Paizo Games General (Pathfinder & Starfinder) /pgg/ (formerl1y /pfg/)

Custom Bread edition:
How do you guys feel about homebrew rules? What particular ones have you encountered that you have liked or disliked?

Unified /pgg/ link repository: https://pastebin.com/PeD1SMUZ

Current Playtests: https://pastebin.com/quSzkadj

Old Thread: >>53553918
>>
>>53562186
Why bother including starfinder as a main topic of discussion where there's nothing usable about it yet?
>>
>>53562203
There's playtest videos, class and mechanics previews, plus there's lots of room for lore speculation and talking about potential campaign ideas.
>>
>>53562203

I didn't though? The thread question applies to pathfinder obviously...
>>
>>53562186
I've never encounter any homebrew that I liked that I didn't directly create myself. It's not like I haven't tried, either, but most of it either sounds lame or looks broke as fuck.
>>
Dragons 2 greentext?
>>
I want to take the revolutionary setting of Galt and amplify it for Starfinder. Should I just have a whole planet for it in constant revolutionary vs counter revolutionary chaos or cast it as a creeping evil across the Pact Worlds spreading terror and upheaval a la communism?
>>
>>53562203
Because autism and honestly I agree with you, when Starfinder release, I rather that SF have its own general and don't mix with Pathfinder.
>>
>>53562330

Well, we do have the Vast which can have practically anything so some planet that exist in the Vast that has this and then has it's forces spreading it's influences in the Pact Worlds is doable.
>>
>>53562287
It had a crossover with LoBaF

>>53562203
>>53562353
At first I did agree with you, but the more I've thought about it the more I think it provides an injection of new content, new lore, and other new stuff for the general to talk about and pick apart. It's good for discussion, at least until we exhaust the subject.
>>
>>53562353
Why dilute the two paizo lines when the player bases overlap? It's not like we have so much thrilling pathfinder discussion every thread that it'd be drowned out by starfinder. The two can coexist easily.
>>
>>53562391

Not to mention, while the rules for SF are different from PF the two are still linked lore wise so it's not like someone isn't going to find some way to shoehorn PF stuff into SF.

We had a late start so we were only able to play for a couple hours, but briefly it went like this:

>the party minus Rory ends up in some kind of dungeon literally made of ice
>they explore, while Rinka is unlocking a door it turns out to not be a door at all and is an ice elemental
>several more pop up from the ground and surprise the party, Rinka gets hit hard but the party overpowers several elementals
>the remainder retreat into the icy floor, Calsi uses an Unseen Servant to pound the ground and create a distraction
>this works an and another elemental gets destroyed as it pops out of the ground to attack the servant, the last remaining elemental retreats
>following it, they come to a dead end, but actually there's an illusory wall that leads into a room beyond, the floor of which is decorated by a mural
>the mural depicts three white dragons. over time one has turned into a skeleton, one has grafted heads from a multi-headed beast onto itself, and one has sailed away on a ship
>the party quickly deduces these to be Lua, Tiu, and apparently a third youngest sister. Tiu seems to be involved in the illegal Thuvian magic item trade

and that's where we stopped

Serious discussion guys.

Who here has actually played DHB's martials. What are you experience with them? I'm curious but unsure.
>>
I hope spinal-mounted weapons are a thing in Starfinder.
>>
>>53562756
You better hustle or I'm going to post mine first.
>>
>>53562839
They better be.
Any starfighter that can't pack a battleship's main turret guns as a spinal mount has no hope at even intercepting shit.
>>
I want to play a martial in JttW with the theme of 'channeling spirits'. Unfortunately most spirit channelers seem to be casters.

I am mainly thinking of this to make use of the myriad of small gods.

What martials have this theme?
>>
>>53562839
Unless it's for planetary bombardment or extreme long range attack, a spinal mount is ridiculously inefficient.

This gets me to wondering. Hot Starship on starship action is probably not something you'll see a whole lot of in Pact World Space but I would love to see various pirate empires duking it out with their own fighter pilots and mercenaries defending their territory or escorting merchants through literall gang wars in space.
>>
>>53562884

If you're a Starfinder pirate, do you target ships in real space near inhabited systems or in the Drift between known routes?
>>
>>53562949
Ship combat is going to be pretty common considering the Free Captains and Aspis Consortium are a thing, but in the Vast there should be pirate empires and all sorts of junk!

