So 5e, tell me about your alchemists
>>
>>53593726
French triton woman with a mechanical octopus in a bag of holding. Have the potions flavored as underwater plants that lose effectiveness quickly once exposed to the air.
>>
Thoughts on spell points?
>>
>>53593726
Their potions are too strong for you.
>>
>>53593726
I have them as part of a master-craftsman background.

Nature and Arcana proficiency + 1 tool of their choice.

Crafting time is reduced by 1/4 as per UA downtime rules and they need 10GP less materials to make something (It's a small profit DMs should be able to cope with. There's no point to a trade if it doesn't bring profits.).
>>
>>53593873
I think sorcerers should use spell points by default
>>
>>53593683
Which is better- hexblade or vengance paladin?
>>
>>53594086
Better at what?
>>
My OotA players rolled the sent back in time on the Maze Engine.

They just murdered all the drow at the starting prison and are planning on hitting up all the best treasure and murdering everyone who slighted them before finishing Vizerans ritual about a year ahead of schedule
>>
>>53594042
I agree.

How about Warlocks? I've seen a lot of people say that they should use it.
>>
>>53594154
nah i think they just need an extra spell slot to counteract the fact that nobody runs as many short rests as the game suggests.

>>53593726
Mine's a Witcher basically, drinks potions to buff self
>>
>>53594168
I think I agree with this, too. Spell Points are weirder for Warlocks anyway since they're supposed to auto-cast up to 5th level by default.
>>
>>53594138
I don't know, play in general I suppose? So which is more effective in combat, fun to play, etc
>>
>>53594086
Hexblade, most consistent burst if given proper rests. Pally offers more defenses though, easily shored up by a fighter dip for locks though.
>>
>>53594243
>>53594168
>>53594154
Even with an extra slot, which I tried in our game. The Warlock seems to lag behind but our DM generally only runs 2 encounters before a long rest, and they tend to be harsher one to "balance" it. So its expected for the Wizard, or Druid to burn half the spells in a single fight. My Warlock was only able to keep up due to Spell-points. Granted this might be a case specific condition but its my two pence.
>>
>>53594358
That's your DM fucking them more than anything, for a warlock to break even there they'd need 5 spell slots or something.
>>
>>53594262
Is it better to play straight hexblade (with maybe first in fighter for heavy armour) or to multiclass into another cha caster like bard or sorcerer after lvl 5 for more smite slots?
>>
>>53594397
1 fighter dip gets huge bang for your buck and stress the importance of proper rests and you'll be gravy. They are super fun though. 20d8 damage that refreshes every short rest is ridiculous.
>>
>>53594441
Yeah I would definitely go 1 fighter, probably v human and start with gwm or some other feat. Is it worth going past lvl 5 in warlock though? Multiclassing into bard or sorcerer after I pick up extra attack would provide a lot more spell slots for smiting.
>>
>>53594441
>1 fighter dip
>not 2 fighter dip
anon, please.
>>
>>53594397
I think it's worth getting more invocations and the higher + pact weapon buffs.
>>
>>53594503
>>53594441
>>53594262
>dipping
>not multiclassing 4 levels minimum
>>
Is Mystic too good?
Seems extremely overloaded to me.
>>
>>53594503
Extra attack is worth rushing over surge
>>53594497
Lifedrinker is too good to ignore plus mystic arcanum
>>
>>53594554
>Extra attack is worth rushing over surge
no one said you had to take them back to back, take 1 level of fighter, get your extra attack, then take another level of fighter.
>>
>>53594503
2 Fighter dip is not worth it, action surge is overrated imo and it delays extra attack by 2 levels
>>53594515
>>53594554
Yeah warlock is probably better, I will do that then

Are there any UAs / decent homerules expanding melee attack options / stances / hit locations or should I simply not bother with this if I'm feeling severely limited with 5e in this regard and move on to another system?
>>
>>53594358
Does he offer a short rest between the two encounters?

