You can always not take the zombie options, which is something I had to keep, as the spirit of the CYOA is a comfy one.

Besides the compression options which are really nice in Illustrator, the other reason I prefer PDFs to images is that they have crisper text that's easier to read, even at small font sizes, high zoom, and small file sizes.

I'd pick famine, though the kingdom building is in the abstract. As it stands. The numbers and traits don't mean anything to me.

Oasis is Famine only, so I'll choose that. The writing doesn't have much to do with Famine though, fishing centric. The Overgrown fortress sounds more appropriate, maybe use the hanging gardens or change the writing around? The other special holds seem to tie in better.

The kingdom is fertile, so I chose traits that bind together. Duty, Happiness, and Community are basics. Farming is the obvious one, with Hard work, Craft, and Cooking tying into it. Mercantile and banking are capstones. I wanted Happiness T2, but sacrificing another thing like banking or trademark food didn't seem worth it.

Army: Purely defensive army since I'm an economic power. Focus on turtling and trade protection. Mercs are guerillas and don't provide a straight defense. Wild Orcs would see my people as weak. The Celts have spears, which sound good against mounted raiders, though we also have walls, forests, and mountains. I'm not seeing my kingdom afraid of many external threats. Three Thorns of Triforge to man the walls and Two Wilds' Beast Masters to skirmish and patrol sound logical.

Seal: Gaia Staff. Geomancy+Biomancy are a mean combo, and it's famine exclusive. Unbound train is a runner up for economic value. Trading with a technological kingdom would be ideal.

I become the most cuddly thing in the universe, shot back to high school, with a guaranteed supplement of female friends to my existing friendbase.
Nobody can resist coming in for hugs and cuddles, especially in the cold. Sometimes it escalates into naked, deep cuddling, but usually it's just a warm cuddle-fest. Everyone who starts cuddling me finds that they need to cuddle more and more, and people even start cuddling eachother, though nobody can match my cuddles.
Me and the weeb squad (And my own friends, if they are up for it) sometimes nonstop cuddle for days on end. Eventually the need for contact grows so much the cuddle pit becomes a nude cuddle pit. I imagine at least 1 orgy comes of this, but that's not the point.

The Twins are a sound choice, but I've got more than info intake and PR.

My kingdom doesn't have the tech/knowledge/magic focus for Lasren.

Cethra is nice, but seems like a more girly Verea.

Lastly, my review:

I think perhaps you went too wide in terms of scope when you could've gone deeper. The horseman specific options are too strong I think, and that locks down choices.

Five companion picks of 12 choices is too many I think, and the characters are missing a few specialties. That, and the waifus aren't really queen material I think. Unless the queen-lyness comes from bloodlines, a queen choice should be born of technical abilities that would benefit her people with more personal traits as secondary benefits. To compare to something like Zodiac Brides, there a few proper governing queens, but they sorta work by genealogy.

Anyhow, critique aside, you've got a great CYOA, you've built pieces of a world that let people put things together, a damn good achievement.

I've set up shop near the heart of the world; a place of boundless energy and life. I seek mostly peace and prosperity on a worldly scale, and seek to preserve a happy balance of life and death. No force on the continent could match our Military might, with a wide variety of skilled troops able to cover a variety of fields. Long range, short range, in secret, or on the battlefield, enemies will surely suffer.

Not only that, but our kingdom is sure to be prosperous and peaceful, with great trade and mechanical engineering, and a strong, happy, dutiful community inside a beautiful kingdom.

My Companions are all well suited for their jobs, and all are quite talented in their own ways. I myself should be nigh unstoppable in battle, with strength rivaling Titans, skin as strong as armor, and body able to regenerate from any damage I do take in seconds. Illusion magic would be useful in numerous ways both in battle and out, whether its making multiple copies of myself, making the opposing army fight themselves, or just messing around with people for fun.

I won't be hostile to any peaceful kingdoms, only attacking those who attack or harm my kingdom. Even my waifu will reflect the toughness of the kingdom (at least on the outside, I won't let anyone she's a huge subby).

When it comes to my kingdom, we speak softly, and carry a fuckin dragon.

Along with the monks who reside in the tree, a small society of Oni reside in the tree, determined to defend it as well. While we started off as uncertain neighbors and allies, time has united us, and as a symbolic gesture, I was united with them in a more literal sense. They also entrusted me with their treasured armor, and taught me the secrets of the land, so that I may better defend it.
My cause has drawn others to my aid as well. A noble soul by the name of Sir Simon has volunteered himself as my diplomat. Originally he crusaded against me, but upon learning my cause, and what the dead do to further it, he immediately joined up to spread the word and win others over to my side.
A young(?) maiden present in these lands even before I arrived, known only as Owl Girl. Technically we are not formally aligned, but we both defend the tree in our own way. She's known to show up when a good time is being had.
I once new a man named Christoph ll. In exchange for some magical training, I gifted him a treasury of books. Now his son who grew up on that library has sworn himself to my service. I do feel guilty that his current mental state is likely a result of my actions, but I have not formally brought the matter up to him.
The grand-master of the monks that live in the great tree I protect, Damien has countless centuries of tradition built into defending these lands. It's as much an art to him as song or sculpture. Frankly, sometimes I feel he does more to defend this realm than I. I just give him more firepower and diplomatic presence. His loyalty is to the tree before me.
A free spirit who wandered to this place by the name of T'lak. Originally just another vagabond, she wandered to this tree since it was on her bucket list, then never left. In the scant few years she's been in the realm, her knowledge of its beasts and trails has matched even mine. In a few more, I will have to rightfully surrender my title as master of the realm.

