Thread Question:
What card describes you best as a deckbuilder and why? Not necessarily your favorite card, just the card that exemplifies your EDH life goals

Mine is pic related, I love to get huge value with low cmc spells, so wiping the board and reanimating my own stuff at the same time feels great

One of my favorite EDH cards is Lurking Predators. It's very similar to Rhystic Study and the randomness leads to some very fun boards. Sometimes it's a do-nothing card but in 4 or more player games it can be incredible and when you've got some way to tutor or put creatures on top of your deck it's extremely fun.

I've made plays like Worldly Tutoring for Mystic Snake in response to the trigger and those are my favorite part of magic. Other times it is just a Timmy card that gives you free fatties.

Hey guys what are some good ways to win with Zur?

I'd like to make my Zur not a hard combo deck, but have them in there just in case. Is Voltron good? Should I look at stax maybe?
>>
>>54070223
I didn't even know that was a thing.
>>
>>54070269
Voltron seems doable. Steel of the Godhead and Edge of the Divinity alone can make him threatening. Toss in something like Champion's Helm and you'll be good to go.

If you don't want to just combo off, then I think a combo of lockdown and Voltron works. Get a bunch of enchants to hinder your opponents...prison effects, propaganda effects, Karmic Justice...

Then load up Zur with what >>54070305 mentions, and Ethereal Armor.

Oh yes, and Imprisoned in the Moon is amazing in Zur, especially on Commanders. My buddy played it on an opponent and the used Copy Enchantment to play it on me.

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/dead-investments

the goal of the deck is to make value plays and maybe win

oloro is only in the command zone ironically. i don't think i'll ever actually bother getting him as a card, i'll just use him to tick my life up during my upkeep to trigger my friends who think wotc designed commanders are cool

I have a problem with deckbuilding I only can build either t1 decks or like 50% decks every time I try to build something in the middle it either comes out super shitty or just way too good.
I mostly play in the turn 4 combo metas playing stax and midrange decks or really bad build around me commanders for casual play
I just cant seem to get a good 75% list going that isnt just a net deck, never been a fan of net decking.
something like this list

>Gimme some combo ideas, the jankier the better.

well you're in GB and you have red's looters, so you're basically already on your way to cancer town with potential sac & recur shenanigans

Woodland Bellower to access any retarded good 3-mana creature (Somberwald Sage, Eternal Witness, Fierce Empath)

Birthing Pod and Eldritch Evolution to further cancer up your shit

etc

i could go on so just look at my sultai deck prototype and copypaste all the green/black cards into your deck

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/sultai-bullshit-fuck-you-wotc/

add red's looters and some red goodstuffs like shivan harvest and sire of insanity, win with value

Shu Yun, but all of the choices you gave are cancer desu senpai
>>
>>54070442
Well, you're running Zur, so you've got access to blue. Counterspells.

Zur can also fetch out Gift of Immortality, which can be more annoying to deal with than at first glance.
>>
>>54070619
Grey Merchant + Wound Reflection is pain.
>>
>>54070538
shu yun is the least cancer of your potential choices

oloro is honestly boring as fuck, i'd rather build something different for lifegain, even if it's weaker. kambal or brion come to mind

jeleva is also just kaalia but spells, people are going to hate you out and it's not a very nuanced deck, just typical wotc edh pandering crap

discover the fun in deckbuilding a more flavorful and obscure commander thats my advice
>>
>>54070673
Sanguine Bond is brutal too with 4+ players
>>
>>54070631
Oh yeah, Gaea's Cradle will be good in that deck because it has a lot of creatures and Candelabra of Tawnos can let you double dip on the Cradle.
>>

not being overly reliant on permanents
I know I know this is edh but getting value without being super susceptible to removal is something that makes a lot of decks function much better

>"tutor" not in the name but it is a tutor
Cocksuckers at wotc ignoring tradition really frustrates me. Having continuity and identifiable trends in the cards can give the game an extra je ne sais quoi instead of being a generic "fantasy game".