Because seriously, otherwise classes that rely on short rests are getting fucked either way.

Also, 2 encounters per day is a pretty hard way to travel through a dungeon.
>>
>>53594547
If you pick the broken shit, yes. There are enough options to make a non-broken character.
>>
>>53594594
You can add in some of the DMG additional/variant combat options and brew up some more options based on BM maneuvers and there's some Kobold Press thing called I think Beyond Damage Dice but I haven't read it.
>>
>>53594639
>>53594378
So far I do get a short rest between fights, but we really don't do dungeons. Also a lot of non-combat encounters, which almost always leaves the martials who ignored their utility bored.

He has been leading this game for about 3 months. I am trying to weasel my way into do a couple oneshots between major story beats, because I wanna show them a different style of play. If it wasn't impossible to get a group together in this area I would have moved on.
>>
>>53594589
>Not getting extra attack first

For what purpose?
>>
>>53594768
right? he's acting like getting action surge and extra attack are mutually exclusive.
>>
>>53594547
It's ''pick 5 subclasses at once the class''.
>>
>>53594791
>>53594768
Yeah, i suppose it will be worthwhile to take a second level at some point, problem is it is unlikely the character will be played beyond 10th or 15th lvl, as that is when my groups campaigns seem to end
>>
>>53594889
well, seeing as how you can get extra attack and action surge by level 6, i think you'll be okay.
>>
Anyone else watching day 2 of Stream of Annihilation?

>>53594907

>>
>>53594938

>>
>>53594946
But is it worth delaying extra warlock spell slots, eldritch invocations, and pact features? I would probably not take it until after i got the lifedrinker invocation at lvl 13

I'm making a custom Necklace of Prayer Beads. Spells are Compelled duel, Cure wounds (2nd level) / Lesser restoration, Blinding smite, Planar ally. Since I want to make compelled duel actually usable, I'll add this blurb:
>You can choose to forgo concentration on spells cast from the beads, but the spell save DC becomes 13. If you do so after casting the target immediately makes another saving throw.

Does this break anything with compelled duel or blinding smite?

3 archetypes for each (except wizard) is a strange choice too. hopefully they've improved them significantly, and hopefully it includes the revised ranger. i'm not sure how they're going to do, for example, 3 monk archetypes, since drunken fist was so bad.

the dm tools sounds fun but i really wish they'd do some weapons.

>>

Stream of Annihilation, dnd channel on twitch
>>
>>53595329
I assume it's almost all the ones from UA because each class is getting three except the wizard. The hexblade seems to be very popular so I imagine it'll be in there.
>>
>>53595386
They specifically mentioned multiple class archetypes for each class (except only 1 for wizard), downtime, traps, and some other stuff. It's 200 pages of material so expect quite a bit of it.
>>
>>53595386
They said there would be three new options for each existing class. I doubt we'll be getting Mystic or Artificer, though. It's possible, but they already said that they wanted to play test those classes more with DM's Guild.
>>
>>53595332
I'm really liking the standard cover, but I'm probably going to grab the limited edition.

>>53595344
The Stream of Annihilation. You'd have to go into the archived videos to where they announced it. They haven't put out an official press release/article yet. Probably holding off until the stream ends so they can just dump a big article for everything.

Yesterday: Tomb of Annihilation, focuses on Chult and Acerak fucking around with death/ressurection, creating zombie dinosaurs; supposed to be Indiana Jones-style and is supposed to work well enough as just a setting book if you don't care about the adventure; comes out September. Miniatures being put out and an expansion or whatever for the Neverwinter MMO. Also a green metal tin with the Green Devil on it with green dice will be released. D&D Beyond will have Twitch integration where you can roll over a character and see conditions/stats.

Today: Xanathar's Guide to Everything, mostly UA rules, and the higher rated UA subclasses, but includes some extra stuff; written from Xanathar's perspective; releases November.

They feel pretty stiff. Oddly enough when some of them were in different groups seperate from eachother in Day1, they didn't seem like bad players.
I think they aren't doing themselves any favours with forcing it so hard, especially with the costumes in every session.

