I've considered a lot of stuff for Mono-B. Toshiro looks pretty fun but I want to try this out first. I'm a mill player; I love alt-wins. Toshiro will be my next in line if this doesn't work out. :)

>never played mtg before
>hear about commander and it sounds like a lot of fun
>get a pile of cards off of someone and the only legendaries are stangg, ambassador laquatus, nemata of the grove and ihsans shade

After doing some research it seems like some of the cards are good for edh like Rogues Passage, Swiftfoot boots, Buried ruin, Evolving Wilds and Blighted Woodland but it doesn't seem like I have much to go off here. I have a lot of ramp green cards though so that seems alright. What's some fun stuff to do with Nemata? Also are there any good starter decks etc to look out for?
>>
>>54235011
>Also are there any good starter decks etc to look out for?

Most of the precons are actually not bad so just look at them and choose one you like
>>
>>54234158
Yeah, I was considering Sygg since he's the most "Yeah, sure". Cheapo general, doesn't need much, doesn't give much, likely to survive a turn.

Drainu would eat up a lot of slots for the lich effect. I'm not 100% there, but the options are surprisingly limited.
>>
>>54235011
Nemata can be pretty awesome. Just shit out as many Saprolings as possible, which isn't a hard task, then pack a few Overrun-type effects for the kill. Simple token beatdown.
>>
>>54235097
I have Overrun and Ridgescale Tusker, maybe I can find some more cards like those off people. This format seems really slow so is it a good idea to have mostly medium cost cards for the value?

>>54235122
If you want to be competitive, sure. I've always found the game is more fun when you just play big shit heedless of the cost, personally. Be sure to run all sorts of land ramp though! In a deck like this, Rampant Growth, Nature's Lore, Cultivate, Kodama's Reach and Skyshroud Claim should be high priorities. As far as Overrun-type effects go, a few key ones I can think of besides Overrun itself include Craterhoof Behemoth, Pathbreaker Ibex, Overwhelming Stampede and even Triumph of the Hordes if you want to dabble in poison.
>>
>>54235011
i'd suggest buying a premade commander deck from wizards of the coast. they're good for beginners.

then after you've playtested a bit and see what you like, ask your friends and/or browse edhrec for ideas
>>
>>54235190
I have Rampant Growth and Journey of discovery although because I would only be using green mana with Nemata I don't really understand why I would use Rampant Growth over just another forest.

The only card I can think of off the top of my head is Eldrazi Displacer.
>>
Pretty newbie question but had it come up in my last game
>place +1/+1 on gyre sage
>next turn block a 1/1 infect with aforementioned creature
>my turn proliferate
>I say I tap for 2 mana from gyre
>friend argues that she taps for 0, since his neg counters cancel my positive counters

So do cards maintain different kinds of counters? Or do opposite effects override each other?
>>
>>54235468
Your friend was right.
>So do cards maintain different kinds of counters?
Yes.
>Or do opposite effects override each other?
Only example of such is +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters. And yes they do cancel each other out.
Also when you were proliferating you were supposed to select each perm or player that you were putting additional counter on. Gyre Sage had no counters and wasn't a valid target for the ability.

Alright, so one of my playgroup members bought the new Archenemey set and immediately came up with a terrible idea: each of us build a commander deck to play Archenemey. And the commander is any Planeswalker instead of a legendary creature. One more rule: there's a strict budget of $100.

Which walker do I choose and what deck do i build? Because I'm at a total loss.
>>
>>54236143
oh yeah, forgot about that.

>>54236103

that's because most people don't find them aesthetically pleasing. if you like them, that's cool. but Wizards found that they weren't well liked.
>>
>>54236195
>$100 budget
Build Kraken kiora and proliferate. Have your entire game plan be about fogging, ramping then shutting out krakens.

Alternatively, Apex Predator Garruk would be pretty fun. Just run a bunch of removal and smash face with budget demons.

