Thread topic: How many candles is too many?
>>
>>53547016
His torso seems too long.

>How many candles are too many

In a world where light is a cantrip and so many player races have dark vision, one is too much.

It would appear we are tired of triggering racists and are instead triggering virgins.
Unfortunately the two demographics have great overlap.

So you have a dwarven fighter, an elven wizard and a halfling rogue. Where does the variant human fit in?

I dunno, that's just how I wanted it.

Speaking of, updates based on recommendations from the last thread. Changed the way the seduction DC is calculated, and made things more advantage/disadvantage thing.

I also changed the Barbarian's Tread the Jeweled Thrones ability to instead grant an additional rage between long rests, to both the barbarian and anyone satisfied by the barbarian due to sex.
>>
>>53547192
That makes sense, something holy-y. I guess a half-elf is more fit for a paladin or bard.

- Barbarian: Krusk, male half-orc
- Bard: Gimble, male gnome
- Cleric: Jozan, male human
- Druid: Vadania, female half-elf
- Fighter: Tordek, male dwarf
- Monk: Ember, female human
- Paladin: Alhandra, female human
- Ranger: Soveliss, male elf
- Rogue: Lidda, female halfling
- Sorcerer: Hennet, male human
- Wizard: Mialee, female elf

Once the number of candles in the room exceeds the number of people in the room, you've got too many candles.

Damn I used to have a good bit of sexual writing for Lidda. Basically she is working as a prostitute in a brothel trying to seduce a human for the group and since Mialee has 7 ranks in Profession (butterface), it's up to Lidda to seduce this merchant to get some info out of her, so I had this long sequence describing the sex and how she was writhing on top of his as she rode his cock. I was 15 when I wrote it, the PHB 2 had just come out like a year ago and it had those new art of Lidda as the thieves guild master and something about the eyeliner just turned me on beyond belief. I was a virgin teenager at that point so I didn't really understand much of how sex worked, but yeah I wrote a good three paragraphs of it, it's kinda cringey but still pretty hot, I blew about a hundred loads to it back in high school. Later on I realized that it was kinda pedophilic if you think about it to have a halfling fucking a human but really I just liked thinking about how even a medium-sized human cock would be way too big for her and would probably hurt her quite a bit, but in an erotic way and she'd have like the hugest orgasm possible. This was before I even knew what a vagina looked like though because I didn't get to actually use internet reliably until I went to college. I still probably have it somewhere on my old hard drive, I'd have to plug it in again but it should still be there. Can't post it here, though, of course.
>>
>>53547112
The party encounters visions of people they cared for, that they left behind to go adventuring with. The visions seem benevolent, and guide the party along the way, hinting at a ritual that will solve the undead problem. Finally, the visions guide the party through the "convergence ritual". If the party completes the ritual, the entire land is consumed in rotting flesh, as the world is turned into a sentient, undead creation.

I think they have access to too many disciplines and probably get too many resource points too early, otherwise, not bad.

The big problem is that there aren't abilities and resistances, for everything else, against psionics. Counterspell and dispel magic, as well as magic resistance, need psi analogues.

Just curious, I'm a new player, and I was wondering where I can find a list of magic items. I read that there's a mechanic in the game for crafting magic items based on your level, but I have no idea what is available for say, my level 4 character to craft if I wanted to. Would it just be common items at this point?
>>
>>53547582
It can only be balanced, like most things, by someone with utter understanding of the system, and why it is imbalanced, or else you'll get "-20 points, -2 discipline" retards ruining anything that might make it fun.
>>
>>53547772

>>
>>53547646
Dispel Magic and Magic Resistance does work IIRC, as psionics is magic. Though they are not spells so counterspell does not work.

>>53547677
>>53547802

I run a pretty high magic game so my players may run into a few magic items after a big fight or in a city if they have the money, or for RP.

I also make a lot of magic items, I built 10 evolving artifact/Legendary items in my game that grow after some conditions have been met.

Also, I use some other homebrew items I find on the Unearthed Arcana boards from time to time.

I'm making almost all my magic items, except for consumables.

I'm telling fuck it to uncommon, rare and other stuff like that, too. Evey magic item in my game is unique.

My plan is to give at least one iconic magic item to each of them before they reach level 5 (they found the first one at the end of level 2, but will attune when reaching 3). These will be items that'll stay with them through the whole game, if possible. Either by growing in power along with them, or by being very useful, if not powerful, or even by being cursed and impossible to get rid of.

