Most illusions take them using an action and making an INT check to see through m8.
>>
>>53989018
too much sceming, little to no disguise trickery. I make my villains robust and forthcoming about what they plan to do, they put years of work into their plans and often see them come to fruition before my PCs even start the campaign. It is just my players, or my ability to push for importance, but when I have a "ticking timebomb" more often then not my players don't take it as seriously as they should. but when theyre thrust into a world where they can't immediately get what they want, they take action. I sprinkle in their desires throughout the campaign, but whoever wants whatever it is they want at the time the most, that's what the BBEG is keeping from them. so the always have a reason to keep fighting until the end.

How do people find CoS? Some seem to dislike the changes to canon and changes to Strahd's motivation in becoming a vampire.
A major dislike seems to be the entities in the Amber Temple.
>>
>>53989165
Depends on the situation, knowledge about you and etc. One could even say their action to detect it is them trying to attack or get past it, before realising that something isn't quite right.

You're not wrong though, any DM who has Goblins checking if the pit trap in front of them is fake is playing it a bit retarded.

>>53989171
Anyone not playing their Druid with rainbows and bestiality is doing it wrong.
>>
>>53989199
It's the best official 5e adventure out right now. I don't care about any changes to canon--Strahd is presented well, and the Amber Temple and its dark vestiges are cool as fuck.

Accidentally left this in the last thread. What's the best race for a swarthy galley cook Tempest cleric in a nautical-themed adventure?

Hill Dwarf seems to have the best mechanical benefits.
Variant Human lets me take Gourmand for the literal and metaphorical flavor.
Half-Orc lets me wreck people with my big stormy warhammer.
I feel like a nautical campaign could always use at least one Triton.
>>
>>53989136
I like to break the tradition of having the GM alone at the far end of table.
Rather having him at the wide side opposity two players and flaked by the others means better eye GM/Player contact and less player/facing player.

It works way better for us at least though at cost of some GM exclusive table space
>>

>Personally, I'd have either gotten incriminating evidence, or I've gotten her to confess, or I'd have manhandled her out of the way and checked for myself, before going on about it.

What did they do? If they just charged in and smited, that's more of a murderhobo problem than just a metagame problem - the guess was fine, the problem was then stabbing someone to death over a hunch rather than looking for proof. But that's the key word: PROOF that your guess was right, rather than wandering aimlessly until a clue is handed to you that means you're now allowed to make the guess that you'd already made but weren't allowed to say. I'd have wanted them to look for evidence or otherwise force her to reveal herself, too, but it would be futile to try to force them to investigate while pretending not to even know what their hunch was.

It's also a good idea generally to train your players into letting you know their intents and expectations so you can tailor the game with them, rather than hiding their true beliefs behind a veil of faux "in character" excuses ("It's not that I think she's a Hag trying to drug us, because I'm not allowed to know Hags exist yet, I'm just not hungry right now!") in order to evade mind control.
>>
>>53989022
Well, true

If it's a case where the players aren't playing to character and justifying things, then sure

Low everything limits what you can SUCCEED at doing. You can't lift a boulder with 6 STR, but you're certainly allowed to try to lift it. Nothing limits what you can attempt to do; the player's control of his character is inviolate.
>>
>>53989411
>can't investigate for hidden doors, important items

Int is important, it's just DMs don't utilize it.

What are the limitations of Creation? Can I create a lion of diamonds or It has to be a real object?
>>

The thing is that the only people who are going to be meaningfully adept at INT related skills are wizards and those that took Expertise.

Eating a relative -2 there for skills it's all well and good when it can be put to better use in stats that are used much more often, like in every single combat turn.

Is there anyway to make unarmed ok outside of monk? The only thing I can think of is having the DM give you something like knuckledusters, just so you can cast booming blade on your fist

Nope. Even monks shouldn't be relying purely on unarmed for most of their career, as their damage is shit until 11th level. It's better to use a weapon. The unarmed strike is there for an extra d6 as a bonus action and class features

>>53989725
Moon druid works no matter what stats you have, though your stats aren't entirely fucked, though any single-stat class could work I suppose. Though only +2 wis you can get is variant human if I recall right.

If you want to be powerful, I'd go mo on druid.

Otherwise, bard or warlock should be fine. Even paladin might be fine, honestly, since paladins have at least a bit of use for every stat except int.

Hello /tg/, I just discovered the great astranauta github and I'm getting up to date with all the new class path/archetypes since I haven't run a 5e campaign in a year.
My question may seem retarded, but when did all the class mechanics get so combat-focused?
I'm sure I remember the rogue having an entire archetype based around city stealth and identity theft and loving the background module from the character creation, but every single new bard/druid/cleric archetype I've read so far only has combat-related features, even the college of fucking whispers...