Depends on what sort of outfit I'm running. If I'm aligned with the criminal organizations planet side my thing may be to target rivals and disrupt their business with some targets of oppurtiny on the side. If I don't give a shit what dirt eating planet side mongrels think or want I take their shit.

Well here's the thing; The whole point of fighters - always has been - is that while less efficient budget-wise (miniaturization is a costly bitch) it's still WAY fucking cheaper to put something that can tear a hole through the big capital ship on something small enough to land inside said ship that only needs one or two people to pilot it. No matter how good defenses get, it's always a simple matter to put a few weapons capable of breaking through on something smaller. The weapons (especially in case of missiles) may not be smaller than the ones used by the larger vehicle at all, just that less are carried, and the smaller ship has less other functions which directly makes it cheaper, lower-crew (though more automation costs) and lighter.

Once you can detach certain non-combat-essential systems and handle them someplace else, like a hangar or base, that's when you get 'fighters'. No need for maintenance corridors and a galley, it comes back home for that.

Even with drones and missiles as options this only changes the relative duties of the 'fighter' from "torpedo divebomber" of the old days to "sensor-envelope-extending killer-drone-carrier with some kind of heavy weapon of its own since it's already decently big to begin with"

In the most stable areas, you probably have more corvettes or the like on long patrol routes keeping relative peace, with most forces either elsewhere or on training/standby. However the further out you go, yeah; you'll start seeing

Couldn't tell you about Occultist, but Point-Blank Shot, Rapid Shot, Deadly Aim, Manyshot, and Clustered Shot are pretty standard for archers. Then again, Deadly Aim may be a tough penalty for a 3/4 BAB.
>>
>>53563341
Do you think these people just have a bunch of random phrases? Like, if it was 'Shining Light: A Pathfinder Adventure' would they say 'I am 34 years old and I am a life long gamer. I have always had an interest in Light Themed game'?
>>
>>53563367
This.

BBW is personals ads code for morbidly-grotesque obesity. Where the folds above her breasts smell like bad pussy, and anything below the belt (metaphorically; no belts exist that can cover this distance) would kill an otyugh with but a whiff.

Thicc is already chubby, but BBW sees "thicc" as near-death anorexia.
>>
>>53563425
They would.
It's not random though. Their vocabulary and therefore ability to formulate concepts and trains of thought is just that limited.
>>
>>53563425
I think they're just so thirsty for a game, that they just feign interest in whatever the game is about.

Like editing your resume to include the keywords for a job.

>>

No no, they do it because that's what application culture is outside of /pfg/. As someone who spent a solid year using the LFG for games, DMs typically expect to know a bit about the player as much as the player character - it's so they know what to expect voice and personality wise, you see. Nobody wants to accept an 18 year old busty half-Elf ranger and join the Skype call to hear a deep Southern drawl.

R20 randos don't actually read anything posted about games, they just shotgun applications. This is pretty apparent when they blatantly ignore chargen rules ("I'm using a 40RP half-elephant, half-tree custom race, if that's not cool I can change it to human"), a complete lack of application ("Hi can I still join?"), or occasionally by randomly requesting to play a character which somebody else applied with ("I really feel like I could capture the dark, edgy nature of that character").

Posting here in need of help since Roll20 updated their shit.

How do I get rid of Weapon Notes?

Before I'd simply delete it out the macro.
Now it only shows an ID, and I got no idea what to do with it.
Tried deleting {{weapon notes=weapon notes}} under settings for the attack template, and fucking nothing.

And if you're wondering, stuff is written in Weapon Notes for great convenience, but with a roll it will show it, and no one wants that.

Would really appreciate the help.

>>
Hey, I would like some class recommendations. Fundamentally, I am looking to play a character that focuses on buff/debuff. Doing a lot of damage is not a real priority to me, as other people that I play with typically spec for that. Having another guy dishing out damage won't necessarily be contributing as much as making the damage dealers more accurate, have more actions, be supported (such as bless weapon casting to bypass DR), and reducing enemy action economy or numbers.

I'm really enjoying my bard who has a net, intimidates, and UMDs up the wazoo.