After that, though, I plan on slowing it down on these "good" items and I'll give them more temporary stuff (ones that break, ones that are useful only in very specific situations, one that are used on a quest and lose their purpose). I plan to keep it that way for a while.
>>
>>53548059
That would make sense. They toned stuff down from the playtest and played it safe in terms of setting or having interesting mechanics

That certainly might reflect a lowered budget
>>
>>53548059

the previous two editions all had massive, gaping flaws that anyone with the slightest bit of competence would have seen a mile away, and they have still managed to repeat many of their old mistakes (likely intentional, granted)

the vast majority of their "good stuff" this time around has been rehashing old adventures

the quality of what has been published for 5e is only impressive by the very low standards wizards has set for d&d

It's not about need, it's about want.
>>
>>53548198
Here, now that I mentioned it, I think I could use some help with that first stage:

My group is composed of:

Half-Orc Fighter, obsessed with defense
>has a semi-magical expensive armor already, so should get something not very powerful, should be more on the useful side
Half-Elf Ranger, hunter
>I'm thinking mildly powerful bow with utility aspect
Human Barbarian, totem warrior (bear)
>Already has his item, a weapon
Dwarf Moon Druid, wants caster stuff too, likes bears
>wanted to have a homebrew feat for double concentration, I'm thinking cursed sentient item that does it inconsistently but also spends his spell slots erratically sometimes
Human Cleric, heals and supports
>could use some help
Gnome Warlock, wants to summon cthulhu, likes illusions and mind tricks
>could use some help here too

I'd love to introduce in this early stage the idea of items with sort of "set bonuses" (I know it sounds video-gamy, I think it's a good concept still), so if anyone has an idea involving those please lmk
>>
>>53548630
Just to be clear, I'm not asking for help with all of them, just if someone has a random idea.

What are some ideas for mundane (Uncommon or lower) but strong (mechanically) weapons?

Off the top of my head
>Cold Iron Quarterstaff (Uncommon)
>Versatile (1d8), Heavy
>Requires 13 STR
>This rather heavy Quarterstaff is made of a magically nonconductive metal, and is not damaged by magic effects that would otherwise destroy equipment. Despite it's name, it has no extra effect against Fey; it's simply cool to the touch due to it's nonconductive material.
>>
>>53548346
It was interesting but they fucked up a ton for it to be a serious game. Most PvP sessions I've had end in a cluster-fuck of one person bowling the others over, then the guy who avoided fighting wins. Much like the Critical role session.
It was entertaining by the strength of its players though.

Speaking of this;

I have a white dragonborn Paladin worshipping Tamara in my current campaign. Level 3, and I want to give them their first item at a pretty significant milestone coming up.

I thought of just letting his God make his shield (very elaborately decorated with his own scales and a symbol of his God) magical, but I am stumped on what it should be doing. +1 probably, but beside that I am stumped for ideas.

Paladin of Devotion if it matters.

File: NET GUY.jpg (178KB, 500x333px) Image search: [Google]
NET GUY.jpg
178KB, 500x333px
So, I found a novel concept in character that I hadn't seen before. My group has taken to calling it "Net Guy."

The concept is a human with the crossbow expert feat. It allows you to
>"When you use the Attack action and attack with a one-handed weapon, you can use a bonus action to attack with a loaded hand crossbow you are holding."
It also allows you to make ranged attacks while in melee (not just with crossbows, but any ranged attack) without disadvantage.

So, the concept is, you attack with a net in melee range (no disadvantage) and since you attack with a one handed weapon (which the net is) and have a loaded hand crossbow in the other hand, you can then make a hand crossbow attack as a bonus action. Nets say in their description:
>"When you use an action, bonus action, or reaction to attack with a net, you can make only one attack regardless of the number of attacks you can normally make."
It only refers to actions, not turn when attacking with a net. So, as long as you use a different action than your attack with the net, you can attack again.

So, your turn is to move into melee, net a monster, then fire a hand crossbow at it with advantage, since it's now restrained. It then wastes the monsters actions or attacks to get out of the net, or they have disadvantage to attack with the net still on.

So, I have a few questions regarding nets, and weird things that happen if a net is made magical (enchanted, or with Magic Weapon spell)
>Is there any way to deal damage with the net attack itself? For instance, if Magic Weapon were cast on it, would it deal the +1 damage for being a +1 weapon?
>If so, since it deals damage, would you then add your dex/str bonus to that damage?
>Could a magic net restrain an incorporeal undead like a ghost?
>Most magic items are much harder to damage. Would a magic net require more damage be applied before being destroyed?
>>

>What can you even use a living green Dragon for?

All of this is stuff to ask your DM. Most of these questions can be answered with "whatever you want, because magic"
>>
>>53548950
Hmm, that might actually be good. The party is full of retards, they could use someone who could help them with advice and knowledge in general.