For the first ~15 years of the game they actually put in the effort to be consistent and have little winks to the fans with this kind of thing.
>>
>>54070749
It's better than diabolic tutor, and people run that.

Even at 5 mana though it doesn't seem awful for BBM (but probably just that deck)

>>
>>54071154
he's probably still decent value in alesha since you can build black focus with your permanents (grave pact, phyrexian arena, etc)

this card fits me well. Its a br staple for me but its also super secret tech that never once was a dead draw.

you look at it once, and thinks its really good.
look at it a second time, and think its really bad.
THEN you look at it a third time, you realize this can be devistating and can turn bad trades into good ones. add that with wither creatures and the new scorpion god, and you are looking at getting some draws on top of it.

quick question though, if a creature with the ability died and got reanimated in the same turn, would it still have the triggered ability?

it's different when they print cards in sets for other formats. in something like gatecrash, they couldn't just go full retard and print a really strong card with no drawbacks. they might have been thinking about EDH when they printed the card, but it's still not specifically made to sell packs to EDH players

however commander sets let them go full retard with their card designs, so you get stuff like prosh, oloro and jeleva which are just dumb, ez-mode cookie cutter commanders for people who just want the easiest way to win casual games with their 99 cards of mismashed unoptimized jank

They can do that because edh is an eternal format. When they make carss for edh sets, they dont need to concern themselves with having it be balanced in standard. Most would consider that a GOOD thing. Id say its a bigger issue that they dont tend to take advantage of that as much as they did the first two commander sets.

Those people don't play Oloro or Prossh (srsly stop picking on Jeleva is it because of storm cEDH? She's not central to the archetype) on my experience. They would play Sedris, or Sen Triplets.
>>
>>54073782
Prossh is fine, Food Chain is the main problem.
Jeleva isn't even good, she's only "competitive" because Grixis is the a good storm color combo and she helps facilitate that.
And Oloro is just annoying, but not the biggest problem with the format.

People always want to bitch about powerful commanders. Back in 2010, Rafiq, Scion, and Zur being the boogeymen of the format, and none of those were designed for EDH.

Adun, Kresh and Sek'Kuar seem very viable to me. Not as retardedly powerful as Prossh, but very much playable.
>>
>>54073882
If i wanted dragon tribal, i would not build prosh. If youre looking through the lens of making the absolute best decks instead of stupid shit like dragon tribal, there will always be extremely narrow choices because you should only choose the best and that isnt prosshs fault. Jeleva isnt even that good, its her colors that are useful. The only reason you play het over, say Golza Zar is because her ability might actually be useful once in a blue moon at high level play.
>>
>>54073959
i never said they were explicitly strong, they were just made to be boring and easy commanders for casual edh. no one is going "wow check out my really spicy oloro brew" or "wow my meren deck is SO unique" because both of those commanders just give you free value at almost no cost, and they slot in just fine to just about any deck in their colors

meanwhile, building something like grimgrin actually forces you to think a bit. what's the best ratio of creatures to sac? do you need other sac outlets? should you run reanimation or just tokens? should you run zombie tribal effects? is it worth putting grimgrin at the helm of a UB goodstuff deck? and so on. it takes actual work to make someone like grimgrin to work, and it's all the more satisfying when it does.

How the fuck is Prossh gonna sac ARTIFACTS and ENCHANTMENTS, an interaction exclusive of Shattergang Brothers? Ok he does sac creatures but Jund sac tribal can include other card types as sac fodder and then Bros seems better fitted for the mission.

Also I never said Adun is really good, I said VIABLE. As is you can make a deck that doesn't lose to craw wurm.dek with him because he's cheap CMC-wise and has a relevant ability if you build with it in mind.
>>
>>54074400
If all your going to say is that a card is "viable" in edh, than why even open your mouth? Every card is "viable" in this format. Are you so desperate for attention that you have to tell everyone the obvious? If adun is viable so is chimney imp and storm crow. I am sure you could create some sort of voltron storm crow deck and beat people to death with a 50/50 storm crow if you tried hard enough and played in a weak enough meta.

