1794-the-victory-of-fleurus.jpg
2MB, 1859x1111px
Today marks 223 years since the Battle of Fleurus, a major engagement between the army of the First French Republic and the Coalition Army (Great Britain, Hanover, Dutch Republic, and Habsburg Monarchy), in the most decisive battle in the Low Countries during the French Revolutionary Wars. Both sides had forces in the area numbering in the vicinity of 80,000 men, but the French were able to more effectively concentrate their troops in order to achieve victory. The Allied defeat led to the permanent loss of the Austrian Netherlands and to the destruction of the Dutch Republic. The battle marked a turning point for the French army which afterwards remained ascendant throughout the rest of the War of the First Coalition. The French use of the reconnaissance balloon l'Entreprenant marked the first military use of an aircraft that had influence on the outcome of the battle.

The Austrian commander, Feldmarschall Coburg, split his army into five columns and launched the main attack. l'Entreprenant, operated by the Aerostatic Corps, continuously informed General Jourdan about Austrian movements. The Austrians managed to break through both French wings, pushing back Marceau on the right wing and Montaigu on the left wing. But the French center under Lefebvre held and then counterattacked, and the Austrian assault petered out. Colonel Nicolas Soult, then serving as Lefebvre's Chief of staff, wrote that it was, "fifteen hours of the most desperate fighting I ever saw in my life."

Coburg neglected to press on and, uncertain of the outcome, the Austrian commander lost his nerve and fell back to Braine-l'Alleud and Waterloo, granting the French an unexpected victory. This was the final straw that caused the allies to retire back over the Rhine, leaving the French free rein in Belgium and the Netherlands.

It is generally agreed that the battle was a costly one for the French, with casualties estimated between five and six thousand. The Allied losses have always been in dispute. Traditional estimates attribute "considerable casualties" to Coburg's army, and hover near five thousand Allied killed and wounded. However, according to historian Digby Smith, Austrian-Dutch losses numbered 208 killed, 1,017 wounded, and 361 captured. In addition, the French captured one mortar, three caissons, and one standard, while the Austrians captured one cannon and one standard.

The victory precipitated a full Allied withdrawal from Belgium and allowed French forces to push north into the Netherlands. By the end of 1795, the Dutch Republic was extinguished. After Fleurus, the republican army would keep its momentum in the war, staying on the offensive until its eventual victory against the First Coalition in 1797. Politically, the battle invalidated the argument that continuation of the revolutionary Reign of Terror was necessary because of the military threat to France's very existence. Thus, some would argue, victory at Fleurus was a leading cause of the Thermidorian Reaction a month later.

As one of the grandest battles of the Revolution, Fleurus has a lot of colour and variety on a pretty epic scale, in the best tradition of 18th-century warfare. The use of the balloon adds an interesting element, finally giving a good justification for the wargamer's "eye of God"!

WWII: Operation WhiteBox is a roleplaying game of WWII special forces action designed for compatibility with the Swords & Wizardry WhiteBox roleplaying game.

In WWII: Operation WhiteBox, the player characters (PCs) play the role of WWII special forces operatives. They may be formally trained and part of an officially designated special forces unit such as the SAS or U.S. Army Airborne, or they may simply be guerilla fighters dedicated to making life hard for the German Army. They may also be covert agents working for organizations such as the SOE or OSS. Whatever their affiliation, their job is to complete missions behind enemy lines, paving the way for the next Allied advance.

Any tips on filing down the helmets on 1/72 plastic soldiers? I'm a total begginner at this. Using an old nail file doing circular motions on it but it doesn't really seem like I'm achieving anything.
>>
>>54030904
For 1/72 I usually use a sharp craft knife / stanley knife. Carefully trim off the raised area you want to remove. Cut as close as you can to the actual surface without cutting into it. Filing or sanding can leave you with a rough edge, while cutting gives a smooth one.

Paint will cover a multitude of sins, so don't worry too much!

It's ancient now but there's GDW's Over The Top, which was designed for 6mm thru 15mm. More recently there's Great War Spearhead. We have the former in our folders but sadly not the latter.