The Dragon wasn't supposed to be a threat actually. It was half of their CR, so I am considering just letting it swear it's allegiance to them, no strings attached. It was only because the Dragon was suspected of being responsible for a lot of havoc on a nearby village, but the party didn't know green dragons doesn't breathe fire. (Highest arcana check was fucking 6, so yeah)

I was thinking for the fighter something more along the lines of a magic anvil (he's smith's tools) that lets him buff the party melee every long rest.

Idk about the bow yet, I was thinking something to do with ropes.

The barbarian's weapon is a water related spear I've posted in a couple of threads already, grows stronger with the user.

My cleric is a crazed life domain dude who thinks he saw a prophet. The only problem is, his god is not actually real, so he can't have items made specifically for his god.

What illusionist abilities?

>Her Bastion
(Sheild, Requires Attunement by a Paladin or Cleric of Tamara)
This holy shield was crafted by the Goddess of Mercy herself.
While attuned to this shield you gain a +1 bonus to AC. This shield can also be used as a spellcasting focus for your spells. Once per day you may cast the spell Sanctuary using your spell save DC.

I would put more but it's for a level 3 character.

Recently just ran a pvp game myself and it was a blast.
Of course, it does often end up that the guy who just tries to avoid combat wins.

It's quite similar to something like super smash brothers in that way. That's why there exists the unspoken rule of "fuck up the guy who's just hiding from us."
It's classic. And then inevitably the betrayal of the temporary alliances. Fun to sit and watch as a DM.

It IS incredibly unbalanced as a game type, but so long as you go into it with everyone understanding it's just for fun, then it can be a good night.
The biggest thing you can do as a DM to try and balance things is making sure the map doesn't particularly favor one player over the rest.

Yeah, we had to stop doing them because they became predictable. If you've got a Barb(especially bear) he's going to steamroll shit unless a caster gets a huge spell off on them. Same goes for Druids with wild shape, we had a mystic who fucking stomped people as well. Long and short of it is there are a handful of classes that are flat out busted for player versus player scenarios, but they can absolutely be crazy fun if the players do more than just play the mechanics.

When everyones double-crossing everyone, and the battle-field itself is interesting and filled with crazy magic items, healing and dangerous traps...man its a good time. Until you have that one game where people die in one turn of combat every round.

Fighter:
I was thinking more of something along the lines of: if a weapon is "prepared in this" (like sharpened if it's a sharpening wheel) its first critical hit that day deals an extra die of damage, then loses its especially sharp edge.

Bow
I don't really know, didn't give it too much thought yet. Maybe "you can make a magical rope form between the bow and the last arrow you shot". That ought to cause some chaos.

The barb's spear:
>I'm using generic names here just because I haven't really thought them up yet
Also worthy of notice that magic weapons don't get +1, +2 or +3 in this scenario, in general.

Water-related-thing Spear-lance-whatever
(Pike, requires attunement)
Looks like greenish bronze that was found underwater. Has holes in its tip which hold liquids like a pen with ink.

Starting properties
The wielder never has to make any checks due to being on a wet surface (such as an acrobatics check not to fall).
Whenever this weapon is wet, it deals 1 extra point of damage.

If the wielder has a proficiency bonus of at least +4
The damage increases to 1d6.

If the wielder has the polearm master feat
Whenever you hit with the Attack of Oportunity from someone entering your reach, you may move the creature 5ft to the left or to the right, as long as it’s medium or smaller

If the wielder has the great weapon master feat
Whenever you take the -5 penalty on your attack roll, if that attack hits, you may cause the opponent to bleed out. This effect works like a bearded devil’s glaive.

If the McGuffin is placed on its shaft
The weapon now lets you cast the following spells (DC 15):
Tidal Wave 1/day
Control Water 1/week
Tsunami - once. This can be recharged by a caster (who can use this spell) spending an 8th level or higher spell slot for five consecutive days.

If the wielder drowns
Afterwards, the wielder can cast Water Breathing as a ritual as long as he’s attuned.

>Keen Anvil
While attuned to this item you may choose a creature's (or creatures'?) weapon, and sharpen it in this blessed anvil. This process takes 30 minutes. Once this process is completed this weapon scores a critical hit on a 19-20 and on a critical hit deals an extra dice of damage, after this critical hit the weapon loses this property. A weapon can only be sharpened with this anvil once per day.

Is 5e Modern a bad idea? I'm thinking of adapting the rules from "Modern Magic UA" and "My new d20 modern campaign" and balance them a bit.