I did! Got a promo The Scorpion God, went 2-1 and netted Solemnity and The Scarab God in my prize packs along with a lot of other shit. Bretty gud value all things considered, would've only been sweeter if my promo God was the Scarab or Locust instead.

Also, Djeru plus Gideon in Limited is as disgusting as you'd imagine. Shame he's only worth pennies.
>>
>>54239147
No. Simple fact of the matter is that it goes U>G=B>R=W for how janky each color encourages, which makes Boros the jank extreme. On the other hand, if you don't like it then don't play it, and fun and jank aren't mutually exclusive.

>>
>>54237945
White makes for some good villains.
>>
So I was hoping to make a saproling tribal deck. My original thought was using Thelon and his fungi because it seems already pretty well fleshed out.
But then I thought a bit and came up with the idea of Tana paired with Sidar to make a Naya deck. Sidar would help get Tana and the other saps through for damage, which could be cool, and white has good token synergies.
The thing is I don't like attacking a lot, I would prefer being able to either gain cumulative advantages and win that way or do some janky combo that might or might not win me the game.
I think that Jund would be a better color combination for my play preference, but I can't think of a general that would help out the strategy, can any of you?

So how is Breya to play? I've been on Ephara which was easy enough to build with cards I had on hand, but it just doesn't feel like there's enough "there" there: fairly anemic lines of play with cards that while synergistic with Ephara do little on their own.

I realized that by taking apart Ephara I can rebuild 8.5 Tails which while not objectively powerful was a blast to play and parts of it would slot into a possible combo-lite Breya build.

My other deck is Akroma, Angel of Fury.

The closer you are to achieving combo and/or stax perfection the more valueable they become, it's always +1 mana that gets past mana locks like contamination or blood moon (but you should run basics anyway when not on 5c). On more casual decks not that much but you still should run at least a few.

Dorks is mostly a Green thing, and Doran should be running at least a few, and you should be running Deathrite Shaman without a second thought.

See i feel like the dorks are not great because they die too easy thing is a bit of misconception or myth or whatever. If they get blown out by a wrath on turn 4 or 5 or whatever, you were already placed turns ahead of your opponent before then. A wrath is an equalizer at worst for you, it doesnt really outright set you back unless you went full retard and dropped your hand which could happen to anyone really wihout s ateau source of ca, and creature heavy green decks play stuff to compensate for that like creeping renaissance and such. The best dorks (1 drops) come down early enough that you get multiple turns of value out of them.

I think the biggest issue with them is that they are horrible mid to late game, and in commander for most people that is the majority of the game. Normal ramp isnt great either but its better than casting a summoning sick dork that wont do anything.

>>
>>54241409
They're about equal, but Rishkar's edges out because you get a free spell off it and Revelation doesn't advance your board state.

It primarily depends on whether your deck goes tall or wide
>>
>>54241409
It really depends what deck I'm playing. Mono G Omnath? Rishkar's Expertise. Rishkar himself? Ironically, Shamanic Revalation.
>>
>>54241409
i feel like rishkar's is easier to use and genereally better but if you have a huge token strategy the shamanic revelation is better
>>
>>54241409
Depends on the deck really. You have to reliably be able to have 3+ dudes out for Shamanic, and you have to reliably be able to produce 3+ power dudes for Rishkar's. Obviously if your commander is reasonably costed and isn't 1/2 power I'd say Rishkar's is a pretty safe bet. The free card is nice as well since you're not potentially spending your whole turn just drawing.
>>
Hello commander general, is Power Hungry a good contructed deck for someone who wants to start playing commander?
>>
>>54241603
So here's the thing. Prossh is currently one of the strongest commanders in the format, but Power Hungry is not very good. Prossh's power comes from an infinite loop with Food Chain and any ETB/LTB damage trigger or haste enabler, something Power Hungry doesn't have. The best precon out of the box would probably be Meren of Clan Nel Toth, Plunder the Graves.
>>
>>54241603
Assuming you're not looking specifically for the best bang for your buck or for the most powerful one, any of the precons are a good intro to the format, you should do some research and pick one whose flavor or mechanics fit your personal play style. As someone who plays Modern and Legacy, the draw for me towards EDH is that it's a lot more friendly to personalization than competitive formats, so in that vein you should just pick the one you like the best.

