Having a cryptek is amazing. It is almost a 100% take, but they have been sold out for so long I havent been able to get one despite trying since late april. In games 500><1000 an overlord and 40 warriors is quite possibly the best cheap loadout. 40 warriors is 480 points then a ghost ark is 170 and the overlord is 101 That comes out to 751. Then you can choose between 5 Lychguard which would bring the total up to 936 which would leave you extra points for res orb and Phylactery for your overlord clocking out to a total of 986. As an afterthought you would have to buy the weapon for the overlord which is either 18 for Staff of Light or 11 for Warscythe(Which I take almost exclusively on my HQ's)

OR

You can take the 751 total of 40 warriors an overlord and a ghost ark. Then add a Triarch Stalker before weapons brings it to 868, Then the choices of weapons are Heat Ray, which can work like a lance or a flamer and is very strong regardless for 54 points, a Particle Shredder for 41 points which has a lot of hits, or the Twin heavy gauss cannon which is a flat 36 inch range S9 weapon for 64.

If you take the heat ray or the THGC, you can choose to take a few bases of Scarabs or Overlord upgrades.

I saw it in both threads, but thanks. If having a Cryptek is that important I could probably just ask the person I'm playing if it's okay to substitute the Overlord (Or any other HQ, I guess) model with a Cryptek, most people at my local GW are fine with that as long as it's just a few models, especially since it will probably be hard to buy a real Cryptek for a while.
I'll Probably do the 14 Warrior/5 Guard you were mentioning for mt beginning 500 point list and then add more stuff to it later, probably a stalker and more Warriors, then see what I need from there.

Game plan is pretty simple.

Company commander, one Enginseer, and all the heavy weapon teams climb aboard the Stormlord to form a party bus flinging 54d6 shots per turn.

The five Eversor Assassins form the power rangers and gank characters.

The second Enginseer walks up in between Pask and the Demolisher, fixing as they go.

Plain Leman Russ, Manticore, and Master of Ordnance hang back and provide fire support.

Everything wounding on 6's allows for MCs/tanks/heavies to be far more balanced, compared to 7e where taking a large amount of any of those was a binary "does my opponent have enough anti-armor?". If your opponent brought enough, you were screwed, if they didn't, they were screwed. Everything wounding on 6's means that heavy armor places out more evenly across the board, as opposed to being a binary. It's still woefully inefficient to kill them with weapons designed to mow down infantry, but such is effective enough as to not be wholly wasted, which is the goal.

50 conscipts plus commissar plus Platoon commander is 200 pts.
Since they have the commander, they can do FRFSRF and get 200 lasgun shots at 12''. So if we do some mathhammer, thats 3.7 wounds a turn. So it takes 4 turns for the 50 conscripts to kill an equivalent amount of points in armour IF they are in 12 '' range and IF they are completely unmolested by ranged fire or close combat.

That's not always the case, but whatever, you're generalizing so fine.

Sorry, that was too general a statement. Ballparking, stuff that's intended as AT will be around 25 points/wound/turn, while buffed conscripts are around 50. Mileage will vary, though.

I agree that it's the combination of moderate danger with annoying staying-power which renders the conscripts in particular dangerous. I do, however, think this is more an issue with the conscripts as a unit, as opposed to the everybody-wounds-on-6's rule. An idea I've seen thrown around here is that perhaps conscripts should not be allowed to receive orders. That would pretty firmly put conscripts in the meatshield category, greatly limiting their potential firepower, and give regular guardsman platoons a leg up.

If you're wounding on 6s with no AP and no damage, you're going to have a fucking terrible time doing anything to vehicles. I had a game against Orks the other day where I brought a Land Raider Crusader, and the ENTIRETY of a boy blob got to charge my land raider, only to take exactly 4 wounds off of it. I then turned around and wiped out that boy blob with hellblasters and terminators, because he wasted his time charging a land raider with something that can only wound it on 6s..