Is the reason you speak up to say useless shit because you are starved for attention? Is that why you trip?

Now is my time!
I'm fairly new to the format and I'm brewing The Scarab God. I started by using Gatherer to search for zombies, and then added a bunch of Dimir goodstuff. I need to cut it down to 100, but for now is there any good tech I've missed?
http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/29-06-17-MdZ-the-scarab-god/
I have Karn and Grim Monolith in there because I already had Training Grounds for Scarab. And please ignore the random Waste Not with one discard card in the deck. My playgroup has a shitton of wheels.
>>
>>54074511
this deck seems eerily similar to the monoblack zombies one i helped with a day ago

my advice to you is to not explicitly build for a zombie tribal. they aren't fun, they aren't cheap, they aren't good. instead, since you're playing scarab god, i'd recommend building a lazav-like group mill and focus on reanimating both your own shit and your opponent's stuff with scarab god
>>
>>54074511
>>54074576
but if you really want to build zombies because of flavor and stuff (which is perfectly good as a reason, however i wouldn't recommend scarab god for that) then you might want to just focus on token generation and the few goodstuff zombies

here's the zombie token i quickly brewed when scarab god was spoiled, maybe look at it for advice, i don't know

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/zombo-tokens/
>>
>>54074511
There's too much random zombies, maybe cut down to just lords and play utility creatures to eventually Embalm? Also Heartstone helps making Scarab's ability cheaper too.

>>54074501
There's a whole spectrum of viability in EDH and most people seem to forget that sometimes. And Adun isn't "viable in Craw Wurm meta", you misinterpreted that. With the analogy I meant to say that he isn't so useless that a very low powered deck would beat it. Adun is perfectly playable as a commander in a 75% meta if you make the right card choices, which is the point of the discussion: You don't need to resort to Prossh if you want to play Jund at all times.

If every time any poster wanted to voice an observation about a card or deck you though "Every card is "viable" in this format." no one would ever post in this general. You're resorting to scarecrowing and black on white comparisons. What do you want, a full Adun list? I could try and type up one as soon as I'm home, it would spark up more discussion.

and Chimney Imp is good in Shirei

So after playing my Hapatra deck a few times one guy started bitching about it using infinite combo's to win.
I'm a beginner at edh, so I didn't really make the deck with that in mind, I just found them while playing. I don't think the deck is even that good, 75% of it is shit I had lying around.
It's also quite obvious that everyone at the table should remove Hapatra asap, so that's on them. If I have Hapatra out and I'm able to cast cutthroat + blowfly infestation, tough shit.
It's just one guy that's being a dick, maybe I should call him out on the fact that he plays Krenko. Either he wins by turn 6, or bricks.
Anyway, should I remove the infinites? Blowfly infestation is kind of a major crux of the deck

Fuck him, a three card combo of cards that are individually great fits in the deck is fair.

Krenko is more linear than what you're playing and he's just bitching because he lost.
>>
>>54074674
>Adun is perfectly playable as a commander in a 75% meta
>75% meta

What does this even mean? "Viable in a 75% meta" is a nonsense phrase because it has no real qualitative data. I could easily build a brago stax deck, use it to lock down or remove everything my opponents have and swing in with storm crow for the win.

Does that mean that storm crow is viable in "75% metas"?

Like I said, it's edh. Everything is viable. You can only really get into a conversation about what's not viable when you are speaking about higher tiers of competitive play.

That being said, you can talk about what's good and what's not, and you can make it have meaning by comparing to existing cards. By this metric you can safely say that adun and storm crow aren't good.

But I wouldn't expect you to understand this, because as far as trips go you are dumb as hell and I have never seen you contribute anything of value.

