What other overpowered boons will be handed to Vox Machina?
>>
How do you watch Critical Role (and similar shows like RollPlay)?

Podcasts I understand since you can listen to them while commuting, but video is a whole different matter.

Do you sit and watch it for hours? Do you have it up on a second monitor while you do something else? Do you have it playing in the background and you occasionally switch back to it?
>>
>>54309797
>Do you sit and watch it for hours?
yeah
>Do you have it playing in the background and you occasionally switch back to it?
yes, usually i'll browse 4chan while it plays in a different tab. when something funny or tense is happening i'll watch it

CR falls into my work hours on Friday. I put it on the second screen and listen to it half-assedly while coding and fiddling with hardware. If I miss something and the cast bursts into laughing - I hit that sweet Alpha's 'Roll back 30 seconds' button and watch the missed part again.

>>54309797

>>
What's their current quest? Prime trammel? Is this so they can meet Ioun?
>>
>>54310577
My guess is the NPC they're going to meet that has the key to Ioun's plane is the guest player for tonight.
>>
>>54310577
ioun is the brain behind the prime trammel i think, they're still in the meeting gods and figuring shit out phase
>>
>>54310577
The prime trammel is basically so they can trap Vecna if they end up taking too long, and he actually becomes a god.

Knowing the way the rest of the party beyond Travis and Sam treat timed challenges, they're gonna need it since they're gonna take forever.

What's the problem with the production today? The audio is all over the place.
>>

somehow a show making a channel hundreds of thousands of dollars a month that has been going on for 2 years cant hire audio engineers that aren't complete retards
>>
>>54310711
>hundreds thousands of dollars a month

nigger, are you serious? they're not payed NEARLY that much
>>
>>54310754
the show makes geek and sundry hundreds of thousands a month from twitch subs alone, considering they have like 35-40 thousand, and i'd guess 90% of those are for critical role
>>
>>54310768
Can't forget the Alpha thing
>>
>>54310233
>What do you guys think he'll play?
Reinhardt. He'll just play Reinhardt. Guaranteed.
>>
>>54310791
i'd be shocked if alpha brings in five thousand dollars a month in subs, that site is a fucking disaster
>>
>>54310768
I think the last I remember them showing their sub count, it was ~32k people. Assuming they get the bare minimum of 50% of sub money given to them (odds are they get more of the cut OR have a deal set up with Twitch for G&S owners) they get at least $80,000 a month (before taxes).

I would suspect that most of that money goes into the G&S owner's pockets or gets invested back into the stage/sets.

If memory serves, they've gone through two different sound & set design crew members (a total of 6-9 people).

There's not way this arc lasts as long as chroma conclave, matt has made it clear that vecna wont just sit back and wait for VM to come to him, he's the smartest villain they faced, and if they don't put things into action soon, they're gonna have to kill a god

>>

Assuming you "begin" the arc with them going to the other corrupted ziggurat and meeting Delilah, we're on episode 5 or 6 of this arc so far. I'd imagine they talk to Ioun in this episode, probably go talk to Kord for Grog in the next one along with final preparation of the fight, and the next episode is the final fight with Vecna, and a "epilogue" episode where chat gets to ask the cast + crew 'behind the scenes' stuff and a battle royale with everyone at level 20.

On the one hand, Marisha tends to cry or get sad/emotional at almost every emotional scene.

>>
>>54311666
Well, looks like you got your wish.

I think one part of Vecna's plan just got revealed: he doesn't know the spell/ritual to make him a god, but Ioun does, and the person who knows Ioun's location is Sprigg, the guest NPC. So Vecna's about to drop a lieutenant on their location to kidnap the little Gnome and whisk him back to Vecna's lair for some good, old-fashioned mind rape torture.
>>
>>54311710
>taking a break
>be back soon

you are an absolute retard and nothing you say matters. good riddance and never return
>>
>>54311719
It's Vecna. He did a similar thing when the group first met him a few episodes back, talking in their heads all at once telepathically.

I think the only time Vecna actually spoke was the Counterspell from Scanlan to counter Vecna's Counterspell on Keyleth's Plane Shift.

Vecna said, "... What?"
>>
>>54311719
vecna just used scry on grog and now he knows where sprigg, presumably the key to ioun, is
>>
Ok, I popped in just as they entered spriggs house, what did I miss?
>>
>>54311750
My guess he just scryed on the group as a whole, and Matt's going to handwave it by saying that Vecna's Scrying spell is older/better than the current version (which, admittedly, is probably true).
>>
>$200 tickets for a dnd session that will probably be streamed for free

why
>>
>>54311762
well i think i saw grog role a die for some reason, matt probably texted him to roll a saving throw for scry, and considering vecna is smart, he probably realized that grog had the highest chance to fail that saving throw
>>
>>54311773
Autistic SJWs who want to see the cuck squad in person.
>>
>>54311761
Prior to them getting to Sprigg's house?