There is also Contemptible Little Armies (which we have) but I think it was designed for 28mm. Might be worth a look nonetheless.

Me because that fucker was wrong. Napoleon was outnumbered in most of his famous battles and yet loses less men than the armies he is facing. The strength of the levee-en-masse did not lay it it's huge numbers, it lay in the morale of the soldiers and flexibility it gave the officer corps to recruit from the ranks.

Just look at some numbers.
>Austerlitz
Napoopan outnumbered by 10.000 men, loses 20.000 men less than the enemy.
>Jena-Auersted
Napoopan outnumbered by more then 40.000 men. 20.000 losses less
>Wagram
Outnumbered by 30.000
Losses a couple of thousand less then the Austrian losses.
>Leipzig
Outnumbered 1-2, Allies suffer 30.000 casualties more.

Napoleon fought hard and smart.
Except at waterloo
He hardly ever relied on manpower (when he did in Russia he famously fucked it up).

Ok, also.
Austerlitz was really a defensive battle in which he counterattacked.

Jena was the battle at which Napoleon commanded and there he was only outnumbered by about half of that, Davout at Auerstadt really pulled the miracle there.

Wagram was fought on a large flat field in which a huge concentration of artillery guaranteed that both sides were going to take large losses, and whoever's will held longest would win. Napoleon was hardly a stellar general here.

Leipzig was a PURELY defensive battle, hence the larger allied losses. (similar at Dresden, which was still a remarkable victory.

Napoleon campaigned STRATEGICALLY aggressively to put his opponent in a situation where they would have to defend untenable areas, or even attack him. He was not really any more successful on the attack than other "good" generals of his day on the tactical battlefield, see Waterloo, Borodino, the bloodbaths at Wagram.

Napoleon's early campaigns in Italy and 1805-1806 (whilst armies were still small enough for him to micromanage, and opposing armies still hadn't embraced army reforms in his model) have really gone a long way to disguising a lot of mediocre performances, Eylau (in the snow), Borodino, Waterloo. Napoleon had his share of tactical "ducks".

I'm not arguing here that Napoleon wasn't a great (if not the greatest) commander, but I would strongly argue that his genius was in Strategic and Operational scale, tactically he was above average but certainly remarkably often unimaginative. Almost all of his campaigns were excellent strategically, except for the highly perplexing decision making in the 1812 Russian Campaign.

>No sleeping on watch!

It's not like keeping a watch is important on a ship. What are you going to do? Run into a cargo ship? American ships are much better than that, since they're the greatest navy of all time.

The fact that an Arleigh Burke DD was taken by surprise and run into by a cargo ship when the DD has a half-dozen radar systems and two dozen people on watch at any given time whose SOLE JOB is to keep an eye out for things that might be a threat to the ship makes this a totally different and far worse collision than the few hundred rammings every year by underpaid, understaffed, drunken freighter crews.

At the very least, it's a good example of why the American navy is the most shit tier navy in all of human history. Not even the goddamn Russians could lose a fight to a freighter. It's just a shit tier navy, a shit tier country, and a population of shit tier human beings that, if there was just and generous god, would have been wiped off the face of the earth back in the Dark ages.

Shanghai and Nanjing 1937: Massacre on the Yangtze (Osprey Campaign 309)

From 1931, China and Japan had been embroiled in a number of small-scale conflicts that had seen vast swathes of territory being occupied by the Japanese. On 7 July 1937, the Japanese engineered the Marco Polo Bridge Incident, which led to the fall of Beijing and Tianjin and the start of a de facto state of war between the two countries. This force then moved south, landing an expeditionary force to take Shanghai and from there drive west to capture Nanjing. This fully illustrated book tells the story of the Japanese assault on these two great Chinese cities. The battle of Shanghai was the first large-scale urban warfare of World War II and one of the bloodiest battles of the entire Sino-Japanese War. The determined resistance by Chinese inflicted sizable Japanese casualties, and may well have contributed to the subsequent massacre of prisoners and civilians in the battle of Nanjing, tarnishing Japan's reputation in the eyes of the world.