This is making me sad, I know a lot of people are going to say that D&D is a wargame as its core, but I thought that 5e was all about getting the best of every version, including the out of combat stuff from AD&D.
>>
>>53990582
Assuming the Mystic took telepathy discipline.

They don't actually need to giben how they get basic Telepathy as a class feature
>>
>>53990564
I had a Fiend Warlock whose backstory was that his great great grandfather made the pact with the condition that it would continue unto the seventh generation of his children, and his father knocked up some waitress leaving him to be raised at a monastery.

He turns 16, the terms of the pact come due and an imp shows up to give him his fiendish birthright. So he was an acolyte of St. Cuthbert, all around pleasant guy who just so happened to have an demon powers. It was fun because the DM would have the imp constantly try to offer me more power in exchange for doing evil deeds but technically the Archfiend couldn't break the contract so I used his power to do good.
>>
Should I take gwm and PAM on my paladin or do I only need PAM? Also should I go with gwf or protection style?

>>53989466
At my local weekly game I play a straight bear totem barbarian and my friend plays a druid 2/barbarian 4 in order to rage then bear. Its pretty fuckin rad yo! If you're going druid/barb, start with druid and invest more in mental stats as when you wildshape you take on the physical stats of the creature you wild shape into.
>>
>>53990671
The discipline is rather strong even without abusing Occluded Mind, as it gives Hold Person and Dominate Person.
>>
>>53990761
Personally, as sole spellcaster... I got a lot more urgent shit to grab first. There's not even a healer.

There goes my offensive character concept...
>>
>>53990787
Look pal, sometimes you gotta let the herd thin itself. If nobody else is playing a caster just accept their deaths and they can roll new, more team oriented characters afterwards.
>>
>>53990787
Grab Psi Restore and you're an effective healer, grab Psi Assault and you're an effective attacker, fill out the rest with stuff that fits your character concept.

People bitch about mystic being too versatile but thats ehy I love it, means I can make what I want without having to worry about group synergy too much.

Party composition

Another question
Can this party take on just 5 wights without outside help?
>>
>>53991124
You've got a Cleric and a Paladin (I assume the priest is some kind of Cleric), that should be a cakewalk. Turn undead will destroy that encounter. If even two of the Wight fail their check the fight might as well be over.

Making a Warlock based on the Pact of the Star from 4e (I think). What sort of stuff should I change for flavor? I plan to see if I can change most elemental damage to cold (based off Hunger of Hadar and the cold of space), and my character will take the the Invocation that makes her not able to sleep and she'll basically be spending her nights staring at the stars and praying to her elder evil gods. I should probably incorporate acid damage too but I think that's a bit too powerful? I don't really know. Should I make Eldritch Blast deal cold?

I didn't think I'd need to clarify, I just meant I'm using GOO and flavoring it to be my Warlock drawing power from the elder evil stars. That's all. Short Rest AoE save or suck is good, even if it's situational. I'm happy they made Arcana Cleric's a single target turn or it would've been impossible to make them fight anything other then people and monsters.

So I know some anti-magic spells work on Psionics, but which ones is it?

All of them work, if you can notice therm casting without components.

I've been looking for artwork that can give the group I DM for an idea as to their appearance plus for making tokens with since we play on roll20. I just refluffed the names and descriptions of a couple of cantrips (pic related) for my GOO warlock today, focused on the "hunger" aspect of Hadar. Thorn Whip gave me the most trouble - there's already an invocation called "Grasp of Hadar."

Anyway, the cantrips themselves are unchanged. Anons, suggest better names for these refluffed cantrips.

Not entirely correct.
> There is one important exception to this rule. A psionic effect that reproduces a spell is treated as magic. A psionic effect reproduces a spell when it allows a psionic creature or character to cast a spell. In this case, psionic energy taps into magic and manipulates it to cast the spell...These spells can be countered with dispel magic and similar effects.

Gold and for fun.

I'm not killing him, just reducing him to 0hp for a free-for-all arena fight the city holds. Only rules are no spells or buffs activated before it begins and no bringing in an assistant or pet.

None of the disciplines in Mystic v3 let you cast spells. Even the ones that create similar effects don't have you cast the spell, just produce a similar effect.
>>
>>53989481

"Viable" is an iffy word because it can mean a lot of things. You're basically always going to be absolutely terrible at damage. However with two free hands you'd be well suited to a grappling-heavy build that focuses on nearly 100% crowd control and leaves the damage to others.

