Halo Fleet Battles/Ground Command edition

>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks. /hwg/ doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to very specific games, so this thread isn't tied to a game, or a genre, lets talk about fun wargames.

Any scale, any genre, any company, any minis. Skirmishers welcome. Rules designers welcome.

>Examples of games that qualify
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_miniature_wargames
Grimdark Future, Age of Fantasy, Mighty Armies, Dragon Rampant, Of Gods and Mortals, Frostgrave, Hordes of the Things, Songs of Blades and Heroes, Freebooter's Fate, Dark Age, LotR and anything that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread (gorkamundheim).

Guy who was asking about Alkemy last thread reporting in with results from the game I had today.
I don't play fantasy games (aside from Mordheim way back) so that might colour my opinion, but I quite liked it. Nothing too spectacular but it's all pretty fun and simple and the unique dice work well (I was using a conversion chart and normal d6).
The combat card system feels a little overwrought though. If you're going against an inactive opponent there's no reason to not use a Brutal attack.
It's a shame the models are so expensive even for a skirmish game, and then add P&P from France on top. It doesn;t seem like there are any UK stockists, am I being blind?

Sweet Jesus that's a big plasma beam. I was expecting this thing to be doofy and cheap due to it's designation of 'Merchant Cruiser', but if it's actually a bigger slower CPV I might have to pick up a couple.

Also Derek said this back in April:

>Just popping online to give you an insight into what we have just finished in playtest and design for Halo: Ground Command.

>As of today we have finished Covenant/Banished: Banshees, Brute Overseers, Brute Assault Troops, Brute Chieftains, Suicide/Demolition Grunts, and Marauders!

>....along with UNSC: Falcons, Marines, Helbringers, Jackrabbits, Noble Team, and Grizzlies!
>Now, to be clear this just means they are completed in design and testing.... I don't know when they are coming out...so don't ask! :P But I thought it would be a good idea to keep you in the loop as to where we are going in the near future.

Unlike their home grown IPs, they're partnered with Microsoft and 343 for these - the consequences of leaving these babies in the car unattended would be pretty catastrophic as a result.
>>
>>53450026
According to Neal from Spartan Games, they are in a 3 year contract with M$ for this game, so that might be why they have been doing the support for the game regularly and why this month they released those 1/300 scale airships, because they have to release stuff otherwise they get M$ lawyers giving them awkward calls at 3 in the morning.
>>
>>53450123
>>53450151
I have to admit, I'm glad Microsoft is so protective of the franchise.
>>
>>53450178
Ever since Fleet Battles was announced Neil and Derek said how draconian M$ and 343 were on their beast of war interviews, so yeah worse case scenario we get people raising a ruckus at 343, the last time it happen Neil conveniently announced their new contract and if it were to happen again I wouldn't put it beyond M$ to just bankrupt them and buy them out which might actually be good for SG own IP's since I doubt they could do worse.

You've got Future War Commander which has army lists for a whole range of SF stuff including armies "very close" to those sold by GW.
Or there is Laserstorm from Nordic Weasel Games which is for big SF battles. The pdf is ten bucks from WGV.

I remember why LOTR is such a good game, even at 350 pts I'm getting at least about 30 guys per army
>>

There is no limit on models, an example army in the LOTR book has 75 guys in it.

They put out a survey asking people what they want from it. That includes how many models a game has, what the models are made out of, what models they will make, ect. So it is clear that things are in more of a planning stage currently.
>>
>>53457893
around 400 is usually good. tournaments typically run around the 600 level. anymore than that and you're heading into big army territory.
>>
>>53458470
>Witch Hunters
Hasslefree has a few Inquisitor type guys, as does Black Chapel miniatures.
Pretty sure some of the Reaper clerics could do the job too.
>Carnival of Chaos (for Mordheim)?
If I were to build one I'd probably use a mix of plaguebearers and Frostgrave cultists.
The new nurgle cultists from the 40k starter looks pretty good to. If you ebay some of those and kitbash some fantasy weaopns on them you are halfway there I think.

BGOT looks interesting.

How big is the average army compared to the stater set?
>>
>>53463476
I got the hardback a few days ago and have been skimming it through when time has permitted me. It uses D10 as the basic die. Factions are interesting but if none suits your idea then you can pick Freelancers as a faction. There are basically Brotherhod of steel like Archaologists, druidic GAIA genemutants, road warriors, AI synthetics and many others.