Looks fine, even above average, for a first time/casual playgroup. You've got enough instant speed interaction and you're not flooded with 6+ mana cards. I'd cut Fireball and Banefire for more artifact ramp personally since those effects aren't very good outside of dedicated big-mana decks like Rosheen or Wort.
>>
>>54241704
Seems a little unfocused and looks like you jammed every Mardu Goostuf card you could find.

I noticed a bit of an aristocrat theme and go-wide theme, but what are your primary creature generators? Mardu Ascendancy and Assemble the Legion? I think you'll need better than that for consistency.
>>
>>54241793
Rishkar's, then. 5 power on any of your creatures is good enough for that card
>>
>>54241798
True I wanted to have an aristocrat theme but I was counting on creatures like alesha, crypt champion, and other shit to return creatures to sac for effects. I was looking for other ways to go wide but thats where i ended up. What mardu deck isn't goodstuff tho? At least I dont have kaalia, tariel, and boros dudes shoved in.

OK, some metrics for new players.

You want 35 lands. Check.
You want at least 10 ramp effects at 3 mana or less with several at 2 mana or less. We're talking rocks, dorks, or ramp spells if you're in green for them, not rituals. You're a little short.
While some decks can be very different, you usually want an average CMC between 3 and 4. Check.
You want some decent spot options and some good wipes; versatile is better. You're a little light for being in Mardu but it's not bad.
Here's where you may be weak: you want an endgame. "Oops, I win" cards help, generally red decks will spend a slot on Insurrection, blue decks on Cyclonic rift, you get the idea. You want a better way to end the game than beating down 120 life to 0; this is less critical in newer metas where more people are likely attacking, and when you're hyper-resillent which with your suite of Gods is fairly plausable. But still, it's nice to be able to just mise into a secure position. You're Marduchessa, maybe consider Solitary Confinement? It combos with Monarch really well, and if you have other extra draws...

It's a really good start for someone who's a total newb to the format, and could probably play at your average casual table.
>>
What do I need to replace in the Breya precon to make it more powerful? I know Breya is a combo machine so I'll probably want things like paradox engine, but then what do I cut?

All three of the new gods are super powerful in their own ways, and they seem really fun. I'd rank them Locust > Scarab > Scorpion personally.
>that returns to your hand clause
Honestly the strongest part of these cards for commander. The easiest way to stop a deck that relies heavily on it's commander, assuming the card costs 5+ mana or something, is just to kill it enough times + attack their mana if possible, that they can't recast it. Doesn't work with these fuckers.
>>
>>54242423
Scarab God might be the new king of the dung heap that is Dimir commanders. I'm building him control and I'm pretty hype for getting him to the table

Scorpion God isn't terrible for a Rakdos commander but Hapatra is a more interesting choice for -1/-1 Counter Tribal. He's kind of legit.

Locust god is WEIRD. At first I thought he was just a 99 include in Arjun (who's fun, but not super strong) but the more I've brewed and theorycrafted the more I've come to appreciate the EPIC GOOFYNESS he represents and just how many cards he goes absolutely nuts with, so I've come around to the thought of stuffing Arjun in Locust God's 99 instead.

>>
>>54242937
No, a counterspell is the best answer short of Split second.
>>
>>54242915
Purph and daretti are pretty good for mono red. Krenko is fast too, but more fragile.
>>
>>54242937
If it is a cascading deck like Yidris or Maelstrom Wanderer then it's a dumb idea unless it's a modal counter like Cryptic Command or the commander one that costs 5.