Awesome. It was definitly the highlight of the show yesterday.
Both because of his DMing and having the best player group.
>>
>>53595872
Any group I've been in has had a system by which you receive bonuses for an actually convincing argument. If your logic is almost airtight then you gain advantage. If it makes very little sense then you get disadvantage. then stat bonuses inbetween.
When I DM, if you don't give an argument, you can't use modifiers on your role

>>53596636
hahahahahaa no way, what did he do that was so bad?
>>
>>53596616
>and tips on how to do this correctly?
By not doing it at all.

That out of the way, I know why this 'sounds' like a good idea, but its really not, because having to handle several players all in seperate locations doing things is a real strain and most importantly takes up a lot of time for something that just isn't that much fun.

I suggest if you want to do something like this, you should make it two groups that are looking for more people and herd them towards eachother where they have reason to cooperate on something. A job offer, a tavern that gets robbed by bandits etc.

Do NOT make them all run around individually and do NOT let them run around freely on their own.
>>
>>53596625
>>53596636
He chose to leave due to personal reasons. He had his good moments.
>>
>>53596616
Personally I have tried that and it just lead to annoying meandering.
>>
>>53596616
Have some event happen that they would be interested in to bring them together
>>
>>53596616
In my experience, it's better to have the characters all know eachother from the beginning, it really easily builds camaraderie between the characters and players, especially if the players aren't friends in real life.

If you insist on them forming an adventuring party, just have there be a big problem that needs dealt with, and then go around the table and have everyone describe what brings them to the adventurers guild where they meet everyone else.
>>
>>53596636
He took a hissy fit at a fan for making Tiberius fan art he didn't like. Told them they were "uncrittered" or something. Basically told them to fuck off and never watch their stuff again. Travis jumped in and told him to shut the fuck up and told the fan to keep making art and that he liked the art. Orion gets the boot before the next episode.
>>
>>53596616
>>53596650
To follow up: if you want the PCs to start out without knowing eac other then just have them be strangers hired on to the same job. They'll still get to do the "getting to know each other" thing but it won't bog down the session.
>>
>>53596616
We always do that, but the thing is it's going to take a while for the party to form, and some player's won't say yes or will take a long while to join because they want to be contrary, and eventually the players will just immediately say yes for the thinnest of reasons just to get the ball rolling

Giant rats break out of the tavern and spill into the streets. I can't agree with that at all.
Its good that they have a variety of players from different experience levels, so they can show mistakes and explain rules to new players that are watching.

>>
>>53596923
>so when mistakes are made, they are typically just glossed over in favor of time
As far as I saw mostly just for less important stuff, simply to save time. Which is also a important thing to show, that letting it slide sometimes for the sake of keeping things smooth is perfectly fine.
>>
>>53596908

>>
>>53596946
>I think they are portraying it as a professional thing with all the voice actors and costumes
I agree that the costumes are definitly overkill on this group.
The voice actors are pretty much just people who play D&D so its not really a criteria for how good you should be at the game.
>>
>>53596949
>>53596925
If they knew how to play and how action economy worked etc they would be able to play a lot faster and more enjoyably, and new players would get a sense of how the game actually works (ie only one action a round)
>>
>>53596992
>and new players would get a sense of how the game actually works (ie only one action a round)
There is no one way how the game "actually" works, which is exactly what all these different groups are showing.
>>
Does Readying an action to take the Attack action allow you the regular extra attacks, or does it say somewhere that it's limited to one?

Thats why you have both beginners and vets. You can see the spectrum, and can also notice pitfalls of a novice.

Travis has said on multiple occasions that the thing he likes the most about CR is the story that Matt's made and how the characters interact with it and shape it for themselves.

And for all their faults, Liam and Marisha were kind of the trail blazers for the inter-party relationship to be "viable" as an option.