Soviet Lend-Lease Tanks of World War II (Osprey New Vanguard 247)

The Red Army suffered such catastrophic losses of armour in the summer of 1941 that they begged Britain and the United States to send tanks. The first batches arrived in late 1941, just in time to take part in the defence of Moscow. The supplies of British tanks encompassed a very wide range of types including the Matilda, Churchill, and Valentine and even a few Tetrarch airborne tanks. American tanks included the M3 (Stuart) light tank and M3 (Lee) medium tank and the M4 Sherman tank, which became so common in 1944-45 that entire Soviet tank corps were equipped with the type. With these Western tanks, the Soviets were finally able to beat back the German tide in the East. This study examines the different types of tanks shipped to the Soviet Union during the war, Soviet assessments of their merits and problems, and combat accounts of their use in Soviet service using full colour artwork, contemporary photographs and detailed cut-away illustrations.

St Lo 1944: The Battle of the Hedgerows (Osprey Campaign 308)

Following the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944, the First US Army engaged in a six-week struggle to break out of the Normandy beach-head. The hedgerow country of lower Normandy, called the Bocage, presented unanticipated tactical problems since it proved to be ideal for German infantry defense. This book examines the brutal attritional struggle in June-July 1944 to overcome the determined German defense and secure St Lô. The city was the site of a crucial cross-roads and was thus a vital target for the invading Allied forces; the initial bombing attacks were so severe that the writer Samuel Beckett would later report that it had been 'bombed out of existence in one night'. The attack by ground forces turned into a brutal attritional struggle to overcome the determined German defense. Using full-color artwork, photographs and maps, this is the engaging story of one of the key engagements in the Battle of Normandy.

>is there any news on what wargames they're working on next?
Their new gangster title. From the latest newsletter:
In 1919, the US Government declared the production, distribution, and sale of alcohol illegal. America officially became a ‘dry' land. That didn't stop people from drinking, however, and the rise of the ‘speakeasy' offered huge new opportunities for organized crime. Soon, cities both large and small became battlegrounds as various crime syndicates vied for control of the underground alcohol trade. In Mad Dogs With Guns, players form their own small gangs of fedora-wearing, tommy gun-wielding gangsters and battle it out with their rivals. With numerous different gangs to choose from, including cops and G-men, a fully integrated campaign system, and rules for special situations such as car chases, the game offers a huge variety of tactical challenges. Bribe public officials, attend a gangland funeral, but always watch your back - there is always another gang waiting to poach your territory…

Also there's a Bolt Action Campaign Guide for New Guinea due late next month.

Beyond Valor contained the German and Russian OOB counters, and more importantly it contained the administrative counters

For King and Country OR West of Alamain (either can be used) contained the British OOB counters

Yanks isnt as important as you only need the glider counters from that, and those can be faked. after the landings the gliders dont become too important...think maybe act as supply points in some cases for the Brits....

but yeah...as >>54079250 said. ASL can be dependent on owning a few of what are considered 'base' sets for the OOB counters.

It's not unheard of; when running this kind of RPG/skirmish game 1/48 (and 1/35) is actually a pretty nice fit. Also as >>54083660 suggests there's a lot of interesting minis and vehicles around. Interestingly, 1/48 is considered the standard scale for dollhouses.

I'm not really bothered by the scale, but the kickstarter in itself seems a little bit to ambitious. While i hope it gets funded, i somewhat doubt it.

Also they call their german plegde "Sturmführer Starter pack" while the unit you get with is from a Wehrmacht division.. meh

Have you ever heard of a magazine called RAIDS, anon? It's French language magazine about military matters that's been running since 1986, and naturally has a strong focus on their armed forces. PDFs are pretty easy to find online. Otherwise you could dig around 80s-era books on modern armies (also relatively easy to find) or even just try some serious googling around the right places, like Cold War blogs. Lastly take a look in our Modern/References folder, especially at the IGT books.

