I absolutely despise the new Imperial Stormtroopers (tempestus scions as they are now called).

Seriously, I was on a roll painting my new IG models last year, until I finished the 5 bodies you see in this pic, and the overly detailed baroque nature of the new models sapped me of my will to paint. Now I am stuck in some painting purgatory where I want to keep painting but my poorly-medicated OCD is telling me I can't move on to anything else until I finish my 15 scions.

Finished the bases for these models and primed them. Noticed some annoying stuff I messed up while priming with the airbrush, to be fair, I only tried it once before.

>>54303964
If you want to paint over it, you will have to prime everything on the base. If you don't want to paint over it, after painting. Putting the miniature on before that, depends on whether or not it will get in your way, or messed up during the process. You should note where the miniature is going to be, or just pin it in place, when you place anything on there that might disturb its position later.

>Do people add grass and rocks and such to a base before or after they glue on a figure?

I've found it best, when making a "nice" base, to glue the cork/slate/sand/rocks/gravel down first, before priming the model. Then, after priming, those objects are ready to be painted just like the model is.

This wouldn't apply, however, when you're using Citadel's crackle paints, if you're being lazy and just flocking the base (pic related), or to a final touch of static grass/clumps. All of that would come after most or all of the painting is complete.

Reaper bones for super cheap.
Includes all kind of critters and monsters.
Reaper metal for higher quality stuff, that's gonna cost a little more.

Northstar/Frostgrave for cheap adventurers and gnolls.

Otherworld for great minis for adventurers and the most common beasts.

Mirliton has loads of the old Grenadier minis. If you are into old school 80s d&d with authentic minis.

Ral Partha also has a huge catalog that is probably gonne be rather useful.

Foundry/Warmonger miniatures is worth a look too depending on what you are looking for.

In all honesty if you are looking for something as mainstream as D&D sculpting and 3d printing custom stuff is totally overkill. But more power to you if you enjoy doing it.
>>
>>54304410
It's the good old FW recipe:

1. Airbrush with thinned leadbelcher/ ironbreaker (50/50 mix)
2. Airbrush from top of model with thinned runefang steel
3. Mix a little Tamiya clear green with Tamiya clear blue (25/75 mix) and airbrush over the model in 2 coats
4. Airbrush armour panels with Tamiya clear blue. Blending from middle of figure down, so the strongest blue colour is at the bottom of the pannels
5. Airbrush from the middle upwards with Tamiya clear green
6. Using an airbrush blend a highlight on the highest panels (head, shoulder pads, top of backpack) with runefang steel with a tiny amount of lothern blue, extremely thinned down.
7. Apply thinned coat of Tamiya clear blue over the highlight and blend into the surrounding area.
8. Using a blue glaze, drag down the whole model allowing it to settle in the deepest areas.

Though I've seen people do similar things with just a the metallic base coat and a bunch of glazes of guilliman/soulstone blue and waywatcher/waystone green.

the armor itself is pretty solid.
Looks a bit monochrome though.
I'd try and see if painting the grenades and the holster breathes a bit of life into it.

Also not what's up with the base.
Right now the conversion makes it look a little like he is wearing lifts. If you build up some texture on the base later it won't be as apparent, if you leave the base as it, it kind of bothers me, at least in that picture.

>Also is the name too edgy?
We're talking about 40k, so the only question is how serious are you taking yourself here?

I'm not really a fan of colorschemes that have every other piece of the armor a different color.
I think it would look better if you had the helmet and arms completely red instead of just the faceplate and the elbows for example.

There are official chapters that do it similarly like the Mortifactors, but they have a lot more contrast in their colors.
So if you want to keep the scheme as is, I'd either make the red or the grey a lot brighter so you've got more contrast there.
Otherwise try to operate with bigger colorblocks like I described before.

You can just by non gw greenstuff, get one where the two parts are seperated.

Salamanders aren't actually black, they are white guys with black skin
>>
>>54306029
Followed a tutorial video.
Mixed spackle and PVA glue with some cheap brown acrylic paint, adding sand for texture as I went.
It started out pretty light but darkened up after some drying. I then gave it an agrax shade since I was nervous it was going to be too light.
Finished them off with a layer of 'ardcoat once the mix had fully dried.
>>
>>54306068
Its just the black so far. Its like 10% done. the silver arm is just basecoated.
>>54306083
Its the perfect nigga face.
>>54306072
Its literally just basecoats.
Add a simple shade and highlight and it will look a lot better.
>>
>>54306104
Salamanders have charcoal black skin but not African features.

