pics arent the best and lighting isn't amazing, but I more so just want some feedback on the pose/conversion. the legs/torso and 1 arm is glued, the rest is blu tac'd. still need to do a bit more work on it, like buy some greenstuff, cast some more length of ammo feed, then prime, then glue it on to the model (fucken got too excited to get into the model)

Last time I'll post this, pinky swear.

I'm making a Knight Atrapos possessed by a Herald of Tzeentch. I've got a pretty good idea of what I'm gonna do for him, just looking for some last minute suggestions:

-lots of skin over the metal parts, changing colors from pink to blue
-maybe several places where it looks like some skin is growing out of other skin (like the old Horrors where they were crawling out of each others' mouths)
-have a few Blue Horrors crawling around on the outside of the Knight
-have a few more Blue Horrors look like they're emerging from the knight's skin

Seems like it's missing something though. Obviously gonna do plenty of Tzeentchy stuff to it (sigils etc) but I feel like the idea is lacking something.

I had a Knight I never built, a Slaughterbrute kit from eons ago which is now a Giant Chaos Spawn and the single head from the LoC sold on ebay for like $5

Some people have backlogs, and this cleared two of the bigger kits I had from it

And as much as my wallet hates me for saying this, no I'm not at all concerned about price.

>>54177444
not bad! nice trips
be careful on the blue paint that has made its way onto the gold parts. once you start shading/highlighting it will become a problem to clean it all.

Also, my wips.
I had no use for the primaris dark Imperium box so I'm fully converting the models to become a full Deatwatch Veterans squad, plus a Watchmaster(because primaris, and i also don't like the model).
Still heavy WIp, have to add a lot of Inquisition insgnias and greenstuff a lot of shit, including some gaps.

That "blue grey" look comes from the lighting aiming behind the thing and casting a shadow over the front. Most likely the tractor itself was painted in a slightly muted white/ very light grey paint.

However if you do want a blue-grey, you can follow the steps at the top of [pic related] and add rust, grime and weathering effects after you're done. The warmer browns should contrast nicely with the cooler and muted grey armour in the end.

Hey guys. Im new to this whole 40k thing and Ive decided to start playing the Imperial Guard. Can I use whatever colour scheme I want or will some autismos start schreeching at me? Also do I have to keep their gear uniform or can I build them to look like a bunch of space pirates?

You can follow the standard colours, like Cadian if you want it easy
But really, a large part of 40k is the 'your dudes' thing, if you want to do a certain colour scheme that's fine

Question /wip/

I play Blood Angels and have held off from painting my Primaries Marines cause I wanted to green stuff onto them blood gems and wing decorations so see on the normal tactical squads.

But then I remembered Gulliman also made these marines to restore dead chapters. Which gave me the idea to paint these guys as Lamenters. However would it make sense (or be cool to see) Lamenter Primaries Marines fighting alongside Blood Angels?

Put primer on a model today. Bad weather, lots of humidity. Wasn't careful, now it's all flakey/powdery. My fault. Never had this before, won't let it happen again.

Since I want to finish this thing by Sunday, how do I get this off best?

My idea was to let it sit in water with dish detergent over night and gently scrub the rest off tomorrow with an old toothbrush.
>>
>>54191789
yes
also, shoulders and heads are compatible with primaris, so just get a blood angels upgrade sprue
>>
does super glue not work on resin?
>>
>>54192147
Primer tends to be pretty stuck after a while, but I guess this is new. If the detergent wash doesn't get it I've managed to strip it off with an overnight dip in Super Clean and a stiff toothbrush the next day. Wear non-latex gloves. Super Clean will eat through latex and also your skin.

>>54192230
It does, but you can still snap it off later. Make sure you let it set. You might want to consider something strong like two-part epoxy, lock-tite, or pinning if you really need to lock shit down.
>>
>>54192230
Super glue works.
But depending on the resin, plastic glue probably won't.

I must be doing something wrong then. Any thoughts on what I could add to the rune priest and iron priest helmets to make them stand out more? Also, I want them to be imitate Odin with a missing eye, should I leave one lense black, slash each helmet over the eye, or just use space marine heads with a augmented eye. Lore wise for the chapter is that they have to carve out there eye to put in a augment in order to read the chapters holy runes that are unique to them.

Also a new name idea wouldn't be bad either. All around I just need help.

Posted in the /40k/ thread to no interest, so here goes:

Alright, so i've got two of the Intercessor squads and two of the Hellblaster squads arriving tomorrow in the mail. Later on next week there will be a Primaris Librarian arriving, too.