Anyone have any ideas for using guns and stuff? One idea I saw made it so you have to use a bonus action to aim guns, otherwise you don't add your Proficiency Bonus to attacks. Also that you have disadvantage with Ranged Gun attacks if a melee character's within 10ft.

>>53550016
I'm going to use the DMG rules, which have reloading after a certain amount of shots as an action. I do feel that guns just completely overshadow melee (Which is fair in reality) but it would mean there would be no STR or melee weapon users.

Maybe only Melee Weapon Attacks add Ability Modifier to damage? Otherwise even someone with sidearm proficiency lets you do 2d8+DEX with a Revolver. I could always just reduce gun damage a bit I guess.

>>53549998
Once again, 99% of it's fluff. The rest is just adding equipment.

>Bow
Sorry, I'm just throwing out some ideas to see if anything sparks something. Rope Trick would be pretty good as a once short/long rest spell if you are going the magical rope angle.
Here is my attempt.

>Insert Bow Name Here
This magic longbow forms an unbreakable grasslike rope at your command. Twice per day, when you hit a target with an arrow using this bow you may choose to conjure the rope between the hit target and an object within 20 feet of you. The rope stays taut and can be used as a walkable surface (Acrobatics: DC 15) or slid down. Once per short rest, you may cast the spell Rope Trick by firing an arrow into the sky.

(Think Green Arrow)

>Pike
I would recommend something that does not involve feats to keep them relevant, that way if someone else were to use them they would not feel like they can't use it effectively. Also, the Bearded Devil ability on GWM is quite powerful as is and I think scales pretty well, it's stronger than the Wounding Swords.

>Cleric
Man, this is a tough nut to crack. As not having a god or something somewhat tangible makes making an item that's character specific require more detail on the character. At the moment I'm thinking about a buffed up staff of healing that comes with some buffs/wards or something that can give him Clairvoyance at some point.

Just take away something like sharpshooter and crossbow feats. But leave the rest as is.

If you're running a modern game your fight zones shouldn't be too open in theory, right? You might be in a building or in a small alley, or street.

The person who wants to go melee will probably pick something like a barbarian, and will run up, not giving a fuck about taking bullet damage, and fuck everyone up while giving them disadv on their shots at your boys with guns.
>>
>>53550166
True, I just realised a bunch of the heavier armour gives Ballistic Resistance. So I might make the STR requirement a bit higher so the strong guys can murder you.

I might change Monk's arrow catching into natural Ballistic Resistance for the round as a reaction as well. Say that they learn Ki empowered ways to stop the mundane guns from piercing them.

Also I'll remove Sharpshooter and replace it with something for gun users. CE is straight out because it removes the main drawback of Ranged and bonus action pistol shots would be too much.

Thanks for the help man.

Mostly because the high as damage on all guns wouldn't really help much. 1d10+DEX+Level DR is nice but when you're being hit twice by a weapon dealing 2d10+5 each it's nowhere near as good as it was with bows and crossbows.

Plus it's kinda too stupid for me, the idea of someone catching a bullet is just wrong.

>>53550368
Maybe they can get a bonus to AC against Ranged Attacks as an reaction then? +2 might be alright though it's pretty fiddly.

Saves, grappling, shoves for advantage, ignoring him if he's unkillable and dealing no damage and letting him have his fun.

You don't deal with tanks with raw numbers, you'll lose everytime. You deal with tanks using utilities and special moves beyond just "deal damage"

Glad I was able to help!

>Pike
For my items, I use roleplay or have the user do something special.
For example, I have a magic glaive in the list called The Martialist. It was forged during a long war and made to end it. To upgrade it you have to:

>Awoken
Reach level 12
Assist in ending/defeating a large siege on a capital or kingdom.
OR
Reach level 12
Slay 30 creatures attacking a location.

>Exalted
Reach Level 16
End a large scale battle raging in another plane.

I like the concept of items changing in the middle of a battle or it being a large surprise to them. So they will never know how to unlock their true potential, its always a surprise.

One big thing though about this is that I try to make the base form of the item good throughout the character's life. That way even if they can't upgrade it or don't figure out how to it will still be of use to them. Oh and also the way to upgrade them can be changed that way if they are not having as much fun or if it turns out too easy to upgrade the item I can change it a little to make it more fun for them or feel like they earned it.
>>
>>53550571
If you mean how do you let them roll a new one?
I start them 2 levels below the party but they level twice as fast until they're equal with the party.
So really they're just below everyone else for 2 level-ups.