Here's another funny thing. It's the only head head in the box that 'Eavy Metal didn't paint for the studio's Deathwatch box set.

Well I figured that.
I'm just saying that the blacks aren't anything to write home about so you better make the rest of it count.
>>
>>54306128
>>54306205
yeah that is the new version.
In codex armageddon they had a white guy in a tac squad and a black captain with blonde hair.
Then they were generally considered to be black for a while before GW said, not they are REALLY black. Which looks like shit usually. Just doesn't work well in miniatures or anywhere else, cause it's not something that really computes.
>in b4 people say they were always meant to be jet black

Even red skin for demons makes more sense since most people are familiar with that concept.

But whatever.

That commisar on the right isn't metal!
>>
>>54304503
How I'd try.
1. Remove the head and helmet, and replace with the Primaris Helmet. Try sculpting the eyes with a hobby knife to get the right expression.
2. (this is the hardest bit, probebly) Cut a wedge out of the inner elbow. Now make incisions behind the elbow guard. Over a low flame, bend the arm until the angle is right.
3. Modify how the right arm sits at the shoulder joint, this should be fairly simple, just cut off the guide tab, and position to get the position. You may need to turn it so that the arm reaches right across the body suitably.
4. Replace the hand with an ammo clip hand of some kind.
Add greenstuff, and tweak until the model is suitably Johnny.
If you do this, please please PLEASE post it.

Currently working on a Nurgle Warrior. Yes I'm painting the regiment one guy at a time as I want them to be distinct from eachother in a motley fashion as they are to represent a collection of champions and heroes with a varied background and from different circumstances.

I've gotten quite far with this chap, nearing the finishing line, and I got to say that I'm surprisingly pleased with him. I especially like the way the mantle turned out. What I recon that I have left to do is an additional wash of the armour and the chest-skull with some Seraphim Sepia, an edge highlight on the sword, some neat work (in particular the green splotch on the plume's binding) and making the actual base, which will be done after Holy Duncan's Toxic Base-tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=na26t36C7X4

What do you think about him thus far?

As long as you thin your paint, use multiple thin coats, and keep your brush clean you can't really do Nurgle wrong. Make sure to pick up some inks and washes so you can shade quickly and make their mutations look wet.

Posted this before but I'm honestly lost on what to do with them.
This is just a base coat, decals, gloss varnish and oil wash. i can clean up the metals that rubbed off but I'm not sure what to do with the base coat because the shading is so FUCKING messy even after cleaning with a cotton tip. The base coat was done with an airbrush so if i clean up with a brush i'll have to repaint the entire thing since it goes down as a different shade and i also don't really want to ruin the decals.
after this was supposed to be just some pigment, grime streaky shit from AK to lightly weather it before some line highlighting although I'm not sure how good of a plan that is because I've never painted a tank before.
Stripped them at various stages of completion something like 6 times due to not being happy with them but now i just want to buck up and complete them as well as i can.
Could anyone give me some guidance?

You can't just default to contextually inaccurate dictionary definitions you autist. That's like calling the gaming side of 40k the hobby side because games are a hobby, despite the fact that there is a clear distinction between hobbying and gaming in the context of 40k. Just like there's a clear distinction between "layering" and "a layer of drybrushed paint". Drybrushing is not layering, regardless of the fact that you do apply a certain layer of paint with the method. Fuck you for making me type this too because you already fucking knew this, and won't even have a rebuttal to it anyway because it's fucking common sense.
>>
>>54312965

>>
>>54313480
Mate I wasn't talking about the technique I was talking about the paints used. If my language was wrong then I'm sorry but the context was entirely about the use of Ryza Rust or not. Layered paint vs layers of paint is not a mind boggling mistake to make.

Incidentally I reverse image searched the image.
>I used my airbrush to zenithal highlight to the step you can see on the model on the right. I then sponged and stippled the rust in four layers and washed most of the model is Gryphonne Sepia (I need to get some more pots of this before the paint colour change!).
>>
>>54305991

>>
>>54305056
If you grab an airbrush, I've found out that the best way to deal with bones is to load Agrax Earthshade directly into your airbrush and just go over all your bones models. It gets a super-consistent perfect first coat, that stops the whole "hydrophobic surface" nonsense that bones models tend to do.
>>
>>54313383
To get the GW effect, you use both Typhus Corrosion and Ryza Rust.