My plan is convert them slightly and have them as two counts-as Deathwatch Kill Teams with the Libby as leader. 10 Veterans each, 5 with Stalker Bolters and 5 with Plasma Guns.

The question I have is this: How the hell do I go about converting them? The shoulderpads are all part of the model (except for the Primaris Librarian, which is basically just like the older kits as far as I can tell), and there's hardly any room for swapping of heads etc as far as I can see. I haven't actually had a look at the sprue yet, so can't verify any of this though. Does anyone have any ideas, or experience converting Primaris thus far? If so, share your stories or advice!

The models were featured in WD when the plastics came out.
You know one of those showcase articles where they do a few conversions and stuff to show off what you can do with the kit.
Those are sculpted with green stuff.

Strictly speaking it doesn't really make sense for scouts to have these kind of rebreathers anyway since the little grill thing with the tubes on their chest is an rebreather. The old metal shotgun scouts had one variant where the guy is wearing one.
If you pay attention you'll also notice the same apparatus on Azrael, a SM Chapter Master who doesn't wear his helmet, but has it carried around by a watcher.

Anyway, if you want to be 100% hardcore about it you should try to replicate the look of the scouts wearing their own rebreathers, imo.

If not the IG command squad has separate rebreather bits, as does victoria miniatures. You could also just get a headswap, there is no shortage of 3rd party head bits with gasmasks.
>>
>>54199562
yeah. I've already taken pictures of them on the sprue, so I know which style of arms will fit which style of hand.

I'll go ahead and separate them all out later.

Just getting into 40k and painting figs.

When I thin down GW base and layer paints, do I use water, or should I get some sort of medium to use?

Also what should my ratio generally be?
>>
>>54191789
>>54199890
Like any of that even matters anymore.
The Primaris guys are getting a hover tank. A fucking hover tank.
For about 20 years it has been a set in stone rule that the only anti-grav vehicle the Imperium has is the Landspeeder and a single jetbike in the possession of the Dark Angels' Ravenwing Master.

GW is even retconning the shit out of their own universe to introduce Primaris.
At this point it doesn't even matter anymore. I don't think even GW cares anymore.
>>
Upcoming black chads.
>>
>>54200340
water works fine.
Ratio is usually said to be about the consistency of milk. Some people seem to have an issue processing that.
So the best answer you'll get unless you have someone sitting next to you is gonna be 'until it feels right'.
If it's too thick you'll now. If it's too think you'll definitely know.
>>
>>54200381
Thanks, a follow up question. I would assume it's better to be to thin than to thick, if I am unsure?

I have a basisilk and I want to add metal crewman to the loading platform, but I have a problem.
I don't know if I should remove the tab and glue/pin the models to the basisilk platform, or just place them on the vehicle with its base.
the guys are old metal cadians sculpts if it means anything for desicrating the tabs.
>>
>>54200404
Depends on what you are doing.
As a rule of thumb thin paint is good if you want to glaze and feather or something like that. I.e. gradually build up a smooth transition.

It's gonna be hard to get an opaque layer of white over black that way for example. But you'll find that out yourself when painting. If you've gotten to know your paints a bit and are more comfortable with painting in general it's just gonna click and you'll know what to do.

That said, you can always add more paint or water to the mix on your pallette.
>>
hello /wip/, im trying to identify the earpiece or the head in this picture. Can you guy help me out?
>>
>>54200434
Using the bases is not a problem. The plastform is big enough for it.
The rules don't really do something like casualty removal for crewmates currently, so you could just as well put them on there permanently, if you prefer the look.

As for desecrating something... they're your miniatures. Do with them what you like.
The only reason to keep them intact in that way is if you are worried about resale value imo. If you decide to put them on a base later on again you can still pin them to the base. So for gaming purposes it doesn't matter all that much.
>>
>>54200505
if you google for
Ordo Malleus - Storm Trooper Warden Rence Thenes
Not even the guy who made it seems to know what is since it was apparently gifted.
That said I doubt it's a stock head since it's an Inq28 model and I think based on one of the FW renegade bodies.
You should be able to do something similar easily yourself if you take a bit of putty, put a ball on the side of the head, flatten it and then use the end of a closed ballpen, tubing or something else with the right diameter as stamp.

It's probably not going to help you work faster. The primary advantages of the CItadel Mould Line Remover are safety (it's thicker than an X-acto blade, and is not sharp) and its ability to work well on metal models as well as plastic. The unusual shape does help get into some weird places that might be tough with an X-acto as well, but those will be the exception rather than the rule.