Calling counterspells the best thing ever is ignorant though, you can't counter everything and you need the counter in hand and mana available before they play the spell.
>>
>>54243100
It was Krenko+Thornbite Staff, which was pretty simple, Kiki+Conscripts which was funny, Dualcaster+Twinflame which was interesting with its stack interaction, Mana Echoes+Goblin Warren which was interesting since I'd never seen Mana Echoes before, and then Lightning Crafter+Kiki which was one of the coolest I've ever seen.
>>
>>54242937
Counterspells are conditionally effective. The idea is that you trade the card and the available mana in order to cancel out what someone else plays, so there are two major downfalls: when something is already on the field, or countering the wrong thing.

They're very good, don't get me wrong, but what you're using them for is important. The traditional "noob trap" is countering things at face value on an arbitrary basis, because they only remove a single target spell. As an opponent plays something "scary" they react to it, whereas a seasoned player may let something manageable through, and save the counter for a combo piece. If you simply want to blow things up, there are usually more effective options after the cast, because it lets you evaluate the board in context. Now, if you want to stop a particular strategy, they're fantastic assuming you have quality draw, but they also take slots from other strategies. It's very difficult to make a unique deck when you include 10 counters, 10 pieces of ramp/rocks and 10 things for card draw, so sometimes you need to intentionally skip counters so that you can run something that synergizes better with your strategy.

For example, my Brago deck runs tons of counters, because I also have removal available and am generally a dick. My Lazav deck only runs one or two because it has a discard/wheel subtheme, and I'm more worried about threats that actually stick on the battlefield.

Spirit of the Labyrinth and Leonin Arbiter, Spirit of the Labyrinth even more so because Scroll Rack + Depala Shenanigans get under the draw clause, and I can actually drop hands if I use a wheel.
Not sure if I like taxes though since the deck does play a lot of noncreature spells on its turn.

>>54243743
>>54243747
Rule of Law effects are somewhat strange because this deck does not have the same big presence cards it will drop every turn like I see in reanimator, nor does it play on other players turns like our Rashmi player does.
On the plus side, hate bears are pretty good here for crewing, though the deck only plays 3 vehicles. If I can think of some good equipments to run for this sort of deck though, hate bears would be fantastic. I was personally thinking sunforger since it searches Shattering Pulse as a combo piece.

>>54243750
Yes
>>
>>54243916
Presumably because they don't get to keep the cards they drew when they pass the turn. Though I would assume their deck is full of grey ogres if they fail to eliminate Jin, especially after drawing one or two hands.
>>
>>54244044
But I mean... you still gave them cards. As opposed to not giving them cards. I don't get it. I feel like Jin Gitaxias had to be a misremembering or something.
>>
>>54243975
You could try finding space for Iroas. Attack and crew with impunity.
>>
>>54244061
>you still gave them cards
The same would be true of Nekusar so I don't see your point. Personally I tend to avoid giving my opponents things. Even if it hurts them in the process.
>>
>>54244061
>>54243897
This is terrible in Jin, are you retarded?

>I've got this card that definitely dies to removal.
>it's causing my opponents to have severe issues with cards: namely, they have 0 cards in hand
>What could I possibly do to fuck this up?
>Oh, I know, I could let my opponent turn any spell in their deck into a free draw 7. That way if they don't draw removal with the first draw of their turn, they can chain cards together until they do
>and then when they finally remove Jin, they now have half their deck in their hand.
>hahaha, I love not winning.
>>
>>54244104
But I could understand the logic in Nekusar because it makes them smack themselves for 7 at least. I would never play it because 7 cards is way too fucking much to give them and also the enchantment itself costs a million mana just for the right to give my opponents fresh hands every turn, but there's no flow line of logic I can see for Jin Gitaxias. Like maybe if you were trying to mill them or something with wheels the hard way...? I don't think that's really what people do with Gitaxias
>>
>>54244152
I dunno man. Who can understand the mind of a scrub?
>>
>>54244104
Nekusar with Infect. That full hand won't be doing much good with ten counters, as opposed to Jin with zero way to punish them for it. Or just toss down a Psychosis Crawler and win yourself.
>>
>>54244169
Somebody tweet sheldon and ask him.
>>
>>54244180
You know I never realized Nekusar dealt damage rather than making people lose life. Fuck that's cool.