The prototypical city of my kingdom. Starting from a humble hole, we slowly build toward the sky to create a mighty arcology that stretches from beneath the ground far into the sky.

The kingdom is mostly vast, dense forest, shrouded in eternal fog. Fresh nutrients and warmth rise from the churning molten rock below to continually sate nature's needs. In the middle of the forest rests The World Tree, the tree some say all plants are descended from. It is a common pilgrimage site and considered holy ground by many citizens.

Sprinkled throughout the forest are mega pillars that spear the sky. On top of every pillar lies a great lake, accompanied by a predictable lightning storm.

It is within the Gaia Pillars that my people make their home. Following the example of the protocity Oasis, they carve out the insides of each structure, eventually hollowing a massive supercity within and under each pillar. In tradition of Oasis, they divert nearby river water to underneath the Pillar City, forming an underground lake not unlike the protocity's. The forests outside the pillars are treated with near religious respect and citizens are prohibited from large scale development in them.

The bottom of the pillar receives most of its energy through geothermal processes; the top harnesses the near perpetual lightning storms hovering over their lake. These act as a renewable and consistent energy source to fuel my hungry and burgeoning society. Even mining is treated in a sustainable fashion with previously mined areas left fallow for the churning molten earth to eventually refill its shafts with new materials.

I have little interest in micromanaging my citizens, so each Pillar City is largely independent and similar to a city state. They are free to govern themselves how they best see fit under certain guidelines (respect the forest, pay military dues, etc). I trust that their many talents will enable them to survive and thrive without overbearing guidance.

Farming is done within the city using artificial lights to supply energy to plants. Yields are high with carefully controlled environments optimizing plant growth. The forests are typically a source of valuable luxury goods like silk.

If, by some rebellion or foreign plot, a pillar city goes renegade, a direct assault would be too costly - both from the attacker's perspective and the millions who call the city home. In such circumstances the Empire's Hands are tasked to assassinate key members of the resistance until order can be reestablished for acceptable costs. The Royal Guard teach their skills within the military, but their primary purpose is to inspire both troops and civilians. The Thorns are obvious - they're a nightmare to face in both a foggy forest and an urban environment.

Finally,Ophelia. I found her wandering the realm once some time ago. I sensed her potential, and took her in as my pupil. In short order, she has become my right hand and my shadow. As much my advisory as my pupil, and as much family as friend. Me and Hira both consider her our adopted daughter, something that causes Ophelia no small amount of joy and embarrassment.
She holds a yearly ceremony to reunite people with their deceased loved ones for a few minutes. It was entirely her idea, and it has greatly smoothed the citizenry's acceptance of death, in knowing they can still potentially see their loved ones again with certainty.
As things are, I fully intend for her to take over my role, should something befall me.

My realm and my purpose are one. I will defend this place of life to my last breath, and I expect that if I didn't, those that stand with me would never forgive me.

Bartholomew has no preconceived culture biases due to his spontaneous birth, so he is a valuable diplomat. Zanzabar is essentially perfect for bodyguard due to his vast knowledge, power, and loyalty. Damien knows what needs to be done and when, able to use multiple paths to achieve his goal - resourcefulness is needed for spymasters. Alain and Maire are a peculiar choice admittedly - Alain has already shown military insubordination to his previous leader, and his morality would almost certainly interfere with efficient military tactics. But I think they can boost morale during wartime and peace; citizens and troops can rest assured that they are being led by someone who values life, and know that their nation is in the right. Sir Simon is basically a propaganda tool. He reinforces needed cultural solidarity between distant city states through shared religion and views of righteousness.

I don't plan on conquering or anything, I just want a nice, peaceful land to watch over. I'll hopefully become fast friends with the other lords--I can lend my necromancy powers to help them with menial labour or kingdom defense should they need it. I'll rule side by side with my queen Verea and shower her with vacations and romantic dinners. I only need my Garrisons to back up my kingdom should one of the other lords decide to take my land. Really great work, Celt. Good writing, simple design, intriguing concept. Pretty good though you don't need separate waifu option. Hell, I'd say that Solstice or possibly Owl Girl make potentially awesome waifus on their own. If you ever plan to fiddle with this CYOA, I'd simply make sure that waifus have decent skills and lump them with other cahracters many of whom already seem like random folks, not anyone special for any of the 5 roles provided. Also, maybe more roles could be done too - personal steward/maid, war-master divided into strategist and the frontline general? Or if you don't want to divide warmaster, then maybe a role of second-in-command in general, a right hand man to help govern one's place, in a secretarial kind of way.

