadel red foundation paint, then a glaze of red and accept that your dudes are going to be darker red

Actually now that I look at them again the illustration and photo from the book have two different looks. If you want your boys bright red like the drawing than you would really really (seriously) want a primer that wasn't black. If you want results like the photo example than black would be ok.

So way I see it the easy options are from easiest to least
- prime red, wash red, wash black, highlight
- Prime black, drybrush base red, drybrush brighter red, glaze red, wash black, highlight
- prime black and just do metallic red if you want bright n shiny boys
Hope that's helpful. Painting a bright red over black is a bad idea.
>>
>>54447267
There's one downside, namely that the Vallejo metallic red isn't very red, it's more of a pink. A light coating of a red wash will turn it a lovely deep red, but the paint itself is not a deep red.
>>
>>54447267
colored metallic paints usually only have weak colors at best. Using tamiya clear or a regular old ink gives much stronger colors.

In any way I don't think metallic red is the right way to go at all.
This >>54446847 looks like it's just black highlighted with red edge highlights.
The same way the regular Deldar scheme is just black highlighted with turquoise edge highlights.
>>
>>54445992

Unrelated to your questions, but I have to say I think you overdid it on the legs. Those marines look like they just slogged through mud and rain less than an hour ago, which really doesn't match up with the basing they've got. If their legs and boots are dirty then it should look drier and not reach so far up.
>>
>>54447355
There are a few exception, from Vallejo their Arctic Blue metallic is really deep blue, not as nice as a coat of clear over silver, but still a really nice blue.
A number of Scale75 Alchemy metallics are rather nice too, but again, the clear over silver is hard to beat, but the Alchemy paints are available in far more colours.

In retrospect, unless I just do the black with red (which I think is boring), it'll end up looking too much like a craftworld bitch elf. Pic related might be cooler. I think they're the dying suns kabal, which Duncan has a guide for. Only worry now is that it'll look too much like clown elves.

Do you think anyone would bitch if I used Deathwatch marines as Devastator Sergeants?
I'm in desperate need of some and the little bit on the Mark 8 backpack seems enough like a signum that I'm tempted to use the few Deathwatch guys I got as Devastator Sergeants. What do you guys think? Yea or nay? I don't have a use for the Deathwatch lads since I don't plan to collect the army.
>>
I'm going to start an Stormcast army themed around fire and ancient warriors. I'm thinking about making the armor golden or silver with Nihilak Oxide to make it appear rusty and old, and with Khorne red for details.

What do you think would look better for them, Retributor Gold or Leadbelcher as the base for the armor? Also, any ideas to spice up the theme?
>>
So this just arrived at my post office, gonna pick him up tomorrow. He'll be incorporated into the Dark Mechanicus/CSM warband thing that I've posted to hell and back about.
HOWEVER.
I think that one of these arms have to be replaced somehow. I took a look at the stuff I've got going on, and while I never intended them to be game legal, they sure are lacking in firepower and have way too much in the way of melee weaponry. Any good suggestions on weapons that might fit either hand? I've never bought an Ogryn before, so I'm not really sure about the size of it.

The bone-white hellguns are a nice touch.

Any ideas for the bases?
>>
How hard is it to strip bases? They were the first thing I did and I've only managed to paint a few models. I'm not bothered to paint them in this heat, not even a wet palette makes it tolerable. I want to play and then paint my stuff when the weather becomes bearable again.
I stuck this: http://elementgames.co.uk/paints-hobby-and-scenery/bases-for-miniatures/basing-and-accessories/battlefields-ash-grey with PVA to my bases, primed them, added another PVA layer to them and then drybrushed them. How hard will that be to remove and how do I go about doing it? I'm just going to use one of the texture paints after I actually paint my models.

I'd add scrapes and scratches, like the tanks has been going through walls.
Maybe even add small pieces of debris to show that, but at least make the dust that settled on it and the dirt on the tracks match the rest of your army. If nothing else seeing the army as a whole should get the point across.

>I need bases for Fire Warriors and Crisis Suits.
those are 25 and 40mm respectively right?
Most people will have loads of extra 25mm bases. If you know a player that's been at this for a while just ask for a few.
Back in the day the bases came on a sprue of four and GW would just chuck a sprue in every blister and sometimes even put extra in the boxes. And now that 32mm is a thing all the people who have been hoarding Space Marines have useless bases too.
Don't think you'll need to buy 25mm.

You can get all the bases from GW of course but they are relatively expensive for what they are.
If you are gonna go with a special theme and need new bases anyway you could also look into resin bases. Might be nice to get new bases that are already fully sculpted.