To me, the Vex-Percy relationship makes more sense than the Vax-Keyleth one, just due to how those characters have changed and grown over the start of the show to present.

Probably my favorite "Travis approves of this ship" moment is the bathtub scene between Vax and Percy.

By in large, the CR community just says Percy for Taliesin's character, because his full name is a mouthful, and one that Taliesin picked to be more of a joke/challenge for him and Matt to say in full.

If memory serves, Taliesin is from Australia and his family moved to the US when he was like 8 or 9 years old, and still has relatives living in Australia.

>how it plays
At its core, Kensei essentially trades utility for power and defense, but it burns out faster.

Kensei allows you to use a d10 versatile weapon for damage, but that only upgrades from the d8 any monk could use. However, the Kensei's weapons are considered magical where a typical monk only gets unarmed magical attacks. In addition, the kensei can mini-smite (add MA die for 1 ki point), which results in more reliable damage than Flurry of Blows (since you can activate it after you hit), but slightly less raw damage (no dex bonus you'd get with the unarmed hit, but the attack can miss). Alternately, you can mini-nova by using both in one round.

The +2 AC feature allows you to keep your AC competitive until higher levels when your ASIs catch your AC up, but the damage loss isn't too big anyway (only 1d10 -> 1d6 or 8). Then you can stay in melee where you couldn't before.

Sharpen the Blade is quite strong as well. Paladins may get 1d8 damage per hit, which is average 4.5 damage, but they don't get a +3 bonus to hit.

This may or may not be the ultimate monk melee machine people imagine, but it's definitely a more capable martial monk as opposed to an Open Hand controller/skirmisher.

As to ranged weapons; if you want a full-ranged monk, just go Longbow and be done with it; Crossbow Expert wouldn't increase your damage since Heavy Xbow doesn't qualify and you are already using your bonus action for more damage anyway, so you couldn't make use of hand xbows. If you're a melee Kensei, darts are fine. Your MA damage will improve their damage.
>>

It sounds like he's playing the shrine music from Breath of the Wild for a combat encounter.

Then again, he just has an electric piano to work with, not a lot you can get done with that for variety's sake.

I think WotC's plan with all the online UA stuff is that they want it to be playtested by the public before it gets put into a book, because WotC realized they could farm out QA for (mostly) free because of how 5e got designed and balanced prior to it's release.

As we now know, they've been taking the feedback and balancing it more so they can put it out in a book like Xanathar's.

>WotC realized they could farm out QA for (mostly) free because of how 5e got designed and balanced prior to it's release.
They have hundreds of NDA'd private playtesters that test stuff out behind the scenes. The public playtest stuff is mostly to get feedback on what the public responds well to, not necessarily specific mechanical changes.

I just want a cute wood elf with 20 Dex and 8 Strength doing the good ol' elven sword'n'board.

noun
1.
a broad piece of metal or another suitable material, held by straps or a handle attached on one side, used as a protection against blows or missiles.

???

Also I suggested the unfluffed rapier, not pretending it's a longsword.
>>
>>53597830

You do, but it's not especially easy to switch between them at a moment's notice. If you're focusing your efforts on melee, it's better to grab Darts to throw as your weapons so you don't have to sheathe your weapon.

Then again, the problem can go away at level 6 if you pick [versatile d10], darts, and Longbow as your three weapons.

>>53597787
Just be careful because the text says you get to pick a melee weapon and a ranged weapon; the handaxe counts as the former.

Kensei gets the following:

>Longswords and Whips as monk weapons.
>+2 to AC when you spend one of your attacks on your turn on an unarmed strike.
>use your bonus action to add a free 1d4 to all your ranged kensei weapon attacks.
>get an upgraded FOB feature that doesn't require your bonus action.
>SHARPEN THE BLADE a flat +3 to hit and damage rolls

Your best ranged weapons are Longbow and Dart.
Your best melee weapons are Longsword and Whip.

Kensei is the best martial monk.

I hope they follow its example for the other monk archetypes for PHB 2.