>level 10 party
>level 8 newbie
>level 11 party
>level 10 newbie
>level 11 party
>level 11 newbie

But then again my games revolve more around combat than they do around roleplay. And the lower level is more to emulate them being newcomers with more fledgling abilities compared to everyone else. But being with a group of people a cut above the rest conditions them.
>>
>>53550619
Fuck it I'm tired.
I meant to say
>my games revolve more around roleplay than they do around combat
>>
>>53550599
>>53550599
Oh, well I'd ask the group honestly. Most of the time my group rules it they are near(within spitting distance like a level lower at most and even then) to the main group XP wise because it sometimes sucks to be with a huge gap, but as far as good and magic items go I'd say give them a portion if it makes sense for the character. If this dude is just starting adventuring he shouldn't have a dragons horde.

Magic items are completely up to DM choice, but I personally think its better to tailor new items at their character rather than just give them old shit. But if the party looted the old items I'd hold of on giving the new guy starters.
>>
>>53550567
I don't wanna fuck with the enemies stats to much. The pdf's idea is while guns are pretty dang powerful, it's balanced by armour.

If the melee guys are getting resistance from their bullet proof armour and DR then guns kind of even out against them. While still being deadly to people who have 8 Strength and can't physically carry around big ass science fiction bullet stopping armour.

Monks and Barbarians are forced into melee unlike every other class, with Monks not even getting Armour Proficiency or Damage reduction. I know Monks aren't meant to be tanky but someone forced into melee should at least have nearly equal footing with other melee characters.
>>
>>53550599
Same level as their character was, reset xp to be start of the level. Standard gear for the level, standard gold for the level.
>>
>>53550634
Monks can do a great job in such an environment if they use their high mobility to get in and stun people, as well as bonus action dodge.
Just by being near the people with guns they'll impose disadv on the ranged characters.

>snipers firing from high ground
The monk can just run up the side of the building, potentially even pushing them off with flurry if open hand.

I think their versatility works out fine in such a campaign.

That does become a problem at low levels though. If your party is level 3 and the newcomer is level 1 they're pretty likely to just get oneshotted the first time they take damage, which might turn them off of the game.

But for higher level play I can live with it.

I haven't actually played in a campaign above level 4 in almost a decade because progression is either super slow or people lose interest. There's one campaign I've been playing for 2 years, two afternoons a month, and we're still fucking level 4 (3 actually since we suffered a TPK last week).

Well, the temp HP doesn't happen to level 3. It's still good at level 4 though but not hugely broken.

At that point you're on a 1d8 Hitdie mostly and most other people are approaching a pretty big burst in damage with Extra Attack.

So it's a good build, but not really broken. Barbarian/Mystic could have resistance to weapon attacks and a feat to spend on something else.

A homebrew setting that you could technically say is the forgotten realms, but only so much as "The cities of Baldur's Gate, Waterdeep and Neverwinter are around here somewhere, you're in monsterland wilderness." counts.

I use the actual setting material about as much as I use Eberron's, which is to say none at all. It's essentially just borrowing names and geography for things, because coming up with names and geography is boring and occasionally difficult.

Anons? I need to make a 5e kitsune race for an Oriental Adventures setting - can I get some help balancing this shit out?

Kitsune
Ability Score Modifiers: +2 Charisma, +1 Intelligence
Size: Medium
Speed: 30 feet
Vision: Darkvision 60 feet
Foxfire: You know the Produce Flame and Dancing Light cantrips, which you can cast with Charisma. At 3rd level, you can cast Faerie Fire with this trait as a 1st level spell once per long rest, again using Charisma as your casting ability score.
Trickster’s Guile: You have Proficiency in Charisma (Deception).

Can anyone give me some advice on how to handle a particular location in a campaign? I'm going to have an ancient elven city that has been buried underground. A long time ago the Queen came into contact with demons/devils and allowed them entry into the material plane. >>
>>53551434
Huh, do you really think Faerie Fire needs extra castings? I must admit that's not a response I ever expected to here.

Hengeyokai racial trait expanded upon, for reference:
Hengeyokai: You belong to a race of magical beasts that can assume partially or wholly humanoid form, as well as revert to your true bestial shape when it suits you. As an action, you can shift into any one of your three forms.

Hybrid Form is your default form. It functions as normal for a character.

In your Human Form, you gain Advantage on all Charisma (Deception) checks made to pass yourself off as human. It otherwise functions as Hybrid Form.

In your Beast Form, which is determined by your race, your game statistics are replaced by the statistics of the beast, but retaining your alignment, personality, Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma scores. You also retain all of your skill and saving throw proficiencies, in addition to gaining those of the beast; if you and the beast have the same proficiency and the beast’s bonus is higher than yours, you use the beast’s bonus.

Changing shapes does not alter your current hit points, maximum hit points, or hit dice.

You can remain in any of these three forms as long as you wish, but must consciously choose to change shapes.

