Do any of you lads ever like to explore alternate shadowrun worlds where early space industry and colonization is a thing?

This series has got me thinking.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgxkilF5XUM

It wouldn't have to be taking place in space but I imagine the population pressure on earth decreasing and corps fighting eachother over space industries could justify implementing various changes in setting if you want to stay earthbound.
>>
So i am a making a bear healing/ utility(maybe summoning?)shaman. What should i not miss out on? Skills, gear, spells?
>>
>>53831524
It's already happening in actual Shadowrun world. There are colonies on Luna and Mars, and yes, megacorps are doing shady shit up there, too. You could easily blend something like The Expanse's setup of the solar system with Shadowrun, there's just be a lot more big players involved.
>>
>>53831524
Yes, as my first shadowruning experience.
Standart ex-millitary mercenaries with their own ship. Crew was a guy who spoke about two sentences per session, nice player as our face, a guy who played a loli elf on drugs that would not shut up how funny his char is and how funny is a loli with a chainsaw, finaly as first time rigger.
Was fun exploring the space until it went from magic doesnt exist to you all get awakened. My 1 essence rigger was shafted while the loli elf got obnoxious to whole new level.
>>
>>53831664

I hadn't really thought about magic off of earth in shadowrun and how magic may be different in space.
>>
Why are aliases so fuckin hard come up with.
I blame the fact that its not supposed to be something cool you pick yourself.
>>
>>53832736
Good news: You don't have to. Space is a mana void, you can't magic up there.
>>

Would Santa Clause exist in Shadowrun?

I don't mean as a literal magic person (but this could happen), I'm thinking more like a powerful free spirit. Could it work? Is there any fluff on this?
>>
>>53832776
I like using abstracts, like I have a decker whose alias is "Umbrala" because he's a sneaker, a stealther, and a Sleaze hacker and his persona and icons are shadows, but it's spoken like "umbrella", a canopy that protects from inclement weather and provides shade. Describe your character and maybe we can come up with something.
>>
>>53832802
Space itself is, but what about planetary colonies or constructs like space stations where life actually exists?
>>
>>53833039
I don't think their current populations are large enough to actually support much in the way of a manasphere. Earth is covered in life, and you cast magic as normal, so imagine the background penalties you'd get slapped with for being on a space station of 500 people and their attendant bacteria.
>>
>>53833057
Fair point, though the station hydroponics would also get a vote. I guess the population would have to boom to eventually sustain a suitable manasphere, which means either massive colony stations like Gundam, or large-scale planetary colonies like Mars in The Expanse.
>>53833006
That motherfucker optioned out. Now he's Saeder Claus and Essen HQ employees have to sit on Lofwyr's lap and plead their cases why they belong on the Nice list.
>>
>>53833079
Unless they make a story about the Mary sue clown going to space, magic won't be cast there.
>>
>>53833150
>CGL
>paying any attention to space
How can they push Awakened supremacy up there?
>>
>>53833057
I would think you would need as much people as would be needed for Heart of the City spirit to raise. Alongside actual ecosystem with all its flora and fauna to be self sustainable. Once the circle of life is set the mana sphere should follow.
>>
>>53833027

46 year old elf that can and mostly does pass as a 20-something human, Both very intelligent and charismatic, sense of fashion, not socially retarded blah blah normal face stuff. She dabbles in the decker side of things as a side effect of her addiction to media and plays Arcadium Online in her spare time like a big nerd. She's borderline useless in combat and is a pacifist to some extent because blood is gross and should stay inside of people. She isn't apposed to using her modified burstfire taser to lay a scumbag out though.

She spent her early life being a boring book nerd, teen years partying to the fullest to experience the world she was missing, and early adulthood with a figurative hangover as a result while deciding maybe not so much world would be fine and settled down to a nice calm life of Shadowrunning.

Some years later shes renting an nice place with two of the other runners on the team, Because of all her various 'escapades' random people just sort of show up in the house, Usually passed out, drunk, on drugs, or any combination thereof.

Are these typically welcomed people? Like, does she kick them out, or does she offer them sanctuary?
>>
>>53833311
>is a pacifist to some extent because blood is gross and should stay inside of people. She isn't apposed to using her modified burstfire taser to lay a scumbag out though.