I think that I'll enjoy my alchemist once I get specialized bombs, such as frost bombs and tanglefoot bombs. But the reduced cost from crafting is already super nifty.

Mesmerist is interesting to me.

Can a good buff/debuffer be made with an inquisitor?

Any other good classes for this? I would prefer not to play a character that is min-maxed, and would like to have utility outside of combat, too.

One too many WoD generals years ago was enough for me.

Mainly curious about how people like "evil" games and kingmaker because I ran(read salvaged) what I could to run the drow campaign in throne of night. Which I do not recommend. When I saw what little I was given to work with, I had to convert it to 3.5 and run the game in Forgotten Realms and throw half the plot hooks out because book 3 is a pipe dream.

Burn no longer fucks with Nonlethal damage.

Battle Burn is like a 5e "short-rest" power, you get a small buffer of burn that you can use to pay for wild talents and stuff.

Internal Buffer doesn't have any shenanigans involving refilling it before you go to bed one day. It just starts full.

You also get Expanded Elements 1 level earlier.

I can see plenty of reasons. They may like the power and flexibility of Vancian magic, or they like the high-flying battles that PF with 3pp gives you in addition to heavy narratives. Or they might do it because it's more popular than a lot of the narrative-heavy ones. Or they might like being free to interact and act freely without rolling dice every step along the way. Or maybe they just like Pathfinder for some reason and are okay with finagling it to fit their table, even if it's not what the designers intended (like everyone who use 3pp like PoW does).

Even if, say, GURPS might fit a narrative story better from an outsider's perspective, it doesn't mean all groups who like narrative will choose it.

It's pretty good, but it's still in playtest and has lots of things that need to be ironed out. I'd go take a look at it myself if I were you, though I don't doubt that another anon will be able to find a way to pitch it without that.

The thing that has to be asked, though is: "How do you feel about ALL DAY"?

Better warlock. A bit less on the "Groping Tentacles At Will" and a good deal better solo blasting capability; basically blast (now pulse) shapes are no longer paid for by your invocations (now clauses). While you do have to build it well to do so, it CAN keep up with things like martials while offering decent utility, making it a solid tier 3 class, right where we usually want'em. Perfect for teaming up with that alchemist, the paladin, the gestalt monk-fighter, the psychic warrior and so on and so forth.

Flavorwise it's a huge improvement. Pacts are separated into a wide variety, and it's made clear that the main effect of the patron was basically jumper-cables for your own actual power: this awakens and also frames how the avowed's power will shape itself in the future, but for the most part that's it that's all.

Patrons are as above: They woke your power up, and maybe you can still communicate with them on occasion. It could be that grandpa was a demon, or maybe you met a dragon as a child that decided to give you a little boost, or you piloted an engel or something.

Symbiotic pacts are where what woke you up was actually something more on par with your own level: Basically you got your powers jump-started by that Otyugh, but that same 'link' gave it something in return, and now you've both gone off to maximize your growths as it turns out each gets stronger as the other does up to a point.

There's two main archetypes on the above: Aspirant avowed transform into increasingly-like-the-other-one forms temporarily and gain even greater power as they do so. They also likely pause and have some kind of magic belt appearing from nowhere to do it but let's ignore that for a bit.

Betrothed stick together. A greatly diminished (whether due to what they did for you or vice-versa) entity of that type is now actually physically at your side, though they can hide in you like you were their pokeball. You control both characters

Finally there's Esoteric pacts.

Sometimes you just love your country that much, or after intense practice and devotion to your martial arts finally breakthrough; Time and space no longer matter and you're now jerking off beyond the speed of light. Pacts like Nation and Self have no other entities; believe in you who believes in you is what just fucking happened.

Each pact gives some abilities as well as the class skills and a sense type. Dragon types sniff out treasure, demon types sense what folks desire, Nation pacts immediately know where your true (nationally-speaking) allegiences lie, self can sense power-levels.

Our players (for reference):
Bruniik the Bloodrager
Tagentikina the Fire Breather
Miraak the Monk
Urorakas the loony Knife Thrower
and Tess, the NPC Druid that helps to keep them all from dying with a healing wand and buffing spells

In the last session before last our heroes got help from the leader of Bronten, showing them the whereabouts to a training facility for the rogues of the gang called the Darkened Scales. The facility was abandoned but filled with traps that almost killed them, but after pulling through they were faced with an eye that had been scrying on them, who summoned a dragon made of darkness.