Spanish is my first language, no problem about that. The thing is, information about uniforms and military organization is virtually nonexistant (not surprising though, troops were irregulars, basically all gauchos). Will look into the Victorian Folder, thanks

Primary goal would be to get all the rules in one place. This shit with "oh the rules for X or Y terrain are in the Kampfgruppe Peiper box" has got to go.

Second, historical scenarios come with all the counters needed to play that scenario. If someone designs something around Arnhem, your box comes with Frost's Paras and Bittrich's KG. You don't have to go buy a separate box for other counters.

Third, support for out-of-print modules by making them available in PDF format. If the OOP stuff was only small conflicts that aren't popular this would be more forgivable but For King and Country (which has the British OOB) is out of print and goes for 300USD on eBay. I could buy 3 companies of 15mm WW2 off Plastic Soldier Company for that kind of money.

I don't even know how you'd fix the rules. The couple ASL communities I monitor are about 80% individuals asking the group for rules clarifications because the level of complexity has gotten out of hand. If I remember correctly, the designer of the original Squad Leader disliked ASL for that very reason.

It's a hot fucking mess which is sad because it's kinda the coolest wargame on the market.

There is - digital version is epub or something, generally for ebook readers. PDF is standard book in digital format.
>>

>>
>>54089426
PDF - the digital one is fucked because it's optimised for ebook readers, no background color, not page breaks, it's basically based on the resolution of the device. The pdf, as I said, is the standard book in digital format.

I think most of the BA books in the trove are the digitals, while the Black Powder books are the pdf versions, compare them yourself if you wish.

Or maybe they respect the wish of some people for metal minis?

Actually i think their sculptors for metal minis and their plastic mold makers aren't connected at all. Maybe these were in the making for quite some time already.

It's within the realm of plausibility but I don't think there's any hard evidence. I can't recall hard evidence for painted (metal) helmets anywhere outside the Hellenic world (in the form of traces of paint on dug up helmets, as well as artistic depictions of painted helmets) from 500s BC to the end of the Republic. There's not a whole lot of hard evidence for anything from the period though, so it comes down to whether you want to go with what's plausible or what is the current wargaming orthodoxy (which would be unpainted as far as I know).

In all honesty, the race thing was the least of the games problems.

The game had almost everyone carrying automatic weapons and even had red dot sights on some of them.

Honestly, whats the point of setting your game in WW1 if you're just going to use it as window dressing.
>>
>>54098228
>British Army

>>
>>54098286
Brewster armour that can take a lot of bullets with ease, at that.
>>
>>54098268

Yeah it was a total shitfest. There is a mode where everyone has their factions standard rifle but you're lucky if you can find a single server with enough people for a game, and since they didn't model an Italian or Turkish rifle they just gave them both Martini-Henry rifles instead kek.

>>54098286

I mean online, two of the four British classes are African or Indian, while Germany also has one it's classes as an African. It's fucking stupid and actually made me quite enraged when it first came out.

Some of the codex entries are also totally skewed, one says the entire war against Turkey was for oil. Which is a total revision of history after the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

To be honest it was an absolute disgrace, I didn't even want to own it but a friend bought me a copy and a part of me wishes I'd never even played it.
>>
>>54098358
Turks are doing a lot of revising themselves these days, even changing the memorials at Gallipoli.

I'm agree with you in principle about the racial thing but one thing did jump out at me. I found it ironic that the same anons who would post a picture of an African guy in the Freies Arabien Legion as "proof" that the Nazi Wehrmacht was some kind of racial utopia, yet denied the existence of all the black musicians in German regiments who served in Europe, including one who who an Iron Cross at Verdun.
>>
>>54098358
>>54098358

Oh also they revised Laurence of Arabia out of the picture, made the main representation of the Royal Flying Corps an American, forgot to mention that the British and American forces broke the Hindenburg line at the Battle of St Quentin Canal together (it makes it look like there were only Americans there) and lastly it completely removes any British involvement at Gallipoli when we took more casualties than all the other commonwealth forces combined and portrays the officers on the ground as cowardly and snivelling when the failure of that campaign was nothing to do with the men on the ground.

Just another day of historical revision by a nation that neither fought in WWI or WWII.