Typhus Corrosion isn't just brown dry paint. It has a texture that lends itself to being drybrushed on and works good as rust. And people saying Ryza Rust is just orange dry paint are somewhat missing the point. It's *easier* to drybrush with these types of paints, which is key when you want very specific paintjob versus just willy nilly drybrushing and having to control the moisture on your brush etc. But the most important factor is that Ryza Rust's color works perfectly, I've used other orange paints like Trollslayer Orange and Ryza is just easier to use and makes a better looking rust. The difference is subtle but it's there.

So I use Ryza Rust for the specific color and for the fact that it provides a minuscule amount of additional convenience.

The picture predates Ryza Rust so the insistence that it is Ryza Rust in the picture is silly especially if you are talking about a "very specific paintjob". And like people have been keen to correct in my language, it doesn't look drybrushed, it looks stippled and sponged. How you do it isn't massively relevant but okay thanks? As has been said a few times, there are a ton of similar colours out there from various companies that work just as well.

>>54313978
Apparently. I had an ex WD painter as a teacher early on so that helped a lot. I'm getting back into painting now after not doing it for many years though.

Im tempted to go with a black bolter since it looks pretty great there but as you say red is more traditional so im really torn. Maybe a few red combat stripes? Or a dark deep red perhaps.

>>54313991

Seconding a red bolter, but use a dark, muted, almost brownish red.

Like, Mournfang brown base, agrax earthshade shade, khorne red highlight, with only some points or the tips of the edges highlighted with mephiston red.

First reduce the image size. Could use some edge highlights on the orange bits of the chitten and some more noticeable shading on the bone. Base is flat, like just paint on plastic, maybe use some texture pain to fix that. Personally prefer simple bases so that the contrast between base and table isn't as weird

Don't bother with that oil pin wash bullshit. It's only viable if you're a veteran painter and have access to an airbrush for quick varnishing.

Instead, better options are getting VERY high sheen gloss, like Future Floor Polish, and then using ACRYLIC washes, especially ones like GW's Nuln Oil Gloss. You won't even need the cotton bud step for that.

Another method is simply doing true pin washes and not slopping that shit on there, but instead, using a very sharp brush, put wash only in the cracks. This step takes a gorillion hours, so what I usually do is slop the wash on there, and go back and paint with the previous color to clean up the wash.

No, hues not shades.
It's going to be quite different depending on the effect you want to achieve but let's take a look at pic related as an example since a detailed tutorial exists.

If you look the base colour used is actually a slightly greenish deck tan, the shadows are all reddish browns and the mid tones are quite peach colored, only the brightest spots are actually pink.
It is this depth of colour that adds realism. Though since you aren't painting cute girls you probably want to try something with stronger greenish hues, less saturated mid tones and shades.

Anyway if you want to read in more detail https://web.archive.org/web/20150216030421/http://gallery.kingdomdeath.com:80/Architect-Advanced-Painting-Guide

No one will complain about a chapter having "too good" or "too ancient" gear. I don't believe people that autistic a) exist, b) have the balls to call you on it in real life, and c) also happen to play marines and have knowledge of every second founding chapter

>>
>>54315374
I mean. What kind of basing do you think works best with your units, its kind of a subjective opinion. as far as stripping, if you dont want to disassemble it, soak that fucker in it over night and then run it under hot water and scrub the paint off with a plain toothbrush.
>>
>>54314812
>>54315374

Putting the model on first is a pain because you will always accidentally get some on the feet, and the legs block your brush when you are doing drybrushing and other basing decorations.

What I do is put a small piece of poster putty or other sticky tack and mask off the model's foot prints. Make sure the masked footprint is slightly smaller or equal to the model's actual footprint. Then when the base is done, peel off the masking putty, and glue the model to the clean footprints. If you did it right, the blank hole will be completely hidden by the feet and the model won't sink into the basing material if you piled it up high.

Yeah doing it over night is fine, try not to leave it in for too long. if you are careful you can avoid getting it on their feet. but if you want their feet to be a little muddy thats fine too, A guardsmen walking through a muddy battle field would have muddy boots or a Space marine would sink into the mud as he walked into it, so as long as you aren't sacrificing detail on the model to do it, its fine to have a little on their feet.

Symbols or colour on the knees especially to break up the wall of blue perhaps?