You can change shapes once at 1st level, twice at 5th level, and thrice at 11th level. You regain all expended uses of this trait when you complete a long rest.

If you have exhausted your uses of shapeshifting, you can revert back to hybrid form, but you cannot then change again into beast or human form.
>>
>>53551467
That surprised me as well.

I had an old character who had but (nonfunctional) wings and a tail. Always seemed appropriate.

We figured that it just varied from dragonborn to dragonborn, and that it didn't change anything ruleswise.

Strange fluff. What's the reasoning exactly for them not having those pretty normal dragon traits? Not all dragons have wings, so that is at least justifiable, but the tail?
>>

>>
How much damage should a fragmentation grenade do? I'm thinking that it should require an action to throw, throwing range of STRx5 and deal 4d6 Piercing.
>>
>>53551510
They aren't actually related in any way to dragons in most settings, is why. They just look like them to a certain degree.
In most (including Faerun, which currently is the core rulebook race explanation) they were effectively a separate race entirely, and in fact they HATE dragons since they were effectively treated like garbage on their homeworld.

Consider the differences between different species of primate and you have a good idea; clearly similar in basic appearance, but it's impossible to mistake a gorilla or chimpanzee for a human being.
>>
>>53551620

They're made to be thrown, so shouldn't they just have the same range as other thrown weapons?
>>
>>53551607
So... half-dragons are the result of polymorphed dragons fucking humans which have tails. And dragonborn are just a separate race that don't.... That's really odd that there would be two separate races that are basically the same but with such odd phenotypical differences..
>>
>>53551510
Another thing they don't have; dragonborn come in all sorts of colors, but these colors can come in mixed patterns and they have absolutely no relation to their breath weapons type.

A dragonborn can be mostly brown with green spots, and have ice breath for example.
>>
>>53551651
Half-dragons were never originally intended to be a player race but a million goddamn people REALLY wanted to play them, so with 4e they just said fuck it and let people play a totally unrelated draconic species.
>>
>>53551650
I'm actually doing a pretty massive overhaul on weapons and armour for a modern system adjustment.

I'm making throwing weapons scale in distance using Strength. Give Strength a few buffs because of guns using DEX.

Also Thief's can use Dexterity for the distance and throw grenades as a bonus action. I'll likely rename them Agents though.
>>
>>53551651
Half-dragons aren't a race, they're more of an unusual hybrid. Like, after the half-dragon has kids (if it even can) it likely has less and less of the draconic shit each time.
Dragonborn however are in fact a fully functioning species.

>>53551696
If its going to be a combat room make it interesting with places for movement, cover, hazards even(watch for holes so they can't exploit shoving to negate shit). Throw some puzzles in there and a few traps. Don't feel the need to make every room something crazy but a good portion of the dungeon should be filled with fun shit.
>>
>>53551695
Yes, but what can you do?
Nobody's ever accused WotC of being smart.
>>53551711
Because they never HAD any tails. Or wings. Dragonborn are not related in any way to dragons except by their taxonomy.
Kinda like how all dinosaurs are dinosaurs but a diplodocus is NOT the same thing as a ticeratops.
>>
>>53551651

The difference is Dragonborn aren't descendants of Dragons.
There are multiple origin myths, but they basically boil down to-
1. Creations of the same god who created dragons, either created before as a sort of prototype, or afterwards to be servants for their true prized creations.

2. Arose as a result of the Dragon god's death, either arising from the god's blood/body, or from humanoids bathed in the blood from the battle.
3. Ancient group of humans changed into Dragonborn by a dragon deity for what I'm sure seemed like a good reason at the time.
>>
>>53551757
Oh, okay. That makes.... a little sense. Sure.
>>
>>53551757
In Faerun they seem to be unsure of their origins themselves, except that whatever they are they are ANGRY. ANGRY ABOUT DRAGONS.
>>
>>53551771
It's not all that strange, really.
"Dragon" in D&D isn't like saying "human", it's more like saying "feline" or "canine"; it's an accurate term but you have to narrow it the fuck down because it covers a broad range of creatures, many of which don't even look much alike beyond the shape of their heads.

True Dragons are the ones in the M&M, and even THEY have some abnornal varieties in certain settings such as Shadow dragons, song dragons, fang dragons, and brown dragons.
>>
>>53551790
And dragon turtles. (Which I can't wait to kill my PotA players with) That's fair enough. What's a brown dragon though?

