See, the thing about the Swordlord is you don't need to BE a Swordlord mechanically to be one in the fluff. At their core, a Swordlord is meant to be a one-handed swordsman using a long, slightly-curved blade to perform feats of extreme swordsmanship and acrobatics. This is easily presented with a Scarlet Throne-focused Warder (I say Warder because the Shield Bonus from ZS best represents parrying) that prestiges into Landsknecht.

Oh, absolutely! Warder does a good job representing the Swordlord's ability to "get in the zone" (Defensive Focus), parrying (Aegis) and bravado for dueling (Armiger's Mark) but the Warlord certainly shows off their knack for getting snappy during a fight, what with those gambits and all.

The ONLY even halfway-decent mechanics thing to come out of ALL content related to swordlords is the Sword Scion trait being a nice perk to encourage you to use a longsword, sometimes. If you get the chance, I recommend watching Sword of the Stranger, an anime movie from a while back. Loa Long (A blond dude working with the chinese) and Nanashi (a ronin) sound like they fit exactly what you're going for.

Neither of them is really "cowboy" but they fit everything else, and you can work in your own elements from there.

Would you play a game as the first batch of foreigners to discover a continent in the twilight of a massive empire in rebellion.

Essentially you end up on a continent having been the first set of foreigners to map a safe trade route there. No one has been in regular contact with these people for forty years. Turns out 35 years ago a rebellion started against the current regime. It ended 2 years before the ship arrive. The rebellion took such a tole on the country that most of men folk around are either extremely old or extremely young. The side of the establishment won and the territories were resubjugated and what remains of the rebellion gone into hiding.

The last battle of the war was so bloody that it left over 300,000 men to die on the field over the course of two weeks, the worst of the death tole occurring the last two days where the current emperor took to the field himself bearing arms and relics from the imperial vault.

So setting takes the idea of a country after the rebellion was squashed, but also fought to the point that the establishment is exhausted. Women now fill many positions due to the severe lack of men. The territories are under rule again, but more because they can't muster the force to declare independence than they fear another army to come knocking on their door.

Secret plots, old rebels, imperial spies, secret police, and more would infest every major city. Paranoia would be at a all time high because the empire was wounded.

Sima Yi deposed and executed Cao Shuang for treason, after the latter put family and cronies into important positions, wrecked the state and governed completely incompetently, wasting riches on "entertainment". Sima Yi set up a coup against him (laughably simple; he closed the gates while he was out of town, but that's the caliber of intellect that he was dealing with) and had basically turned every official to his side (except those incompetents he'd be executing soon) by the time Cao Shuang got back to even knock at the doors.

The biggest changes you need to worry about with monsters, is 3.0 damage reduction worked very differently.
Other than that it's mostly class rebalancing, the removal of called shots in 3.5, and a slightly condensed skill list.

Pathfinder further condenses the skill list, removes the cross class skill penalties and multiclassing XP penalties, and removes XP costs for spells and crafting, and unifies the combat maneuver rules (grapple is still overcomplicated though), does its own "rebalance" which doesn't fix much that was actually imbalanced, other than polymorph effects, and (my group likes that it) exponentially multiplies the amount of character customization you get compared to 3.0, 3.5, or 5e.

As a dm I have used 3.0 and 3.5 adventures and monsters and magic items and spells and feats and ACFs in Pathfinder on many options without any advance conversion work. Works fine.

Go with the Cinderlands. You've got historical tension with orcs, giants, and Shoanti, and that's before Chelaxian, and then Korvosan and other garbage demi-Chelaxians start fucking around.

And Kaer Maga is one of the neatest cities in the setting. I'd definitely research the Cinderlands and the Storval Rise, and that whole area of Varisia in general. Way more interesting than some Katapeshi garbage, and it's within the sphere of the Ancient Thassilonians, so you get all that badass stuff going on too, for cool hooks. Ancient Wizard Kings! Very neat.

Carried over in his nationalistic / identitary fury, your character ends up ravaging cities full of innocents, because they have been built on the burial grounds of his ancestors, that died as slaves, were force-converted, and whose culture was repeatedly attempted to be murdered.

They might have it coming since a long time, in the end innocents still burn. Not only is he Evil, but he doesn't actually realize he is, and thinks he is just a righter of wrong, and he's Lawful. Stuff like that.