Blightsteel or either Ulamog will do the job if you just wanna kill fools. I prefer original Ulamog because it's pretty tough to recover from even a single swing. Jin Gitaxias and Consecrated Sphinx will both draw you enough cards that you'd be hard pressed to lose, but they're pretty fragile comparatively. Akroma, Iona, and Avacyn are all resilient in their own way and make pretty good beatsticks if you're in charge of the game. Also consider maybe some of the Sword of X and Y cycle, I've found them to be reasonable ways to finish people off in the right deck.

Blightsteel is one of two ways:
>instant game-winning presence people hate more than anything
or
>instantly exiled, despite the insane combo required to set him up.

The best part about blightsteel is cloning him a bunch and instantly killing the table, but you wont be able to get haste on him unless you're incredibly lucky, particularly in esper, so you need to be counterspell backed if you're going to drop him.

Now, for artifact creatures, I like Inkwell Leviathan and Magister Sphinx, they're both ungodly powerful the second they come out and need to be answered quickly. Darksteel Colossus is blightsteel's brother with 1 cheaper CMC and no trample, though that's entirely up to you if you want to run it, particularly since it's less effective but gets less hate. Mycosynth Golem is awesome if you're planning on actually using creatures, because it'll often be very cost-effective and it'll let you play other things in your hand. Enigma Sphinx is also pretty neat because it cascades for 7, but the 3rd from the top clause after it dies is kind of... interesting. Memnarch is the man, always. Myr-battle sphere is backbreaking if you can flicker it, like I do in brago. Gemini Engine is really nifty if you can pump it, but esper control isn't fantastic at that. Steel hellkite is usually the go-to for just about anyone in any deck, but it might get you a lot of hate for running it. Silent arbiter is also a giant dick, particularly if you're running blightsteel.
>>

I felt sort of bad but then again... was playing against Leovold.

On a related note, have other paper players tried out the Magic Online duel rules? I absolutely love them. They seem better than French commander for 1v1, and it's easier to get people to play with them since it's official rules.
>>
>>54076476
True and I'm running a few tutors. I guess what I really want is a powerful creature that's tough to remove and that doesn't need anything else to close out a game.

>>54076459
There isn't too much exiling in my meta but it won't take long for them to catch on. Even with Swan Song I'll need 13 mana just to get him on the table before he can do anything. It's why I'm looking for an alternative.

Some of those are definitely interesting but might take some time to finish games if they're 4/x?
>>
>>54076607
Well, Magister Sphinx is mandatory. Nuking your opponent's life is too good to ignore, and I'd also run tree of perdition if you can, because they're both fantastic together in multiplayer games. Inkwell Leviathan is a big stick that has island walk, and a lot of the decks you're going to want to beat down will run blue. Steel Hellkite is amazing if you're running a lot of rocks, because you can activate it's ability multiple times to clear the board, and zero cost things will instantly be destroyed. Those are probably your best bets out of what's listed just on their own.

A lot of the other things require particular set ups to be effective, and are less good in a vacuum. For example, Memnarch is disgusting if you have a glut of blue mana and/or sculpting steel, though I'm sure your familiar with it and Myr Battlesphere will alpha strike someone after flickering it 5 or 6 times, WITHOUT dealing combat damage. Gemini Engine is a bit more niche, more gruul/golgari, but it's fairly effective at what it does none the less.

As for blightsteel, cheat it out. If you're hardcasting it, you're doing it wrong. Kuldotha Forgemaster is usually the go-to card for cheating him out, but there are a ton of ways to get him on the field early. Mass polymorph is rather nifty if you run a lot of weenies because you can scoop them up, shit out a bunch of fatties from your deck, and cackle maniacally when your opponent doesn't understand what just hit them.

Now, if you want non-artifact game winners in esper colours, I'm particularly fond of Jin "the chin" Jan "the man" Gitaxias, depending on your control setup. Geth is also pretty powerful on his own if you manage to mill your opponent's goodstuff, and Havengul Lich is hilariously strong for what it does.
>>
>>54076607
I mean you could use master transmuter to cheat him out turn 5.
>>
>>54076820
Damn good ideas, thanks. I've definitely got to make some changes. I can control the board and win but closing takes too long and with a little luck opponents will be able to prolong the game by stopping what should have been my last moves. And yeah, hardcasting Blightsteel is a bitch.