You can kill planeswalkers with him.

>>54237347
There is also Doomsday and ways to remove your deck for Laboratory Maniac. It also uses Second Sun and all of those eggs to draw many cards after investing mana.

no, im going to persist etb creatures, play marit lage with warstorm surge and annointed procession for value.

I've got both in my angry omnath deck. They both perform excellently, I would recommend finding a slot for both.

The last game I played omnath I had 634 power on the board from a blasphemous act and vigor combo. Omnath is great

good
>>
>>54243897
Obviously you play this in Tasigur group hug. Then you slowly pick people off one by one by playing Cruel Entertainment, taking their turn, adding back Cruel Entertainment by forcing your opponent to let you put it back, and decking them out.
>>
>>54243842
Solemnity's got a reeeaal cheeky combo with Murderous Redcap and a sac outlet.

>>54243975
Make sure you throw Archetype of Endurance in there alongside some deathtouch equipment like Basilisk's Collar and Gorgon's Head so you can lock down the block step. Your opponents need indestructible/double strike to even have a hope of getting through your bears.
>>
>>54246193
I do play Jaya Ballard and Grim Lavamancer already, so deathtouch equipments could work.

at that point I could also include Skysovereign, Consul Flagship and Dwarven Vigilantes.
>>
>>54244730
Throw ring of three wishes into Atraxa, very nice addition.

Ring is a shitty card though, even with proliferate. The dumb wish counter gimmick isn't enough and hell, I'd rather run the Djinn of Wishes.

Anyone have a Trostani deck? I've been thinking of making one for my first EDH, is it much fun? I like going full force with huge monsters with a bunch of enchantments and artifacts, would that work?
>>
>>54247180
Trostani can work for that, but I recommend Karametra too. Easy ramp for huge creatures.
>>
>>54247199
Wouldn't Trostani be better overall thanks to the lifegain and possible copying of huge tokens for relatively little? I was thinking of using Phyrexian Processor, so Trostani seems better overall, but I'll be sure to keep Karametra in as well.
>>
>>54247115
You are also missing worldgorger. And saying doomsday is not a combo is wrong. You play doomsday and some effect that let's you draw a card together, then if you built your piles right you win the game.
>>
>>54247223
It depends how you want to build them I guess, Trostani gets more value out of huge tokens, Karametra gets Landfall triggers easily. You can easily get both and just put one of them in the 99 though.

Lads I need help
Ever since I started uni I've been neglecting my health; never going outside, eating less, and now I've stopped playing Magic cos I have to get a 30 minute bus ride. What can I do to stop being a pussy and start going to commander sessions again? I miss having 15 minute trigger resolutions with my General Tazri deck.
>>
>>54247344
Get people at uni who play to play with you, so you can do it between classes or something.
>>
>>54247386
Yeah I'll probably just have to make an effort to find other students who play
I never talk to anyone in my class; I study ComSci so everyone is a fucking autist
>>
>>54247424
That's perfect. Lots of autists play MtG, so you have a good chance of finding some players.
>>
>>54247435
Yeah but I don't want to talk to them broseph
>>
>>54247455
Now who's being autistic?
>>
>>54247470
Not me, because I don't like talking to autistic people. Everyone in my class is an xD gamer PC MASTER RACE redditfag, I hate it.
>>
>>54247279
That's like saying that Wheel of Fortune is a combo because it gives you a whole new hand
>>
>>54247608
If you stack your deck with something like Congregation at Dawn, yes.
>>
>>54247640
I was thinking something more like Insidious Dreams, but yeah. It's still not a combo, it's just synergy. Two cards that interact together doesn't necessarily translate as a combo, since you also need fries with your burger and drink.
>>
>>54247667
But with Doomsday you get those and a drink too. What's the definition of a combo? I'd say it's something that improves your board state through multiple synergies. A Doomsday pile that wins you the game does that.
>>
>>54247697
Not him, but a lot of people use Combo to refer primarily to infinities or very large interactions. None of which Doomsday is involved in even if it is the Ultimate Tutor.