Your paints, thin them.
The mold lines, remove them.
The awkwardly unpainted sections near the left hand and left foot, paint them (or just be lazy and use a wash).
Your picture, crop it.
>>
>>54201577
I said it in my original post, these models were first featured in WD. 10 years ago.
GW just dug the pics of models up because they look nice and put them into the SWA book.
Since it came out people ask about the damn masks every second thread.

I think the models came out late 2005 maybe, but I'm not sure. If you feel inclined you can just look for the WD that accompanied the release.

Sculpting a mask like that also just takes about two minutes if you know what you are doing and doesn't mean any collateral damage to other bits you have.

Remember that fag from a couple threads ago that had shoulder pouches and couldn't paint to save his life? Well he's back, and this time he followed Duncan's tutorial.

So first things first I cut out all the pieces I wanted to use and started de-moldlining them with an xacto-knife. It took me about an hour to do, but part of that had to do with constantly worrying about slicing open my hand. I think I'll go out and buy a hobby knife, because even when I retracted the knife to a "safe" size it was still too big and unwieldy.

Next I primed using Rustoleum's Gray Primer, which went on really thinly I think. I can't actually tell since it looks exactly the same as the figures. I think I'll keep using this paint, but I need to find some black.

Next I got started painting the figure. I shaded with Nuln Oil, highlighted with Enchanted Blue, and washed with Drakenhof Nightshade. I think the highlighter was too blue, so I'll find something more vibrant, and washing with Drakenhof just made things too dark to me, so I won't do that in the future.

The finial picture is just a WIP on the bolter, and the pouches, which I painted Cathian Brown, shaded with Agrax Earthshade, and highlighted with XV-88. I think that turned out extremely well and will do that in the future.

Pt. 2
I continued on following Duncan's tutorial, and I think I did everything well except for the gold. I think I really overdid it highlighting with the Runefang Silver.

Anyway to end I've got a front and back shot and all the paints I used surrounding the mini.

All in all I'm really pleased with how I did. I think what I need to work on specifically is better brush control when it comes to the highlighting, since that got a little too crazy in places. When I made this model I painted everything all the way and then assembled it. Next time I think I'll do base colors for everything separately, assemble just some of it, highlight and shade, and then assemble the rest. That'll work better I think.

Anyway so /wip/ where do you think I went wrong with this model? Where did I not thin enough? Just how shit are the highlights? Would you consider this acceptable (with some revisions) qualify? Give it to me straight, doc.

this is so much improvement it is actually crazy. you hit the nail on the head, you've got a lot of practicing to do with highlights (like most of us here) but in general your coats are looking thin and even. maybe experiment with one brighter highlight for the blue?
>>
>>54175540
Where does one get Johnny?
>>
>>54209312
took a significant turn for the better.

Painting everything separate, well it can make life easier but only if you actually mount them on something which can also pose its own set of problems. There's no real need to go to this extreme.

The highlights even look ok but you could do an even finer one with a lighter shade, not neccesarily all of them just the most prominent ones. It's not too bad if you already have a guide line there.
>>
>>54209312
also, edge highlighting technique.

easiest way with sharp edges is not to use the actual point but angle the brush at somewhere between 30 or even fully perpendicular and drag it so the side of the brush is catching the edge.
>>
>>54209407
Man it's crazy what some shading and highlighting will do, right?
Also, I'd keep messing with which blue to use, but I'm transitioning to Blood Angels so there's not much of a reason to go buy paints I won't use. Enchanted Blue works well enough when it's between that and more Macragge, but we'll see. Maybe I'll need it for a devastated squad or something.
>>54209573
I think you're right, there's no reason to at least put the torso and legs together. I like painting my parts since it allows me to be really detailed, but then again it's much easier to mess up with painty hands, and highlights are harder to visualize. I'll try a sub-assembly next time will see how it goes.
>>54209641
That's a good idea. I saw Duncan doing something similar but had trouble replicating it. I'll probably get better with practice though.
>>
>>54209260

Your best bet is eBay. I was going to link you to a UK seller that had one in his multi-listing, but it seems he either sold it (for about $30US, which was a bit rich for my pocketbook!), or decided to hold onto it since it is fairly difficult to find. That was last week or so... when I see them, I usually post a link here on /wip/ just in case somebody is interested.

I typically use this string to search:

(oop,"rouge trader","rogue trader",metal, vintage) ("space marines","space marine","blood angels","blood angel","space mariens","blood angles") -chaos -epic -atax -kenner -ccg -maelstrom -cryomek -grendel -void -vasa -dirtside

... and add a limiter for either the United Kingdom or the United States as the country.

This is such an improvement, bro! Keep practicing and you're gonna do just fine.