I've seen this come up a few times in character descriptions and stories and I'm a bit mystified as to how it works out.
>>
>>53832776
Think about what makes your character.
Their quirks, appearance, skills, gear, etc.
Got it?
Now try to insult them using that
>>
>>53834036
Can't speak for them, but I suppose a thought process of "killing them is bad, crippling them is bad, but temporarily, non-lethally putting them out of the fight is OK"
So anything that goes away after they leave is ok, anything that leads to permanent scars/death is bad
>>
>>53833006
>I'm thinking more like a powerful free spirit. Could it work?
Literally anything and everything can exist within a deep plane somewhere, and it only takes the right astral tide before they're here in the physical world.
>>
>>53832776
Here's every 'Runner's dark secret: they absolutely picked their own alias because they thought it was cool and are completely lying about it being a given nickname.
>>
>>53834036
It's a limit, to be sure, but it's not game breaking unless you go full Pacifist II (no violent action, ever, even if you're getting shot and your mother is being raped)
I've got a character in my game that has pacifist, and in our last session it kinda bit the party in the ass because she was with one other party member and they had to knock out two guards, but she couldn't bring herself to start the fight due to the guards being unaware and non-hostile. Which lead to an alarm being raised, but it all worked out when the infiltrator street sam hijacked an APC.

I got a question about Suppressing Fire.

What gun qualities do I need in order to actually use suppressing fire? Obviously I won't be able to do it with a gun that is Single Shot, or just Semi Auto, but say, the Ares Crusader II. its semi auto and Burst Fire. could that suppress? Or do I HAVE to have something with full auto to do suppression?

How to make an unarmed adept? Is unarmed damage normally (str/2)? Seems really weak compared to weapon options for melee
>>
>>53839417

With some Martial Arts and Adept powers you can easily get up to some +7 to that. At the very least.
>>
>>53839439
What adept power adds to unarmed damage except for critical strike?
>>
>>53835703
On that note, can I suppressing fire with a 12round gun despite not being able to pay 20 rounds?
>>
Is it unheard of for a runner to not really have a nickname just a fake name?
>>
>>53840461
There's a rule for that IIRC. Every couple of rounds short your gun is reduces the width of the cone by a meter, something like that.

Carry a spare Extended Mag?
>>
>>53839439

Ah, actually I assume you're going by 5th edition? In which case no, they shafted unarmed combat completely. Especially considering the increased firearms damage.

>>53840567

I mean it's definately not unheard of, but people will have a harder time remembering that "Dave" instead of "Toe tip toaster" the nimble fire slinging mage.
>>
>>53840567
The line between nickname, fake name and handle is a thin one. Consider Kane, Butch, and Red Anya.

So long as you're not telling everyone your real name, it's fine.
>>
>>53840567
While I get that you mean something like 'John Smith' a runner's Streetname is arguably more of a real name to him than whatever his SIN says. Most end up as runners in the first place cause they can't go back anyway.

Then there are some people that may never have had a 'real' name to go with a SIN anyway.
If you were born in some chip den in the barrens, Scrappy is as good a name as any other, I guess.

Where that may get interesting is for high end runners who can use other fake identities to dupe people into believing that that's who they are.
Say you don't trust your team, but don't want them to know or whatever. Give them a name that looks somewhat plausible if you check it int he Matrix and you may have bought some trust.

I thinks it's pretty much a given that you don't tell your Johnson who you are, just like they are never really a Johnson by birth...So even if you introduce yourself as John Smith, nobody would bat an eye I imagine.
>>
>>53841062
>just like they are never really a Johnson by birth
You've never met a Johnson who really is known as Mr. Johnson?
>>
>>53841149
The point of being a Johnson is they should never be able to tell.
>>
>>53841255
That's awfully unfair for all the actual Johnsons, don't you think?
>>
>>53841276
>2079
>not checking your Cis-Johnson privilege
>>
>>53841149
I once had a Mr. Johnson contact whose initials were M.R. Johnson. Sort of accidentally fell into the role due to an administrative error, some secretary filled his name into the career field during data entry.

His superiors mistook his fear-frozen face for implaccable stoicism during meets. He just wants to retire without getting 'retired' for knowing too much, but instead keeps getting more responsibility.