Now I'll stop before this vein on my neck pops.
>>
>>54098450

Yeah I've seen this as well, apparently there were two men of African descent in the German army throughout the war but last I heard neither of them actually fired a rifle in anger and were both, as you say, part of the military band.

Kek, yes I forgot about that. To add to this point BF1 is quite pro-German.

The presence of black dudes in the WW1 German Army is the kind of obscure and bizarre military trivia I love. BF1 is obviously retarded in having them comprise a quarter of the force, I'm not denying that. But they were there, and as one anon mentioned one even earned an Iron Cross (2nd Class, mind you). They were all bandsmen, which meant they didn't carry weapons, but it was standard practise for musicians to serve as stretcher bearers so they would have been in The Shit nonetheless. I love these kinds of obscure facts. Good collection of info on the subject here: http://s400910952.websitehome.co.uk/germancolonialuniforms/africans%20in%20german%20uniform.htm

>>54098926

>>
>>54099635

German colonial regiments never served in Europe. The Imperial army would not serve next to them, so unlike France they were never seen side by side.

Of course, now all this shit blew up, the one army that was very keen on using colonials (France) and the which took many black regiments off the Americans' hands, has no black soldiers in their roster at all.

I should also add that the same applied to Britain, their African colonial regiments never served in Europe but there were mixed armies in the middle-east. The Indian Expeditionary force was the one British exception, made up of 130,000 men in Europe but when compared to the 6 million British it was still small.

Take the basics of Lacquered Coffins, add in radar and detection, SAMs and missiles, and the stats for most modern aircraft, starting with Vietnam.
The system is planned to cover every major air engagement of the post-korea 20th century. So that means I don't have to stat out every single aircraft ever made, but just the ones that actually saw combat.
It will cover the Arab-Israeli wars, Falklands, Gulf War, Bosnia and any others I can think of.

I just built some EA-6B prowlers and next up will do some MiG-17s (in the 'snake' camo).

I'm aiming to make a game where EAW and AWACs aircraft have a reason to exist, and where fighters, bombers, EW and ground attack aircraft all interact with each other and ground targets / ground fire / SAMs.
Want to try to make an air environment like a snapshot of the Falcon 4.0 campaign, but on the tabletop.

Played shako today down at the club. Neither me or my buddy had played it before but a guy had brought his French and Prussians and all the rules / knowledge.

Very cool game system - good balance of realism and simplicity. I like the secret deployment and battle plans and the command control system as well.

The French did pretty well at the start, holding their cavalry in reserve and pushing 2 infantry divisions into the center. Prussians moved everything forward and the infantry met in the center. French infantry on their right flank formed squares to protect the center from cavalry, while dragoons were able to hold the Prussian cavalry at bay.
French cavalry on the left flank annihilated some unprepared infantry, causing the nearby Prussian infantry to form squares, which were quickly charged by French infantry and destroyed. An entire Prussian division was destroyed in this action...
Prussian cavalry on the right flank got luck and wiped an entire French division as well as the French Dragoons who put up a hell of a fight.

In the end both armies were bordering on 50% losses (after which the army immediately loses) and it was down to whoever killed the next unit. Prussian artillery was in a poor position to fire, or being overrun by French cavalry, while French artillery situated on a hill was able to finish off a few Prussian infantry units, causing a very minor victory for the French.

We played at 1/72 which was cool. Mostly Italieri makes.

Would recommend this system for anyone wanting to play Napoleonics - nice and simple but feels like you're gaming in the period. Things can also die very quickly - no "endless grinding away". If units are in the wrong place or unsupported, or fail to make a square when charged by cavalry, they're gone.

This means games can swing quite nicely - a few turns could completely change the dynamic of the winning/losing balance. The French division wiped out in our game happened in a single turn...

Thanks for the writeup anon. Shako was the first 'serious' Napoleonic wargame I got into, back when it first came out in 1995. I used 1:72 plastic too, although back then I was entirely limited to Airfix's stuff, so it was Waterloo Campaign-only for me! The Brits got Highlanders, Guards Infantry and Scots Greys; the French had Old Guard Grenadiers and Polish Lancers. Later on I discovered HaT stuff, so I was no longer triggered using the 1815 troops for Peninsula games.