> They plane shifted to Terra, the Earth Ashari's location, being the nearest location to the area of Sprigg's house, and spent the night there after talking w/ the Ashari there and warning them about Vecna.
> Vex gave the boots back to Vax while the two pondered the imminent mortality issue of Vax being on borrowed time as a Revenant.
> Next day, they Wind Walk'ed to the area where Sprigg's house is, and succeeded on some DC checks to find it and not get pummeled by traps set up outside the place.
>>
>>54311788
Good to know, thanks.
>>
>>54311779
That's possible too.

If so, it's possible that Vecna "saw" the curse on Grog where he has a -2 to all his saves because of the Deck of Many Things, and went like, "ooh, this'll be easy, let these bumbling idiots to all the leg work for me."
>>
>>54311749
nah, he mocked them each time he casted power word kill and disintegrate
>>
can you even defend against scrying from an epic level wizard? even if they had planned against it, what could they have done?
>>
>>54311810
Encase all your hidden mcguffins in rooms of lead.
>>
>>54311806
i hope matt is playing vecna like this, because VM have never really faced a smart villain of this magnitude before
raishan was smart, but there was only so much she could do, and i don't think she had huge ambitions
>>
so far he's the best guest, and he seems like a swell guy

>this signal boost has no feminism bullshit

thank god
>>
>>54311810
Honestly there's not a whole lot they could have done. The casters of the group (Pike and Keyleth) might know the spell Nondetection, which is meant to prevent Scrying stuff, but that might not work against Vecna's level of magic power.
>>
>>54311810

i mean Scrying per the 5e phb is supposed to give a save, but it's probably some plot scry spell.
>>
>>54311840

Based Darin.
>>
>>54310926
Darrin DePaul said in character that speaking with Sun Trees is foolish; I laughed so hard when I saw her mouth gape open
>>
>>54311831
My guess is Raishan was meant to be played as a wily backstabber whose main goal was to cure the soul curse inflicted upon her body, and was willing to do whatever it took to find said cure.

Vecna's goal is to become a god, and he's been very patient for a very long time. But now that he's on the move and "in public" about it, this is when he's at his most vulnerable. But it's an epic level Lich Wizard, so vulnerability is relative.
>>
>>54311856

Guy who is a fan of the show and has watched every episode playing a "champion" of Ioun, Goddess of Knowledge.

I love how that played out.
>>
IF he is future scanlan, how would you react?
>>
>>54311846
i'm gonna go out on a limb but i think it's probably impossible for grog to save against vecna's dc 24 scry even rolling a 20, and i'm sure vecna knew that
>>
>>54311846
I saw Travis roll for something but he wasn't asked to by Matt. He reacted negatively. Couldn't Grog be the target of a Scry, he couldn't resist it with a spell dc 23.
>>
>>54311899
Matt has house ruled that nat 20's are auto-saves in most cases (usually on Saving Throws, not for skill checks), and nat 1's are auto-fails.
>>
>>54311914
that's how i do it
>>
>>54311914
that's started to change a bit recently though, especially against someone like vecna
>>
So is Vecna just scrying every hour to see where they are? I'm sure grog cant resist it, but the timing seems meta-y
>>
So when DePaul made the joke about the Sun Tree, did Marisha literally start tearing up because of that? How sensitive is she, geesh...

according to critrole stats
nat 20s:
>vax 89
>percy 88
>vex 81
>grog 70
>keyleth 40
>scanlan 40

so either they are all 3 cheating or none of them are, they wouldnt be that close otherwise. Looks like a normal distribution, except it's odd that grog has fewer when he attacks so much
>>
>>54312221
This doesn't factor in how many rolls the characters have made, the highest 20's belong to characters who roll the most.
>>
>>54312221
it's not surprising vax has the most, considering how often he rolls with the boots of haste and luck

The item's a carry-over from when they were in Pathfinder. Matt's gone on record saying that he wants to nerf the boots but doesn't want to do it mid-campaign.

He probably wants to make it more in line with the Boots of Speed in the 5th edition DMG, both in power and rarity. As-is it'd be a super rare or legendary item, being that it's 10 rounds of the Haste benefit without Concentration or the "wind down" penalty at the end of the 10 rounds.

>Grog out-of-combat play: Hilarious, unforgettable antics with his mates and fucking with NPCs

>Pike out-of-combat play: Heartfelt, believable and very entertaining motherly disposition toward her friends who she legitimately cares about and is often on point with the humor to boot

>Percy out-of-combat play: Currently baffled by the masses of knowledge around him and has a snarky wit that is plenty entertaining to listen to

>Scanlan out-of-combat play: Do I need to say anything?