After beating this dragon of darkness, the shadows retreated, leaving behind one of the artifacts that powers the Mechanical Dragon back home, though strangely it wasn't the one they had been looking for. After looting the facility they returned to Bronten to sell the items, and upon arriving found the city being besieged by shadowy creatures summoned by a swirling cloud of darkness above. They went to help and defeated the remaining forces outside of the gate before the creatures breached the gate, Bruniik in particular carving through them with his crazy Bloodrager powers.

The creatures, when defeated, left behind the valuable stones used to make them. Urorakas picked them up and sold them to a wizard in Bronten, giving the players a nice little extra profit on top of what they'd sold from the dungeon. As they were leaving, a scout arrived hurriedly claiming that another cloud was heading towards Dragonsfjord, their hometown, and upon hearing this news the players booked it.

Upon arriving they found the remains of an insane battleground, corpses of Robots littered the ground leading up to the deactivated Mechanical Dragon guarding the village, with one of each of the parents of the players standing in front of the Dragon, welcoming them back from the adventure Ignatius (the leader) sent them to do.

It's gestalted with Kineticist, and I got the fun stuff from it, so I'm not too worried about those. I was mostly looking at the spells that are hard to replicate as a Kineticist or which are just nicer to have as a whole "fire-and-forget" spells/day thing.

Reunions aside, Ignatius asked for the artifact they were sent to get. A bit of awkward mumbling came about, and it was revealed to him that they got AN artifact, but not the one they were sent to get. Puzzled by this but happy nonetheless that they managed to get one, Ignatius attempted to install the artifact, though it didn't seem to do anything. After this he turned to the rest of them and announced that for completing their task they were to be rewarded with a ceremony making them full adults among Dragonsfjord... after cleaning up the mess from this invasion.

Time passes and Tess knocks on the door of Tagent in the middle of the night, saying that he didn't believe his father installed the Artifact correctly but didn't want to say anything in front of everyone else. They both go back to the Dragon and after a few minutes it seems that Tess figured it out, and almost immediately a voice begins ringing out in the heads of everyone's minds, calling out for help.

Tagent and Tess get massive headaches and pass out attempting to flee the Dragon, and the dreams of the rest that were asleep are disturbed by the voice as well as an extremely loud alarm ringing out. Miraak attempts to wake his father and his hands pass right through him, Urorakas gets up, sighs, and starts packing his gear saying "here we go again", and Bruniik gets pissed since he doesn't know where the sound is coming from and he's trying to sleep.

Eventually they track where the others went and find their bodies passed out on the road. For whatever reason they could only touch the bodies of Tess and Tagent, and upon waking them they go inspect the Dragon. The artifact is now getting really bright and hot, and when Tess tries to touch it the alarm stops, and an encroaching cloud of darkness that they'd seen earlier begins summoning more creatures that look to start a fight.

We ended there because it was getting late, so we'll start the nest session just going straight into the fight.

Completely removed dedications. Just straight up gone, so the equipment sphere now only gives you an equipment talent, nothing else. Poison in the alchemy talent is completely different now too. I don't know what it's supposed to do, but instead of stat damage it just fatigues and talents can make the poison sickened or work like the alchemist's mutagen. I've skimmed the poison package and toxins multiple times and I still don't understand what it's supposed to be used for.

I think the bonus 2 talents from level 1 are gone now and entirely replaced with a martial tradition. Unless it's an error, Alchemy's formula talents no longer use ranks/hit die for their save DC even though everything else that did still does.

Scholar got some new things, but my entire alchemy focus got fucked. Also there's not a good way to lower the required 15 minutes of crafting time per formulae, so while the wizard gets to prepare like twenty ways to end the world in an hour I get to make four improved acid flasks.

I have a link for Aethera https://www.sendspace.com/file/rkp7gz, you can judge for yourself Annon.

While not perfect I find more sincere than Starfinder.

Aethera is clearly a small group of people's vision of science/space fantasy.

Starfinder on the other hand was built to be Pop sci-fi .