Unfortunately there's no guide in this universe to green stuff axes so I'm gonna bear my creation.
Also it's supposed to be a blunt weapon reminding of axe, since it's made of flesh.
>>
>>54310037
you can go with white (having "three colours scheme" meme).
You can go with black, but you would have to make it in a different shade/feel than armour, to avoid monotony. Probably black/dark blue mix with dark blue highlights (instead of grey as in armour). You know, like marvel comic artists highlight their blacks.
Yellow would look garish with that much red.
>>
>>54316015
Even so, It seems too light and single-directioned to be a blunt weapon, but lacks a blade. Personally, I would try to make the weapon head even and symmetrical so it looks like a clubbing weapon, as it just looks wrong and an injustice to the rest of your beautiful work.
On another note, how's the pack coming along?
>>
>>54316045
I wanted to use possesed wings for the backpack at first but those are sold out. So I'll get either the jump pack lord to get that old raptor aesthetic or just buy jump pack bits and try sculpting those.
I'm not good with weapon terminology, do you mean something like pic related?
>>
>>54312965
what's your problem? They look good enough.
If you think that panel/pin washes are too messy (is it even possible with a tank?), if those are oil paints, you should be able to remove/correct them after painting them over with odourless thinner or white spirit. Use a brush and capillary action.
The _only_ problem I'd have with this shading is maybe you used too dark colour compared to the very light base. Either *gray* (not black) or maybe burnt siena wash would be less... stark.
Also, you can use airbrush and overspray lower hull/undersides and lower sides of turrets with light dust or even transparent dark colour (like Tamiya smoke, which is GOAT) to post-shade and uniformize paint and panel shading at the same time. Just b-be gentle.
>>
>>54316101
No, what I mean is that the weapon head is asymmetrical. This naturally, gives it a natural 'direction' (you don't see people swing an axe to hit a person with the flat side of the blade), this means that when people see it, they do not think club or mace, which are 'directionless' (can hit with any side, like a baseball bat) but they think axe or polearm, as its shape, proportions and aforementioned direction match with this.
So they recognise it as a cutting weapon of some kind. Now they observe closer, they see that it lacks a cutting edge, which is a key feature for 'directional' weapons (as otherwise there is no need for direction and it just causes problems, like trying to use an executioners axe as a bo stave). This is why it doesn't work as a weapon, as it puts effort into having direction (allowing for far more deadliness and precision)
What I would suggest is something like above, where you keep the style of the head(as it is actually a pretty good idea aesthetic wise, but then get a piece of card or something and model it over the head, forming a blade that conforms to the natural curve of the head, doesn't detract from it, and makes it a functional weapon.
>>
>>54316204

>in terms of being as good as/better than GW's sculpts?
considering GW still sells the GorkaMorka buggy... all of them?
>Pic largely unrelated.

Kromlech has good quality. I like quality of the monsters from creature caster too.

Finished. Kept the sword removable for "The Relic" games.

Maybe it's just not translating well to image given that lighting, but aren't deathwatch supposed to be like a bone/cream color rather than stark white?

Also Primaris marines are just what all actual marines should look like, GW just brought in this Mk X garbage so they didn't have to delete their old ranges and upset fanbois.

Really wanna see a beakee helmet on a Primaris marine because when the modular kits come out thats what im planning on.

>Your miniatures look good, but you already know that

They look fine enough to me but I wasn't certain that WIP would agree with me on that. I've posted minis before that I thought looked good which were completely torn to shreds by the community. Nice to know that I'm not a complete fuckup though.

>where did you get those sweet Knight Helmets?

They're from the Putrid Blightkings-box. Great value there for any fan of nurgle.

Here's the rest of the unit that I've built thus far, still need a couple more guys so if anyone have any ideas/suggestions for converting them let me know!

Is that head from AoW's Wasteland Warriors of Pestilence with great weapons-box?
>>
>>54318258
No it's the decapitated eldar head from the Ork Boyz box circa 1998.

Very Cool, Nurgle shit is always pretty simple and it looks easy to do, but when done with the right style it looks really dope.

its a shrunken head from the chaos demons plague drones of nurgle kit

huh. there you go. i picked it out of my bitz box, and while i do own ork boyz, i thought the only kit with heads was my chaos demons. thanks for the correction.

That's ok buddy, It's possible they reused the sculpt I am not familiar with the Chaos range particularly.

A pair of hands holding it up might have looked interesting.

Or a sword that's embedded in a cracked stone and removing it would trip the light to shine from the hole.

Anyone know of decent skin painting tutorials? Checked the OP but couldn't locate any

Listen... strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the *masses*, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