Like a lot of gimmick builds, though, you're going to need everyone in the party's buy-in to help you get your grapples going and position themselves to capitalize on them. Failing that, or assuming DPS is more needed than CC, it's going to drastically under-perform.

I am so done right now. I DM'd tonight for my group's 5th session and they have given me the hardest time. I had them go through a mine and eventually fight a cave Fisher (level 2, 3 of them) and they have not even tried; a month in, they haven't bothered to learn their abilities like sneak attack or using ki, not even knowing how to roll damage (it's literally written on their sheets) and having me tell them how to roll. When they're not knowing how to play, the one who watches CR keeps overanalyzing every drawer and stonework, having too repeat over and over again "nothing picques your interest" or "seems normal". What caused me to completely give up and end the session right after they leave the cave was when the CR fan (a ranger) found his future animal companion under rubble and cleared it out. When he entered the room I described the animal and a work bench, the only two things in the room. Mr.Overanalysis completely ignored the obvious workbench with key items and started leaving the cave. I literally said " you leave the room after seeing the working and the animal?" twice, then giving up and telling him he should check the workbench. After I close the session in disappointment in them and I telling him what to do or if agitation, I ask him why he didn't check the wb first; he tells me it's my fault for not putting it it more obviously (even though I did) and told me Matt Mercer would've made it more obvious. I swear I was so close to having his character spontaneously door of arrogance and stupidity. Should I even make a game for ungrateful and lazy players who don't seem to try? I'm so used right now, I put so much work into this while they complain and don't try. Im so agitated

Drow Shadow Sorcerer level 7. I know he can probably see through my Darkness spells.

My spells are Polymorph, Conjure Lesser Demon, Haste, Shield, Blindness/Deafness, Magic Missile, Fireball and Counterspell. I can cast Darkness for 1SP and summon a Hound of Ill Omen for 3SP. Have 16 CHA and the Drow Magic feat from the UA.

The fight's in the late afternoon so my Sunlight Sensitivity won't matter much.

>>
>>53992056
They're designed completely differently. A warlock basically is a ranged martial disguised as a caster. With a single invocation, you can get up to 4 1d10 + cha modifier force damage beams, and you can grab additional invocations to do things like slow down whatever you hit by 10 feet, pulling it towards you, increase its range to 300 feet, or firing a fireball alongside an EB.

Unlike the other casters, the warlock has the Pact Magic feature, which makes all its slots the same level (up to 5th, and after that you get a different feature for casting a 1/long rest spell of the appropriate level) and recovers on a short rest, in exchange for having a pitiful amount of them. Although at max level you TECHNICALLY have more 5th level slots than anyone else, since they're literally the only ones you get.

Depending on your party composition and play style either Dueling, Defense, or Protection.

If it's worth your time to babysit a high-value teammate, Protection. Defense is okay under almost all circumstances, but it's particularly good on flex-tanks. Remember, there's no "aggro" in 5e so it's not enough to be able to take a hit, you have to hit back hard enough to keep their attention.

If you're after DPR or you want to make *sure* they're focused on you, Dueling.

Out of character or in character?

OOC use the explanation in your post

In-character, just make your character be a gruff asshole who looks at their wounds and tells them to rub some dirt in it and stop whining, your magic has better uses.
>>
>>53992656
Your character may not have a concept of "spell slots" but he knows that he can't cast spells without limit. He can tell them straight that he thinks its better to save his magic for more important and dangerous encounters, since you still expect confrontation. Unless you're a naive waif of a druid who thinks that everyone should always be healthy, any healer of any kind should understand the basic concept of triage and limited resources.

I think it's intended to mean any water that's just sitting there, from a puddle to an ocean, as opposed to water in a container or attempting to bloodbend.

RAW it's a bit of a mess, though. I'm not sure "freestanding" is actually a word that's usually applied to water. "Standing" water is a term used, but it's used to mean water with no current which A) basically makes the spell useless and B) is directly contradicted by the section "Redirect Flow" which *requires* flowing water, which is the opposite of "standing."

My read on it is that they meant "no blood bending/dehydration damage" and picked an unclear term for it.

Well, it seems like the intention of the spell is to be able to move vehicles since the "Flood" section specifically calls out "huge or smaller" vehicles, their trajectory, and their chance or capsizing.

"Part Water" doesn't specify vehicles, but it also doesn't simply blink the water out of existence. As a DM I would rule that based on the line "You cause water in the area to move apart" that any vehicles floating on top of the water would move with it.