Another option are bits sellers. They just sell the parts of the models, so the bases are kind of left over, they usually sell them for less than GW themselves.

You can also get plastic bases from other manufactuers or some no name china knockoff. The exact height or the bevel of the base may not match then though.
If you just want cheap bases and don't care about the edge you could also use mdf bases or renedra ones.

7/10, not bad m8, try painting the armor edges in 2-3 steps (as in use a brighter and thinner line with each next highlight, like in pic related) , that would make it look much smoother, but as far as brush control goes - not bad.

Can anyone with a pot of Khorne Red tell me if the paint smudges at all when touched?

I've been trying out a red-white quartered scheme for my SMs, but the VMC Flat Red I tried out not only covers terribly, but it smudges over the adjacent white at the slightest touch even after days of drying.

It isn't the primer or the mini itself causing the problem, since after a bit of experimentation, the other paints either didn't smudge at all, or had to be damn near scraped for the pigment to shift.

How are these looking for my first miniatures?

I feel like I might rely on washes A LOT to create shade, i'm also pretty intimidated by the brush control required to edge highlight so I've left that for another time

(I also took the picture in pretty much 100% yellow light so the colours may be effected very slightly)
>>
>>54452999
looks pretty good, just add some edge highlighting to some of it, base it, and take them to the tabletop. :)
>>
>>54452999

Everyone relies on washes a lot to create shading, that's what they are made for
>>
Where does everyone get those green surface things with the grids on them what are you call?
>>
>>54452999

For your first miniatures, pretty damn solid. Washes are purpose meant to give you shading, so don't feel guilty or something for using them.

As for edge highlighting, it can seem intimidating, but the principles are fairly straightforward, and a lot just comes down to doing it until it feels natural.

DESU the most difficult aspect of edge highlighting to get consistence is paint thinning. You really want the paint you use to be thin enough to provide natural transitions in colour, but not so thin it acts like a wash and sinks into the recesses.

I want to replicate the green robes and orange glow (for plasma ect.) of the good Biologis here for my Admech. How do you do orange weapon glow?

I was thinking about using DWForest, then Athonian Camoshade, then highlight Ogryn Camo for my green, but I'm worried that would be a shade too light and look shit on vehicles that aren't the Nurgle puked-on look. Would doing one base layer of Kaballite Green under the DWF darken down the final green at all, or are base paints wholly opaque?

Can I do just One Thin Coat of each base over primer if so, or two of each?

At the end of the day it's not something either of us could stop if we wanted to. I wouldn't personally do it mainly for, well, it just feels kind of dirty to me, but I think it'd be better in this situation to just make false shell via plasticard or greenstuff. Not only is it less butchering, which the beetles would probably appreciate, but you wouldn't have to worry about the shell not withstanding over time or being too big/small.

This is probably a really dumb question but how do you get a nice clean cut from sprues?

I get a lot of excess chunks, dents and marks after removing them with the detail cutters.
>>
>>54458081
Always put the flat side of your cutters towards the piece. It's normal to have to smooth the area with a knife and file.
>>
>>54458081
I do it gunpla style

>clip far away from piece
>clip closer to the piece
>sand smooth

Don't even risk it with a knife. The chance of carving out a divot is too high for my comfort
>>
>>54458158

I've been placing the flat side completely against the piece. Am I putting it too close and that's why it occasionally rips off a chunk?

Also these are my first cutters but I'm guessing the blade can run dull as well after prolonged use right?

So on this Hasslefree site, I assume all of these mini's must be 32mm besides the ones in the 40m+ section? I don't see anything indicating mini sizes. I'd hate for my chapter master's hookers to be taller than him
>>
>>54458263
>ripping off chunks

Cutter is too close and too shitty.

If you have shitty cutters because you're part of the 99% of hobbyers who don't spend $100 on a Godhand Ultimate Nippers clippers, then simply clip the piece off the sprue, but with a little bit of sprue left on the piece.

Then when the sprue is off, slowly and carefully clip it with a SECOND pair of higher quality clippers that have sharp blades flush with the model. Then clean with a knife and sandpaper or fill with putty as needed.

The only way to get a clean cut without needing a knife or sandpaper is with the before mentioned $50-100 clippers, they are delicate one thin blade, one side only flush cutters that are only meant for plastic models and only come from Japan. Either Godhand or Tamiya. Even then you sometimes need sandpaper.

My advice is to just buy a second pair of $25 or $35 cutters from Tamiya or Xuron. The people who don't spend that much money on tools will scoff and say they're useless, but they've never used a Godhand. Go google youtube videos to see how clean they cut.