Once his loyalty got high enough he became a drinking buddy for the team and revealed the truth. We never betrayed his trust.
>>
>>53841635

This is beautiful and i'm stealing it.
>>
>>53839417
>>53840718
If you're wanting an unarmed adept in 5e you're going to either need elemental body and a good magic and soak score, or dip just your toe in bioware for bone density augmentation (rank 4 gets you a bonus 4 damage) and striking calluses, rank 4 in that is another plus two. Depending on GM, hey may allow knucks to count as unarmed, if so, bam, another plus one.
It isn't as easy to be Godhand in 5e, but it's still feasible. They just kind of screwed up beefing gun damage alongside it, since now it's high risk medium reward, for most melee situations.
>>
>>53841909
Bone Density 4 is +3 to your unarmed, the first rating of Bone Density just turns your punches lethal.

He used to be a cop, Knight Errant. He was Firewatch before that; it's where he got all his chrome. Years in service to the company, he thought that was where he belonged.

But when his precinct got shut down for contract violations, he was the only one who didn't end up in the slam. But he wasn't something they wanted to keep around, either, so they handed him a severance package and a UCAS SIN application and sent him on his way.

He never made it to the immigration office. While he was mad that he'd basically flushed 25 years away and the corp tossed him aside like a broken toy, he also realized that for the first time, he didn't have to follow orders. And a guy with his skills and ware could go a long way in the Shadows. Find something safer? Nah. Freedom tastes too good.

made a cyber naga not too long ago. With arms. He was one of the earlier naga, before people realized they were intelligent and he had a data jack forced in him for easier training. He also had the surge give him arms, and that, combined with his lack of magic, screwed him up and made him absolutely hate himself, so he started going heavier and heavier into the cyber due to body dysmorphia.

You can make all kinds of different monstergirls, from vampires to centaurs to oni to dryads. The problem comes from the more non-humanoid ones because the RAW of Liminal Body is, "Some of the more popular options are shown below, but gamemasters are encouraged to develop their own as well."

So if you want to be an arachne or lamia, you need to write up a new Liminal Body for it, which is kosher but there are no guidelines for doing so. The prices for the three different models given vary by 30k, the availability and restricted rating also fluctuates without good reason, as does the amount of Essence it uses. If they took half a page to do a box on Extreme Body Modifications, with a recommendation of something like, "Start with a base cost of 50k, 3.0 Essence, Avail 10, and 40 Capacity, increase price by X increment for each of the following selected (better speed, unusual locomotion, additional weapons/capabilities, etc)" it would be more intuitively flexible.

You don't need to shell out for a Saviour. If you have First Aid, you can use regular medkits and add their rating to your dicepool and limit, which (especially when combined with Second Chance Edge) can lead to a fuckload of boxes recovered. Then the mage slaps on a Heal spell afterwards if there's any lingering issues. Saviour is really only good if someone takes it ahead of time because it automatically triggers as trauma control, or if you absolutely need someone to keep walking while they recover, instead of being patched up and then going. A medkit alone is never going to be as effective as medkit+trained doctor.

The thing is, you don't want to be doing first aid in combat itself because it takes a Complex Action per box healed, so you'll be out there a long-ass time. If you want to do something other than just fire the occasional shot and wait for the bullets to stop flying so you can play doctor, invest in either smoke grenades and some serious strength to pull a downed friend into cover (and make sure they have drag handles on their armour), or in some drones like that moving shield from R5.

So, I've been doing some research, and there are literally no cyberpunk games about actually being a detective and doing detective things other than S.N.A.T.C.H.E.R.
Which leads me to ask- how do I run a detective game? It seems having a party would really throw off the tone.
>>
>>53858470
Well you wouldn't run it in Shadowrun or Cyberpunk 2020 to start. A Party can work for a detective story, smaller one would be better of course but its tone doesn't hinge solely on the lone grizzled private eye.
>>
>>53858470
You wouldn't really need a streetsam unless you want more killing than detecting, but a mage for magic detecting/tracking, an infiltrator for physical evidence, deckers are a given for obvious reasons, and faces are good at interrogating.
>>
>>53858532

>>
>>53858583
Yeah, but if that's all the streetsam is doing your player is either gonna get bored, or start a shootout before the case is cracked. Which'll cause trouble with legit police.

Ok. Except for the minor detail of, "This is complete bullshit head canon."

