And this is Sinister Dexter, where the bullets are cheap, the women expensive, and the hour is small on Central European Time.

Having accidentally caused a power vacuum among the crime families of the urban megatropolis Downlode thanks to a dedication to professional standards above and beyond the call of duty, Finnegan Sinister, last of the Lyrical Gangstas, and his partner in crime Ramone Algonquin Winnebago Dexter, now stand as the left and right hand of a new Queenpin: the dangerous dame Demi Octavo.

Sinister Dexter provides a wealth of inspiration to anyone interested in urban action, cyberpunk sci-fi concepts, or even just good old fashioned ultra violence. Downlode’s urban argot of street slang and swearing as well as its colourful cast of characters could be a particular boon to shadowrunners, hive scum and lowlifes of every stripe.

After Murder 101 ended Finnigan and Ramone went back to doing a series of shorter stories exploring their day jobs and Demi's rule as Queenpin, but that'll have to wait until tomorrow. If the thread's still here I'll see you scuzzpucks then, but until then I hope you've enjoyed everything so far. If there are any more requests I can look to seeing what I can do as well.

Aw yiss, I knew you'd deliver Shakaranon. By the by, I read the sequels to the first Shakara, and I gotta say though the artwork was amazing the plot was actually a little bit lacklustre. Didn't matter though, the world is so out-there and bizarre that I didn't care. A solid read, will go back to. Thanks again, you da man.

Thanks for posting all these, mate.

The art's very hit-or-miss and the stories are like 15-second shorts, but there's a lot of atmosphere there and the background kind of accretes over time like soot in a smoker's lungs.

Wow over 20 years since that first pulp fiction spoof introduction, I now feel old

Sinister/ Dexter are a weird one. They are like the Stargate SG1 of 2000ad. Never actually bad but rarely 100% great either and always just chugging along just popular enough to avoid cancellation.
Still there are some genuinely interesting world building and fun characters
>>
>>54148111
I mean, 100% great is pretty fucking hard to find. When it comes to 2000AD you've got the first couple chapters of Nemesis the Warlock and that's it. I'd say Sinister Dexter is among the better properties to come out of 2000ad.

It was certainly lucky to appear during the mid-90s when there was honestly not a huge amount of competition for attention. It's also one of those series that could have done with a few more rest periods - in raw page numbers and stories it became one of the top 10 largest 2000AD strips ever in a fraction of the time it took something like Strontium Dog or Rogue Trooper. That wasn't so bad when it was fresh and new but oh dear as the 90s faded into the 00s...

They've largely been forgotten about now, but they're both quite nice for their time. They're also both tie-ins for the Stallone film, but the SNES/ Mega Drive version is based more off the comics and continues on past the events of the film to include Gila Munja mutants and a climax on Deadworld where you have to face off against the Four Dark Judges.

Way way waaaay back in the dim and distant past of 1983 there was also a Nemesis the Warlock beat-em-up for C64 and Amstrad with music by Rob Hubbard.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rmt4mdyIEuE

The game publisher Rebellion currently owns the magazine entirely and made Judge Dredd VS Death and Rogue Trooper in the PS2 era. They came to own 2000AD almost by accident - they were looking to get the licence for a Strontium Dog game and discovered that the then owners cared so little for their properties that they could scoop up all the rights at a bargain basement price!

Another film tie in here, combining Fin and Dex with Vector 13 (a series based around spooky tales told by Men In Black heavily inspired by the X-Files. It was again very popular in its day, with the MiB even taking over the comic from Tharg the Mighty as editor/MC for a time)

It was ridiculous. It was just another 90s gimmick to get people interested, like Grant Morrison and Mark Miller's "Summer Offensive" with Big Dave et al, or the infamous SEX ISSUE!, but really it was just an updated version of Tharg's Terror Tales or Future Shocks with a conspiracy twist. They also still hold up reasonably well, I've thought about doing at least a few for people who like Delta Green and the like.

Nah, it was this one,1066. The publishers courted controversy by putting the "not for sale to children" sticker on the cover and putting the whole thing in a sealed bag like a jazz mag. The cover star was from a new series called Space Girls, a terrible parody of the Spice Girls that didn't so much fall flat as crater from orbit. Aside from that, the actual content barely bordered on the risqué - the Sinister Dexter story is this one >>54148600, Nikolai Dante's is the one where he has sex with a lady with a Rasputin beard (that's it, that's all it is. It was a nightmare to try and censor), and the Dredd one... actually, I found that kind of funny, but I'm terrifically immature. Someone programs an enormous number of stolen sex-droids to target Dredd. Dredd, pure soul that he is, doesn't like it one bit.