It is a great system for beginners, and we have a PDF in our folders. It was covered a lot in Wargames Illustrated at the time and they published a lot of extra army lists, you could probably find those online now. Also there was a Shako 2 released in 2008.

Here's an overview just before I had formed squares to fend off the Prussian cavalry on the French right flank
As for the comparison to Black Powder - I've read through the Black Powder rules a few times and while I haven't played it, it seems like Shako accomplishes the same thing with much more clarity and simplicity. Shako does a lot more simultaneously too - all artillery is simultaneous, then all movement is done division by division alternating - with the guy who has more units under battle orders going first. Then all small arms fire is done simultaneously, and then all melee simultaneous, then all morale simultaneous. It means there is never "my turn, your turn", but 1 turn with everyone involved and it flows very quickly.

It was a game full of swings - at the start it looked like the French would dominate, crumbled a Prussian division and fended off their cavalry expertly and even destroyed a cavalry unit. The French had rolled the entire left flank and made it to the Prussian artillery (And destroyed it..) Then the Prussians had one great turn and wiped a French infantry division and suddenly it wasn't looking as good for the French
At that point both of us were nearing 50% of our army lost, so pretty even. French just snuck ahead with some great artillery fire and caused the Prussians to drop below 50% Close battle

Ooh.

It's probably way groggier than your target game, but have you seen GMT's Downtown? I know at least one person played it with minis, and it's certainly got missions where you set up the whole thing, complete with EW birds flying racetracks behind the main route, SEAD going in before the payload of the strike package, and tankers.

http://raidscalegaming.pbworks.com/w/page/37113977/5%20March%202011%20-%20Downtown%20Game%20Write%20Up is the guy doing a minis conversion, although IIRC they're limiting the area and missions for convenience.

It's a good game. There's a WW1 game based on the system too, Bloody April.

Wow, Downtown looks awesome. That guy's game looks like a lot of fun and his miniatures are beautiful.

We're aiming for something pretty simple - the usual balance of realism and simplicity. I'm also planning on having the game playable solo as part of the package.
The Flight plan will be a thing - choosing when aircraft will enter and when they will have to leave/RTB (according to their range)
I'm at the stage of feeling out the conversion between real life specifications to game stats. I have some basic aircraft for Vietnam ready so getting there...

Hey anons!
Where can i get high quality, uncut Osprey plates(photos)?
I used to get them from books, but most of them have low quality, or they are cut. I know that you have access to the plates if you become a member of the Osprey community

They've always had that ad at the front of every book where you can mail away for them

If you look in the back (sometimes the front) of the Man-At-Arms series books, you'll see an artist's note which gives you a contact address you can order stuff from. You could even buy the original paintings the plates are based on too. I grabbed pic related at random as an example.

Nice models, what scale are they? 10mm or 15mm?
>>
>>54120112
looks like 20mm

Not to be rude, but there are people's hands in that image, and those figures are far too big to be 10-15mm

Add that to the fact that he mentioned earlier the figures being 1/72, and you got yourself a moron.

I've done a few OPs when the normal guy was busy, it's not necessarily super hard - you can get most of the stuff from Wikipedia.

So, I am a total noob scrub to WW2 games, and unsure how to go about getting into it. I've done some other wargaming, and the painting aspect is my least favorite. I just don't have it in me to do it, so I will be buying pre-painted mini's. But, I would like some input on the system to use, as this is kinda different than what I am used to.