Also, more types of lands outside of one's city-kingdom. Not all of them have to have special effects but I lack regular land for fields, access to some sea rather than stormy lakey waters.

Generally, the CYOa has nice Magical Domain-styled theme but it'd benefit from some of its depth as well. Less implied and forced effects and consequences and more choices (especially noticeable in case of choosing one horseman mantle - it's not bad but rather than having citizens of particular mindset and traits, I'd rather have a pool of particualr traits including some expensive ones befitting particular theme with discount if your horseman power "matches")

A few more at least. There's a lot of potential. You go for cthulhu themes but so far majority of your choices seem to be the regular "choose a blessing" thing. Nothing eldritch, subtle, specialized or intended for people with ingenuity..

...especially since sanity costs should hit one hard, at least at lower levels. At higher, it should be at worst a nuisance, maybe even lighter than current 75% is and it should be complete game over at lower ones. Consider a level or so more to balance it out - maybe every 20%? At 100% you shouldn't be implied to be lost in hallucinations, you should outright stop being a human capable of higher reasoning - just a twitching heap of gibbering meat, in proper lovercraftian fashion.

Would you believe that I've made this post almost whole before considering your questions and then I noticed their order follows exactly my feedback? Now THAT's pretty spooky.

I feel you on the "choose a blessing" thing. Part of it is that I just wanted to get something written on the boxes, and part of it is a desire to get the simple stuff out of the way to allow for the more complex powers.

Basically, my thinking is, that it'd be best to have a foundation of basic powers on which the more complex ones are built.

Some of the options are, in a way, "free" but incur sanity bleed, Memory insurance and Final Form will both trigger under certain circumstances, and cause you to lose 5% san each time they're triggered.

I might throw in a few others that have purely physical drawbacks, or powers that are inherently double edged.

I'll almost certainly want to rework the sanity, but the thing is, I don't want low sanity to have actual physical reprecussions, purely mental ones, so maybe 0% being gibbering and completely insensate, and 20% being unable to discern between reality and visions?

Also, suggestion in regards to thos erows if you'll add any but lack ideas - remember that there may be fitting, thematic choices that aren't directly providing boons - often in lovercraftian and similar lore it wasn't outright blessing of sort that just made one crazy, it was a forbidden knowledge and perspective on reality that forced mind to twist in unfamiliar ways. Maybe innate knowledge of magic, some subjects of engineering, biology etc could be learned - offering no immediate benefits but a chance one acquire some other boons on their own, at the same time never being sure how much sanity it'll take. Or even boons costs in sanity aren't sure - think of ability to look into other's hearts - on one hand, it may be very useful but you also have to be careful because practically everyone have their darker thoughts and feelings and so, it's not the power itself that costs you, it's a risk of using it on a person depravity or horrible thoughts of you may have issues handling. Or maybe something similar - telepathy, but the deeper you try to get into somene's throughts the more lost and merged with them you are, risking losing parts of yourself if you'll regularly dig deep into minds of others without breaks for your own thoughts and personality to reassert itself.

It's a bit hard and may be tricky in translating into actual point/sanity costs (if you plan to keep/add such) but worth thinking about, I'd say.

Sure, kinda what I meant. That "heap of gibbering meat" was meant more like a colorful description than actual suggestion for one to turn into some shoggoth. That being said, I guess some of those modifications could lead to that. Maybe instead sanity and some-random-points there could be just another sliding scale of how much your body can handle? Would make a good duality - some options seem purely mental/paranormal and some suggest outright mutations so that could work well allowing 'players' to balance their choices and decide if they don't mind, for example, ending as relatively sane, but very sickly person with progressing, incurable cancer held in check only by their powerful regeneration Deadpool-style if they'll have high SAN but low BODY.

Of course, those are merely suggestions that may need refining. Brainstorming things, if you'd like. Feel free to disregard, I wouldn't want to hijack your vision for your CYOA.

Those are some really good ideas actually, and I'm almost certain to steal them, but as you quite rightly said, it's a struggle to actually translate them into an easily digestible mechanic.

I'm not really attached to sanity as a figure from a creative standpoint, but from a mechanical one, it does make things a little simpler.

Melding thematic powers/drawbacks and mechanical simplicity is a careful balancing act, and I do appreciate assistance with that, but I'll almost certainly do an imperfect job of it, try as I might.

How about rather than spending sanity directly, you get some amount of points to start, and then you can get more by getting insanity-related drawbacks of varying kinds and intensities?
If you have trouble coming up with a lot of different options for differing levels of intensity, you could just have a main one for each different kind of insanity and let people pick them more than once to intensify the effect.

To be honest, technically shoggoths may not have understood free will the way a human can, intellectually. They may have rebelled instinctually. A dog doesn't think about concept of free will either and can sometimes rebel against its master.

Don't take me wrong. I normally like my lewds and waifus too and I think they fit almost any CYOA pretty well but in this one I don't think it'd work well without some ugly, disappointing twist. There's mention of powers like pheromones so stuff may be implied but outright waifus would not mesh with things.