Steel Hellkite got me all excited but it can only be activated once.
>>
>>54076905
Fuck, sorry about the hellkite, I totally forgot it has that clause.

How does your control setup work? What do you try to do and how do you do it?

What's a good budget Commander to play in a semi competitive meta? People aren't throwing down Imperial seals and and the like but they still run pretty hard core decks like an Animar and karador.

With Animar and Karador you're not going to have much luck with Ruric Thar, which is what I usually recommend for friends on a budget, but you might get some use out of Lavinia of the Tenth, Brago, or Grand Arbiter Augustin IV. Maybe finding pieces that will work with all three.

>>

I'm aware that it is rare, but it's just a worse vampiric tutor that's why I'm saying unjustified. The only reason it's expensive is because of it's rarity which could be changed but nope.

Maybe I should be clearer or something, sorry.
>>
>>54077781
704.5k. If a player controls two or more legendary permanents with the same name, that player chooses one of them, and the rest are put into their owners' graveyards.

Yeah, but "a worse Vampiric Tutor" isn't a bad card. Imperial Seal is still a great card, and add in that it's incredibly rare and it becomes very expensive.

There are no hard locks or anything, it's just a lot of removal, board wipes, draw, and counters. I make the game go long so by the time I'm ready to do some damage my opponents are often out of gas. They've used up and lost most of their cards and are either top decking or very low on resources. Their commanders have shown up and been killed a few times so they're prohibitively expensive to cast. I have a few discard spells like Mind Shatter/Twist to help make sure they can't really put up a fight later.

Once I'm in that position with a lot of cards in hand and a clear board, I move in. Just need something to finish the job more quickly and reliably. Using my Commander can work but it'd take a while and they have no built in protection. A Path to Exile or Pongify is all it'll take to set me back a few times and let them try to topdeck some answers, assuming I don't have multiple counters in hand. But a hexproof or indestructible creature to seal the deal would probably be a lot more useful

Hey guys what are some good land choices for 2 color decks? besides fetches, shocks, check lands, painlands, fast lands , and scary lands? I already have those in plus things like evolving wilds, terramorphic expanse, command tower, etc. but I still think I could vary out my lands more since the rest are all basics. They don't even have to be certain colors and could just be colorless utility stuff. I tried looking for a List of utilities and the lists were all really old and I feel like there could be newer tech.
my commanders in looking for stuff for are nin, brion, and Olivia

>>

It's from the same era where lightning bolt was a common. Wizards wasn't afraid to print good cards, now they're too worried about "limited and standard environments" to print anything useful at lower than rare.
>>
>>54081640
Take mind to how many colorless you run. In the case of Nin, you don't want to oversaturate your land count to colorless. Stick with 2 or 3 at most.

Also keep in mind of tap lands. Can you deck afford to slow down a turn? If not, try to limit yourself of tap lands to around 4 or 5. Go for taplands that naturally produce mana rather than stuff like Vivids (for more colored decks).

She will never be good but you can make an impact if you focus on kneecapping your rivals. Her best wincon is Voltron, and ideally you make the board so fucking toxic that nothing else can stick. well I mean Boros is Boros so being competitive at all is going to be tough.

Some pros and cons for flip avacyn
pro:
indestructible on a stick
flash
decent body
saves you from most boardwipes
can be repeated even if she dies for just a few extra mana each time.

cons
surprisingly bad for angel tribal whether or not she's the commander.
depending on how you want your deck to be (i.e voltron, creature swarm, etc) other commanders do it better.
her flip effect doesn't kill most things in edh by the time you'd probably flip her so it's kind of useless. not totally useless but for the most part you won't get too much value for it
>>
>>54085849