So which rule set would you guys recommend? I was looking at both Blitzkrieg Commander and Chain of Command, but not sure which is better, or if there is a better one than those. Also, you guys have any input on pre-painted minis? I am all ears.
>>
>>54127735
Almost forgot, my scale is probably going to be 15mm.
>>
Anyone know where to get good 28mm samurai/ashigaru besides Perry, Steel Fist, and Assault Group? I know Warlord is selling the old Wargames Factory stuff and those are pretty good but I'm looking for some other companies.
>>
>>54127735
Chain of Command would be a good start for a budding 15mm gamer. What do you mean by pre-painted minis?
>>
>>54127735
BKC and Chain of Command are two very different games. Consider whether you want to fight reasonably large engagements involving battalions and regiments, or whether you're more interested in smaller enaggements involving companies.
For me, I find the smaller sized engagements catered for by rulesets like CoC (or Bolt Action) gets a bit anonymous and generic after a while. I'd rather have a bigger chunk of the historical engagements able to be represented on the tabletop. But other people have no problem with it. You'll know which you are.

I just bought great war spearhead and wow, this looks fun as hell. Might have to buy a couple of corps next month.

Yes, a lot of the included TO&Es (TsO&E?) include the odd base of cavalry or bicycles, it's pretty rad. One base to an infantry company. Oh, and there are rules for trains with guns.
>>
>>54129666
One of the fun things about the 1914 campaign is having whole companies of cyclists zooming about. How about being an absolute legend and scanning it for us, anon?
>>
Is it easy to play Song of Drums and Shakos without movement trays?

I'm not really a fan of them, the whole point of skirmish games for me is too get away from that crap.
>>
>>54130216

Sorry I meant Sharp Practice.

I'm looking at a few Napoleonic skirmish games.
>>
>>54128525
That's about all I've found worth looking at.
Moonraker/EM4 also carries a tiny selection of Samurai and a ninja.
West Wind does some earlier Samurai (think the Mongol invasion), and if you can stomach 25mm next to your 28mms, Black Hat has got a nice little range.
I've seen some guy online who built a big bandit buntai for Ronin from them
>>
>>54130584
I like the West Wind fantasy type stuff. Admittedly my request isn't entirely /hwg/ because this is for Kings of War, so I'm open to any fantasy suggestions as well. I just figured /hwg/ was the best place to go to avoid weeb tier samurai. I'm looking for Kurosawa type stuff.
>>
>>54130633
Kurosawa is an incredibly vague label - are we talking about Ran/Throne of Blood style with full armies and armor? How about Seven Samurai/Yojimbo?

Or perhaps you're trying to run a Madadayo style army?

If you don't need it to be perfectly accurate, have you looked at Zenit's Kensei line? They're beautiful, if a bit expensive.
>>
>>54130772
I'm talking around the lines of Kagemusha/Yojimbo. Sengoku Jidai type humans with a dash of mythology and fantasy tossed in (large infantry is oni, using a tengu from Reaper as a wizard, etc.)

My big hangup on stuff like Kensei and Bushido is that they're listed as 32mm and I'm worried they might look awkward next to the 28mm stuff.
>>
>>54130854
I can't speak for Bushido, but the Kensei stuff doesn't look out of place next to Perry's or Wargames Factory. Especially not if you base them the same way.
If you google it, there a ton of comparison shots.

But if you're looking for ranks of ashigaru in 28mm, you've missed the golden age now that Warlord is selling the WGF stuff.

Also I still have no idea what you want, but I'm just going to assume that you want something that looks like it could have been on the field around the end of the period, or in an NHK taiga drama.

In which case, bulk up your forces with cheap plastics and use Perry for heroes/cavalry.
Watch out though, the Perry metal Samurai range is getting a bit rough around the edges.
>>
>>54130884
Late Sengoku period (As in pre-Nagashino, but during the Nanban Trades) would be the best way to describe what I'm looking for. I'm clogging up the thread with stuff that isn't technically /hwg/ though (and also I'm out of good samurai wallpapers) .

My only real concern with the Warlord stuff is that it takes a lot of work to not look really wooden. Price isn't a huge problem for me given that my FLGS sells the kits for pretty cheap, and Amazon has been a lifesaver for the warband kits. I'll look a bit more into Kensei and Bushido cause I can scrounge for some cheap monster kits out of there.

As for Perry I'll be wary about the stuff I purchase from there. Probably gonna buy some warrior monks and Ikko Ikki with arquebus to get a small skirmisher troop ready for an upcoming game. Thanks for the suggestions.