>LIMINAL BODY
>One of the more recent cyber-mods, the liminal body is an extensive restructuring of the lower abdominal region of the user, often requiring some delicate re-working of digestive systems and waste removal, as well as the loss of genitalia, in exchange for a lower body replacement. The more exotic the modification, the more work needs to be done.
>Some of the more popular options are shown below, but gamemasters are encouraged to develop their own as well.

>Centaur: The one that started it all, the user’s lower half is replaced by a cybernetic steed. Four-legged and swift, but large and heavy. The user’s running speed is doubled, and their ability to drag or carry weight is also doubled. The cyberlegs may each be modifed as normal, but remember to average all four!

>The Wheeled Warrior: A four-wheeled device roughly the size of a wheelchair, the user’s running speed is doubled, but difficult terrain is especially troublesome.

>Tank!: Similar to the Wheeled Warrior, the Tank! design uses treads, rather than wheels, trading speed for maneuverability. The user’s walking speed is unchanged, but any difficult terrain other than mud is a breeze. The treads tend to tear up whatever surface they drive over, however, making the user less than welcome in certain elegant establishments.

There's your four legs, four wheel-legs, and four tank tread legs. For (meta)humans. Get to giving the Naga arms.

In universe, people have an idea through rigorous assensing and decades of test cases. Essence makes sense as a theoretical framework in-universe for measuring damage to the metaphysical self, and can be measured through tools like assensing - you can bet that hermetics get to spend a couple of semesters studying Essence, Essence Loss, and the dynamic interplay of cyberware and holistic integrity, reading great thick books on the subject. It's mentioned somewhere that high-end 'ware clinics have mages on staff for firsthand analysis and reporting.

What type of Chargen.

Are you trying to be a tank? Your skill scores are pretty pitiful.

You have a rating of 3 for long arms, but you don't even own one.

You need Contacts

Prototype Transhuman and In Debt V both scream munchkin. Not saying you couldn't reasonably use them to make a good story, but your sheet does little to reassure us.

You're also missing a whole laundry list of gear. I'll get you started.

If your GM's not an ass about it, Little Hornet+Aztechnology Emissary makes for a great walking around setup.

It's no better than an actual Little Hornet in Hosts, but if you go and outfit the Emissary for Max Firewall, you can make sure that you are going to make most enemies think twice about messing with your stuff.

Granted, this is quite expensive and has its limitations, but as long as you do some playing around with mods and modules, it can give you about the power you'd want out of that kind of expense or more if the GM's straightforward about enemies.
>>
>>53859634
>but this line of logic sounds incredibly retarded
not only does it sound incredibly retarded, it IS incredibly retarded.
SR always had a problem with additional limbs

>why not just get a machine that takes the movement commands you would use to cast
what would that help? By itself casting doesn't require any moves, and AFAIK the mage hands are not hands in the sense that you can feel them as if they were an actual hand.
>The caster can use skills remotely with

>due to problems of fine control. Even simple actions like
>picking up a coin may require an Agility Test, at the game-

I am not actually trying to do any mechanical thing, just saying that's fucking retarded.
>>
>>53859887
>especially since the creatures in question have the ability to do hand-like shit.
Well, first: It's magic. I don't have to explain shit
But secondly: As I see it, you are not actually controlling arms. You are not sending muscle contraction commands, because there are no muscles. Magic fingers is more like controlling two dots that can latch onto things and hold them and turn them and all that shit.
So even if you didn't have arms you'd still be able to think "Go to that. Hold. Turn. Move. Turn. Move. Let Go. Move. ...."
But just these commands would not be enough to actually control the limb.

But again, this is just my understanding of a completely retarded sub-system/explanation. So take this with a salt mine.
>>
>>53842356

>>
>>53859706
Depends on who they're supposed to be. If you want them to be about on the level of your runners, then use what your players used. Otherwise, it doesn't really matter, you just need to be able to have a feel for how powerful they are.
>>
>>53859974
>Those thoughts are literally enough to run a robot arm the same way as the legs you posited.
First: Yeah, preaching to the choir here. Dumb Cyberlimb rules are dumb.
But Secondly: The big problem isn't actually getting a robot arm. Just grab yourself a metal harness, add robot arm or two, Wire them to a datajack. Wa La. Instant Hands.
The big problem is getting CYBERarms. Because those liminal bodies? AFAIS they don't let you feel through them. It's more like sitting in a wheelchair.
Which means that the signals from the brain must be computed and then turned into commands. And of course: No tactile sense.
So yeah. Naga with drone arms? Sure. Naga with cyberarms, which you control like normal arms and which let you feel? Nope.