Teams consist of minimum 3 models (commander + 2+ troopers and you can pick 0-2veterans to it, maximum of 15 models). Figures have 360 vision and facing doesn't matter. Models areWYSIWYG but rules tell what items can be ignored for thus.

Three different types of units True Humans, Mutants and Synthtics. Troop statlines are customiseable(as far I've read). Commander can have 3traits, veterans 2 and troopers 1.

Stats are combat, constitution and command, traits and situations modify these. I'm typing on tablet. This is hard.Sofar very interesting and definetly worth the buy ifyou miss Necromunda but want something bit more developed and folows modern game design.
>>
>>53463697
The starter set is roughly 800pts of Concord and 400pts of Ghar, but you could probably stretch the Concord to 1k and Ghar to 500 if you buy every upgrade you can get.

The game is played on similar point scales to 40k, generally 500-2000pts, and basic infantry tend to be 15-25pts, while vehicles tend to be 100pts for lighter ones all the way up to 400pts for heavily armed and armoured tanks.

So a usual size of a game tends to be about 30-40 infantry with a supporting vehicle or two per side.

After binge watching over a dozen western films it is no surprise that I got a hankering to play some old western tabletop games. The question is, where do I start and what does /tg/ recommend? I know of the existence of GW's Legends of the Old West but have no knowledge of it so I thought I would ask you fellas and see if I should start there or steer clear and look elsewhere.
>>
>>53467133
Legends of the old west and legends of the high seas are lotr with guns and with more pirates than normal.
>>
Anybody know if something like the Statuesque female head exist in 15mm?
>>
>>53467133
Dead Man's Hand and its expansions are worth looking at. It uses playing cards to determine initiative and for other abilities. A gang is pretty cheap and easy to build. There is an expansion that sets the game in Australia, and another that adds weird elements to it.

Tombstone just finished its Kickstarter. There are a lot of model options, and actually has mounted dudes for a change. It uses 32 mm models that are somewhat nicer than Dead Man's Hand's. It will take a while for everything to hit shelves though. Not weird outside of there being an undead faction.

If you want something really gonzo (That actually qualifies as /awg/ rather than /hwg/ for that matter) then look at Wild West Exodus. Somewhat larger and more expensive than the others. Has crazy shapeshifting natives, old timey brass robots, Union soldiers with power armor, and an entire faction of ayy lmaos who are there for reasons.

Malifaux counts I guess. Think a less crazy version of WWE, but it has so much other shit going on that it is at the end of this list for a reason. Great models, Parker Barrows and Perdita are worth collecting anyways.
>>
>>53467133

>>
>>53464169

Thanks, so about 1000 to 1500 points would be considered the normal size.

I quite like the look of the Freeborn as I always loved Dune and they're quite clearly Freemen inspired.

My only issue is that apart from the Freeborn and the Concord I don't really feel anything for the other factions. I wish we could get some more interesting factions apart from squid-men, rock-men, military-men and desert-men.
>>
>>53471945
There's no accounting for taste I suppose, but when I originally looked at Antares I only found the Ghar interesting, and nowadays I like almost all the factions (Boromites being the only ones who don't do anything for me). I think I just had to rewire my thinking away from 40k's space fantasy aesthetics to enjoy the more classical sci-fi factions of Antares.
>>
>>53472097

Maybe they'll grow on me. I think I need to see more vehicles before I make a final judgement.

Apart from the Ghar are they all humans?
>>
>>53471945
>>53472097
I was in the same boat as you guys.
In the beginning when they advertised the game as hard sci-fi and then released the Boromites I was incredibly disappointed.

After some time to get a fresh perspective I really enjoy the space opera thing that's going on with the miniatures though and bought inot the game.
Funny how that goes.
>>
>>53472177
even the ghar were supposedly human at some point.

There are really very few aliens. Some critters for Xilos and the guys from the Isorian faction are the only ones in the regular range.
The headhunter from the card game was a limited edition model, but also an alien.

All major factions are mutated humans that over a period of several thousand years adapted to the planets they colonized.
Except the Ghar, they were engineered to wage war.
>>
>>53472191
>>53472097
do you also happen to have a pdf? i am very interested in getting into antares, but i can't afford rules i am not sure i like.

>>53472273
Unfortunately not. I was actually planning on buying some of the new Freeborn within the next week and getting a pdf copy of the rulebook along with the order so that I can share it with people who are interested in Antares, so stay tuned.