Keylith out-of-combat play: "I'm crying" "I'm mad" "*Autistic screech*" "*Awkward shaky voice*" "*Derailment of fun for the purpose of sparking nonexistent conflict.*"

Yeah, the fact that the vast majority of Keyleth is acting. Marisha's fault is that she has so many fucking options as a Druid that she can't keep them all straight, she misinterprets things, but she also uses spells that are appropriate to her character.

Marisha irl has more of a Grog personality.

Alright, so I know a lot of you guys hate Marisha and her portrayal of Keyleth. A common complaint I see is that she is not acting in accordance to her stats. Such as her Wisdom score of 22 and Charisma Score of 10.

Out of curiosity, can you point out some moments when she did not act in accordance with her stats? What would you have done differently?

How about when, with 22 Wisdom, SUPERHUMAN in every way, like an oracle or revered prophet in a religious order type Wisdom, she decided to jump off a 1,000 foot cliff and believe that turning into a goldfish and hitting some water would negate all the fall damage.

Or when she continues to be a massive bumbling retard with an awkward, cringey "Shaky-voice" because "So uncharismatic" when, by definition, 10 is the Charisma score of an average person like you or I.

It's not about the stats. It's about the person.

Or if you're one of those people that refuses to believe Marisha and Keyleth are more or less the same, then it's a problem with the character. Neither of those things are going anywhere. We're stuck with what we've got.
>>
>>54314018
Considering this is her first character,, not really in fact I think outside of Matt and Taliesin they're all still playing their first characters of D&D.

It all snowballed from a one-off birthday game that they never expected to amount to anything at all.

How about not jumping off the cliff?

How about knowing how to take the multiple "what the fuck are you doing?" hints from the entire cast as she goes to leap off the 1000 foot cliff?

>Or when she continues to be a massive bumbling retard with an awkward, cringey "Shaky-voice" because "So uncharismatic" when, by definition, 10 is the Charisma score of an average person like you or I.

She originally had a negative mod but gained Charisma during the home game. So it could be a hold over from that as her character.

Or, as an average person like you and me, you too would be full of fucking doubt and fear, second guessing yourself and being unsure of your words.
>>
>>54314053
>she decided to jump off a 1,000 foot cliff and believe that turning into a goldfish and hitting some water would negate all the fall damage.

Let's clarify. She would have done so, if Matt didn't roll percentile to see if she hit the rocks instead of the water.

I can understand her thinking, smaller object, less chance to hit the rocks. Didn't work out in the end.
>>
>>54313941
I haven't watched every episode but I feel like her high wisdom she would be more understanding and open to the gods. She brings up that and how resurrection is unnatural a bit too often doesn't do anything interesting with it. Like for the first one she doesn't have a reason to dislike/weary of gods. Like I can understand if it was like be weary of their wrath or something but it's always just "I don't like gods." Then she's on her high horse about the dead should be dead but she seems super happy when the party decides to play God and bring their friends back from the dead

Matt was making up mechanics because SURFACE TENSION has no mechanics in D&D 5e. He also broke the rule of a maximum fall damage possible. So, he disregarded terminal velocity and made up something about surface tension.

Marisha could not have known what rules of reality Matt is operating on. She could have fucking dove into the water, which significantly negates surface tension. A creature such as a fish or dolphin could easily accomplish such a feat.

It's about that she thought that jumping off a 1000 foot cliff was a good idea to begin with. In what non-hugbox world do you think you'd survive without turning into something that has flying? What sort of sane DM would allow you to survive because of >muh water instead of rocks?

When has he said "bend the knee" fifteen times?

>Taelisin 110
>Marisha only 43 things
Huh I thought Marisha would have done work
>>
>>54314292
kevdak post fight iirc
>>
>>54314304
Marisha has done a whole lot of improv and stage work in LA.
>>
>>54314314

That was ages ago.
>>
>>54314324
I'm just saying when it was Travis' big moment to shine he struggled to improv, just like anyone else who gets put in that situation. It's really fucking hard despite Sam and Matt making it look easy
>>
>>54314333

Huh. I must be remembering it differently but I thought his improv was pretty good during the whole Kevdak mini-arc.

Honestly, the subtle things Travis does with Grog on the spot is incredible. It's not as wordy as Sam or Matt, with Travis and Grog it's more about body language but Travis does really fucking well with it. Grog is one the characters that feels most "alive" purely by virtue of the subtle actions Travis does to accentuate his roleplay.