>>53551773

I mostly try to ignore FR lore when it comes to getting a baseline for stuff that didn't originate in FR.
And also, you know...in general.
>>
>>53551806
In 4e? Desert-dwelling Chromatics with sail-like fins along their bodies instead of wings. They can still fly, but they prefer to burrow. They're gastronomes who love eating and savoring foods, to the point their hoards are often a blend of rare spices, valuable utensils, ancient and priceless cooking/gardening/animal husbandry texts, and exotic livestock for their dinner table.

They also spit sand that can strip the flesh from your bones.
>>
>>53551806

>>53551818
>I mostly try to ignore FR lore when it comes to getting a baseline for stuff that didn't originate in FR.
Dragonborn are too new to have any other kind I'm afraid.
Their origin setting is Nentir Vale, which is extremely fluff-light so there's not much of an explanation of them except that they used to be Empire-builders who fought with the tieflings when the tieflings had an empire.
>And also, you know...in general.
Forgotten Realms lore actually isn't bad, or even bland given how detail-intensive it is about some remarkably inane things.
It's rather like vanilla or chocolate ice cream instead; tasty, but today we use these ice cream flavors as the basis for other, more complex flavors of ice cream.

Puzzles should be either trivial and easy or optional. You dont want people to get stuck on them, without possibility to continue.

Coming up with an idea for the dragonborn Paladin who needs a magic shield, how does this sound? Level 3, but everybody else gets something slightly similar. I made it semi-cursed for fluff reasons. It is intended to have a potential downside.

>Oath of Tamara (Requires Attunement by a Dragonborn Paladin)
>This shield is blessed by Tamara, for a devout servant in need of guidance.

>This blessed shield adds +1 AC, and the shield counts as the holy symbol.

>The wearer is no longer resistant to a damage type as per their draconic origin, but instead immune.

>Whenever a breath weapon or similar type of area of effect is made, that hits both the bearer and an ally, the Dragonborn must take a reaction to block it. This save is made with advantage, and if it succeeds, the Dragonborn takes full damage and stops the cone from hitting anyone behind him. If it fails, he still takes damage, but doesn't stop the AoE.

>Claw of Tamara
>The shield has a Claw like shape, and can be used as a +1 off hand weapon doing 1d4 slashing damage.

It feels appropriate to the character, and the God, and being a white dragonborn, I am not really worried about immunity to cold damage.

Totally unlike other dragons.
They looked like copper dragons, except they were silver and pretty tiny as far as dragons go. They were all capable of polymorphing into a human shape, but only ONE human shape apiece (which they actually spent about 90% of their time in), and that shape was always a human female.
They didn't collect hordes either, and instead focused on lot on living regular lives with lots of interaction with other humanoids, which they enjoyed.

So...dragon-waifus, I guess?
I think the implication was that they mated with male humanoids and had daughters who were ALWAYS song dragons, so it's debatable if they were even dragons at all.

I think I remember reading that though they LOOKED like dragons that there was a strong possibility that they were actually a kind of Fae creature that simply shared their shape, since they basically followed none of the other "rules" of dragons and True Dragons honestly had no idea of where they came from at all, further suggesting no actual relation.
It was later put in that they frequented this one region that had a lot of close connections to the Feywild, so that might actually be the case and that they were sort of "migrant" dragons from another dimension.

>GEM DRAGONS??!?!
Yup.
They ran the gamut of Neutral-alignments rather then Good or Evil ones, like the Metallic and Chromatics. They also used no magic, instead relying mostly on psionic powers instead.

Look, Wikipedia has a list of every bullshit dragon type ever made, most having come out in 3e or 4e material.

In 5e it would probably be Bludgeoning damage.

Yellow Dragons(in 2e at least) were winged desert-dwelling dragons that burrowed and spit hot sand.

Brown Dragons were wingless desert dwellers that burrowed and spit acid.
>>
>>53552273
There was a lot of overlap there I guess.
>>

The Lung dragons, originally known as Oriental dragons, appeared in the original Fiend Folio (1981), including the li lung (earth dragon), the lung wang (sea dragon), the pan lung (coiled dragon), the shen lung (spirit dragon), the t'ien lung (celestial dragon), and the yu lung (carp dragon).[17] Two more were added in the 1st edition Oriental Adventures book, the chiang lung (river dragon) and the tun mi lung (typhoon dragon). The Oriental dragons later appeared in the Monstrous Compendium Forgotten Realms Appendix (1989).[18]
Oh fuck off...
>>
>>53552281
Yuuup.
Mind you, not all of these dragons canonically exist in most official settings.
In FR you mostly heard about the regular types for example, plus shadow dragons.
Even the added 3e Faerun dragons never really showed up or were mentioned anywhere outside of the book they were described in.
>>
>>53552299
But they still ALL have tails.
>>
>>53552278

Yeah, and that's disregarding the fact that Blue Dragons were ALREADY evil Dragons who preferred a desert habitat.
>>
>>53552316
Hell, Lung Dragons are ALL tail when you think about it.
>>
>>53552324
Blue dragon = best dragon
>>
>>53552331

... that seems like something a racist True Dragon would say.
>>
>>53552324
It's why I never use any beyond the basic MM ones; there's plenty of flexibility there.
I've always done my damndest to make each one memorable and have a unique personality and agenda too; I think in god-knows-how-many years GMing I've only used dragons maybe nine times.
>>
>>53552077
Then make it a good one.... sheesh.
>>

They lack a party face so Bard or Dragon Sorcerrer or Warlock.