I quite like the rules though, there are really only a couple of tiny issues that irk me, mainly that blast weapons randomise hits yet also use a template, and that unit coherency is only 1".
>>
>>53471336
yeah, we talk any lore for any tabletop as long as it falls in the /awg/ sphere, so no infinity, or WH, or the like.

I liked BA 1st ed on this one...HE D6, if it hit, it's D6 to wound rolls. Templates are really bloody unnecessary in BA 2nd ed, especially how they can't scatter or anything.
>>
>>53472450

Yeah, of all the new changes to 8th Ed 40k we're seeing, them removing pieplates and replacing them with 1st Ed BA's method of doing things is by no means the most unwelcome.

So any games with player resources? Like Fate points, but for the player instead of units.

Malifaux uses Soulstones which can be spent in many different ways. It uses a hand of playing cards as another resource as well.
>>

Who's minis are those?
>>
>>53478248
Autumn was pretty heavily upgraded, triple MAC and uprated engines and that. Halcyon Class would be neat for 'historical' battles against the Innies though.

Shieldbash uses "froth" which you have to spend to charge and do other special attacks. The interesting part is the other use: you can use froth to break any rule in the game, as long as your opponent agrees to the use and the froth cost.

An example:
You:"I want to jump this model over this impassible wall."
Opponent:"3 froth."
You:"2?"
Opponent:"Sure, why not?"

Yeah I'm pretty stoked to see what comes of it. The rules seems pretty slick, so it may be damn good.

I really like the setting, but hate the books because I just don't give a shit about most of the characters. So this is right up my alley.
>>
>>53486492
I have no idea why, but I love the idea of those trays. I know why they aren't the best, models that scale are expensive as hell to get enough to justify its use, but they are still sexy.

Scibor miniatures have some cool WH. Might as well have other options but I didn't look through all of it.

There's enough that's close out there for it to not really matter, but a Mad Max skirmish game specifically inspired by Fury Road would be fun.
For factions:
>Citadel War Boys: Fearless, good in close quarters, mostly use primitive ranged weapons.
>Bullet Farmer War Boys: best ranged weapons in the game, but not particularly skilled. Good morale but not fearless.
>Gas Town War Boys: Lots of weird tricks, with pole cats, chainsaw troops, and souped up vehicles.
>The Vuvalini: Excellent shots with good morale, but they only ride motorcycles and have fairly modest ranged weapons.
>Canyon Raiders: Another motorcycle gang, they've got very poor morale but access to decent shooting weapons and bombs. They're also skilled riders and can pull off stunt rolls more easily than the other factions.

It'd more or less be a Gorka-Morka hack, with gangs from each faction fighting over various objectives in the wastes. I'd probably put in expanded rules for groups like Lord Humungus's warriors, Auntie Entity's gang and maybe some desperate remnants of the Main Force Patrol.

I just want some new plastics goddamnit. Or re-releasing the old metals like the orcs, morannon orcs, gobbos, etc. A new kit of Rivendell spearmen and Númenor spear and bow would be nice, a Dol Amroth kit would be awesome, similar to the Uruk-hai box, 10 figs, half pike, half knight...but oh well, guess we'll never get those. And sadly moulding the Dol Amroth pikement in resin is a lost cause.

I've got an idea for a scifi skirmish but it needs a heckload of testing, either by play or maths. I'll try and write it up coherently for the next thread.
>>
So /awg/, me and my group are thinking of starting Wrath of Kings, each one of us should buy a starter and with the downloadable rules we'll work from there. Only thing I'm a bit concerned about is the variety of the sculpts, especially in the starters. What are we going to find in those starter sets and the various unit boxes in terms of number of sculpts?

Hello /awg/, anon recommended me this thread to ask my question, so here I am

I'm going to buy the Android Infiltration boardgame, but all character tokens are cardboard. No miniatures. If I were to look for miniature replacement for all characters and NPC, Where should I start? Who makes the best sci-fi miniatures? or should I just give up and 3D print them myself?

They can't be too big because they are played on top of cards and there can be several characters in the same room. Besides that, there is no a hard limit to how big they should be.
There are 6 playable characters, 5 NPCs, and 13 Lab Workers. The way the game is made, the NPC characters are cards placed next to the room they are revealed, while Lab Workers are tokens that share a tech lock on the flip side, so 13 lab workers at the same time is pretty improbable.

Malifaux is probably the closest, since you buy units with Soulstones but can also use the ones you don't spend to boost actions during the game.

I love the idea though, wish we saw variations of it more often.
>>
>>53481233
Someone already suggested KoW as a base. LotR's mass battle game (War of the Ring I think it was called) would actually work pretty well too, I think.