>they move on to the cave where the Green Goblin Gang is hiding, and hear music coming from it, suggesting Fats must be inside
>the only thing inside is an room empty except for several dead goblins, but the music's gotten louder
>the gang fucks up their search for hidden doors so bad that the music stops and SOMEONE starts approaching the room from behind the wall
>a voice on the other side of the wall tells them to "go away" and that they're "enjoying a private concert"

not too familiar with Vampires in 5e or even previous editions, but i'm learning.

are they likely to ally themselves with other Lycanthropes? if so, they'd probably be the upmost echelon of the that sort of arrangement, eh?

haven't read and am not running CoS, but that may be a good supplement just for raw information on vamps.

>oath of redemption paladin with polearm master, wielding a quarterstave in both hands

Imagining an old human man with a walking staff running about wearing only robes and having an AC of like 18 naked

Wondering how the charm thing actually works out in actual play. Is sparing everyone I take down (which will be a lot, will be a major damage dealer in this group) just going to be annoying for everyone else?
>>
>>53995420
uh, its all listed for you already.

>While the raven is perched on your shoulder, you gain darkvision with a range of 30 feet and a bonus to your passive Perception score and to Perception checks. The bonus equals your Charisma modifier. While perched on your shoulder, the raven can’t be targeted by any attack or other harmful effect

>You can see through the raven’s eyes and hear what it hears while it is within 100 feet of you. In combat, you roll initiative for the raven and control how it acts. If it is slain by a creature, you gain advantage on all attack rolls against the killer for the next 24 hours.

its just treated as a raven familiar otherwise. so in combat, its got the Raven stat block.

Specifically as a raven familiar it can give advantage to an ally of your choosing with the aid another action.

Gotta say I hate the redemptioniat Paladin.

Base AC 16 just... doesn't make sense, and although the concept could work with the rare group I don't see it being a good one for the vast majority.

I guess it's just one more option but the whole thing seems off to me.

What's the point of stripping armour if you get free improved heavy armour anyway?

It can imagine how irritating this will be for some folks to play with "no no we have to save it" "what are you doing!? I charmed that one, you can't kill it!"

I think I like the concept but not the execution?

playing rifts recently and I'm beginning to appreciate how much more fun I have after a harrowing encounter than a game where you have multiple safety nets.

Bitch whine moan get off my lawn etcetera.

So I asked in a previous thread about some "unique" race that my PC could have had a drunken fling with in his past for flavour.
My character is from "generic medieval Europe fantasy land" called Irillshire, which is a name based sort of on Ireland
Whereas the rest of the party is from the main continent which is more of a high fantasy land
Therefore I have decided to have fucked a Faun so that people can call my character a goat fucker because it would be hilarious

>>53995542
This party is going to be 5/6 Lawful or good characters who are all playing their personal goal/alignments and mostly RPing, so sparing people will be mostly mutual besides for the borderline CN fighter

The oath doesn't say "don't kill", it's "kill what has to be killed" so for stuff like fiends undead etc you can totally kill'em nbd

Playing in an AL game and just levelled up to 5, now that I got Extra Attack from Ranger I'm going to just level in Rogue from here out, what do you guys think? Thief or Mastermind?
Thief I got synergy with Fast Hands and Goodberry but Mastermind's bonus action help attack from 30ft away is really nice with my Archery fighting style. Sucks that a lot of the more roleplay abilities aren't as useful in AL modules but I don't see another time where I'd consider Mastermind.

What's the least interesting class for fluff and why is it Paladin?
>>
Our main campaign just ended, and the "new" one fizzled, so were starting a slightly less serious round-table DM game.

I am edgelord aquaman, oathbreaker triton who said fuck the ocean, pollution is great and has no effect on the environment.

Paladins have great fluff, but in 5e they are diminished somewhat since they no longer have to be LG/devoted to a god.

But I like the flexibility the class now has, even if my Paladin is LG redemption and devoted to Ilmater
>>
>>53995800
Had* great fluff

I think there is still much more boring classes fluffwise in 5e. Monks, druids, warlocks have the potential to be cool but have no real interaction/responsibility to their patrons by RAW and are so hamstrung by Pact Magic that they feel lame as fuck
>>
>when your country's gay ass timezone makes all Roll20 games be on about at 4 am

Fuuuuuuck I don't want to do this tomorrow but I already missed last session, and I know it sucks when people do that more then once.

>>53995754
Paladins are pretty boring because the people playing them suck. No one likes dealing with edge lords, Half-Orc Paladins or anyone who explains their character with the word "Redemption" anywhere.

People like >>53995800 are the good Paladins. Something about the classic holy knight feel is just nice nowadays.