Are they required? No. You are better off using two pairs of $5 clippers and some cheap sandpaper sticks. I bought the Godhand for $65 which was a steal compared to $90, and while it is nice, I still use sandpaper afterwards defeating the whole purpose, so don't bother with fancy clippers.
>>
>>54458326
Your paintjob looks competent to me, if a little basic (what I can infer from your terrible photo, anyways) - if you like the pink go ahead and roll with it, maybe try to find another element or two on the mini to add the same pink to as well to balance it out a bit
>>
>>54449927

>>
>>54458263
Best to play it safe like the post above says. Clip from further away and work your way closer.

I use two pairs of clippers, one for plastic and the other for metal. The plastic ones won't dull.
>>
>>54458266

Has age of guilliman gone too far?

Seriously though I've had this ogryn conversion plan in my head for years. The AoS minotaur kit juuuust barely has enough bits for the low-ready pose holding the Ripper Gun (and I just love that they're huge enough to wield them like normal rifles).

This is a very early soft-assembly. I still haven't done any of the greenstuff work, such as properly sculpting up the hands, the conan-style battle harness (represented here by strips of painters' tape) or his EMPEROR DAMNED PANTS.

Anyway, thoughts?

Instead of replacing the whole thing you replace the blade after a day or two when it starts to get dull. Blades come in tons of shapes (i prefer #11) and cost like $10 for 100 pieces.

Thanks, to make the ice i have only kept the rim of the model, glued a white cardboard circle underneath. Then, fill it partly with clear epoxy resin, let it dry, then complete with clear crackled paint (from green stuff world, but you can use any brand i guess) on top.
For the color i used ultra diluted temple Guard blue with a tiny bit of Kantor, apply it as a wash. And a dribrush of ceramic white.

As for the thicc paint, thank you for the comment, i'm completely new to the hobby (only painted 12 skaven so far) and working to improve. I have yet to find a good consistency of paint...

No real recommendations to make really.
There are no "brands" of note for the hobby side of things, they'll all do well enough.
This is a nice deal for the price, 100 #11 blades and a handle for $8.

>bought a pack of #11 for my handle
>handle only fits #2 blades and the #11 is too small and will wobble a little until it reaches the edge of the handle when cutting

I don't know if I should buy the skinny handle to fit these blades or say fuck it and buy a pack of proper sized blades.

Trying to get a new army together after a number of years, hopefully in time for Konor.

Gonna grab brushes soon, my newest is 5 years old, and I'm just learning to get started on edge highlighting, which I've only done a bit on the tac sarge.

Have his base be made out of Honeycomb

Told myself I'd finish painting a unit before buying any new stuff to avoid a backlog. Now bored of painting genestealers and those rubrics are tempting me.

Sure the TS are cool, but you may want to stick with what you have. That's what i'm doing, finishing my Spire of Dawn skaven army, then i'll buy those sweet stormfiends.

Death guard primer looks amazing with an earthshade wash over it. I think it would look better than sepia.

Looks good, though lightly extend the mud up further. Some mud fling is able to get a lot of distance.

Just don't go too crazy, the way you have it right now looks too "neat." Mud isn't always so even, some places get more dirty than others.

thanks for the inspiration, i think ill sponge on some mud colour instead of trying to apply more texture paint

YES, do it. It's a cool idea. Will you have beastmen guardsmen as well?

i dont think that blue wash or the oxidization or whatever it is works with the silver. you'd be better off with a dark wash or a rust, i think.

Mmm I see that, I'm actually considering swapping the silver for bronze or brass but keep the bluish oxid, for the more spartan aesthetic.

Bronze and blue oxid works well. But i'm curious to see some brass weathering on those dudes.

sounds like a terrible idea, never use organic materials for modeling
>>
>>54456760
To be fair, if you seal it in properly, it shouldn't decay too easily, but like >>54461433 said, you're still working with organic materials, that may cause problems down the line if it's not sealed properly.

Hey lads, new to the hobby and am probably going to buy and paint the Tau Start Collecting! box.
I am looking for brushes on the principle of "buy once cry once", so I'm thinking of just getting sable brushes.
So far I'm thinking a #1,2, and 3 should be fine, but some kits include more (i.e. Da Vinci 5359 has #0,1,2,3,4, and 6 for less than Winsor & Newton does for just a #0,1,2, and 3).
Would a combination of brushes like that solve most of my painting needs aside from dry brushing?
Any (you)'s greatly appreciated