I gave you a somewhat snarky list of things before. Here's some new ones with less snark.

Citadel's only tool worth considering a purchase of is their scraper. It's fantastic for getting off moldlines without damaging the model (or yourself).

I think the lighting of your photo area is adding the illusion of thickness to some of your paint - the armor is looking real nice - your boltgun looks a bit off to me, I'm not sure what it is. It might just be that it needs another thin coat of silver to properly layer over primer so it can get a smoother finish, or maybe it was just the way the primer dried on it initially. Remember not to spray from too far away or the spray will dry on the way and you'll get a weird, rough texture on the model that you didn't want.

painting in pieces is a great way to make things easier for yourself and a hard thing for many people to make themselves do. Most people want to glue everything up immediately and screw themselves over. On the other hand, it's gonna slow you down a lot if you did this for every guy. On marines I highly recommend gluing down everything but the gun or the gun and arm attached to it if the model holds the weapon across the chest. everything else should be easy to reach with your brush. (although it can be nice to do stuff like grenades all at once by spraying them silver and washing them, but you get what I'm saying).

Another anon mentioned using the side of your brush if possible for your edge highlights. Best advice. Make sure your paint is thin enough that it applies smoothly as you take the brush across the edge, but not so thin that it runs or pools up.

All paints have a specific nature to them - highly encourage just experimenting with how they change when you mix more or less water on your pallet. Keep it up!

I was just going to paint the primaris the usual DA scheme but should I go for a successor chapter? How stupid would it look beside the usual DA green forces? I figured they're already special flakey enough

Never win anything ever, so hopes are deleted already.

That said, your voice and audio is good. Will look forward to hearing more. You should see about getting some graphical elements going perhaps... rather than a static image, try a slow zoom. IE: Start at 100% and zoom to a 70% or so by end of a video. Gives some movement for the eye.

So there I was on my couch separating Nurgle marines and pox walkers from spruce, and a wasp came in and landed on my bits.

The thought struck of painting them pale yellow and black/brown.

How the hell do I do this without it looking tacky?

I gently shoed it out the window.
I just thought wasp themed nurgle could be fun.

Giant wasp helldrake.
Wasp daemon princes.

Something like this? I was originally going to use this as the basis of my own plague marines.

Are you Bruce Wayne?

I'd say wasp Nids works a bit better but if you want to go with it just make sure you lay down the yellow first then go over with the black to keep the lines crisp

And as always when it comes to yellow, keep those paints thin and dont cake that shit on
>>
>>54211495
Yeah I spose so. Not sure exactly where to go with this..

>>54211504
Yes. Mostly. Kinda. No. My dad might be dead?

>>54211516
I know. But bug themed bugs is overdone.
And I've never liked nids.
Like I said, inspiration struck me. Gonna roll with it.
Just don't know how.

Taking a break from Imperial Fists to work on Geigor. I really need to get a better picture-taking setup.

> I retracted the knife to a "safe" size
Sounds like you are using a box cutter, not an xacto knife. I use an xacto knife personally and I find it works pretty well for scrapping mould-lines.

> Primer
I have the same problem with their Gray primer, it's very close to Citadel's "Dawnstone" shade (which is good in that it forms a fantastic undercoat). My trick is to look for any shininess. Bare plastic is a little shiny while the parts that are primed will be very matte gray.

> Improvement
Damn this looks so much better and smoother than the first guy you posted. Good job man.

So for next steps other people had some really good suggestions, but what I suggest you do is start working from the inside-outwards. That is, do the smaller details first and then neaten up when doing the bigger things. For example when doing the eyes (I'm noticing some overspill on the left eye lens) paint them in first and then when you put on the blue for the helmet you have to be careful around the lenses, but you can fix the overspill. You can use this technique for the eyes, face-grill, the tubing between armour sections, etc.

Is it just the trick of the light or is there a dark spot on the marine's forehead, just above the right eye? I wonder if some of the Drakenhoff Nightshade wash pooled there. Generally speaking when washing marines I like to do a targeted recess wash, just putting the shade into the recesses, joints, and other places shadows lurk.

Anyways, keep it up. Looks a heck of a lot better already.

Seeing as how Primaris got new Squad Markings. Was thinking of making my own for the Minotaurs.

Thoughts? Just threw these up.

I would say so. A lil bit out shined by the mini

How the fuck do I get an even coat everywhere with priming
>>
>>54212576

Keep brushing until it dries. I find to get an even coating that way. Gotta work fast spreading it though, primer dries pretty fast.

Oh man, only a matter of time until you've interred it into a dread...