>>54149075
Its the dystopian future, of course they teach memes in school. Although that said, as a concept memes weren't anywhere near as well known in 1996ish. This is before even Image Macros was the preferred parlance.

OK, so, we've basically exhausted this thread with just one story left ("Whack the Dinosaur") for the second collection. Its very late so I won't be able to make a new thread and finish it off now, but I've included it here for the completionists
https://www.mediafire.com/folder/73v5qt9ir21f0/Sinister_Dexter_2_-_Murder_101

There are, I believe, five print collections of SinDex but that only takes the series up to about the year 2000 and I don't think any new ones have come out or reprints made since 2009. I think you can get volume 5 in digital form but for everything else you'll need to look for the original print runs. IDW also seem to have come out with their own version, which appears to be a reprinted selection of the old stories rather than anything new.

Assuming my internet doesn't crap out again I'm happy to do more tomorrow. Alternatively we could move onto something else. I'll be happy with whatever the consensus is, if anything.

Nemesis the Warlock is an heady mix of sword and sorcery action, apocalyptic science fiction and lunatic screed, where the hero is Elric as motorbike dragon Satan and the villain is one of the most joyously hateable bastards in all of 2000AD's history. The three or so artists on the first few books each have their own style but really bring out the Gothic medieval weirdness of humanity's distant future and the truly alien nature of the wider universe, while Pat Mills came up with some of the best work of his long career. For better or worse the later books up the Mills Factor considerably and the art becomes much more of an acquired taste, and they also rely much more heavily on knowledge of other 2000AD strips like Flesh, The ABC Warriors, and others.

Give it a go is all I'm saying.

If you're into 40k it'll also be immediately obvious how enormous the debt 40k owes to the series, which provides its own fun little game as you read along.

Why do they keep switching Dex from latino to black?
>>
>>54164517
To be fair, they go back and forth on whether Finny is a Kabuki theatre enthusiast or just Irish. If I recall correctly Dex is Spanish and has a dark-skinned bullfighter father and a paler mother, though I don't know if that was retconned in to partly explain the changing features or whether it was planned from the start.

>>54157683
For a variety of good reasons he has a real bee in his bonnet about hypocrisy, organised religion in general and the Catholic Church in particular which does come out very clearly whenever he writes about the Inquisition.

Speaking of here's my general plan: we'll do a bit of Nemesis next for >>54149507 and because its just a classic that's always worth rereading; then some Strontium Dog for >>54157395 and because not only is there a Mongoose RPG but I've never actually storytimed any of it before; then maybe Leviathan and some of the other fine stories which link to it. This way there's a nice spread of inspiring stories for gms and players with a variety of interest - Nemesis should be required reading for 40k fans, Strontium Dog is interesting sci-fi, has its own game and is all about bounty hunters (so it has plot hooks built in), and the Edginton stories are a shoe-in for Call of Cthulu and similar.

I don't really want to plan out further than that because life has a nasty habit of getting in the way, but Grudd willing we might be able to do some more after that. War of the Worlds: Scarlet Traces maybe? XTNCT? Zombo? Tales of Telguuth for high fantasy pick&mix? Rogue Trooper (and/or Jaegir) or Bad Company? Lawless? Just back to Dredd? There's all sorts of fun stuff.

I know it's just a goddamned pulp comic from the 90's, but
>rounds loaded into a gun
>one by one
how the fuck else would you load rounds into a magazine? I don't fucking get what the author was trying to convey there. As opposed to buyng a whole preloaded gun magazine of 'em? huh.

While pre-loaded disposable plastic mags (and indeed guns) are a thing in some of the 2000AD universes (I seem to remember a Dredd story about traceless weapons) I don't think that's the idea.

It's more that - rather than cramming the rounds in absentmindedly or using a stripper clip or whathaveyou - Sinister mindfully loads the rounds individually, with his full attention. He doesn't skimp on any step of the process. It's all ritualistic.

I think we're missing a Sinister Dexter strip here... there was a long run where they went into the Maul, as part of a kill team. Plus there's one where Dexter might be a serial killer who stabs women?

Those are in the next book of stories, respectively titled "Mother Lode and the Red Admiral" and "Slay Per View".

Based Shakaranon, have you a link to your grand archive of Sinister Dexter?
I hadn't realised how much I missed them.