I also don't get why people have such hatred for Druid fluff. The Druid circles are pretty cool and can be a lot of interesting things. Best one I saw was a bunch of Sea Druids who were all the Nobles in one huge port city. That was a cool one.

Ranger's got nothing, I like the idea behind the class but the fluff's literally nothing.
>>
>>53995892
Ranger PHB is just nothing all together. Should have just been a fighter archetype or a Barb archetype or something

I want a Barb hunter path or something, like a barbarian who specifically hunts down big game to provide for his tribe, like a mammoth hunter
>>
>>53995924
I can see the place it should fill, but yeah the PHB version not only has no fluff but also has no mechanics.

I feel like changing Favored Enemy to basically a free unlimited Hunter's Mark you can place on enemies would've been cool.

Supposing I'm going Valor bard, which multiclassing option with paladin would be preffered

14 bard + 6 paladin
16 bard + 4 paladin
>>
>>53995941
18 Bard/2 Paladin.
>>
>>53995952
for magical secrets, right?

thing is for roleplaying reasons I would like to reach at least level 3 paladins. Optimization is not really the biggest concern
>>
>>53995975
6 Paladin/ 14 bard is probably the best then. Get your second attack so you can smite things, and pick up the aura for cha to saves. You only get 4 ASI's, but you can make do.
>>
>>53995975
Then 3 Paladin/17 Bard.

My main reasoning was that the two most importent features are Smite and Extra Attack. Smite's level 2 Bard then both Paladin and Valour Bard give it to you and it doesn't stack. So you shouldn't have a level spread that will give it to you twice or you're wasting that level.

I'd do Paladin 2/Bard 6/Paladin 1/Bard X.

>>53996508
Pretty much every oath can potentially be played evil.
>>
>>53996636
not impossible because of the ambiguity of good and evil, but extremely difficult in cases like the oath of devotion

however I would argue that with some oaths it is prohibitive to be chaotic, more precisely chaotic evil
>>
>>53996676
Well, yes. Evil can potentially just mean 'selfish' and given there's no alignment restriction they could take the oath just for power even though they do abide by the oath, but when something isn't within realms of the oath they might go and do the evil thing.

Devotion and ancients are a bit hard to skew towards evil though you could get away with it on vengeance which essentially works out as 'really hate something'
>>
If I'm starting as a 5th level wizard how many spells would my character have learned along his journey?
Is there a default apart from minimum for that level which is 14 (I think).
>>
>>53996699
oath of vengeance was definitely what I had in mind for some kind of chaotic evil paladin whose sole focus was to completely exterminate his enemies with no compassion or care, a madman akin to Goblin slayer for goblins.

Its a bit more complicated however. In my group we value roleplaying very high, even more than effectiveness (without getting stupid, of course). I was playing a chaotic evil bard who was a coward, treacherous, lying, overconfident, alcoholic, and basically a saturday morning cartoon villain made of slav memes whose saving graces are being inexplicably competent and a very funny accent impression.
After some shenanigans he has been forced to be enrolled in a paladin order and thus gain some paladin levels, so I was thinking what oath would the character follow without having to change the character much

Oath of Ancients is the only one that made remotely sense as a "remove kebab/kobold/[undead]" thing, but perhaps now that I know oath of treachery that seems more fitting

sorry for the unwarranted blog post
>>
Give me some good rumours to sprinkle into my sessions /5eg/
>>
>>53996812
Honestly if it's a proper paladin order he should take a proper oath even if he doesn't want to follow the oath properly

While most paladins get some of their power from their devout belief of that, the character kinda gains their power from some sort of bardic bullshitting and half-baked devotion. I mean, they're still not a full paladin at that point.
>>
>>53996817
tell me setting very quickly
>>
>>53996830
>if it's a proper paladin order
actually now that you mention it isn't a proper paladin order

Its more like an alliance of paladins that have formed to go war against lizardmen invaders. They do mass recruitment of capable people and teach the soldiers paladin bullshit instead of regular fighter bullshit because [I don't remember the exact details], so basically there are dozens of orders following different oaths, so there is room to choose from

However I also like your simple explanation of "the character might have learned paladin powers, but he uses them through bardic bullshit" if that's what you meant

You get better at drawing maps or play a game style that doesn't have tactical or dangerous or relevant or intelligent combat.

No matter what, you either have to make sure everybody knows the exact distances between enemies and obstacles and such or you have to use arbitrary decisionmaking.

5e's combat isn't really very exciting unless you can spice up the battlefield, and that works best with a map.

I am playing Arcana Cleric and other players are bitching about the lack of healing, other than Healing Word when one is down. I also cast Bless a lot and Aid. Is there more i can do for my group, or are they ungrateful bitches?