If you're willing to get away from 28mm, I'd probably go with something finer scale for GoT though... warmaster historical would probably be my preferred starting point.

I haven't heard anythong about wildly inconsistant quality, if that's what you're getting at.

Could also look at the two player starter if people wanna play those factions.
>>
>>53514926
The 2 players starter set gives way less than a single starter in terms of miniatures, with a bunch of markers and the quickstart rules. Alternatives for markers are easy enough to find, and the quickstart rules are downloadable on their site.
What I'm getting at, and sorry if I've been unclear before (English is not my first language, and I'm not very good at it), is: when we'll open our starters, will we find 12 infantry in just 1-2 poses? 2 leaders that are exactly the same (two Skorzas Alpha, 2 Dance Masters, 2 Gutter Friars, etc). When I'll take a second Galvanic Defender will it be exactly the same sculpt as the one in the starter? Or are there options (apart from converting them ourselves, of course) to further personalize the models?
>>
How does a super hero esque skirmish game sound? Gonna have it set up in a city with a couple factions.

>City police SWAT and officers
>Street Ganger mooks
>Evil megacorp troops
>Good guy super heroes AKA the elite faction
>Evil Villians with mook support can be mixed with gangers and megacorp dudes.

It's gonna have a almost diesel punk feel to it or at least a dash of judge dredd, early DC comics, and maybe some marvel influences.

Those are too prohibitedly expensive to run together, and the Mumak is actually just a mount for a haradrim chieftain so only he can ride it, with an upgrade to him becoming a Mahud beastmaster.
Some riders with chief alongside it would do for a nice flanking force, assuming they only have a warspear you can easily fit them along with a mumakil, but remember the Warriors on the howdah aren't free, you can probably balance those two out to be around the same in number.

I have a couple of their plastic boxes, namely their russian infantry, the templar infantry, the sergeant box and teutonic infantry as well.

Decent miniatures. Some of the heads have ugly sink marks on top of the helmet, but that can be fixed easily.
Some people (in here) seem to dislike the faces, but they are just generic and do the job. There are plenty of optional heads too, so you have a bit of variety if that should bother you too.
Pic related are some knights i built last year.

Overall i'm satisfied with the minis. The only downside is that in the russian box the spears come detached from the hands, so the hands are open and you are supposed to glue the spear into it. Personally i would have preferred arm/hand and spear in one piece like they did it in all the other boxes i have.
Oh, the tab (or base) the minis are molded onto could be a little bit thinner. But thats just a small problem.

Depends on what you're looking for. There are a shitload of real-world naval combat systems, and /hwg/ has the pdf's, or should. I like General Quarters, but it's a bit rule heavy.

DysWars is good, IMO, but the rulebook is this weird mix of sexy and hideous. The rules themselves work, but it's also a Spartan Games product, which means it may suddenly be abandoned for another project for a year.

As for other alternate universe naval wargames, I don't know.
>>
>>53544305
You could always hit up /hwg/ and find one of those needlessly complex naval games that strives for petty details and tbus bogs the game down in being more of an accurate simulation than an enjoyable game.

Otherwise yeah; DW is kinda the only one out there. Weird because you'd think more companies would want to do naval games.
>>
>>53544305
Fighting Sails is really fun. There are a bunch of figures made for it as well, but any appropriately scaled ships work for it.

I got a bunch right when the game died and the warehouse was just throwing the 5 fig boxes in to orders as packing when shipping to game stores. >>
>>53515126
I have the hadross starter, and the deepmen have about 6 poses, you get two each, and the jellies have 3 poses. The leaders also have two different poses, and there is a little give to them, but they are all pretty much push fit models.
>>
>That feel when you wanna buy and play Dystopian Wars but run into character dilemmas even thinking of it.
>Don't wanna support the ADD of a company
>Don't wanna buy into a game where I know it won't get any support

Kill me.
>>
>>53568827
That's true, but there's still /awg/ games that at least have a core audience. TOS is in a weird pickle where there's not a lot of outside interest shown so far, and the Wyrd Games crowd aren't interested in it.

The production models look okay, but not great, and the price point isn't low to match, so if you're not already a Wyrd fan, its a hard sell. And the Wyrd fans aren't that interested because its a watered down version of Malifaux in many of their eyes.

I think there's potential, but its going to be either an uphill battle, or someone's going to have to bite the bullet and go back on some of the things they were shooting for with TOS, which was to offer a noob-friendlier game to bring in new customers.