In my opinion, Doomsday is a great card for combo decks, but isn't part of any combo because the combo parts are the necessary ones -- in a vacuum, what actually interacts to 'go off' -- not doomsday, unless you're doing something Crazy with Mirror of Fate, but the cards in your Doomsday Pile.
>>
>>54247697
But Doomsday doesn't even interact with anything. It just allows you to maximise your chances on winning, if you know what you're doing. It enables easy access to combos and has strong synergy with a lab man but isn't a combo itself.
I feel like that a combo is a interaction in between one or more cards that can be repeated multiple times, in a sense that the other card allows multiple activations, such as with Rings of Brighthearth/Power Artifact and Basalt Monolith or Kiki-Jiki and anything that allows him to be untapped on ETB or tapping, or a non-infinite one, because it requires mana for example, like the Module trio from Kaladesh. For non-permanent ones there's Reiterate and Turnabout for example

tl;dr, combo requires a repeatable interaction with several cards.
>>
Do you buy singles online? If so, where?

>>54247915
I use cardhoarder but I've only spent like 20 tix total for several edh decks. I'd look up prices if you were to buy money cards.

Thoughts on running Saskia hatebears?
I haven't built a single fair deck so far, and the two options I'm thinking of are either Saskia hatebears and value or kamigawa mono b spirits and discard.
Anyone got a Saskia or otherwise GWx(x) hate bear list they can share?
>>54247915
Magiccardmarket dot eu if in yurop.
>>
>>54247915
>>54247956
Oops. Somehow read that as relating to MTGO. For paper cards I use a local place and magiccardmarket. (europoor)
>>
>>54247344
You can try to bike instead of riding the bus, that's sunlight and exercise
>>
>>54248005
Problem is that red doesn't give that many bears. You've got Eidolon of the Great Revel, which isn't good when everyone has 40 life, and Magus of the Moon, which isn't good when you're in four colors and are gonna get shafted by it. It's theoretically possible, but I think you'll have much more success with Anafenza.
>>
>>54248134
Curious, but why Anafenza Hatebears over Teeg hatebears?
>>
>>54247915
yup, at TCGplayer. they are just the best place to buy cards bar none
>>
>>54248147
Two reasons. I play in a creature heavy meta, which means Anafenza's good and Teeg isn't, and 3 colors gives access to more things, including Athreos which makes each bear your opponents want to get rid of into a political game.
>>
>>54248134
Budget isn't an issue so manabase would be fine. There was a reason for 4c although I don't have access to my WiP list right now, probably vandalblast and the likes, as well as harsh mentor and blue hate.
>>
>>54247875
Doomsday is a combo just as much as storm is. Combo does not automatically mean "infinite combo" and if you can reach a high enough storm to make Tendrils of Agony deal enough damage to kill then people have been calling that a combo for well over a decade. Doomsday is a combo card.
>>
>>54248217
It doesn't matter how expensive your manabase is, when a Blood Moon/Magus comes down the more colors you run the worse off you'll be, unless you're running a specific strategy like Hermit Druid.
>>
>>54247875
"Wins the game" is a much more common definition for combo than assuming all combos are infinite. Niv Mizzet + Curiosity is a combo because it can usually instantly win the game. It is limited by the number of cards in your deck though and only deals damage for each card in your deck. That typically is good enough to win the game.

I'm already gonna run MLD and I am willing to accept a loss to contamination/blood moon/b2basics and so.