That is one Chaddy Halfling.

Also, since my rouge doesn't have nightvision the funniest/most entertaining moments come in the dark when the DM just does what he wants.

Lung or long or loong literally means dragon in Wade-Giles, Mandarin and Cantonese respectively.
>>
>>53552365

Well, I think an argument could be made for there being a niche for Brown or Yellow Dragons, just not really both of them.

And between the two of them I think the Brown is the more unique dragon.
Which is why I believe the 4e devs chose it to be the dominant half when they combined them.
>>
>>53552427

Neat, not really relevant though.
>>
What's the best Cleric for a bow wielder?
>>
>>53552465
Just giving meaning behind why they're called that, and that lung dragon means you're saying dragon dragon, kinda like ATM machine.
>>
>>53552491
Ranger.
>>
>>53552497
Or idiot leftist.

So are we getting a 5e Draconomicon at some point or what?

I found the lack of dragons or dragonkin in Volo's kinda disappointing.

>>53552528
What kinds of dragons would you like to see? I'm pretty sure everything is there already.

Daily reminder to praise your Oathbreaker overlords.

Break your oath and worship satan for superpowers today! You or your team didn't need charm immunity anyway, did you?
>>
>>53552497

Well no, it's saying (Chinese Dragon) Dragon when discussing Chinese-type D&D dragons.
>>
>>53552547
Sure thing, noise machine cultist.
>>
>>53552511
Or "uptight right-winger".
Or "fat American"!
>>53552528
After two whole editions of unwanted and I imagine largely unused dragon type spam, I actually found it rather refreshing.

>>53552548
How does the comparison look before level 11?

>>53552561
Both, actually, but still logically and morally in the right... go figure.
>>
>>53552552
The word lung literally means dragon though, it doesn't specify it has to be Chinese.
>>
>>53552578
I'm pretty sure lung means the organ that you breathe with, actually.
>>
>>53552576
>Both, actually, but still logically and morally in the right... go figure.
Leftists are easily triggered, but rightwingers just cannot take a joke.
It's actually rather remarkable how consistent these two things are.

>>53552590
Might be really difficult with just one.

See, I think you're wrong there. There's a difference between not taking a joke and not thinking a joke is funny.
>>
>>53552614
Whatever. I'm not really either so I can't say.
>>
>>53552596

It'll look pretty much like this. Note the oathbreaker here is level 7 though.
Fighter pulls ahead slightly at level 6 and 10 from ASIs.

What tools if any do the DMs in here use? I'm fiddling with Master Plan at the moment, but it was built for 4e so a bunch of its features are pretty much bloat for me. I really like the look of Realm Works, but I can't spare the money for it right now.

Mainly I'm looking for a plot and character relationship organizer.

I know it's not necessary, but as a first time DM for an upcoming session, I'd really like to keep everything organized so I don't screw over my players by mis-remembering details or messing up other important information.
>>
>>53552543
Well there's...

Brown Dragons.
Deep Dragons.
Fang Dragons.
Lung Dragons.
Linnorms.

And maybe some more drakes or dragonspawn.

Pbworks is a solid online wiki.
Zim is an offline one.
I've found them both useful.
Draw.io is good for flowcharts which are handy to organise overall plot structures

Although at the moment I just organise stuff in various folders and subfolders on my desktop and upload them to Google drive for secondary referencing. I further print off relevant stuff I'm likely to.use in that session into a physical folder.

Also always have a calendar in game to track days and dates and give the players birthdays.
>>
>>53552578

Yeah but it means dragon IN CHINESE, if a guy speaking Chinese busted out the English word "dragon" when all the other words he used were Mandarin I'd assume he meant a dragon of the Western variety.
>>
Would it be a good idea to take a few levels of fighter as a hexblade for a fighting style and extra attack?

A typical magic item would resist damage, so it'd take at least 10 slashing to destroy, for example.

In your opinion, which 5e official adventure modules did you like best, if any at all? Which did you dislike the most?