Liam does that as well, remember when Scanlan died?
>>
>>54314170
You pop up exactly once in every CR thread with the same argument about Travis. While you may be right to some extent, your repetition of the same phrase is way more boring than the one you are talking about.
>>
>>54314427
I think Liam is solid though a bit edgey. I think he does well with being an edgey character who wants to protect his friends.

30 minutes at lunch. There's so much content I'll basically never run out.

I've been watching a Shadowrun one called Roll4It. The show is okay, but I've been trying to learn the system, so it's helpful to see it in action.
>>
watching the rebroadcast, the play between matt's imp and sprigg is so good
>>
so i'm confused, the show at comic is canon and can we watch it?
>>
>>54314602
There'll be no show at Comic Con, only a Q&A panel.
There'll be a game on GenCon though.
>>
>>54314621
when is gencon? will that be the next episode?
>>
>>54314630
August 17th, so no, not the next. No episode next week at all - they will all be at Comic Con.
GenCon live game will be in a separate venue with tickets for pre-order somewhere. It'll most probably be streamed though, like two live games last year.

Ok, as a foreword - at this point I've only watched episodes 1-15, the episode where Scanlan leaves and the episode where he returns.

Overall critical role is very enjoyable (Mercer could just narrate the whole adventure and 75% of the quality would remain) but they run into some serious tone problems at times with the roleplaying. Remember that time they killed a Duergar just because they wanted a hammer he didn't want to give them? Or every time they go full fedora vs Kima? I'm not even going to go into the whole Scanlan thing.

It's pretty obvious the cast made deliberate efforts to make flawed characters with various degrees of success. Failures include Tiberius, whose flaw is being flawless (he casts a spell to reflect being spat on, I legit don't know how Orion survived cancer with that attitude) and Kayleth whose flaws are rarely overtly noticed by the rest of the party. Where was I going with this?

Right so my question is, does /tg/ think it's worth it? There are DM's out there who would likely recommend against creating overly detailed backgrounds and personalities for the characters, not so much that they become wooden planks but so that there's NEVER any drama. In-character drama is first of, something everyone at the table must recognise can't be resolved immediately or even quickly, in a game that's predominantly about "I will solve my problems right now" kind of gameplay. Having a party of clashing personalities and "feelings" leads to situations that become overly verbose, defensive and embarassing, like Scanlans departure and return.

I'm not saying it's better to play the characters as a stat sheet because that's just boring. Maybe the best thing is to play characters that are superfiscial archetypes with less depth? It's just if you want actual depth you need to sit down and write a script and have a director come in to make sure dialogue is fluid, or else the characters make sense internally but the external interactions become nonsensical.

It's been mentioned in the past, but here are the D&D/tabletop experiences of the cast prior to the birthday game one-off evolving into a local game, and from THAT evolving into Critical Role.

>Matt
Been a lifelong nerd for decades, dating back to his high school years and learning a bit of 1st edition before moving into 2nd edition. Been stuck with the DM role for quite a while, but enjoys it.

>Taliesin
Also at least a decade of tabletop experience, dating back to oWoD and some 2nd edition D&D.

>Liam
Played a bit back when he was a kid, but hadn't rolled dice in almost 20 years prior to the birthday game (which was for him).

>Sam
Similar situation as Liam; played once or twice as a kid 20 years ago, never picked it up until the birthday game.

> Laura, Travis, Ashley
Hadn't played a single tabletop game until the birthday game.

Side note: Laura had worked a bit ahead of time with Liam on the whole twins concept, which is why she went into the birthday game with the Ranger and some form of backstory.

Travis didn't think to spend any time on the game and even showed up a bit late to the party, so he went into the game with, "what's the best class to hit shit with?" And Matt and Taliesin gave him the Barbarian.

Again, this was a one-shot. How was ANY of them to know/expect it to evolve into a home game, much less what it is today?
>>
>>54314333
Honestly, prior to the Briarwood Arc, I felt like most of them were still getting a feel for how to do it all on camera.

But when the Briarwood Arc began, the other experienced roleplayer at the table (Taliesin) stepped into the spotlight and - in my opinion - helped launch the show into what it is today with some strong roleplay, great acting, and helping his fellow players get into it as well as Percy danced on the knife's edge of getting vengeance or falling into the pit of hate, anger, and revenge that his literal inner demon wanted him to go into.

Matt's on record saying several times that actual Marisha is the opposite of Keyleth and is in fact manlier than he is
Still it doesn't make her acting not atrocious
>>
>>54315913
Keyleth is interesting because she is such a bad character she is like a joffery or a bolton. you like to hate them because they objectively suck ass however they make the grog and scanlan stuff so much better in contrast. However I think marisha not knowing the spells is stupid at this point shes been playing the game for over 100 episodes and her boyfriend is the DM if you dont know what something does dont use it, its not hard. Also she roll plays her stats like a tard.