Cyberlimbs all include touch receptors as a matter of course. Otherwise a good half the population would be walking around with dead metal on them.
>>
>>53859786
But there's no tactile feedback, it's all by eye and instinct. It's like using a remote control arm to pick something up versus actually picking it up. Which is basically where we're at with prosthesis in 2017. Proper cyberlimbs feel and function exactly like the limb they are replacing.

That is true. There wouldn't be much of a game if the characters were all cowards who couldn't handle the extreme lifestyles that come with being a shadowrunner. However it's always been a little immersion-breaking to see characters who were so talented at what they do that they could name their price selling their skills legitimately, yet insist on fragging security guards and two-bit gangers for enough table scraps to make rent with just enough money left over for a real steak and a joyboy/girl to eat it with.
>>
>>53860449
What the heck, chummer? Shadowrunners make mad bank for their skillset. Are you playing with one of those sadist GMs who pays in pennies and lets the mages reign supreme?
>>
>>53860468
well, RAW indicates you should do that. So my bet is, he is.
>>
>>53860532
According to RAW 5.e the average runner must be able to make atleast 15k or so per month if not more, since in debt goes up to that much per month.
>>
>>53860909
Compare that to run payouts RAW, and perhaps the runner is fucked.
>>
>>53860956
Keep in mind you should be looting everything not nailed down and selling it.
But yes, probably.
But its a sign of a bad DM if a runner with in debt isn't able to make ends meet despite going on missions.

>>

The alternative is being unplayable and typically negative isn't supposed to mean unplayable if you strive to deal with it.
Day Job 40 (Another extreme) can give you 5k/mo, so you must be able to atleast make 10k somewhere every month.
What does the book give you per run?

It's notable because a literal child getting his deck from his negligent parents is a funny character detail anon thought worth mentioning.

>>53861353
As a rule, at my table it's a base of 5000; enough for the runners to survive at a middle lifestyle for a month. Throw some multipliers on that and they generally walk away with somewhere in the neighbourhood of 10k gross. Take expenses off that and it leaves them with enough money to live, and some to invest in the future.

They generally do about one run per month (each run taking a week or less to execute) and the rest of the time they're living regular lives. No point in breaking your back in the shadows if you can't go home to the sick child you're making the money for, or spend it with the boys, or whatever. We like getting into the downtime, so it works well for us. The reward is enough that it's clear why people run the shadows, without being so great that everyone does it. If they want more money, they go for more dangerous jobs, or run more of them back to back (which puts more strain on their support network to get new equipment, repair the car, heal up themselves, etc).

Also, one thing I noticed about the CRB's run rewards is that it only tracks base attribute+skill, when the multiplier jumps up another bracket when you factor in the practical bonuses from gear the opposition is getting.

Various Celestial bodies have a non-zero mana level because, although there is no bio-sphere to grant mana from lifeforce, those celestial bodies spent a long time being Worshipped by humans in the past. They are POWERFUL magic symbols, and since background count is basically concentrated emotion, there exist mana fields on planets, stars, and famous comets.

People gave them significance, and they have then "absorbed" some level of latent magic feedback, for hundreds of centuries.

It's a dead rock, or a burning ball of gas, but dang, them planets and stars are magical after all.

No, 10k per head. Often the actual payment is something like 50k, which they split into personal shares after taking group expenses relating to the run (like bribes and buying the fixer a new hat) off the top.

Same calculation as the core book, just beefed up a little to help more nuyen-intensive characters and allow us to have runners who aren't all super-trenchcoat 'crime is my life' types.

Gun adepts are a subset of physical adepts; physads are contrasted with social adepts, the very rare mental adepts, and mystic adepts, not what specific kind of physical activities they do.

And street sams were around long before adepts, and are far more common (by Sixth World statistics, if not proportions of player characters).

As above, you're being really stupid to actually think that ten thousand is anywhere near comparable to a million. Of course, you've yet to actually respond to the fact that the sanctity of the Earthdawn connection is hampered, so I don't expect any proper response from you.
